00:09Welcome to MojoPlays and today we're looking at superhero games that go
00:13beyond being a challenge and are famous for their unfairly unbalanced difficulty.
00:26But before we dive in we publish new content all week long.
00:29So, be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:41Wolverine In the 80s and 90s, LJN became notorious as a
00:46publisher of excruciatingly hard, licensed games.
00:49For Wolverine's solo adventure on the NES, one of the most indestructible mutants out
00:54there felt pretty helpless.
00:55Like many tough games of the era, you're bombarded with enemies that seem almost magnetically
01:00drawn to the adamantium in Wolverine's body.
01:03This would be par for the course and almost manageable had the developers not made the
01:08hero's power set such a hindrance.
01:19Whenever Wolverine attacks with his claws, it drains his health, which, for some reason,
01:24he cannot immediately use his healing factor to restore.
01:28Nope, you'll have to find food.
01:30Coupled with the unforgiving enemies and the lack of an invulnerability window after getting
01:34hit, it feels like you're never meant to win.
01:46Spider-Man and Venom Maximum Carnage
01:58LJN rears its ugly head again.
02:01At least this time, it's a decent game, but Maximum Carnage will still kick your ass.
02:06It might not have made it onto the list if not for one simple fact.
02:09While you can play as Spider-Man or Venom, and most beat-em-ups at the time supported
02:14two players, this game is single player only.
02:21From the start, you feel how desperately you could use an ally.
02:25Enemies flood the screen at a near-relentless pace, in numbers that far outweigh what most
02:30general players can handle on their own.
02:32Plus, given the time period and genre, it isn't as if you have access to the many feats
02:37Spidey or Venom could normally use on hordes of goons.
02:58Although not the Superman game you might have expected to see, don't worry, we'll get
03:02to it, this self-titled Game Boy Adventure is probably best left forgotten.
03:06done.
03:07Firstly, his flight.
03:08You have to hold the A button to fly, and release it to fall, which already makes it
03:13hard to avoid hazards.
03:14Then there are those hazards themselves, which can appear suddenly from off the side of the
03:19tiny screen.
03:20And what of Superman's power?
03:21Well, you only have a basic punch attack with short range that doesn't deal much damage,
03:27and can just as easily get you hurt by something else instead.
03:37All of this is made worse by the fact that you can't heal, and only have six lives with
03:42no continues.
03:44How fun.
03:54Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
04:02Growing up during the initial popularity boom of the Ninja Turtles, there were likely legions
04:07of kids aching to get their hands on a TMNT video game.
04:11Unfortunately, if you had an NES, this is what you got.
04:15While each hero naturally had their own weapons, no level of expertise with them could save you
04:20from getting annihilated.
04:28Again, enemy numbers and their placement is borderline malicious, seemingly in an effort
04:33to halt any forward momentum.
04:35When one turtle runs out of health, they're locked until you can rescue them later.
04:39Needless to say, you'll be doing a lot of rescuing.
04:42The game is best remembered for the infamous dam level, in which you must swim through tight
04:46tunnels full of electric seaweed and lasers, disarming bombs on a time limit.
04:51But the whole experience is a lesson in frustration.
05:00X-Men
05:08Released on the Sega Genesis, this X-Men title is a solid, albeit flawed, side-scroller that
05:14probably would have been much more enjoyable if not for a few key things.
05:18Once again, we've got some profoundly annoying enemy placement, but there's also the issue
05:23of some really tricky platforming with jumps that are famously tough to land.
05:33Those two things together are bound to make most players rage after countless deaths,
05:38and then you still have the overpowered bosses to contend with.
05:42However, even more infamous is a moment in Mojo's Fortress at a computer where players
05:47must reset their console to progress.
05:49Without any hint, that's what you're supposed to do.
05:52In a time where those types of meta solutions were far from common, it stumped most players,
05:57causing them to get stuck on a perpetual game over.
06:07The Video Game
06:14Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film was a cultural phenomenon, so a video game tie-in was inevitable.
06:21Yet, for any kids hoping to take on the role of the Dark Knight, the game is brutally unforgiving.
06:27Naturally, it shares a lot of things with other games on the list, but in a maddening combination.
06:39Not only are standard enemies much stronger than they ought to be, they're also perfectly placed to be in your
06:45way while platforming,
06:46and have absurd spawn rates that make it so you have almost no downtime.
06:51Even without the enemies, the platforming itself would still be a challenge since it requires perfect precision.
06:57Bosses also ramp up difficulties severely as you continue, leaving little room for error.
07:11Silver Surfer
07:18Want to play a severely weakened version of a usually mighty hero? Then do we have a game for you.
07:23There are tons of unfair games populating the NES, but Silver Surfer genuinely feels sadistic in its nature.
07:30You go down in a single hit, which is standard for a lot of shoot-em-up games of the
07:34time.
07:34What makes this one especially vindictive is A, the sheer number of projectiles on screen making it feel more like
07:41a bullet hell,
07:42and B, the fact that the Surfer has the biggest hitbox known to man.
07:51You can even die by accidentally bumping into the environment.
07:54And this all obviously means you get very comfortable with the game over screen.
08:05Superman The New Superman Adventures
08:15Two years after Titus Interactive put out a ridiculously tough Superman title on Game Boy,
08:21the studio released something far worse, and therefore memorable, on the N64.
08:25More commonly known as Superman 64, everything horrendous about this game has been shared and laughed at across the internet
08:33for more than 25 years.
08:42Obviously, the unfairness here comes from just how poorly designed it is.
08:46Most people would only ever see the opening level, a timed flight course through a trail of rings with controls
08:52so poor it's way too easy to miss, fail, and have to start again.
08:56Things don't get better either.
08:58The difficulty would be hard to deal with even if Superman didn't control like a slug wading through mud.
09:13The Adventures of Batman and Robin
09:16The Adventures of Batman and Robin
09:31It's just a shame that it also makes you want to be a lot harsher in how you treat Gotham's
09:35criminals, specifically the version on the Sega Genesis.
09:38This version is an intense run and gunner, with enemies pouring from different sides of the screen.
09:43It is utterly relentless, and swapping your focus between all of them gets very overwhelming very quickly.
09:57Playing in co-op doesn't help either, since both players split the power-ups, making it so one of you
10:02is literally always fighting for their life.
10:04It's a game we have respect for, but it definitely tests your patience.
10:17If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game Terrible Influence.
10:22Just launched for purchase at TerribleInfluence.com.
10:25Terrible Influence is a satirical board game about the dark side of fame from the writer of the most popular
10:30girls in school and us, WatchMojo.
10:32Boom. I can make an apology video.
10:35Oh, you so would.
10:36Click on the link in the description to check out the game and be the first to play Terrible Influence.
10:42Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge.
10:54The crown jewel of LJN's unfairly balanced superhero games,
10:59Arcade's Revenge is one of the most aggressive NES games you could seek out.
11:15Although, why you would want to is beyond us.
11:18You have five characters to choose from, Spider-Man, Cyclops, Gambit, Storm, and Wolverine, each with their own unique stage
11:24to complete.
11:25Unfortunately, each of those stages seems to have been engineered just to cause you misery.
11:31They all have some uniquely frustrating aspect.
11:34From the giant spiked ball that endlessly rolls after Gambit,
11:37to Cyclops' minecart gauntlet of traps and enemies,
11:41to Storm's underwater nightmare that caused many players to drown.
11:45But it isn't just the level design that hurts.
11:47None of the levels have checkpoints, the heroes all share the same number of lives, and there are no continues.
11:53You can only restart the game so many times before you simply give up.
12:07What superhero game do you feel was unfairly stacked against you?
12:11Share your thoughts in the comments, and we'll see you next time.
