00:37Spud's Adventure Game Boy
00:47Super specific question for you. Have you ever dreamed of going on a whimsical and harrowing
00:52journey as a humble potato in order to rescue a tomato princess? Of course, who hasn't, right?
00:58Right? Right? Okay. Well, Spud's Adventure for the Game Boy plants you into the role of Spud,
01:04who along with his pals Arnie Eggplant, Terry Turnip, and Garrett Carrot,
01:08must save the day by rescuing the princess, Princess Motto. This little handheld adventure
01:13title is a real gem, and a rare one at that, with tons of action, puzzles, and detailed exploration.
01:19Oh, and you even get some light RPG goodness thrown in for some extra fun. Yes, it's obviously a weird
01:25game, but manages to have enough enjoyment to see you through to the end. Plus, the music is just spot
01:30on.
01:38Conquest of the Longbow, The Legend of Robin Hood for PC
01:46The 90s were chock full of unique and often experimental PC games. Some good, some bad,
01:52and some being highly overlooked. Well, such is the case with Conquest of the Longbow, The Legend of
01:58Robin Hood. This oft-forgotten, slow-paced, methodical point-and-click adventure game,
02:02blended genre staples with some strategy elements to keep things interesting.
02:07You, of course, play as Robin Hood and his merry men as they gather funds to pay off a ransom.
02:12This leads to many in-depth character encounters, unique mini-games, wild puzzles, even multiple
02:17endings. It's a tough game to be sure, often a hallmark of adventure games of the 90s, but it has
02:24such an absorbing world with loads of personality and even an inventive day-to-day structure to keep
02:29things well-paced. Scud, The Disposable Assassin, Sega Saturn
02:50The Sega Saturn sure had some off-the-wall games. Enter Scud, The Disposable Assassin, a side-scrolling
02:57run-and-gun shooter with first-person sections. If you combine the likes of Vectorman with Earthworm
03:03Jim and a smattering of light gun scenarios, you'd end up with Scud. While not a long game by any
03:08stretch, its short runtime as either Scud or other character drywall ensures this overlooked Saturn
03:14gem always keeps the gameplay fresh, with new perspectives, new settings, and new challenges.
03:20Plus, it can be played with hybrid controls, combining traditional controller play with light gun
03:25elements. It's just a fun and wacky action title where the shooting and movement both feel and look
03:31great. It's honestly just one of those games that would look right at home in the creative indie scene
03:42nowadays. Kula World PS1
03:55Also known as Roll Away or Kula Quest in other regions, Kula World is a fun and creative take on
04:01the puzzle platforming genre. This perspective-shifting spherical adventure has one simple goal, make it
04:07to the exit. However, doing so is far from easy. You will need to collect keys to open up new
04:12pathways,
04:13collect coins and fruits, and even use some wacky power-ups along the way. It's a pretty ingenious
04:18experience since your ball can maneuver around every side of a block, often making this a mind-bending
04:24journey to the exit. All, of course, while trying to get a high score.

04:54The Sega Game Gear was, and still is, an underappreciated handheld system.
04:59Despite draining batteries like nobody's business, it thrived with unique gaming experiences,
05:05with both graphical fidelity and fun moment-to-moment gameplay. Such is the case with Arena Maze of
05:10Death, an isometric labyrinthian shooter. This game is awesome. You are dropped into a plethora of
05:16industrial maze-like stages, where survival isn't just about your top-notch firepower,
05:21but how you can stay nimble and avoid the many goons that wait to thwart you,
05:26all while hopefully not getting lost. It's a solid-looking and playing game that still holds up well today.
05:39The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang Super Nintendo
05:49This is one of those lovingly crafted action adventure RPGs that sort of transcends the time
05:55period it was released. While on the surface it might just look like another Zelda clone,
06:00it's actually got so much to set it apart. First off, you play as a vampire prince,
06:05who just so happens to look like a stage magician. Good thing he does, since it means Spike has oodles
06:10of magical powers up his sleeve, such as magic card attacks, and even powerful hat-throwing like he
06:16was the apprentice to Oddjob. Your journey to stop the nefarious Von Hessler isn't easy,
06:21but it is rewarding. Adventuring through various biomes, lands, and dungeon-like areas, Spike must
06:27recruit allies, level up, and defeat Von Hessler's cronies along the way. Don't miss this Super
06:32Nintendo gem if it happened to pass you by the first time around. It's great.
06:44Zombie Revenge Dreamcast
06:55If you stripped House of the Dead of its first-person light gun elements,
06:59and instead thrust it into an arcadey third-person shooter, with all of the horror and over-the-top
07:04camp that comes with it, you'd have Zombie Revenge. The Dreamcast is loaded with arcade-like
07:09experiences that are fun to play, and sadly this zombie-slaying gem gets overlooked more often than
07:15not. It's pure action through and through, as you move through ever increasingly creepy and more
07:20wacky locations, shooting monsters and other zombies in the face, trying to just stay alive,
07:26of course, and trying out all manner of awesome weapons. It's campy, it's often laugh-out-loud zany,
07:32and it's full of spooky good times. I mean, seriously, what's up with these high-pitched
07:36weirdos that you have to face throughout your harrowing journey?
07:39They seem like they snorted one too many pixie sticks. Nah, I don't know.
07:53Goofy's Hysterical History Tour, Sega Genesis.
08:03The 90s were loaded with great Disney games, but one that many retro fans forget about is Goofy's
08:09Hysterical History Tour for Sega Genesis. I honestly have so many fond memories of playing
08:14this as a kid back in the day, even if, if I'm honest, I probably never actually got that far
08:19in
08:19the game. It's quite a challenging platformer. You see, as Goofy, you explore various creative
08:24locations based on exhibits in a museum. This means that each stage feels and plays differently. Goofy
08:30may be a bit wonky and lanky to control, of course given his lankiness, but he has oodles of tools
08:36in his
08:36arsenal, including a cartoony grapple arm, a stone age unicycle, and more, in order to navigate these
08:42perilous stages. It's a solid time all around, and is bursting with whimsical Disney energy.
08:56Alien Incident PC-MS-DOS
08:59The displacement field still open?
09:01Negative, sir. The phenomenon collapsed right after we came through.
09:06So, does the thought of a point-and-click adventure game set on Halloween night where
09:10aliens get dragged into our world through your uncle's wormhole spawner sound awesome to you?
09:15Of course it does, hence why 1996's Alien Incident is such a great adventure game.
09:20It's a shame this one gets overlooked so often when discussing this beloved genre.
09:25It's got great writing, plenty of wit and dry humor, good puzzles, fun exploration, and a wacky sci-fi
09:30story. Plus, its short run time ensures its fun and silliness never outstays its welcome.
09:43Psychic World Sega Game Gear
09:53Despite having grown up with the Game Gear and having played a bevy of games for the handheld,
09:58you'd think I'd at least have heard of Psychic World, right? Nope. Not until researching this
10:03very list did this game even come across my radar, which is wild. And I likely think that's probably
10:08true for most gamers from the 90s or retro fans today. Psychic World is an action platformer with
10:14light run-and-gun elements, akin to something like Gunstar Heroes, but in a more light way.
10:19The truly cool and unique mechanic in this game is your character's ability to pause time and swap
10:25between various psychic abilities, known here as ESP skills. Each one is powerful in its own right,
10:31and can be used in certain situations, whether during exploration or even combat encounters.
10:36It's a super duper short game to be sure, like many handheld titles, but keeps you hooked with its
10:42fun traversal, contained levels, unique skills, and cool boss battles.
10:53Rippin' Riders Snowboarding Dreamcast
11:04Cool Boarders and 1080 might have been the kings of snowboarding games during the 90s, well of course
11:09snowboard kids, until the likes of SSX and Amped came around in the 2000s. Yet there was another one
11:15for the Dreamcast carving its own quiet path, Rippin' Riders Snowboarding. Known as Cool Boarders Burn
11:22in Japan and Snow Surfers in Europe, this snowboarding game from the creators of Cool Boarders might be
11:27less polished and harder to control than the aforementioned titles, but it's still an often
11:32overlooked extreme sports title that thrives on downhill speed, insane obstacle course-like tracks,
11:38and some big air. Whether you carve down the mountain slopes or pull off some tricks in the pipes,
11:43this Dreamcast boarding game is worth checking out.
11:56Brain Lord Super Nintendo
12:06With a name like Brain Lord, I half expected this to be a heavy metal or deathcore band, not a
12:11vibrant
12:12fantasy Zelda-like adventure RPG about a dude named Ramir. This overlooked Super Nintendo Jam has it
12:18all for fans of classic top-down adventure titles. Things like dungeons, exploration, puzzles, item
12:24management, combat, chatting with NPCs, really the whole kit and caboodle. Ramir is able to journey along
12:30with various fairies who act as aides and companions. This, along with various quests and new trinkets to find, keeps
12:37brain lord feeling rewarding all throughout. It's just one of those fantasy-inspired adventures that time
12:42seems to have forgotten about.
12:53The Neverhood PC
13:04This is one heck of a classy adventure game. From the incredible claymation work, to the toe-tapping
13:10music, to the wacky characters, and yes, even the cryptic puzzles, The Neverhood never fails to be
13:15enjoyable. Much like Alien Incident that we mentioned earlier, The Neverhood never seems to get talked about
13:21or brought up much in the discourse around awesome 90s point and click games. Fans of the genre of
13:27course know how excellent this title is, but everyone else seems to have just forgotten about it.
13:31The game seamlessly blends claymation animations with both third and first person perspectives,
13:37as you explore the strange alien world, finding items, solving some puzzles, and progressing the story.
13:43Plus, the jazzy music in this game is just lovely, especially with the awesome and kind of funny
13:48gibberish vocals. Good stuff.
13:58In fact, I liked the music so much in this game that I decided to create a short rendition all
14:04of
14:04my own. Enjoy!
14:14Rascal, PS1
14:23So, with the likes of Super Mario 64, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot, it's really no surprise that a
14:303D
14:30platforming game like Rascal kind of got swept under the rug. That's a real shame though, since although
14:35it does suffer from some wonky tank camera issues and 3D control issues, as well as one too many
14:41underwater sections, it manages to separate itself from its contemporaries with its fun time traveling
14:47concept, its cosmic dark bubble gun weapon combat, classic 90s attitude, and even character designs
14:54created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. How cool. It's a short, breezy platforming adventure with a
15:00unique style that still holds up today, despite some of the actual moment-to-moment gameplay inconveniences.
15:13Enemy Zero Sega Saturn
15:23Sega Saturn might not be home to many truly amazing horror experiences, but it does at least have Enemy Zero,
15:30itself a cinematic sci-fi horror gem with a unique twist. The actual enemies are invisible. Yeah,
15:36you heard that right. While that might sound frustrating from an actual gameplay perspective,
15:40it works incredibly well here. You see, after Laura wakes up from cryosleep aboard a dark and
15:46foreboding spaceship, she is met with invisible extraterrestrial nightmares. You'll figure it out
15:51when you play the game. Laura must utilize the VPS, Vulnerability Positioning System, a unique audio
15:57tool with ping capabilities, in order to eke out the aliens' locations. She can then use her wits,
16:03the audio cues and pings, and energy gun to fight back. Now, being a survival horror game,
16:08it won't be easy, not at all, and supplies will of course be limited, and death will come swiftly.
16:13But exploring this creepy sci-fi environment with the omnipresent threat of invisible enemies
16:18is still unique and creative even to this day.
16:42The Adventures of Star Saver Game Boy
16:44We are back at it with another short, sweet, fun, and action-packed Game Boy title that we
16:57rarely hear get discussed. The name of the game here is Run and Gun Side-Scrolling Mech Combat,
17:02where you pilot a goofy and honestly derpy-looking metal behemoth in order to take on intergalactic
17:08threats. Each of the game's levels and bosses feels quite different from one another, and you are
17:13constantly encouraged to keep moving, find power-ups, and explore every nook and cranny.
17:18For such a short 2D action-adventure game, it's chock full of creativity, and it never lets up on
17:23the full-throttle sci-fi mech fun. Plus, the music here in this game is just top-notch.
17:36Artie Lightfoot Super Nintendo
17:46If you can manage to get your hands on and afford this colorful and vibrant mascot platformer for
17:52Super Nintendo, then please do. While it seemed like every developer hoped for their specific mascot to
17:57thrive in the 90s, it just sadly wasn't the case. However, Artie does indeed deserve another shot in
18:03the platforming spotlight. Artie isn't alone in this journey to thwart the Wicked King. He's joined by
18:09his chubby penguin-slash-frog-looking pal, Donnie. Donnie is useful for almost every situation that
18:15Artie finds himself in, from pummeling enemies, to collecting items and chests, to navigating the
18:20game's creative and enjoyable levels. Yes, it may look like many other 2D platformers of the time,
18:25yet Artie Lightfoot does just enough to make it feel and play differently from others of its ilk.
18:31It's honestly just a fun little romp through a colorful, whimsical world full of possibilities.
18:44Beetle Adventure Racing Nintendo 64
18:55Seriously, who the heck would have believed that a licensed racing game about VW Beetles would be so
19:00darn good. It's a wild concept that shouldn't have worked, but it did. It's a rock solid racing game
19:07with awesome tracks, tons and tons of shortcuts and hidden paths, oodles of collectible boxes to
19:12smash through, and honestly just a great sense of speed and momentum. I have so many fond memories of
19:18playing this game and rushed to Extreme Racing USA as a kid back in the day with my best friend
19:23during
19:24sleepovers. It's pure arcadey goodness that often feels and plays more like a cart racing game,
19:29minus the item pickups and powerups. It's cartoony, controls well, has loads of content,
19:35and never gets old. And yes, in case you didn't hear me the first time to remind you, this is
19:39a
19:39licensed Volkswagen Beetle game. Wild indeed.
19:52Tale Concerto PS1
20:03Dog people versus cat people. The age old question, and the one that seems to be the very beating heart
20:09of
20:09Tale Concerto, or at least from what I've gathered. As Waffle Rye Bread, which might just be the best
20:15name in all of video games ever, seriously, Waffle Rye Bread. I love it. You must sadly stop your well
20:21earned vacation time to try and stop the nefarious hijinks and shenanigans of the Black Cats game.
20:27Waffle hops in his robo mech suit in order to explore the lush Kingdom of Prairie,
20:31itself a floating island archipelago full of anthropomorphic dogs and cats.
20:36Honestly, this game is just downright fantastic all around, although it's kind of hard to classify.
20:42It's kind of a brawler slash beat em up game, it's kind of a platformer, and it's kind of a
20:47typical
20:47puzzle action adventure game. Catching the Black Cat Gang Kittens is the name of the game here
20:52regardless. Tale Concerto is just brimming with lush cartoony anime cutscenes, heartwarming dialogue,
20:58and loads of creative gameplay scenarios. Go play it if you happen to miss out on it back in 1998.
21:12Wizz and Liz Sega Genesis
21:23Apart from Sonic 2, this is hands down the game I played the most on my Sega Genesis back in
21:30the early
21:30to mid-90s with my older sister. It's just so much freaking fun. However, I must say I have a
21:36very
21:36serious question for you before we proceed any further. Have you ever wanted to spell out words
21:41like muggins, purful, spuffler, plumbuggo, and rixitrix by capturing rabbits known as wabbits,
21:48all while collecting oodles upon oodles, and even more oodles, and I know I've used that word a lot in
21:53this list,
21:53oodles of fruit ingredients for various spells for your bubbling cauldron back at your wizard hut?
21:59Okay, oh gosh, silly me, who hasn't wanted that? Dreams do indeed come true, thank you.
22:05Yes, yes, okay, that's right, Wizz and Liz is a crazy over-the-top time-based score-centric
22:11arcade-style game that starts full throttle and never lets up. And after seeing gameplay footage for this
22:16game again for this list, it brought up some really deep-seated, long-forgotten nightmares from that
22:22gosh darn moon creeping over you during certain levels. Cool. Cool, cool.
