00:10Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're taking a look at 10 Nintendo 64 games that almost
00:16stopped players dead in their tracks due to some late game challenge, difficulty spike,
00:21or just random shenanigans to push our buttons. Let's do this.
00:32Before we begin, we publish new content all week long,
00:35so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:42Banjo-Kazooie.
00:52Who would have thought that a board game slash quiz show would be the thing potentially blocking many
00:57Banjo-Kazooie players from wrapping up this excellent 3D platforming romp? Well,
01:02such is the case with Grunty's Furnace Fun. Essentially, you had to know every single tidbit
01:08about this game, from locations, to sound bites, to game mechanics, and everything in between.
01:13Oh, and if you happen to fail and lose all of your lives, well, it's back to the very start
01:18of the
01:18board for you. Each tile presented a different situation that you had to deal with, with randomization
01:24being a critical part of this high stakes late game challenge. In an otherwise pretty easy 3D
01:30platformer, Grunty's Furnace Fun truly proved who the real Banjo-Kazooie fans were.
01:49Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine
02:00How anyone back in 1999 managed to navigate their way through this cacophony of madness is a mystery
02:06to me. It makes Ocarina of Time's Water Temple kind of just look like a cakewalk by comparison.
02:12Apart from the level's glitchiness, memory overloads due to the psychedelic nature of the level,
02:18and just wonky controls overall, the Ethereum is just a confusing labyrinth that's hard to get your
02:24bearings. It's no wonder then that many Infernal Machine players failed to see the ending of this
02:29game. The Ethereum just feels and plays like a jumbled mess of ideas that, while looking quite
02:35cool overall, makes for an absolutely mind breaking level to actually try to enjoy.
02:50Star Wars Shadows of the Empire
03:01If you hope to see the end credits for this game, then you best be ready to survive an agonizing
03:06onslaught of intergalactic threats, before destroying the central reactor and then getting
03:11the flippin' heck out of dodge before it gets blown to smithereens. Shadows of the Empire is certainly not
03:17a breezy affair, but this final section of the game ups the difficulty curve like no other,
03:22with death coming swiftly, no matter your skill. There are multiple phases to deal with, relentless
03:28enemies, and unclear objectives if it's your first time through. Oh, and zero checkpoints. Yay, what fun!
03:35But I mean, the sense of relief for beating this segment of the game is second to none. Best of
03:40luck.
03:49Are you enjoying this video about N64 games that were almost impossible to finish? Then why not
03:55enjoy more gaming goodness over at our 24-7 gaming livestream right here on Mojo Plays after wrapping
04:02up this video. Just scan that QR code on screen. Body Harvest.
04:16Much like the Ethereum stage from the Indiana Jones game we mentioned earlier,
04:21Body Harvest's Alien Comet segments are unbelievably confusing to navigate,
04:25sort of like the game really wants to obfuscate the ending of the game. Body Harvest isn't really an
04:31easy game overall, but the Alien Comet level and final boss are difficulty spikes that seem to come out of
04:37nowhere. If you haven't already gleaned from the gameplay you are seeing, you must attempt to
04:41control a circular hovercraft of sorts, one kitted out with a powerful arsenal of firepower. However,
04:47the amount of enemy fire that comes your way makes this impossible feeling part of the game
04:52kinda play more like a bullet hell or shmup. It's a lot to deal with and will truly test your
04:57skills.
05:08Superman 64.
05:19Yeah, I mean, come on. We could simply just stop at saying Superman 64, right? And that'd be enough.
05:25The whole game just feels impossible to finish, given how wonky, broken, and deeply unintuitive it is to
05:31try and play. But for the sake of this list and for the sake of specificity, we are focusing here
05:37on
05:37level 14, the mainframe. So you know how flying around in the larger outdoor spaces is already
05:43tedious and unenjoyable? Well, imagine doing that inside a mainframe, where everything looks the same
05:49and it's not clear at all where to go, and there are robots everywhere to punch in the face. Oh,
05:54and
05:54sometimes you even have a countdown timer. Well, the mainframe level tosses every unfun mechanic and
05:59aspect of this game into one area that basically just feels impossible to get through.
06:14Goldeneye 007.
06:23The cavern stage near the end of the game is essentially a labyrinthian endurance test for
06:28bond. While not a long stage, and perhaps a tad bit easier overall than control, it's just a strange
06:34roadblock, especially on 00 agent and 007 mode. Most people got to this part of the game and struggled
06:40to progress to the cradle and then finally to the credits. It all really just comes down to the
06:45number of goons you have to contend with. It feels relentless, especially as you get to that final tube
06:50like chamber where Trevelyan is evading pond yet again. Again, we are primarily focusing on 00 agent and
06:57007 mode here since you are given more objectives and more lethal enemies. Plus, those silly scientists
07:03who just run around in circles like complete hooligans really don't help make matters any easier.
07:16Blastcore.
07:23I have so many fond memories of playing Blastcore with my best friend when I was a kid,
07:28staying up late during a sleepover, eating sugar cubes out of the box like an absolute psychopath,
07:34and trying our darndest to beat this brutally tough yet utterly unique game from developer rare.
07:39Honestly, I don't think we ever actually completed it, probably because some of the game's final roadblocks,
07:45Oyster Harbor and the moon. Now, anyone who has played Blastcore knows that controlling the various
07:50vehicles in this game is akin to tossing sticks of butter onto your shoes and trying to walk around
07:56on ice. In terms of Oyster Harbor, your goal is quite clear. Make a safe path for a nuclear missile
08:02carrier. However, doing so in this level feels next to impossible given how much can actually go wrong
08:08and how many obstacles are in your path, let alone trying to deal with those TNT crates.
08:13And while the moon stage might be a post-credits level, it's still required to beat it if you want
08:18to fully wrap up this fun destructive puzzle adventure. All I really need to say is in regards
08:24to the moon level, level some of the buildings on the moon in a strict time limit with slippery
08:28controls and less gravity. Yeah, good luck.
08:40Robotron 64
08:48Two words easily sum up your time with this game, pure madness. With close to 200 levels known as waves
08:56in
08:56this game, it's kind of no surprise that somewhere along the way, many Robotron 64 players are going
09:02to get to a point where it just feels impossible to beat. This point is so extremely evident when it
09:07comes to waves 190 to 199. They are just downright brutal full stop. The frenetic barrage of enemy fire
09:15and attacks set amid tiny arenas feels impossible unless you've absolutely mastered this game. Heck,
09:21even getting to wave 190 is an astonishing feat all of its own. Now, if you blend the likes of
09:26a bullet
09:27hell genre, the shmup genre and something like vampire survivors together in a blender, then I guess
09:32you would get Robotron 64. Here's hoping you stored up enough lives during your Robotron tenure if you
09:38hope to even make it to the final boss. Turok 2 Seeds of Evil
09:58So, the first thing I think of when I think of Turok 2 is the cerebral boar, if you know
10:03you know.
10:04The next thing I think of when it comes to this game is how it often feels impossible to beat
10:09the
10:09Hive of the Mantids level in hopes of getting to the nefariously evil and downright punishing Primogen
10:15boss. Could golly miss Molly. You thought battling the flood in the OG Halo was hard? Yeah,
10:21it's nothing compared to what awaits you in Seeds of Evil. Trying to even navigate your way through this
10:26dark, ominous, and demanding hive of despair and pain is grueling. This hive is littered with random
10:32corridors, tough as nails baddies, underwater sections, yay, first person platforming, and more.
10:38It's just a lot to deal with despite your brutal arsenal. Again, see the cerebral boar,
10:44and it's clear why many Turok 2 players failed to actually see the end of this game.
10:58Donkey Kong 64
10:59I still remember the point when my wife and I got to the realization that in order to actually even
11:13get to the final boss of DK64, King Krusha K. Rool, you need to have acquired the elusive Nintendo
11:19coin. This, of course, is in addition to obtaining all eight boss keys. 100 golden bananas, the rareware
11:26coin, and four battle crowns. Oh, fun they said. But here we are, shedding light specifically on the
11:33Nintendo coin. Now, in order to obtain said coin, you must beat the original Donkey Kong arcade cabinet
11:39found in Frantic Factory. Not once, but twice. You have to clear it once to get a golden banana,
11:44and then clear it a second time on a higher difficulty to win the Nintendo coin. It's downright
11:49bananas, if you'll excuse the obvious pun here. My wife and I struggled and failed over and over and
11:55over again, and she's the one that beat it. Until somehow, some way, we just managed to do it. Again,
12:00she's the one that did it, not me. She's good at it. It's like the game actively wants you to
12:04never
12:05actually face down King Crush of K. Rool, and thus never beat the game. Man, I tell you,
12:10retro games were, and still are, brutal, but we love them.
12:22So, what did you think of our picks for this list? What N64 games do you think are almost impossible
12:28to
12:28finish? Let us know in the comments. Thank you for watching this video from MojoPlays. Be sure to
