00:00We're going to open these phones, 800-636-1067, 800-636-1067.
00:04If you say I'm cherry-picking or straw-manning here, fair.
00:08I'm just going to point out two known statistics.
00:11Right.
00:12When the Lions went 0-16, they were 4-0 in the preseason.
00:17Mm-hmm.
00:17And the Super Bowl ring you wear, the 1991 Washington Redskins, 14-2,
00:22one of the greatest teams ever, 0-4 in the preseason.
00:25So, just putting those facts out there.
00:28That's the one thing where people have to stop trying to act like exactly what goes on in preseason is
00:35what happens.
00:35Because as a Commander slash Redskins fan, one of the best scoring preseasons we had was when Spurrier rolled up
00:46in here,
00:46Osaka and all that stuff.
00:48What happened once the season started?
00:51Ass-kicking.
00:52So, it matters to the coaches trying to select the team.
01:01It matters to people that are trying to get seen by the coaches, too.
01:05But the record does not matter.
01:07Let's let the folks chime in.
01:09Aaron is in Suitland.
01:10What's up, Aaron?
01:12Hey, guys.
01:13Thank you, sir.
01:13How concerned are you by the preseason?
01:15Man, I'm extremely concerned.
01:17Thank you so much for taking my phone call.
01:19I 100% disagree with everything that you guys are saying.
01:24Let's not go back so far back with this team.
01:27Let's look at last year preseason.
01:29We averaged on defense giving up maybe around 30, 31 points a game.
01:34Well, guess what?
01:35It rolled over into, you know, the regular season.
01:38You know, one of the things that, you know, and like one of the things as a fan for myself,
01:43you know, I've been a fan since 1971, one of the things that I like is when I see a
01:48person
01:48playing, I like to hear their name call.
01:51It reminds me so much, so much of this guy number 30 for the Washington Redskins in 1990.
01:58The very first time he fielded a punt, he returned it for a touchdown.
02:03It was a punt or a kickoff.
02:04I don't think he was going to make the team.
02:06I don't think he was ahead of Ernest Biner or Riggs or Kelvin Bryan and so on and so forth.
02:13So when you see a person do a job and they call their name a lot,
02:17then that's indicative of the talent that that person has,
02:21regardless if they're first team, second team, third team, or what have you.
02:25You know, you have to be able to see talent.
02:28You have to be able to recognize it.
02:30And you have to be able to acknowledge it.
02:32It's not plain and simple.
02:33And that's what I look at as a fan.
02:35So did the way the starting defense looked encourage you then?
02:41No, because, as you know, the NFL is a repetitive, what is it, a copycat.
02:49So guess what?
02:50We have problems stopping the run up the middle.
02:52So guess what?
02:53The next preseason game, that's what the next NFL team is going to do.
02:57They're going to test that.
02:58And then if it carries over, guess what?
03:00They're going to do it even in the regular season.
03:03They're going to test that.
03:03When the starting defense was out there, the first play, they scored a touchdown on a fumble.
03:09And on the next series, they had an interception.
03:11That doesn't register?
03:13That doesn't count?
03:14Well, I mean, no, truly, that does count.
03:17That does count.
03:18That shows that they have some speed.
03:19Like, for example, just me as a fan, I see that it's going to be difficult to run on the
03:24outside of us.
03:25But I think that we're liable up the middle.
03:28So that's what it looks like to me on TV with the limited knowledge and information that I have.
03:35It looks like running side to side is going to be difficult, right?
03:38That's what it looks like to me.
03:39But up the middle, I think we're vulnerable.
03:42Okay.
03:42Well, listen, I appreciate the call, man.
03:44And I think, you know, everybody's trying to kind of figure out how this thing will look.
03:49What he's saying, though, okay, he's ready to jump off the bandwagon but not ready to jump on when somebody
03:57does.
03:57It's good.
03:58See, good stuff is not good enough.
04:00Now, he mentioned about me returning a kick.
04:02Me returning a kick is seen way more than somebody making tackles and doing things like that.
04:09It's those kick returns and touchdowns by a receiver and a running back going a long ways.
04:14Those things are like flash plays.
04:17If you're a linebacker and you're making your proper reads and turning their people back into another tackle, you're doing
04:24your job.
04:25So, what do you do?
04:26You're supposed to just leave that and go make some one-on-one tackles, which in essence, you're going to
04:31eventually give up a big play.
04:33So, I'm just saying it's different.
04:35You look at different positions in different ways.
04:38It's not all the same.
04:39Me returning a kick, everybody see that.
04:43And after that play, I still had to make the damn team from that point.
04:50You know what I'm saying?
04:51I was told I haven't done a damn thing, even after returning a kick.
04:55There have been people who come here who return kicks in the preseason.
04:59They didn't make the football team.
05:01Detroit's first.
05:02Listen, if you're upset with this football team right now, I can get it.
05:06If you're upset with the resources deployed to the offensive line, because I think that's where most fans are, I
05:12can rack my brain around that.
05:14I'm not sure I fully agree with where some fans are, but I can understand your concern.
05:20Fully.
05:21You don't think they put resources toward the offensive line?
05:24That's the thing, is because Tunsil's hurt, now all the resources allocated to him don't count.
05:29They don't count, but then you don't have enough to just go get another Tunsil?
05:33Right.
05:34They trade for Tunsil, make him the highest paid tackle in football, draft a first-round tackle in Connerly.
05:39Coleman was a high third-round pick.
05:43Cosme got an extension.
05:44If you have beef with cutting Biotis, going with Allegretti, I get it.
05:51My only caveat to that would be we're still in August, and if Allegretti starts today in a walkthrough, practices
05:58tomorrow, practices Wednesday against the Ravens, is good to go for week one, a lot of this will be rendered
06:06irrelevant.
06:07But it doesn't change how you feel about it right now.
06:10What I will disagree with, though, if it's all about, like, let the guys play, just we want to see
06:17some performances, the Detroit offense, they were without Jared Goff, they were without Jameer Gibbs.
06:24I don't know if folks are calling Detroit radio station.
06:27I believe it's 97-1 the ticket.
06:29Did you see how much signage 97-1 the ticket had in Ford Field?
06:32They're spending money.
06:33Dog, it was everywhere.
06:35I believe it's 97-1 the ticket.
06:37Hopefully that's the Odyssey station.
06:38Otherwise, we're promoting somebody else.
06:40But, like, I don't know if fans are calling the ticket to say why the hell weren't the starters playing.
06:47That Detroit team has accomplished much more than this Washington team.
06:51Like, Jared Goff has now, you know, played in the Super Bowl, played in an NFC title game.
06:56Like, maybe Goff doesn't need preseason work.
06:58Jameer Gibbs, there was a contract situation.
07:01He didn't practice fully.
07:03Maybe he doesn't need the preseason work.
07:05But the defense that was on the field for Washington, all they could do is try to make plays.
07:11And they did.
07:12The first two drives for Detroit, two plays, a fumble six.
07:18The next drive, six plays, Quan Martin gets another pick.
07:21Quan Martin is now at interceptions in two straight preseason games and his last two games in Detroit.
07:26I'm now, much like Deami is Mr. January, his only opportunity to play in January, balled out.
07:33Quan Martin is Mr. Detroit.
07:35Like, dude just goes up there and makes plays.
07:37Yeah.
07:37I called him that and he just laughed.
07:40If you, I can't understand, if your concern is the Josh Dobbs touchdown, I'll be honest, I'm not going to
07:49go back and chart to see who was on the field for that one versus the first two series when
07:54they were dominant.
07:56I can understand that.
07:57But you can't just negate the first two series of dominance from this defense.
08:01But Jay is being negated.
08:03You know why?
08:04Because it was too positive.
08:06Let's go to Deacon in D.C.
08:08Deacon, what up?
08:10Man, let me tell y'all something.
08:13First of all, the covers come off in two weeks.
08:16First of all, how y'all doing?
08:17Good morning, brother.
08:18We're good, buddy.
08:19You're good.
08:20Listen, the covers come off.
08:21The covers come off in two weeks.
08:23What we, Coach already told you what he was going to do.
08:26I'm just going to do the first series with the big guys, with the starters.
08:30And then, good or bad, they're out of there.
08:33Because that's not, this preseason, I'm trying to find out who's the next man,
08:38the best man or the next man.
08:40So I need to let my puppies play.
08:42So the puppies are going to play these next two weeks.
08:46Really.
08:46They're really going to play the next two weeks.
08:48They ain't going to put them starters in there.
08:50They already kind of know, man, I got to agree with you on that.
08:54The game day is what we're setting it up for.
08:57But we got to take this thing to the level where we can get the game day
09:01to say what's going on.
09:03So you got to have, you already knew, you already kind of know who the starters are.
09:07But now we got to find out what we got in the mix.
09:11And that thing with Stiles, Stiles is doing exactly what he's being told to do.
09:16He ain't out of place.
09:17He's doing what he, he's going to start.
09:19He's going to be that guy.
09:21And it's not going to be a flash play.
09:23Like you say, Brian, that touchdown that you ran preseason, I was a flash play.
09:29Now, I mean, you had to play the whole game to try to play up to that flash play.
09:35You know what I'm saying?
09:35So, no.
09:37No.
09:37Just stay here.
09:38We got a good, solid team.
09:41I think the man, the man has done a great job putting people together.
09:46Alan Gretty, if he's not ready, next man up.
09:49And we're training, we're training.
09:51You're saying it might be Cosby.
09:53It might be that third-round draft pick.
09:54But the bottom line is, if Alan Gretty's not ready, he's going to try.
10:00We're going to try this with him.
10:01Moving forward, maybe with this week or whatever, whatever.
10:04And Boston will be a good way to, I mean, Baltimore will be a good way to see it be,
10:09you know, game ready.
10:11You know what I mean?
10:12So, you know, that's what I got, man.
10:13Everybody just calm down.
10:15They say it on the radio.
10:17The media don't play the game.
10:21They don't play the game.
10:24Like, the one thing I'll say, I don't know, Deacon said a lot there, and I appreciate the call.
10:30Two things can be true.
10:32Stiles was out of position on the Josh Dobbs 50-yard touchdown run.
10:37Period.
10:38So were five other people.
10:39And it was the third drive of the Lions.
10:43Like, I'm going to actually try to chart this here in the break.
10:46Like, I'm going to try to chart this here in the league.
10:47Like, I'm going to try to chart this here in the league.
10:47Like, I'm going to try to chart this here in the league.
