Willard and Dibs continue to react to the Giants blowing a 9-3 lead in the 9th inning vs. the Reds, to keep them from their first sweep of the season. Is this the worst-ever season of Giants baseball?
Transcript
00:01This one's hit a long way, and gone, fair ball, way into the water.
00:13Suarez, it's a very high drive, very deep and very gone.
00:22And you think we got a game?
00:26We got a game.
00:30We're going to bunt this one, and Devers can't get it, and it flips down the right field line.
00:39Well, what could go wrong here in the ninth has gone wrong.
00:43Rodriguez, two home runs today, and he started off the ninth with a home run in the water.
00:48That's it.
00:50So McClain scores, and the Reds take the lead.
00:58Got him.
01:00And that's the ball game.
01:06So the Giants, with their chance finally to sweep a team,
01:14and had every opportunity to do so with a big lead in the ninth.
01:18And we talk about unbelievable wins.
01:22Wins, this was an unbelievable loss.
01:25Now, back to Willard and Dibbs on 95.7 The Game.
01:30All of those calls from NBC Sports Bay Area, and that was, this year, the most common form
01:38of Krook and Kite, which is called Pissed Off Krook and Kite.
01:42We got a little bit too much of that this year for my taste.
01:46But it is funny.
01:48It's not that funny, but it's funny.
01:51It's only funny because they are now 24 below 500, and you're about to sweep Cincinnati.
01:59And, you know, honestly, the way the whole series, the whole year has gone, it's been a little
02:03bit tense between the two.
02:05And all they did all series was throw the ball at your batters, and you didn't retaliate
02:10because you were going to retaliate by winning today.
02:13And then you gave up seven runs in the ninth inning, and you lost.
02:20Three more losses, and you guys win the bet.
02:23Yeah.
02:24Yeah.
02:24I mean, I almost feel, no, I don't say that.
02:28No, I know you're not.
02:29I almost don't want to.
02:30You don't feel bad.
02:30No, don't say that either.
02:31And you had already said, like, we're not going to resolve this until it's all said and
02:36done.
02:36Yeah.
02:37And we might have to do a secondary bet, like, once they lose their 81st, maybe we can
02:43talk about, will they lose 95?
02:45You want to do a double or nothing?
02:46Or not double or nothing, but maybe we'll put, like, dessert on it.
02:49I'm not interested in, but yeah, no.
02:51Dessert or an aperitif?
02:53I'm not buying you more.
02:54Period.
02:55Or an appetizer?
02:55Under any circumstances.
02:57I'm not buying you more.
02:58Shrimp cocktail?
02:59Calamari?
03:00I want to go to the phones, but real quick, can we have, like, some real, real quick game
03:04show music?
03:05Game show music, please.
03:08Dan Dibley, how many giants on the current 26-man active roster?
03:17We're on the opening day active roster.
03:20How many giants?
03:21What's my plus or minus in order to not be completely wrong?
03:26Do I have to nail it?
03:27Yeah, you're going to nail it.
03:28Okay.
03:29No, I'll give you one in both directions.
03:31I like that.
03:31And I'm not looking at anything other than today's box score.
03:35And I'm looking at it, and it's, I feel like I'm going to do my Kevin Dana.
03:40No, no, no, no, no.
03:41Because of the hitters, I'm only seeing one, maybe two.
03:46And I guess Chung Lee, who Lee is still active.
03:49I don't think that he got DL-ified.
03:51No, yeah, he's active.
03:52Thinking about it, I think my guy Gilby was on there too.
03:57So I'm going to say, I'm not going to go Scott Hanson, but I'm going to go one below and
04:01say six.
04:02Six giants.
04:04Remember how we were talking about whether or not you had to nail it?
04:09You nailed it.
04:10Mike Breen on the call?
04:12Bang.
04:13On the number, six giants on the active roster were on the opening day roster.
04:19Devers, Gilbert, Chung-Hoo Lee.
04:21No, Drew Gilbert was not on the opening day roster.
04:23Devers, Chung-Hoo Lee, and...
04:25Christian Koss.
04:26I'll make you.
04:27Christian Koss is actually the other, you forget, because they didn't play him for like
04:3137 days.
04:32Oh, that's right.
04:33But he was on the roster.
04:34So there are three position players and three pitchers.
04:38Christian Koss, Rafi Devers, Chung-Hoo Lee.
04:41Um, Logan Webb, Landon Roop, Ryan Walker.
04:46And Ryan Walker has had to get recalled twice.
04:49Right.
04:49And he's currently on the roster.
04:51There are more...
04:52That's it.
04:52There are more people on the 26th man that I've never heard of than were on the opening
04:57day roster.
04:58I'm going to just...
04:58Let me just throw out some names, then we're going to the phones.
05:01Spencer Bivens, Jason Foley, Trent Harris, Anthony Molina, Braxton Roxby.
05:08You're making stuff up now.
05:09Reaver San Martin, Carson Seymour, Blade Tidwell, Dylan Smith, Drew Cavanaugh, Andrew...
05:17There's a guy named Furman.
05:19Sure.
05:19We'll get there.
05:20Andrew Kisner, Oslevis Basabe, Nate Furman.
05:24There he is.
05:25Buddy Kennedy, Shea Whitcomb.
05:28Can't get him out.
05:29Turner Hill, Jonah Cox, Grant McRae.
05:32Those people are all giants right now.
05:35Like, those people have lockers, and they're in the dugout.
05:41They're in the starting lineup.
05:43Like, not only are they there...
05:44It's the Giants.
05:45Like, Whitcomb and Cox, and, uh, I mean, they started today.
05:52I don't know.
05:53It just...
05:53Yeah.
05:54This is where you are, and I know that we talk about Niner injuries all the time, and
05:58the Giants have 19 players right now on the IL.
06:01Now, if they didn't have 19 players on the IL, they probably would still be sub-500.
06:07Do we have, uh, um, and we'll go to the phones, but do we have Angry Tony?
06:11Do we have some Angry Tony?
06:12I'm working on it.
06:13Okay.
06:14Angry Tony Vitello after the game today.
06:16Who's Angry Tony Vitello during the game?
06:17Well, and I wonder why that he still has to speak when he got thrown out five batters
06:22in.
06:22Well, because he's the manager of the Giants.
06:23I get it, but, like, let's hear from Tingler.
06:26Let's not.
06:27I don't want to hear from Tingler.
06:29I want to hear from the dude who got thrown out.
06:31He watched the game on TV.
06:32So what?
06:33Let it rip, dude.
06:34Why'd you get thrown out?
06:36How you feeling, Skip?
06:38I was on my way in, and I actually heard that, and, uh, it was a check swing call that
06:42he
06:42didn't like.
06:43Oh, he was right.
06:44I mean, he's completely right.
06:45I didn't see it, but.
06:46But it doesn't, I mean, yeah, that's neither here nor there.
06:47And the beauty of, uh, nobody at the game is you got to hear the natural audio, and he,
06:52uh, he used some words that I can't, well, I mean, one of the words I've used before,
06:56but, uh, he used some words now.
06:58You weren't supposed to, though.
06:59Did you hear what he said that you can use on radio?
07:02Uh, no.
07:03No.
07:03He said, just get it right, and then right after that, he was ejected.
07:08Oh.
07:09Okay.
07:10So that's what he said on the field.
07:12Just get it right.
07:13And then.
07:14And then bad words.
07:15Bad words.
07:16Yeah.
07:16Like Crash Davis type bad words.
07:18Okay.
07:19Let's go to, uh, Richie in Queens.
07:21Hi, Richie.
07:21Thanks for calling.
07:22What's up?
07:24You know what?
07:26What?
07:27I am not usually at a loss of words.
07:31I think you guys know that.
07:32We do have a law firm on this team.
07:34We've got Furman, Cox, and Koss.
07:37I think I would definitely go to those guys if I needed some help in the legal profession.
07:43And I'm looking for all the positives.
07:46And I came up with five.
07:47You guys, good job coming up with the six.
07:51Forgot about Koss being on there.
07:53But, um, you know, what we're looking for now is positive.
07:58And I know the pitch is this.
07:59Thanks.
08:00It's beyond sync.
08:01You know, this is 84 and 85, guys.
08:03I go back 40 years.
08:04And we lost 100 in games.
08:06And then we got Will Clark.
08:07Things turned around.
08:08So I got to think positive.
08:10But to lose a game like this, you know, and Bevins comes up, looks okay in the eighth.
08:15You know, show some guts, Spencer.
08:19You got a chance maybe to make the roster for the rest of the year.
08:23And even Smith, who I thought could be our guy next year.
08:27And we see Gilbert doing well.
08:29And obviously, I think Turner Hill is going to be a good player.
08:34Devers is on a roll.
08:36But this is just typical of what this team is.
08:41Now, do you blame Vitello?
08:44Absolutely not.
08:45He's got what he's got.
08:47And what he has is horrendous.
08:50It's just horrendous.
08:51And it's so unfair to the fans.
08:53And obviously, I don't know the direction they're going.
08:57People say, like, I watch the Mets.
08:59And I know we've got Benj out there.
09:01And they've got Raley.
09:03And they've got Soto coming back.
09:04And Lindor.
09:05And they've got some good pitching.
09:06I look at this team and see nothing.
09:11We've got Webb.
09:12And we've got Roop, who's now a five.
09:15Who could have been, I thought, a three.
09:18We have no bullpen.
09:21It's, again, we have a law firm.
09:23We have Furman, Cox, and Koss.
09:28I mean, guys, is that a great name for a law firm?
09:30Well, I mean.
09:31I mean, this is just, it's mind-boggling.
09:34Yeah.
09:34It's just so horrible to watch, guys.
09:37And I don't want to make light of it.
09:39I know they're out there.
09:40They're professional players.
09:43But we're going to get Chapman back.
09:45And Devis back.
09:46And we'll get Schmidt back.
09:49And obviously, Adamus back.
09:51Eldridge.
09:52And, again, I look for positives.
09:54And there ain't many, guys.
09:55Always good talking to you.
09:56Yeah, Richie, thanks.
09:57Appreciate it.
09:59I've arrived at a point.
10:00It's funny when people do this.
10:02I hear it a lot.
10:03We've heard it a lot for months now.
10:04Who do you blame?
10:06Okay.
10:06I've sort of arrived at a spot where you, like, dealer's choice.
10:12When you're this bad, I'm sorry, nobody gets to skate.
10:17Do I, quote, blame Tony Vitello?
10:21No.
10:23But I also don't not blame Tony Vitello.
10:26If you want to do a percentage.
10:30I was thinking about a batting lineup.
10:32Yeah.
10:33Like, if you do it one through nine.
10:34Like, forget, like, your number three hitter being the biggest blame guy.
10:38If you just went one through nine on, like, your starting nine of blame.
10:42For me, your leadoff hitter is Buster Posey.
10:45And he is responsible with composing the roster.
10:49And this roster composition was flawed.
10:51There's no question.
10:52There's questions, though, about ownership and how they factor into the strategy of how this all went that in this
11:00moment I can't really answer.
11:02So, therefore, okay, sure, I'll buy that.
11:05Buster.
11:06But people with the last name Johnson, you're on the list.
11:09Tony Vitello, is it your fault?
11:11No.
11:12Did you do a good job this year?
11:13No.
11:14And, hey, players, is it your fault?
11:16No.
11:16Did you do a good job?
11:17No.
11:18No.
11:19Like, I mean, Luis Arise.
11:21Like, we could do.
11:22He's not in the starting lineup.
11:23No, he's not in the Giants.
11:25But he's not in the starting lineup of blame.
11:27I don't think he's anywhere near it.
11:29My point is, is there's about three or four people who I could point to, maybe, that actually might be
11:34kind, where I can say you don't get any.
11:37Right.
11:37You were great.
11:38You were awesome.
11:39I have very little issue with Bryce Eldridge.
11:42He's a rookie, and he's been a lot more good than bad.
11:45And I think his attitude's been awesome.
11:47Arise was awesome.
11:49There's a few other people, I don't know, throwing a Daniel Susak.
11:53Jung-Hoo Lee's been good.
11:55Devers has been back and forth.
11:57You're so bad that I can't, I can't make anyone just completely innocent.
12:06You can't be this bad and be like, this is completely someone else's fault.
12:13Everybody with the organization, like, I don't know, I'm not mad at the marketing department or the ticket takers, but
12:20the whole organization has failed across the board.
12:24And I don't care if you're a triple-A pitcher or not, you can protect a six-run lead in
12:29the ninth inning.
12:30You would hope.
12:30Yeah, so that's on you, too.
12:33Yeah, it's on so many different people.
12:35And today, I think, is just a microcosm of the season where, you know, you had a six-run lead
12:41going into the bottom of the ninth to get a sweep.
12:44And you don't sweep anybody, and yet you go out there and you give up seven runs.
12:48And so I don't want to sit here and do the full starting nine of who to blame.
12:52But I look at the top first, and you mentioned ownership, and I do think that's part of it.
12:57And, you know, Buster Posey, I don't know if he saw this as a gap year or a rebuild year
13:03and thought, you know what, we don't want to ahead of a possible lockout or a probable lockout.
13:07We don't want to go out there and, you know, spend huge money on a starter or big money on
13:12a closer.
13:13But what they came back with, Molly and Hauser and bullpen arms who don't get anybody out, that, to me,
13:20is a 162-game recipe for failure.
13:24Next up, let's go to Aubrey in Vallejo.
13:28Aubrey, thank you for calling.
13:29What's up?
13:57Aubrey, thanks.
13:58I mean, that's fair.
14:01And actually, I think that that's a much bigger issue that we're not talking about right now because it's not
14:07relevant in this moment, but it will become that.
14:10Logan Webb's still got two years on his deal.
14:12I don't think the Giants are interested in him going anywhere.
14:15But how does Logan feel about all this?
14:18Remember, he was the one that at the beginning of the year was like, I'm sick of going 500.
14:22Well, I bet he's having a great year then because they're not going to go 500 again.
14:27Yeah, he's got to be sick to his stomach.
14:29This is another year gone by and the Giants have gotten further away, not closer.
14:35And now they're getting younger as opposed to positioned to be more competitive.
14:40And, oh, by the way, I don't even know what the hell is happening next season or if there will
14:44be baseball or when.
14:47So, yeah, Logan Webb's clock is ticking big time.
14:50And think about just the Logan piece of it today.
14:52So, he moves up because I guess you want the sweep and you want to give Landon Roop an extra
14:57day to kind of get his stuff together.
14:59And so, you go to Logan and say, hey, would you mind moving up a day because you're really good
15:04and we'd love to win this one.
15:05And we also want to give Landon Roop an extra day.
15:08And so, Logan, yeah, all right.
15:10First inning is shaky, but he is able to escape it.
15:13And he eventually goes a typical Logan outing, six innings, five hits.
15:17He only walked one.
15:18He gave up two earned.
15:19And he kept you not only in the game, but he left with the lead.
15:23And so, thank you, Logan.
15:25All we need is nine outs from the rest of you guys.
15:28Can you get nine outs for us, bullpen?
15:31And the answer was a resounding no.
15:33The San Francisco Giants moved Logan Webb up today to go for their first sweep of the year against the
15:40Cincinnati Reds.
15:41They were up 9-3 at the start of the ninth inning.
15:44And for the first time in 2,209 games, they were unable to close out a run, a six-run
15:53lead or better going into the ninth inning.
15:55They lose the game 10-9.
15:56Tony Vitello was ejected from the game, five hitters in.
15:59Here's Tony with regard to the ninth inning.
16:03This, remember, he watched from the clubhouse.
16:05But this is Tony on the ninth inning.
16:07Don't really have a word for it.
16:08It's more than unfortunate, but, you know, what led up to that was a pretty good effort out of some
16:14guys.
16:15You know, with the bat in particular, playing hard, but we kind of finished how we started the game there
16:21on the first pitch of the game,
16:22adding more stress to our life than we needed.
16:24Okay, more from Tony on the mood of the clubhouse right now.
16:28Dictated by, you know, the guys that are in there.
16:30Rafi's done a really good job of leadership, but there's a lot more guys in there than just him.
16:35So, you know, the pitchers, being a bullpen pitcher in the big leagues is like being a part of fraternity
16:40like no other.
16:42You always want to carry the load, do your job, pitch even when you're tired, do all kinds of different
16:46things.
16:47You're kind of, you know, built almost kind of military style to never let anybody down.
16:51So it doesn't matter win or loss.
16:53Those guys are always kind of a different breed.
16:55So it's kind of up to the players what the mood is and what the response is.
16:58You ready for angry, Tony?
16:59I can't wait.
17:00Okay.
17:01This is on the ejection.
17:03And that's where it starts.
17:05But listen to where it goes.
17:07Yeah, I mean, thought he swung.
17:08So I said I thought he swung.
17:09Like I said, the inning was more, the guy didn't throw very well in Fenway.
17:14And, you know, the attitude we play with is a reflection of us.
17:17And you need to be hooked up no matter who's pitching.
17:20But like I said, we added more stress to that inning than we needed to.
17:23So maybe that was a factor.
17:24But I thought the guy swung.
17:25It's part of my role to say if that's what I thought.
17:28And then you can get into escalation versus de-escalation.
17:31But, yeah, it's up to you guys.
17:33I don't know what the rules are there.
17:35I didn't throw two baseballs at anybody.
17:36I can tell you that.
17:37Okay.
17:37So at the end, then he also brings the Reds into play,
17:41which I think speaks to why he kind of took this out on the umpire.
17:45He wasn't wrong to be mad at the umpire.
17:47But I think that he's also ticked off that these Cincinnati Reds have been
17:51throwing at the Giants all week.
17:53And, look, it begs the question, because I am not –
17:57I think this stuff is just stupid.
17:59I have all along.
18:00Like this whole idea of we're just going to start throwing balls at you,
18:03because I don't like you, or you hit the ball too hard last time,
18:07so now we have to throw at you.
18:09It's dumb.
18:10At the same time, you can't just sit there
18:12and let another team do this for three days,
18:16especially on getaway day.
18:18They're going to come after you hard,
18:20because you've got no chance to get back at them.
18:23And then you just sit there?
18:24You sit there and take it?
18:26And then be mad about it after the game?
18:28You've been thrown out three hours ago,
18:31and you're still mad about it.
18:33Like, I don't know.
18:35And that's the important –
18:37I mean, you have to do something about it.
18:38Right.
18:39And that's –
18:40I mean, you and I always go back and forth about, like,
18:42what you should do,
18:44and I'm always prone to say, like,
18:46you need to go out there and dot somebody.
18:47And I know that Webb hit Bladet early in the game,
18:51and it was in a spot where it was no way intentional,
18:54and yet they come back and they hit not only one guy,
18:57but they hit two guys.
18:58One of them was early in the game on an 0-2 pitch.
19:01I think that was in the first inning.
19:03Okay, fine.
19:03It's an 0-2 count in the first inning,
19:06and you hit our guy with a curveball.
19:08That's not intentional.
19:08But at the same time,
19:10you get to a spot where you've been getting dotted all series long.
19:14You have to go out there and send a message.
19:16And even, you know, Tony Vitello talking about it,
19:19and he didn't say that in no uncertain terms,
19:21but he mentioned the fact that, you know,
19:23they had two guys who had gotten hit,
19:25and so what are you going to do about it as an organization?
19:28At some point, you've got to stand up.
19:30And I even shared with the group on my way in, like,
19:33oh, there's going to be a fight today.
19:35The benches will clear today,
19:36and the Giants never got, you know,
19:39to that point where they fired back.
19:41I'm like, what in the hell happened this year?
19:45This is like, I just, I can't even forget playoffs
19:50and, you know, that conversation about, you know,
19:54chasing the Dodgers or the Padres or whatever.
19:57I'm like, this, this season,
20:00just it turned into a complete migraine headache.
20:06Like, they're now, they've fallen to eighth in attendance.
20:10But I'm like, you sure about that?
20:13I mean, when you're watching the game
20:16and the ball goes to the outfield
20:18and the camera accidentally pans the stadium,
20:20and I know this was a day game on a Wednesday,
20:22but it's like, whoa, whoa.
20:26The internet still says they average 36,000 fans a night.
20:29Um, this looked like not an A's game,
20:34but, like, related to it.
20:36There might have been 20 at the peak,
20:39probably closer to 15.
20:40Sure didn't look like it.
20:41It didn't, especially as the game, you know, wore on.
20:45And if you are a Giants fan and you went
20:47and you see that they're up 9-3
20:48and it's about, I don't know, 3.30 in the afternoon,
20:52you're thinking, all right,
20:53I got to get on that Bay Bridge and beat traffic.
20:55They're up 9-3.
20:56We can go ahead and leave now.
20:58It's safe to go home,
20:59but turns out it was not safe to go home.
21:02But to your point, yeah,
21:03there was not 30-whatever-thousand people in there,
21:07so attendance is always a little bit dubious,
21:09but at the same time, tickets sold,
21:12and that's where, you know,
21:13chalk one up for the Johnsons
21:15because they're going to end up drawing
21:17about 2.7 million this year, comfortably.
21:23Well, I mean, with the state of the entire thing,
21:27knowing that, by the way, it's August 26th,
21:31and so we got September, we got October,
21:33we got November.
21:34We're about three months away from the lockout,
21:36and the lockout is happening.
21:38That's already a done deal.
21:42Conversation has been changed
21:43because of what the Dodgers' ownership
21:45has been caught doing.
21:46I don't know how hard owners can even push
21:50for a salary cap anymore,
21:51but this is going to be a 10-round bout,
21:54and this is going to go January, February, and March.
21:58It's going to do all of that,
21:59and so this is what a Giants fan is now treated to
22:05for an entire summer,
22:06and then that's what's ahead.
22:08That's what the next seven months are going to be about.
22:11And quietly, it might be a little bit of a relief.
22:14Maybe.
22:15It might be a nice break.
22:17Interesting way to say it.
22:18When you asked, like, you didn't ask,
22:19but you, like, threw out almost, you know,
22:22as a random thing, like,
22:24what went wrong this year?
22:26And we could talk about it
22:27because I think there are about six or seven things
22:30specifically that went wrong,
22:32and they don't always go that way,
22:35but what went wrong stayed wrong.
22:37Yeah.
