00:00:00Coming up, this is going to be my mom's favorite show
00:00:04because I'm the only one in studio.
00:00:07Lauren's traveling back to Iowa.
00:00:09D-Rose on his home cam.
00:00:11Speaking of Iowa, we've got all the coverage from the Field of Dreams game
00:00:14plus Brewers and Dodgers, the highlights from last night.
00:00:18And speaking of the Dodgers, are they more vulnerable than you think?
00:00:22And our insider, John Heyman, with the latest on the Yankees injuries.
00:00:26Judge, Bellinger, Rodon.
00:00:28Plus, we're eating good in the studio.
00:00:30Roll the open. Let's go.
00:00:51Good Friday morning. Welcome to MLB Central.
00:00:55We're glad you're with us.
00:00:56I made my co-host disappear.
00:00:59We've got a jam-packed show for you.
00:01:01We can't wait to get started.
00:01:02As mentioned, all the coverage from the Field of Dreams game last night in Iowa.
00:01:07Glad the weather held on to get that game in.
00:01:10Plus, we've got a lot to get to.
00:01:12John Heyman is going to join us.
00:01:14We are also going to be eating, courtesy of the San Diego Padres.
00:01:19But let's bring in Mark DeRosa, who joins us from Atlanta and his home cam.
00:01:23Dero, Lauren is working her way back from Atlanta.
00:01:27She did text us earlier this morning.
00:01:29So I think she is almost back to New Jersey.
00:01:32But how great was the whole Iowa experience, huh?
00:01:37I'm going to be honest with you, Robert.
00:01:39First off, you're getting to live your Field of Dreams right now.
00:01:41That's right.
00:01:42I mean, you've wanted your own show for a while.
00:01:44I've noticed you're trying to sabotage us for a while, but I totally get it.
00:01:48No, all kidding aside, what an opportunity to, like, and I said this yesterday,
00:01:57get caught up in so much and work and just life and stress and everything
00:02:03to unplug for those 48 hours and to go out to Dyersville, Iowa,
00:02:08and to walk through the corn and to kind of have a conversation with my father.
00:02:13And people I've lost in my life.
00:02:15What a reset button.
00:02:17No, it is.
00:02:17So I'm super packed.
00:02:19I got home last night at 9 o'clock.
00:02:21My flight was uneventful.
00:02:23Nice.
00:02:23It was abandoned.
00:02:25I watched the Dodgers give one away last night late, and I wake up ready to rock.
00:02:30Hey, you mentioned your late father.
00:02:34Yesterday, you and I aired the piece where we played catch in the cornfield,
00:02:38talking about our late fathers.
00:02:40If you missed it, it's on my Instagram page, on the network Instagram page.
00:02:43We heard from a lot of people.
00:02:45I read all your messages in the comments, and some of you messaged me as well,
00:02:50and I'm sure you got the same.
00:02:51So thank you very much for all the kind words, and I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.
00:02:58So that was a lot of fun.
00:03:00And take credit for that, Robert.
00:03:01That was a Robert Flores production.
00:03:03That was an idea he came to me about probably a month ago.
00:03:06Yeah, yeah.
00:03:07So I'm glad it worked out, and I'm glad we were able to share our feelings,
00:03:12and I'm sure you have some of those same feelings as well.
00:03:15All right, let's wake it up, and let's start in Dyersville, Iowa.
00:03:18For the Phillies and the Twins, Field of Dreams game.
00:03:24Major League Baseball back in Dyersville, Iowa for the first time since 2022.
00:03:30And, Dero, there were 26 Hall of Famers that were honored pregame.
00:03:34How nice was this?
00:03:36What an honor to those 26.
00:03:38There was 27.
00:03:40One's not in.
00:03:41Don Mattingly was staring across at about half those guys saying,
00:03:44excuse me, I kind of ran the game in the 80s.
00:03:48Yeah, don't forget about me.
00:03:49Kyle Schwarber with the leadoff homer.
00:03:51That's a leadoff homer presented by Budweiser, his 36th home run of the season,
00:03:56his first leadoff homer since 2024.
00:03:59In the second, Luke Kishaw off Aaron Nola.
00:04:05And the Twins are on the board.
00:04:09Hey, Robert, what was funny is when we were leaving,
00:04:12I looked at the flags.
00:04:14They were blowing dead in.
00:04:15Yes.
00:04:16Did you see the ball leaving was pretty special?
00:04:18Hey, Brandon Marsh.
00:04:20This is important here because Brandon Marsh attempting to steal second.
00:04:23He's called out, but noticed the swim move.
00:04:27Don Mattingly challenged.
00:04:28Call overturned.
00:04:30And Dero, the inning continued with another shore bomb from Kyle Schwarber.
00:04:36I think people need to understand he's kind of like the Babe Ruth of this generation right now.
00:04:44Yeah.
00:04:44With the homers hitting.
00:04:45But he's actually getting better as a hitter.
00:04:47He's got his second highest average in his career as of right now.
00:04:51He's pounding lefties again like he did last year.
00:04:54And he's really having a phenomenal season.
00:04:57A great effort by Kishaw, but unable to bring it in.
00:05:01It goes off his glove.
00:05:02Meantime, Dero, Aaron Nola had a very effective performance.
00:05:06Six strikeouts through the first four innings.
00:05:08He's looking good at the last couple starts.
00:05:09Absolutely.
00:05:10Last couple starts, Robert.
00:05:11And that is huge for the Phillies.
00:05:13Bottom five.
00:05:14The Twins are threatening here.
00:05:15Base is loaded.
00:05:16And Nola gets Royce Lewis.
00:05:19Season high tying.
00:05:21Nine strikeouts for Nola.
00:05:23Seventh inning.
00:05:24Brandon Marsh.
00:05:27Third homer of the game for the Phillies.
00:05:30And they go on to beat these Minnesota Twins in Iowa.
00:05:35Seven to one.
00:05:36Here's Schwarber talking about his big night.
00:05:39Maybe in this up there trying to get a good pitch.
00:05:41Got into a good count.
00:05:42And was able to get to a pitch down and in.
00:05:44And send it out.
00:05:46Obviously, the second one required a little bit of luck there.
00:05:49But it was a great overall day.
00:05:51A great experience.
00:05:52We were really excited about this.
00:05:54And fun to be able to walk out with a win.
00:05:57I felt like our lineup did a great job from top to bottom.
00:06:00Grinding on Bradley.
00:06:01He's a really good starter for them.
00:06:02And got him out early.
00:06:03And was able to keep adding on.
00:06:05Marshy was a great day as well.
00:06:08Lauren Shahadi on the postgame coverage.
00:06:10It's the Field of Dreams report presented by John Deere.
00:06:14As the Philadelphia Phillies get the win.
00:06:18More importantly, stay just a half game up on the Arizona Diamondbacks.
00:06:24For the final wild card spot in the National League.
00:06:31So, Deere, there's a lot to unpack here.
00:06:34After last night's win for the Phillies and the Twins.
00:06:37This wasn't just about the pomp and circumstance.
00:06:40This was a big ball game for both teams.
00:06:42I agree with you.
00:06:44Again, I want to kind of give love to Major League Baseball again.
00:06:49The Williamsport game will be coming up.
00:06:52This diving in on the Field of Dreams story.
00:06:55I don't know how you felt about it, Robert.
00:06:58But sign me up for that every year.
00:07:01Bringing two teams there to compete against each other.
00:07:04That thing was so awesome.
00:07:06Americana at its finest.
00:07:08To see the Hall of Famers walk out and all line up.
00:07:11I just thought the whole thing was done so well.
00:07:14And I loved every bit.
00:07:16And I love the fact that the weather kind of cooperated.
00:07:19Yes.
00:07:19But I was sitting there.
00:07:20I was sitting there on a plane last night.
00:07:23As I was flying to Atlanta, I was thinking of the Field of Dreams movie.
00:07:27Costner's had a ton of hits.
00:07:28And I was saying to myself, who would play, like, Robert, who would play you in a film?
00:07:33Who would be your actor?
00:07:34Oh, that's a very, very good question.
00:07:38And I shudder to think of the possibilities.
00:07:41It's not.
00:07:42Well, I was sitting there.
00:07:44And I was wondering to myself, as that game was progressing, was Don Mattingly behind a typewriter?
00:07:51Kind of writing his revised edition of Field of Dreams.
00:07:56And there he is.
00:07:57We got Brendan in edit.
00:07:59We got Bader on controls back there, nailing it.
00:08:03So I wanted to take you inside a little bit on what it takes to rewrite the movie script.
00:08:09First off, that's called the slug line.
00:08:11All right?
00:08:12That gives you an idea where the scene is going to be taking.
00:08:15And we got action.
00:08:17We got the characters.
00:08:18And we're going to have transitions.
00:08:19Read this.
00:08:20Kyle Schwarber strides to the plate.
00:08:23Wynn moves briskly through a sea of corn.
00:08:26He stares down Taj Bradley, a young fireballer.
00:08:29And what happens?
00:08:30Get into the tape.
00:08:31He falls behind 2-0.
00:08:32He tries to come middle in Heater, who one of the most prolific home run hitters our game has seen
00:08:38recently.
00:08:39And it leaves the yard.
00:08:41And we all saw it.
00:08:42That flag was howling in for right field.
00:08:46There was no thoughts of somebody going deep right there.
00:08:50So you have your Field of Dreams report.
00:08:51Most home runs through the first five seasons with a franchise.
00:08:56It's Babe Ruth, Kyle Schwarber, Mark McGuire.
00:09:00I mean, that's what we're dealing with.
00:09:03That's the storybook stuff.
00:09:05Kind of settling everyone into their seats.
00:09:08You want to dream on something?
00:09:10Dream on Kyle Schwarber going deep.
00:09:12You know what else I can dream on?
00:09:14Aaron Nola.
00:09:16Kind of turns back the clock.
00:09:17So enter Aaron Nola, 33-year-old veteran right-hander from Baton Rouge.
00:09:24Toes the slab in Iowa and turns back the clock.
00:09:27With a vintage arsenal, he takes apart a dangerous Twins offense.
00:09:33This team, Twins, came in swinging a bat pretty darn well.
00:09:36And Aaron Nola has been good recently.
00:09:39A 2-9-1 ERA over his last four starts.
00:09:43He leads baseball with 1,657 innings pitch since the start of 2017.
00:09:50And you saw it last night.
00:09:51He had the heater when he needed it, elevated.
00:09:54He had the wipeout knuckle curveball.
00:09:57And when the chips were on the line, Royce Lewis knew what he was getting.
00:10:02It's curveball, elevated heater, curveball.
00:10:05And there's nothing you can do if a pitcher executes at a high level.
00:10:09And you fish outside the zone, and you see Royce Lewis, who had been swinging a hot bat, coming in.
00:10:16Nobody was touching his curveball last night.
00:10:18That's Thursday versus the Twins.
00:10:20Guys, we're 0-10 with eight strikeouts and a whiff percentage of 55%.
00:10:25And he used it almost 40%.
00:10:28So there will be, like we watched Lance McCullers rip 23-2040s in a postseason game.
00:10:34I don't know if Aaron Nola gets a postseason start.
00:10:36Certainly if they advanced, possibly, you might see him and J.T. Real Muto just go to the well with
00:10:42that breaking ball.
00:10:44And then we're going to transition one more time.
00:10:47Got to have a transition.
00:10:49Yeah, got to transition.
00:10:51With a team built for the World Series title, nights like tonight allow you to dream on a parade down
00:10:57Broad Street in Philadelphia.
00:10:59And I mean that wholeheartedly.
00:11:00This team, Dave Dombrowski, has built this team for October success.
00:11:04And I think these players understand that games like the Field of Dreams allow you to dream on a packed
00:11:12Citizens Bank Park.
00:11:14My man Bryce Harper walking out of the corn with Ray-Bans on.
00:11:19Corn clean.
00:11:20You think he doesn't know?
00:11:22He's not an entertainer.
00:11:23He's got 1,038 OPS over his last 17 games.
00:11:27Bryson Stott's been on fire, slashing 379 with a 569 slug over his last 18 games.
00:11:34Brandon Marsh got hot last night.
00:11:36He's got 17 homers, 54 RBIs.
00:11:39There was some savvy deadline pickups.
00:11:42Brooks Raley has a 1-7-6 ERA in 17 games since the start of July.
00:11:47And Duran got to stare down his old teammates last night.
00:11:51Second best fielding independent pitching in Major League Baseball for a reliever this season.
00:11:56And so they are set up.
00:11:59They are set up if they're playing good baseball.
00:12:02And nights like last night allow you to dream on it.
00:12:05Yeah, D-Ro, with the big three of Lozardo, Wheeler, and Sanchez, I mean, the Philadelphia Phillies are nearly unstoppable.
00:12:14They would be on pace for 113 wins.
00:12:15But we talked yesterday about just how big, potentially, Aaron Nola and a resurgence by him could be for this
00:12:22ball club.
00:12:23And he was fantastic.
00:12:24So, you mentioned the Diamondbacks.
00:12:27We showed the graphic here.
00:12:28The Diamondbacks begin a series against the Braves.
00:12:30The Phillies and Twins are off today.
00:12:33They'll resume that series in Minnesota on Saturday.
00:12:36But, potentially, depending on what happens tonight, the Diamondbacks could be tied for that final wild card spot in the
00:12:42National League with the Philadelphia Phillies.
00:12:44Let's stay in the National League, D-Ro, and let's go to Los Angeles.
00:12:47Speaking of movies and films and script writing, we're in Hollywood.
00:12:52Bottom six, Max Muncy, his 23rd home run of the year.
00:12:57And, D-Ro, maybe more importantly, with that homer, Max Muncy is now the all-time leader at this wonderful
00:13:03stadium, Dodger Stadium.
00:13:05And what was so cool, Robert, last night watching is Eric Karros was on the call.
00:13:10That's right.
00:13:10He was able to play to himself.
00:13:12I thought this was – this is a problem, though.
00:13:14Okay, we're – yes.
00:13:15Went to the ninth inning.
00:13:16This is a problem.
00:13:17Edwin Diaz has nowhere to go right now.
00:13:19Jackson Shurio.
00:13:21He can't land the slider.
00:13:23Cuts the lead to four to three.
00:13:24Next batter, Garrett Mitchell.
00:13:28Another run will score.
00:13:29It's a blown save for Edwin Diaz.
00:13:32That's the end of his night.
00:13:33And the Brewers tie the game at four.
00:13:37Two batters later, Alex Vessio.
00:13:39Jake Bowers.
00:13:40Left on left.
00:13:43Sneaks it through the right side.
00:13:45Here comes Churio.
00:13:46Brewers score three in the ninth.
00:13:49And remember, Milwaukee fresh off getting swept in San Diego by the Padres.
00:13:55Move to the ninth.
00:13:56Trevor McGill.
00:13:58Kyle Tucker at the plate.
00:14:00Two outs.
00:14:02And the Brewers take game one of this four-game series.
00:14:06And this is going to be a fun weekend series.
00:14:09But Milwaukee takes game one.
00:14:11Five to four in comeback fashion.
00:14:13Here's Jake Bowers on the comeback win.
00:14:18Yeah, I mean, maybe a little bit dejected after the homer.
00:14:21But then after that, it was like, all right, we just have to have good at-bats here.
00:14:25I mean, we might lose this game, but let's go down our way.
00:14:28And, you know, I think that's what we saw.
00:14:30So, a lot of good at-bats in front of me to set that up.
00:14:33But just putting the ball in play, putting the ball in play the right way and, you know, found some
00:14:38holes.
00:14:39Give me another option.
00:14:41I mean, I think that you've got to, you can't just, you can't just, I can't just say change in
00:14:47low leverage.
00:14:48I have to have other options.
00:14:50And, you know, to be quite honest, none of those guys really are throwing the baseball great.
00:14:58So, you know, you, I mean, that's just kind of the way it is.
00:15:03Dero, as you take a look at the National League standings here, and right now, the Brewers have the best
00:15:10record in the National League.
00:15:11So, they're in line for the bye.
00:15:13Dero, I was struck by something you were saying in our morning meeting because you're very measured.
00:15:18You played in the league for so long.
00:15:20You know the grind of 162, but you said this was a bad loss for the Dodgers last night.
00:15:26Why, in particular, was last night's event so eyebrow-raising or telling for you?
00:15:34Because he emptied the bucket.
00:15:35Dave Roberts emptied the bucket.
00:15:37It was set up for him.
00:15:38Suzuki didn't have good stuff.
00:15:39He was all over the place.
00:15:40He walked two runs in, but he was able to survive and get through it.
00:15:45Then he gets a huge swing from Max Muncy off the bench, which, tip of the cap to Max Muncy.
00:15:50When it's all said and done, we underappreciate this guy to no end.
00:15:54He's got the most home runs in the history of Dodger Stadium.
00:15:57Like, let that soak in.
00:15:59And then what he's able to do in the postseason.
00:16:01So, he comes up in a 2-1 game, hits a three-run bomb in a dead center, give him
00:16:05a 4-2 lead.
00:16:06It's all set up for them to put the Brewers away.
00:16:10Send the Brewers.
00:16:11I mean, they're chasing best record, buys.
00:16:14There's a lot on the line.
00:16:16And the Brewers are limping in after getting swept in San Diego.
00:16:22And then Edwin Diaz comes in.
00:16:24And you know our love affair with Edwin Diaz.
00:16:26Friend of the show.
00:16:27Love having him there.
00:16:28But, man, maybe it's us focusing on him when he was with the Mets, focusing on him going to the
00:16:35Dodgers.
00:16:36When he doesn't have it, he doesn't have it.
00:16:41His fastball was flat.
00:16:43His slider, he couldn't land.
00:16:45They were, I mean, up and down.
00:16:47It was four knocks in a row where Dave Roberts had to go get Vessia.
00:16:52He was, like, forced to go get him.
00:16:54And then Jake Bowers is able to ground ball with eyes and steal a W.
00:16:59But it was funny to watch Pat Murphy.
00:17:01I mean, Trevor McGill in that top of the ninth was getting full-blown hot.
00:17:06Like, they fully expected to come back.
00:17:09And it's a problem if Edwin Diaz can't close it down.
00:17:12I know they have other options.
00:17:14There's no question about it.
00:17:15And I know in the postseason they're going to move some starters to the bullpen.
00:17:20But you've got to get there, man.
00:17:21You want to feel good about what's going on.
00:17:23And some of these guys are struggling right now.
00:17:25Yeah, and that's not to say that this is DEFCON 1 for the Dodgers here.
00:17:29I mean, they went through a similar stretch last year.
00:17:315-13 in July, and they were fine.
00:17:34Obviously went on to win the World Series.
00:17:36But we'll talk more about currently what the Dodgers look like
00:17:40and how that plays with the National League landscape as a whole
00:17:44a little bit later in the show.
00:17:46Let's go to, speaking of Los Angeles, let's go stay in Southern California
00:17:50to Anaheim for the Rangers and Angels.
00:17:52Wrapping up a four-game series between the two.
00:17:55Adam Frazier facing Jacob deGrom.
00:17:58No score.
00:17:59Ducks on the pond.
00:18:01Run scores.
00:18:02Here.
00:18:03But Wyatt Lankford throws out Josh Lowe.
00:18:06Angels still take that 1-0 lead.
00:18:09Nice throw from left field by Lankford.
00:18:11Later in the inning, Mike Trout.
00:18:15Runners still at the corners.
00:18:17RBI knock.
00:18:18It's 2-0 on Jacob deGrom.
00:18:23Mike's been swinging a nice bat.
00:18:25Had a couple bullets before I was laying in the bed in Dubuque.
00:18:29Supposedly, the hotel we were at was haunted.
00:18:32That's what I heard, too.
00:18:33And Al Capone stayed there.
00:18:35So Jacob deGrom leaves the game with some tricep fatigue.
00:18:41He's still shy of the 2,000 strikeout mark for his career.
00:18:46So he leaves early.
00:18:48And then Josh Lowe, with the bases loaded,
00:18:53makes it a 5-0 game as he plates two.
00:18:57Walbert Urena.
00:19:00This guy, this kid's got some nasty stuff.
00:19:04Five strikeouts over six scoreless.
00:19:07And the Angels take three of four from the Rangers in Anaheim.
00:19:12The Rangers fall two back of the Houston Astros.
00:19:15Oh, by the way, Astros Mariners tonight from Houston.
00:19:19Huge series there.
00:19:21Huge series finale here.
00:19:23Guardians Tiger.
00:19:24Dylan Dingler.
00:19:26Off Parker Messick.
00:19:27Angel Hanoa bobbles.
00:19:29Run scores.
00:19:301-0 Detroit.
00:19:32D-Row, Messick had to work around some trouble early.
00:19:35But he settled in.
00:19:36Six strikeouts.
00:19:37Retired 11 in a row at one point.
00:19:39Yeah, he gives you a chance every night, Robert.
00:19:42We chronicled this.
00:19:43It's like they've been able to put some traffic on the base pass
00:19:45talking to Steven Boat.
00:19:47But they're just not able, with runners in scoring position,
00:19:49to get that big knock.
00:19:51Big knock here.
00:19:52When you put pressure on your pitcher to be perfect,
00:19:56you saw his reaction right there.
00:19:58Yeah.
00:19:59Completely frustrated on a solo bomb that should mean nothing.
00:20:03Eduardo Valencia gives the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
00:20:06And then in the eighth.
00:20:07Oh, look who's torquing.
00:20:09Spencer Torkelson makes it 3-0.
00:20:12And then Kenley Jansen trying to close it out.
00:20:17Two outs facing Joe Adele.
00:20:18That's it.
00:20:19That's all.
00:20:20And don't look now, Dero, but the Detroit Tigers,
00:20:24after trading away the best pitcher in the game,
00:20:27they now have a wild-card spot in the American League,
00:20:31a half game up on the Rangers.
00:20:34I mean, it's a testament to A.J. Hinch, their staff, the players.
00:20:39I mean, Tarek Skubel, Casey Mize walked out the door.
00:20:42Maybe it galvanized them.
00:20:43Maybe it's like, all right, shut the door and lock it.
00:20:45Here we go.
00:20:46Tigers.
00:20:47Tigers are hosting the White Sox this weekend
00:20:50for a very significant series in the wild-card
00:20:54and, obviously, the American League Central.
00:20:56Let's step aside.
00:20:57With the trade deadline come and gone, top of the order,
00:21:01how are some of those pieces faring with their new team?
00:21:05John Heyman with the perspective next.
00:21:07Plus, he's got an update on some of the big-time Yankee injuries
00:21:10and where their superstar's at in their recovery.
00:21:13And later, South Stewart goes deep, and then things got weird.
00:21:20What to make of what happened between Stewart, Davis Martin, the Reds, and the White Sox?
00:21:26Also a bit later, with the Red Sox reeling,
00:21:30Peyton Toley delivers, arguably, his best performance of the year.
00:21:33What one metric has Toley as the second-best pitcher in the league.
00:21:40Wait till you see the numbers.
00:21:42We've got some feedback here.
00:21:43Hashtag MLB Central.
00:21:44This one from Jeffrey.
00:21:46The streak continues for row flow.
00:21:48The crushed red velvet filled with the one-man wolf pack.
00:21:51Well, it's one and a half because my man Dero,
00:21:55day game after a night game as well for him,
00:21:57he's in his home cam battling as well.
00:22:00And Lauren, through no fault of her own, making her way back to lovely Secaucus, New Jersey.
00:22:06More Central on the other side.
00:22:08Stay with us.
00:22:16Time now for the Inside Corner with our good friend John Heyman.
00:22:19John, we do have a little bit of breaking news here.
00:22:21Major League Baseball just putting this out on social.
00:22:24The All-Star Game coming back to San Francisco for the first time since 2007.
00:22:30The Midsummer Classic in San Francisco in 2028.
00:22:35Big summer for sports in California in 2028, right?
00:22:40We've got the Olympics in Los Angeles right after that.
00:22:44Yeah.
00:22:44It'd be interesting.
00:22:45Yeah, and there's some speculation.
00:22:46Maybe we could see Major League players in the summer games.
00:22:50That would be great.
00:22:50Obviously, still a lot of things to iron out.
00:22:53Let's talk about the New York Yankees.
00:22:55And they are obviously dealing with some big-time injuries to signature players.
00:23:00Get us up to date on all the news and when we could see some of those superstars, starting with
00:23:04Aaron Judge.
00:23:05Okay.
00:23:06Well, Judge, we really don't know on Judge.
00:23:08I mean, we think mid-September.
00:23:11That seems to be the idea at this point.
00:23:14It's just a guesstimate.
00:23:15We have better guesstimates on the other two everyday stars who are out, Bellinger and Stanton.
00:23:23Yeah.
00:23:23They're thinking around September 1st, give or take, a little bit.
00:23:28Bellinger has now missed 17 days, so that kind of fits.
00:23:31That might actually be a little early from what we expected originally, four to six weeks.
00:23:36Stanton seems to be in the same spot around September 1st, give or take.
00:23:40It could be a little bit earlier than that, but look, the Yankees have just not hit since Judge has
00:23:45been out.
00:23:45Obviously, they've missed Stanton that whole time as well, but they're hitting .220.
00:23:51.220, last in Major League Baseball, 195.
00:23:53And they got shut out yesterday.
00:23:55Right.
00:23:55They had that one big outing of the day before, and that's been about it.
00:23:59195 with runners in scoring position.
00:24:02The slugging number is a little bit better, but look at that on base.
00:24:06Wow.
00:24:06For the New York Yankees to be last and on base over 10 weeks, it is absolutely shocking.
00:24:13They should be better than this.
00:24:15The players that are remaining are still pretty good players, should not be last in any category.
00:24:20But obviously, Judge is a big loss, and so are the other two.
00:24:23And they're still over .500 during that stretch, which speaks to just how effective their pitching is.
00:24:30It's Yankees-Blue Jays, interesting series beginning tonight in Toronto.
00:24:34So the trade deadline has obviously come and gone, and there's already some new additions that are paying big dividends
00:24:41for their new teams.
00:24:42Let's start in Atlanta, Tyler Malley of the Atlanta Braves.
00:24:45Yeah, he's been great.
00:24:46Two great outings already, an ERA under one.
00:24:49It is interesting to note that they also tried for Jacob deGrom, who now is, at least reportedly, is going
00:24:56to need some imaging only through three innings yesterday.
00:24:59They might just be cautious at this point.
00:25:02We don't know that there's anything wrong with DeGrom.
00:25:03But Atlanta was willing to pay most of the freight of the $37 million.
00:25:08Malley obviously is not that expensive.
00:25:11They make good moves.
00:25:12Whatever they do seems to work out for them.
00:25:15Malley has been terrific for them and might be the number two starter now based on how he's doing once
00:25:22the playoffs come around.
00:25:23I mentioned the Toronto Blue Jays.
00:25:25They traded a front-line starter in Kevin Gosman.
00:25:27They traded their center fielder away in Dalton Varshow.
00:25:30But they acquired Jose Soriano, which some were – that raised some eyebrows within the industry.
00:25:36But he's been excellent for the Blue Jays.
00:25:38Yeah, I was surprised along with just about everybody else.
00:25:40We didn't expect them to be getting anything for this year.
00:25:43We thought they were out of it.
00:25:44Right now they're two games out of the wild card.
00:25:46I mean, I'm not shocked that Detroit's in wild card position.
00:25:51You know, they're in a weaker division.
00:25:53They obviously have a very good team.
00:25:55It felt like Toronto coming off the disappointment, the heartbreaking disappointment of the World Series last year.
00:26:01It was going to be a tough year.
00:26:02They've had a lot of injuries and they're only two games out.
00:26:06Soriano's been really good.
00:26:07I mean, he's got an ERA just above two at this point for Toronto.
00:26:11This looks like an excellent move by them.
00:26:13And, look, I mean, if Toronto makes the playoffs, you're going to have four teams in the American League East
00:26:20making –
00:26:20we don't not see that.
00:26:21We never see that.
00:26:23Four teams making the playoffs from one division.
00:26:25Yeah, as you mentioned, it's the Yankees and the Red Sox and the Tigers in the wild card spot.
00:26:29But the Blue Jays, they do have some teams in front of them, but they're just two back.
00:26:32Absolutely.
00:26:32What about Dustin May and his impact for the Brewers?
00:26:35Yeah, I mean, look, the Brewers were criticized for not getting Schuble.
00:26:39But, look, Dustin May, to this point, has outpitched Schuble even.
00:26:43You know, obviously they wanted Schuble pretty badly.
00:26:46They tried pretty hard for him.
00:26:48They were just outbid, you might say, by the Dodgers.
00:26:51And Detroit obviously liked those players better for whatever reason.
00:26:55But they made a comparable offer.
00:26:57Didn't get them.
00:26:57Dustin May has been terrific.
00:27:0013 innings in his two starts with an ERA just above two as well.
00:27:03So, another good move by Milwaukee.
00:27:06That's a team that makes a lot of good moves.
00:27:08So, too, do the Tampa Bay Rays.
00:27:10They are the leaders in the American League East.
00:27:12They got Tyler Wells from Baltimore.
00:27:14Liam Hicks from the Miami Marlins both providing some dividends for the new club.
00:27:18Yeah, Tyler Wells has been excellent.
00:27:20He was very good in Baltimore, but he hasn't been allowed to run to this point for Tampa.
00:27:25He has eight strikeouts in just over four innings.
00:27:28So, he has been outstanding.
00:27:30And Liam Hicks from the other side, he's a very good hitter.
00:27:33He's had some huge hits for Tampa.
00:27:36He has a slugging of 654 as an OPS.
00:27:40Over 1,000 for Tampa.
00:27:42That's another team that makes a lot of good trades.
00:27:45Another team that was criticized, lightly at least, for not getting Scooble.
00:27:51I don't know if they came particularly close, but certainly there were waves being made that maybe they'll make the
00:27:57big move.
00:27:57They didn't make the big move, but they've made two very good moves, at least, at the deadline.
00:28:03And they're playing as well as anybody in baseball right now.
00:28:07So, good for Tampa.
00:28:08And I do want to add, good for you.
00:28:10You are the Iron Man of the show.
00:28:12I know people thought you were kidding as you were saying.
00:28:14It's not a joke.
00:28:15You're here every day.
00:28:16I don't know whether you sleep here or what, but it's really amazing.
00:28:19Yeah, thank you, John.
00:28:20I'm glad someone finally recognizes that, besides myself, of course.
00:28:23Hey, speaking of the Rays, they host the Orioles this weekend.
00:28:27We were talking about the Blue Jays being in the mix.
00:28:30So, too, are the Orioles.
00:28:31They're just two back of the final wild card spot.
00:28:34Much more with John Heyman.
00:28:35He's going to stick around on this edition of MLB Central.
00:28:38Coming up, we're going to hop in the express train, which looked more like the Nolan-Ryan Express on Thursday.
00:28:46We had the return of dominant starting pitching.
00:28:49We've got details and highlights when we come back.
00:29:03Express train, two boxes.
00:29:05We start in the nation's capital for the Cubs and Nats.
00:29:08Cubs were looking for the sweep.
00:29:09Abby Ortiz in the bottom of the fifth.
00:29:11Abby says, I'll be going deep.
00:29:14D-Rub, D-Rub, he's played 11 games in the big leagues.
00:29:17He's got four homers.
00:29:19I mean, you get called up with the Nats.
00:29:22Everybody rakes.
00:29:23Yeah.
00:29:23So, too, does Dalen Lyle.
00:29:25Bayer built the offense.
00:29:26I want to know.
00:29:27Honestly, someone should do a deep dive into what are they looking at.
00:29:30But the story was Cade Cabal.
00:29:32Absolutely.
00:29:32He joins Max Scherzer as the only Nats with at least two starts of seven innings, one hit or less,
00:29:39and ten strikeouts in a single season.
00:29:41A hundred and three pitches.
00:29:44That is a career-high excellent work by Cade Cabali.
00:29:47Nats get the win.
00:29:48Pirates Marling.
00:29:49Speaking of dominant pitching, D-Rub, Braxton Ashcraft was excellent.
00:29:55They are a rotation filled with filthy stuff, and I think sometimes this guy gets lost.
00:30:01Yeah.
00:30:01New addition to the rotation at a spring training, and he has been, as advertised, filthy.
00:30:07Now, Owen Casey gets him here in the ninth, but Ashcraft goes CG.
00:30:13Pirates win 13-1.
00:30:15D-Rub, he did it on 85 pitches there in Miami.
00:30:20Just incredible.
00:30:21Just working the strike zone, pounding it, 13-1 buck over.
00:30:25Reds, White Sox, Sal Stewart.
00:30:28He's going to win Rookie of the Year, right, in the National League?
00:30:31Do I have that right?
00:30:3226th homer of the year?
00:30:35I think you have it right.
00:30:36I'd have to dive in a little bit deeper.
00:30:38Apologies.
00:30:39Apologies.
00:30:40Third inning.
00:30:41Now, Davis Martin goes very high, and, you know, and then he goes high and in and makes
00:30:51contact, and Sal Stewart says, wait a minute, you see Geno saying, now that's not right.
00:30:58D-Rub, that's scary.
00:31:01Yeah, I don't think Davis Martin's doing it on purpose, but you can't not expect the Reds
00:31:07to react the way they've reacted.
00:31:08That's happened a couple times with Sal during this season.
00:31:12Reds end up getting the win 9-8.
00:31:14Mariners, Yankees.
00:31:15How about George Lombard Jr.?
00:31:16You think he's comfortable at shortstop?
00:31:19Very.
00:31:20He's also comfortable at second base, apparently.
00:31:22You're the captain of the infield.
00:31:24If you can get to it, get it.
00:31:26With his hands, I love it.
00:31:28Later that inning, Weston Wilson off Max Freed.
00:31:33Now, Max has missed some time with injury, but that's just the second home run allowed
00:31:36by Freed this season.
00:31:38Logan Gilbert, another solid pitching performance from Gilbert.
00:31:42Six innings, seven strikeouts.
00:31:44Walter.
00:31:45That's right.
00:31:46That's his alter ego.
00:31:47That's his alter ego when he pitches.
00:31:51Mariners shut off the Yankees 1-0.
00:31:53They'll play the Astros beginning tonight.
00:31:55Red Sox, Blue Jays, Wilson Contreras.
00:31:58Max Scherzer, RBI double.
00:32:01Willier Abreu makes it 1-0.
00:32:03However, next batter, Scherzer with the strikeout of Yoshida.
00:32:09And with that, Scherzer retires aside and officially records 3,000 career innings pitch.
00:32:16Congratulations to the future Hall of Famer.
00:32:18Caleb Durbin.
00:32:19Dave O'Brien is calling Caleb Durbin the Durbinator, which makes me think of the Shermanator.
00:32:26Confidence is high.
00:32:28Peyton Tolley, however, following a career-high 14 strikeouts in his last start, another great start.
00:32:35Eight innings, four strikeouts.
00:32:37Red Sox go on to win 7-0.
00:32:41So, Dero, Peyton Tolley was the stopper yesterday, snapping that losing streak.
00:32:47And look what he's done in the last seven starts.
00:32:50He's emerging as something special in that Red Sox rotation.
00:32:54There were so many great pitching performances.
00:32:57You obviously highlighted most of them right now.
00:32:59But you talk about kind of transitioning into a, like you said, a huge stopper and needing the right man
00:33:08on the mound at the right time.
00:33:10And Peyton Tolley's been exactly that for the Boston Red Sox.
00:33:16You want to dive in on the deeper?
00:33:17Yeah, let's get into it.
00:33:18Show us it.
00:33:19Let's go.
00:33:19We're going to try something that's never been done.
00:33:21We're going to go skybox and we're going to go triple hot change in the middle of this thing.
00:33:27We can't do that?
00:33:29Yes, we can.
00:33:30We're going to attempt it right here with Peyton Tolley.
00:33:33Run the tape because if you haven't locked in on number 70 for the Boston Red Sox, you're doing yourself
00:33:39a disservice.
00:33:40This is must-see TV.
00:33:41This is emotion at its finest.
00:33:44This is a big cowboy from Stillwater, Oklahoma, just driving fastball down your throat.
00:33:51But what was interesting yesterday, he started to incorporate the curveball a little bit more.
00:33:55Look at his 2026 ranks, okay?
00:33:57ERA, 18th.
00:33:59I get it.
00:33:59Expected ERA.
00:34:01He's second.
00:34:02So he has been fantastic.
00:34:04Boom.
00:34:05Hot change meet because I want to show where he sits right now.
00:34:092026 expected ERA leaders.
00:34:12He's right behind the Miz at 194 with a 272.
00:34:16There's Dylan Cease at 275.
00:34:19So you need to lock in.
00:34:21He's an entertainer on the mound.
00:34:22And what I love about him, talk about announcing your presence with authority.
00:34:27You know you're getting fastballs.
00:34:30Let's dive into it a little bit.
00:34:32He will ram that four-seamer, elevate it, try and come in on the right-handers.
00:34:37You've heard me talk about it time and time again.
00:34:40If you are able to move right-handed hitters' feet from the left side with four-seam fastballs,
00:34:49you are something special because you open up so many options.
00:34:54And as he gets more comfortable, watch him take apart Mr. McAdoo right here.
00:35:00A little get-me-over curveball, the steel strike one.
00:35:03And then it's four-seam cheesers.
00:35:05And then what does he do?
00:35:06He starts to move his back foot a little bit.
00:35:09Little slider, curveball, and then wipe-out four-seamer in, tunneled off of it.
00:35:16Fabulous.
00:35:17Go there again.
00:35:18He doesn't think you'll come there again.
00:35:20Boom, Peyton Tully with the punch-out and the little stare-down.
00:35:24He's all about it.
00:35:25I love everything when this dude's on the mound.
00:35:28Last time out against the A's, he punched out 14 guys.
00:35:33Yesterday, a little more early swinging from the Toronto Blue Jays, only had four punch-outs.
00:35:38He's walking no one.
00:35:4018 punch-outs and two walks in his last two starts.
00:35:44That's the pitch George has got to hit.
00:35:46You think he's going to go away from the four-seamer?
00:35:49No, he does not do that.
00:35:50And what makes him so successful is the extension.
00:35:54You've heard us chronicle this time and time again on this show.
00:35:58What's your perceived velocity?
00:36:00When you can reach down that mound and turn 94 into perceived 97
00:36:07with spin rate and elevation through the zone and ride, it's something special.
00:36:14And you see it right there, him gaining ground and driving this ball down the mound.
00:36:20Let's go to a couple boards right here.
00:36:22Longest average extension of fastballs.
00:36:25You've got the Miz, obviously.
00:36:26He's a freak.
00:36:27Logan Gilbert pitched his tush off the other day.
00:36:30Brent Suter's been good for the Braves.
00:36:32Cade Smith is an absolute robo-cop for the Guardians.
00:36:36And then there's Peyton Tolley.
00:36:3995.8 average velo, but it plays at 97.5.
00:36:44Give me a heat map right here because I want to show where he attacks the right-handers.
00:36:48It's elevated.
00:36:50And on Thursday, not only was it elevated, but it was inside as well,
00:36:55moving the feet of the right-handed hitters.
00:36:57So you go up there being ultra-aggressive, but he gets you off the barrel.
00:37:03Something else that was interesting, last couple of starts, and Chad Tracy, his manager, said this,
00:37:09he has started to incorporate this curveball to steal strikes early in the count,
00:37:14to get guys out late in the count.
00:37:16You see it.
00:37:17Entering Thursday, he used the curveball 8.5% of the time.
00:37:20On Thursday, he used it 17.6% of the time.
00:37:24Something to watch as he continues to progress.
00:37:28So let's go in and show you a little bit of the curveball, how he's able to use it.
00:37:33He can steal it.
00:37:34You saw it against McAdoo.
00:37:35He can steal a strike early in the count, and then he gets you thinking aggressive.
00:37:42Action.
00:37:42I'm going to be swinging the bat.
00:37:44He's coming with a lot of foreseam fastballs.
00:37:47Elevated.
00:37:48I feel like I can jump him as an offensive player.
00:37:51And then he starts to incorporate a little wrinkle into the game.
00:37:54And it causes massive problems.
00:37:57And he's gotten some horrible swings lately on this breaking ball.
00:38:01See right there, Jacob Wilson.
00:38:03That ball's dying down under their feet.
00:38:05And there's nothing they can do about it because they are on go for the heater.
00:38:10And when you dive in on some of the Stuff Plus ranks,
00:38:13his foreseam fastball, Stuff Plus-wise, is the third best foreseamer in the game.
00:38:18His curveball plays as the fourth best.
00:38:21Overall, he's got the sixth best stuff in the sport.
00:38:25But more than that, he loves the moment.
00:38:29He's an absolute entertainer.
00:38:31We've had him on.
00:38:32He's great.
00:38:34He's fantastic.
00:38:35Yeah, you were asking about who would play me in a movie.
00:38:39Well, Nick Offerman is playing Peyton Tolley in a movie about him.
00:38:43The guy from Parks and Rec.
00:38:45Yes, he is.
00:38:45So, the Red Sox are in Pittsburgh to begin an interesting series against the Pirates.
00:38:49And then, as we said a little bit later, the Blue Jays,
00:38:52just two games back of a wild card spot.
00:38:54They host the New York Yankees this weekend.
00:38:57Great stuff, Dero.
00:38:58Good stuff.
00:38:59Let's step aside.
00:39:00We're going to go around the bases, talk about some of the news items around the league.
00:39:04Throw at me once.
00:39:05Shame on you.
00:39:05Throw at me twice.
00:39:06Now, we've got problemis.
00:39:09Ron Darling, join us to discuss the events yesterday on the south side
00:39:13between the White Sox and the Reds.
00:39:16Here's a good look at Ron Darling.
00:39:18Who's playing Ron Darling in a movie?
00:39:20Ron Darling.
00:39:21I mean, come on.
00:39:23Somebody very handsome.
00:39:24Yes.
00:39:25Robert, do you ever take a day off?
00:39:26Absolutely not, Ron.
00:39:28Absolutely not.
00:39:39Welcome back to MLB Central.
00:39:41Let's go around the bases, and let's start on the south side of Chicago
00:39:43where the Red Sox and White Sox doing business yesterday.
00:39:46Sal Stewart, his 26th home run of the season.
00:39:50That came off Davis Martin.
00:39:51And then in a subsequent A.B., Davis Martin went up and in twice,
00:39:55making contacts on the second attempt.
00:39:58He was ejected.
00:40:00Here's Stewart talking about the incident.
00:40:03Kind of blacked out a little bit when they go up at the head, you know.
00:40:07You know, it happens, you know, maybe.
00:40:09I'm not too sure.
00:40:10I can't really tell you.
00:40:10But I know he apologized after the first one, and, you know, things happen.
00:40:15You know, maybe it slipped.
00:40:16But then the very next pitch just came right back at my face.
00:40:19So, more than anything, it was just kind of a scary moment.
00:40:22And, yeah.
00:40:23I don't want to make this a big deal, man.
00:40:25I really don't.
00:40:26You know, when you play 162 games, a lot of things happen.
00:40:30I'm not sure exactly what happened, but it's scary when two balls are coming up and in.
00:40:33So, that's all I have to say about it.
00:40:35I thought that was extremely blatant, and you can't throw two balls like that head high.
00:40:41You kill somebody.
00:40:42I thought that was terrible.
00:40:43Lost the grip of the ball.
00:40:44The first one went over his head, made eye contact, said, my bad.
00:40:48I had no intention of doing that.
00:40:50And then second one, we were trying to just drive a fastball down and away to kind of reset,
00:40:54which is a good reset for me, and then just lost it again.
00:40:58And blister on the finger to say he probably lost a little bit of a grip there.
00:41:02But, yeah, just there's no intention there.
00:41:06Welcome back to Studio 21.
00:41:07Robert Flores, John Heyman, Mark DeRosa is from home cam.
00:41:10We say good morning to Ron Darling.
00:41:11Ron, I'll start with you.
00:41:12As a former pitcher who pitched a lot of games in the big leagues,
00:41:15what did you make of what you saw yesterday?
00:41:17Well, there's two things that can both be true.
00:41:19One, that Davis Martin wasn't trying to hit Sal Stewart,
00:41:23and that the Reds and Sal Stewart can get angry,
00:41:26and that he can get thrown out of the game.
00:41:28There's a pitch ability that you need to pitch at this level.
00:41:32What do I mean by that?
00:41:33When I was a kid just coming up, I had a two-seam fastball.
00:41:37It really ran in on right-handed hitters.
00:41:38But as an amateur player, I had hit a player in the head once.
00:41:42I never wanted to pitch again.
00:41:44So I learned how to throw a four-seamer, a true four-seamer,
00:41:47that you would throw up in this level just to let the hitter know
00:41:50that you were trying to back him up, move his feet, all of those things.
00:41:53But you knew you could control that pitch, and you're not going to kill somebody.
00:41:57I mean, that ball hit him on the bridge of the helmet.
00:42:00It could have hit him on the bridge of the nose.
00:42:02So when that happens, everyone gets angry from the other side.
00:42:07I saw Will Venable go out there.
00:42:10I know he's trying to argue.
00:42:11My guys have no intent.
00:42:13But even without intent, there's a pitch ability at this level
00:42:17that you have to live up to.
00:42:19Dero?
00:42:20Ron nails it.
00:42:22Two things can be true.
00:42:23I don't think Davis Martin was intentionally trying to hit Sal Stewart in the head.
00:42:27And any human being that played a competitive sport is reacting
00:42:32the same way Sal Stewart's reacting.
00:42:34You had the guy's career.
00:42:36And it's just getting started.
00:42:37And another thing, if you've chronicled the Reds throughout the course of the season,
00:42:41it's not the first time Sal's had balls rammed inside of him, up and in.
00:42:46And Eugenio Suarez ended up getting almost drilled in the head
00:42:49or did get drilled in the head later in this game.
00:42:52So I completely agree.
00:42:55Davis Martin, I don't think, intentionally is trying to do that.
00:42:58But at the same time, you cannot not expect that reaction from the Reds.
00:43:02Yeah, I defer to these two gentlemen who are major league ball players.
00:43:07I haven't played baseball since the Hunger Harbor Little League in 1973.
00:43:11So what do I know?
00:43:12And I always think everybody's up to no good.
00:43:15But I do believe that there was no intent here.
00:43:17It was a mistake.
00:43:18But you can't be on a major league field if you don't have any control at all.
00:43:22And I think he had a blister.
00:43:23So maybe that was affecting him.
00:43:25And that's why he wasn't his normal self.
00:43:26But I think the umpires did the right thing.
00:43:28I don't blame Stewart.
00:43:30And I really, I don't blame the pitcher other than he obviously had something wrong with him.
00:43:35He wasn't his normal self.
00:43:36And he had to be tossed.
00:43:38Dero, continuing with the Reds here, they got some news that Hunter Green is going to have his second Tommy
00:43:43John surgery.
00:43:44The recovery time, typically 12 to 18 months.
00:43:49Where, what does this mean not only for Hunter Green, but in terms of the Cincinnati Reds as a franchise?
00:43:56Yeah, I think when you look at the Reds as a franchise, right, they're built on pitching and Ellie De
00:44:01La Cruz hopefully turning into an MVP.
00:44:03And if you could dream on a Hunter Green, Chase Burns, Lodolo, Abbott, all these guys being hot at the
00:44:10right time, this Reds team could make a run.
00:44:12I look at it from more a personal standpoint for Hunter Green and what he's had to deal with injury
00:44:19-wise and not being able to live up to what we all think he's capable of accomplishing.
00:44:25And what's going to happen is, thank God he signed a 5 for 63 extension, and he's made himself a
00:44:31very rich man because now he's going to have to come back.
00:44:34He's going to miss next year, and he's got one more year on an option, I believe, that I would
00:44:40assume Cincinnati picks up, and he's pitching for his life in 2028.
00:44:45John 2, Tommy John surgeries, obviously that's a very serious thing.
00:44:50Yeah, it's very unfortunate for him personally, D. Rowe is absolutely right, this is an incredible talent, a great 1
00:44:57-2 combination with Chase Burns, and the other guys are not bad either.
00:45:02Lodolo, Abbott's been an all-star, they really do a nice job scouting, pitching, but unfortunately Hunter Green has really
00:45:09had trouble staying on the field.
00:45:11It's too bad because he is an exceptional talent.
00:45:13He's not only an exceptional talent, he's an incredible role model for this game.
00:45:17He is one of our brightest, great kid, so intellectual about the game, smart, he has tentacles that reach out
00:45:27into the community to help others try to play this game.
00:45:31So I think on a personal level, boy, I'm going to miss him.
00:45:34Then I think about these injuries, listen, from 22 to 30 years old, that was my sweet spot.
00:45:41So to miss three or four seasons in there, I have no career, so I just hate to see a
00:45:48young man with this much talent lose that much time.
00:45:50He will be under club control.
00:45:51Can I say something real quick?
00:45:52Yeah, sure.
00:45:53Can I say something real quick, Robert?
00:45:54I went after Hunter Green exceptionally hard, dating back like the spring training previous to try and get him to
00:46:02pitch for the WBC.
00:46:03I thought he would be fantastic being a part of that group and having that arsenal and power stuff.
00:46:09And to his credit, like as bad as he wanted to do it, he felt like he wanted to honor
00:46:14the Reds and kind of put his best foot forward.
00:46:17So for this to happen, I feel terrible for him.
00:46:19Yeah, he has three years of club control, two if you consider his return post his second Tommy John surgery,
00:46:26which he had earlier this week.
00:46:27Let's keep the pitching team going.
00:46:29D-Row, the Washington Nationals offensively, we know what they can do.
00:46:34It's been the run prevention.
00:46:35It's been the pitching.
00:46:36But Cade Cavalli has opened up some eyes, particularly yesterday, eight strong against a very, very good lineup in the
00:46:42Cubs.
00:46:43Yeah, I don't think we should be surprised with Cade Cavalli stepping up.
00:46:48This is a monster of a man.
00:46:50This is a potential number one starter for them.
00:46:52He's been good for a while.
00:46:53He's 6-1 with a 2-4-3, added a sweeper this year, which has certainly kind of upped his
00:47:01game.
00:47:01But I want to throw up a little blind resume because we've focused continuously on C.J. Abrams, James Wood,
00:47:07their offense and everything.
00:47:09But obviously, one of these pitchers is going to be Cade Cavalli.
00:47:14But let's unlock the other guy because you need to start understanding how good he's been for this team.
00:47:20Oh, I got to see.
00:47:20Wow.
00:47:22It's Logan Gilbert, and we've loved on Logan Gilbert for a while here.
00:47:26The numbers are crazy.
00:47:28Yeah, Ron, these are eye-opening numbers.
00:47:31They really are.
00:47:32Just thinking now Cade Cavalli can have his alter ego since you have Walter.
00:47:35Yeah, Walter has Logan Gilbert.
00:47:37Yeah.
00:47:37I just think that I go back to the conflict with Contreras earlier in the season when he said something
00:47:44that he regretted that he'll never say again.
00:47:47And I would say if you're a less of a person, you might not come out of this season intact
00:47:54mentally, physically, to be able to go out there and have the kind of season he's had.
00:47:58So that tells me a lot about his toughness.
00:48:01It tells me a lot about his mental resolve.
00:48:03That he was embarrassed on the mound for something he said.
00:48:07He took it back.
00:48:09He's grown from it.
00:48:10Not only as a person, but a player.
00:48:12And, John, this Nationals team has got some interesting questions they've got to answer.
00:48:16Do we want to extend James Wood?
00:48:17Do we want to extend C.J. Abrams?
00:48:19Maybe Cade Cavalli falls into that mix as well.
00:48:21Well, they absolutely should extend James Wood and C.J. Abrams.
00:48:25I agree with you on Cavalli.
00:48:27He's always had that pedigree.
00:48:28He was a top draft choice, number 22 overall.
00:48:32He was a number 39 in terms of prospects heading into 2022.
00:48:37He definitely has the talent.
00:48:38And this is the kind of guy that they need because they have really had a very nice season.
00:48:43If you look at all that offense that they have, the stolen bases, the power.
00:48:47I like the trades that they made for the future.
00:48:50I think they're doing a terrific job.
00:48:51And they need somebody to step up and be a number one.
00:48:55And this may be the guy.
00:48:56Two more years of club control.
00:48:58The Nats are five back for that final wild card spot.
00:49:01Got a lot of teams to jump.
00:49:02Doesn't seem likely, but you never know.
00:49:04Ultimate Performance now is presented by Snapdragon.
00:49:07Speaking of ultimate performance in pitching, Braxton Ashcraft,
00:49:12the pride of Robinson High School outside of Waco, Texas,
00:49:16once caught seven touchdown passes in a high school football game.
00:49:20But Dero, maybe his most impressive athletic achievement yesterday.
00:49:23He threw a CG on 85 pitches.
00:49:26Yeah, I mean, you talk about stuff.
00:49:28With 10 punches.
00:49:30I know.
00:49:31Let's add in Braxton Ashcraft and then everyone else in the Buccos rotation from Jared Jones.
00:49:37And I know Skeen's something mechanical is a little kind of off right there.
00:49:42And then Bubba Chandler.
00:49:43They are throwing absolute noise at you.
00:49:46But the bottom line is they have a 5.31 rotation ERA since July 22nd.
00:49:51It's the third worst in baseball.
00:49:53So they're starting pitching kind of a dive.
00:49:56And their offense has been struggling.
00:49:59Yeah, they've got work to do.
00:50:00It doesn't look like a postseason berth is in the cards.
00:50:02Maybe something happens.
00:50:03But pitching-wise, they're set up.
00:50:06Yeah, I think they made a big step forward.
00:50:08You know, they really got great production from Ryan O'Hearn and Brandon Lau that they acquired.
00:50:13And now they've scored more runs than they did last year.
00:50:16And they've hit more home runs.
00:50:18But this is going to be the difference for this team.
00:50:21Moving forward, as much as these progress and develop, these starting pitchers,
00:50:26is what's going to take them back to kind of the promised land of the postseason.
00:50:31Ashcraft showed what he can do last night.
00:50:34We've seen glimpses from each and every one of those five starters.
00:50:39And you add Majinsky in there as well and his arm.
00:50:42But we haven't seen enough consistency.
00:50:44And that's where it's going to go to another point.
00:50:46And, John, we just showed the graphic there.
00:50:48Since they've started tracking pitches in 1988, it's him and Randy Johnson.
00:50:52Fewest amount of pitches and ten strikeouts in a CG.
00:50:56Yeah, I mean, we're up here with two Ivy Leaguers, Robert.
00:50:59But I don't think this math really adds up.
00:51:01To get ten strikeouts, that's already at least 30 pitches.
00:51:04I don't know how you get to only 85 pitches with that.
00:51:08I don't know, Ron, maybe you could help me out with that.
00:51:11It's amazing, really.
00:51:12I once had the chart Dwight Gooden, who struck out 16 Pittsburgh Pirates, on 105 pitches.
00:51:19It can be done.
00:51:20It can be done.
00:51:20Hey, the Pirates are back at home.
00:51:23They're hosting the Boston Red Sox this weekend for a series there.
00:51:27Let's take a quick timeout here on MLB Central.
00:51:30Anyone getting hungry?
00:51:31I know I am.
00:51:32We're going to be going back-to-back and a belly-to-belly with another food segment.
00:51:37Plus, the Tigers, they've been eating well as of late.
00:51:41Could another AL Central title be on the menu in Motown?
00:51:46That's all ahead.
00:51:47Our number two of MLB Central is already underway.
00:51:50Come on back.
00:51:51Stay with us.
00:51:57Running late, sounding great.
00:51:59Welcome to a brand-new hour of MLB Central.
00:52:01Let's go front and center, show you what you may have missed.
00:52:04Phillies, Twins, Field of Dreams.
00:52:06Kyle Schwarber got the party started with a leadoff homer in Iowa.
00:52:10His first leadoff homer since 2024.
00:52:12Luke Keyshaw almost made a great catch to Rob Schwarber of a homer.
00:52:16But the story really was Aaron Nola and that season-high tying nine strikeouts in five innings.
00:52:22Phillies win 7-1.
00:52:23Both teams off today.
00:52:25Back at it Saturday in Minnesota.
00:52:27Kyder Montero, solid.
00:52:29Six and a third scoreless.
00:52:30Kenley Jansen saved it.
00:52:32Tigers go on to win 3-0.
00:52:34And right now, the Detroit Tigers are holding on to that final wild-card spot in the American League.
00:52:40Oh, by the way, last week they traded away the best pitcher in the world.
00:52:44But they're still in it.
00:52:45Congrats to the Tigers.
00:52:46Red Sox needing a stopper yesterday in Toronto.
00:52:50And they got it.
00:52:51Peyton Tolley has dominated in his last three starts in the month of August.
00:52:56An ERA of 1.35.
00:52:59Red Sox win 7-0.
00:53:02As the Red Sox are in Pittsburgh, I believe, to take on the Pirates this weekend.
00:53:09Mariners are in Houston this weekend to take on the Astros.
00:53:13Well, they shut out the Yankees yesterday.
00:53:15Logan Gilbert, excellent.
00:53:17Six scoreless, seven Ks.
00:53:18Mariners get the win 1-0.
00:53:21Will Weston provided the offense with a solo home run.
00:53:25A very interesting and intriguing series beginning last night in Los Angeles.
00:53:30Dodgers, Brewers, Jake Bowers with the go-ahead knock.
00:53:34Kyle Tucker flies out to end it.
00:53:37And the Brewers win game one of this four-game series in comeback fashion, 5-4.
00:53:44Gatorade asking, is it in you?
00:53:47Fueled by Gatorade.
00:53:50Jake Bowers, look what he's done in the last 16 games.
00:53:533-39, three homers.
00:53:56He's slugging 5-71.
00:53:57He's got an on-base of 4-41.
00:54:00Nine ribeye steaks, including yesterday's big one at Dodger Stadium.
00:54:04Robert Gasser, Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
00:54:07That's the pitching matchup tonight at Dodger Stadium.
00:54:10Are you ready and are you hungry?
00:54:13The dog of the north is what it's called.
00:54:15Pretend you're on the Food Network.
00:54:17Oh, look.
00:54:18Double Mitch with Axio.
00:54:19It's like an explosion of flavor in my mouth.
00:54:22Picture-o, dog.
00:54:23Don't whip cream on anything.
00:54:25Is that something on my face?
00:54:26Polish cannonball is fried.
00:54:28Okay.
00:54:28And a funnel cake.
00:54:29Oh, you got me.
00:54:30Didn't you hear me?
00:54:30I got you a funnel cake.
00:54:31Yeah, yeah.
00:54:31The Boomstick Burrito, gentlemen.
00:54:34You guys are not going to get a job.
00:54:35It's just a smoky.
00:54:36It's a weird network.
00:54:48The food courtesy today comes from the San Diego Padres.
00:54:51And you know the food scene in San Diego, Southern California.
00:54:55It's excellent, especially when it comes to Mexican food.
00:54:58So, you know, we're off to a good start.
00:55:01Drawing on a variety of local favorites.
00:55:03The Padres Concessionaire Delaware North has debuted several new stadium-exclusive items
00:55:10to the ballpark this season, one of which includes the shortstop.
00:55:15That's the sandwich right here.
00:55:16It's made with braised beef, short rib, borson aioli, an au jus served on a French roll with
00:55:22kettle chip.
00:55:23It's available on the main concourse in Section 100.
00:55:26Go ahead and dig in, guys.
00:55:27Okay, here we go.
00:55:28That's going to be right behind home plate Section 100.
00:55:31Also, we've got the carne asada fries, which debuted this year.
00:55:37They feature waffle fries.
00:55:39You've got guacamole, sour cream, shredded cheese, pico de gallo.
00:55:44These fries, which are also a Petco Park exclusive created by Delaware North, can be found on the
00:55:51terrace level.
00:55:53That's at the Alesmith 394 restaurant near Section 217.
00:55:58Now, because I'm having to do a lot of the talking, most of the talking, I've already sampled the fries.
00:56:03They are amazing.
00:56:05It is absolutely everything you want in a loaded fries.
00:56:09I mean, the carne asada and the pico de gallo, it is excellent.
00:56:12What do you guys think?
00:56:13Well, I tried it, too, and this is unbelievable fries, but this short rib sandwich.
00:56:18Really?
00:56:18To die for, just melts in your mouth, right, John?
00:56:21I'm with you.
00:56:22Short rib, excellent.
00:56:24I mean, it's not the pastrami sandwich of cats, but it is.
00:56:27Now, I'm kind of in a conundrum here because the fries I've already started on.
00:56:33The sandwich I want to save for the crew, but I also want to try the sandwich.
00:56:38So, go ahead.
00:56:39Why don't you break it in half?
00:56:41You have clean hands.
00:56:43You know, you're meticulous about how you take care of yourself.
00:56:45Clean-ish.
00:56:48You know, we'll just save it.
00:56:50I'll just save the fries.
00:56:51And once again, thank you to the San Diego Padres.
00:56:54Thank you to our crew here in Secaucus to put this all together.
00:56:57The Padres in Delaware North, the braised beef short rib with all the fixing.
00:57:03That's in Section 100, right behind home plate.
00:57:05And then these beautiful and delicious carne asada fries.
00:57:09That is in Section 217.
00:57:12So, thank you very much.
00:57:13Hoodie.
00:57:14Always makes you feel so macho when you wipe your mouth and you have makeup.
00:57:17Yes.
00:57:18And that park is a fantastic experience.
00:57:22It's great.
00:57:22It is jam-packed nearly every Friday night.
00:57:24And the San Diego Padres are playing some good baseball.
00:57:27All right.
00:57:27Up next in this, hour number two of MLB Central.
00:57:30We're playing ball or strike.
00:57:31Among the questions we'll be talking about and attempting to answer
00:57:36is a fourth consecutive division title for the Brewers
00:57:39in serious jeopardy thanks to the Chicago Cubs.
00:57:43Stay with us.
00:57:45More Central after this.
00:57:53All right.
00:57:54One of our favorite games, ball or strike, is up next.
00:57:57If you agree with my statement, it is a strike.
00:58:01If you disagree with it, it's a ball.
00:58:04Thank you.
00:58:05D-Rose back here with Ron Darling.
00:58:07D-Rose, I'll start with you.
00:58:08Ball or strike.
00:58:09The Tigers will be in first place in the AL Central by the end of next week.
00:58:15They host the – they got a series with the Tigers beginning today.
00:58:20You know, I was looking at the schedules coming up.
00:58:23I'm sorry, the White Sox.
00:58:24Sorry.
00:58:24I'm going to say this is a ball.
00:58:26I think the Tigers ultimately do take over the top spot in the Central,
00:58:30but I'm going to let it bleed into like the first 10 days of September before that happened.
00:58:36What do you think, Ron?
00:58:37This is the upcoming schedule.
00:58:38Got the White Sox beginning today.
00:58:40I'm going to say strike.
00:58:41And the reason I say that is for something that D-Rose said earlier in the broadcast,
00:58:46and that was, you know, when you're a teammate coming down the trade deadline
00:58:50and you lose two big pieces, right?
00:58:52The big piece, Skolbo, and, of course, Mize.
00:58:54Yeah.
00:58:54You are so sick of, tired of talking about the trade deadline and who you're going to lose
00:59:00that sometimes when those players, as good as they are, are not on your team anymore,
00:59:06now you really become solid as a team.
00:59:09So I'm going to say yes.
00:59:10They're going to be in first place at the end of the week.
00:59:13Tigers not only have designs on the American League Central,
00:59:16but right now they are a half game up on the Texas Rangers for the final wild card spot in
00:59:22the American League.
00:59:23Let's go to the National League, where the Milwaukee Brewers,
00:59:25they have won three consecutive National League Central Division titles.
00:59:30They got a big win yesterday against the Brewers.
00:59:32Ron, I'll start with you on this one.
00:59:34Ball or strike, the Brewers' fourth consecutive division title is in jeopardy.
00:59:39That's a ball for me.
00:59:41I just, I think because of their sustained success, I am a believer in what they do there in Milwaukee.
00:59:47They find a way each and every time.
00:59:49Coming off a huge sweep against the San Diego Padres.
00:59:54They come into Los Angeles and win a game back, fight back against Diaz and the relievers.
01:00:00So I just, I'm a big believer in the Milwaukee Brewers.
01:00:03They always get it done.
01:00:04And they're the first team, the 75 wins again, like they were last year.
01:00:09Dero, the deficit is four, but these two teams do play each other seven more times.
01:00:13Yeah, there's 40 games left on the docket for the Cubbies, 71 and 51, if we were just looking at
01:00:20that.
01:00:21I'm going to say strike here.
01:00:22I know four games, it's doable.
01:00:26I loved what Jed Hoyer did at the deadline.
01:00:29Me too.
01:00:30Talking in Kevin Gosman and Clay Holmes and Zephyr Johns, from a starting pitching perspective,
01:00:36Ronnie, you know this, and I was a position player.
01:00:38The game begins and ends on the mound.
01:00:40If every time that starting pitcher looks at the position players and says,
01:00:44you guys are, you guys ready to go?
01:00:46And we all run out on the mound.
01:00:48There's a feeling that you've got a chance every time with the Cubbies right now,
01:00:52who they're towing a slab with.
01:00:54Yeah, I believe the, we're, Dero, you, myself, and Lauren will be handling one of those Brewers-Cubs games early
01:01:00next month.
01:01:01Well, September 2nd, MLB Central will be calling the Brewers and Cubs.
01:01:06That game should have some big-time implications.
01:01:10Let's talk about the Los Angeles Dodgers, who the Milwaukee Brewers came back to beat yesterday.
01:01:15Dero, we've got some numbers here.
01:01:18Take a look at the run differential here that the Los Angeles Dodgers,
01:01:22worst run differential since July 26th.
01:01:25It's somewhat stunning to see them on this list.
01:01:28So ball or strike, Dero, the Dodgers are more vulnerable than we think.
01:01:35Yeah, it's a ball for me, Robert.
01:01:37I get it.
01:01:38It's a cute narrative right now.
01:01:40They are so deep, and they are allowed to kind of whiff on a few of the signings over the
01:01:45years.
01:01:45Andrew Freeman gets a lot of love, but he's able to manipulate it with some of the cash he has
01:01:51and miss on some.
01:01:52I just think that they can do so many things once everybody's healthy and firing in October.
01:02:01And Freddie Freeman's hit 400 over the last some-odd games, but he hasn't had an extra base hit.
01:02:07You know, that's going to change.
01:02:08Mookie will have a moment.
01:02:10Otani, it's too much, so I'm saying ball.
01:02:13And the numbers bear it out here.
01:02:14They've gone through this before, Ron.
01:02:16It's a ball because I think what happens is they just get bored at some point, and they kind of
01:02:21take, you know, a couple of weeks off, three weeks off.
01:02:24But think about what's going to happen for this team.
01:02:27Blake Snell just started through a great four list.
01:02:30He's going to be back with limited innings.
01:02:33It means in October he'll be pitching his best baseball.
01:02:36Blast now is going to come back with limited innings, 100% and ready to go.
01:02:42The bullpen will kind of sort itself out.
01:02:44I'm sure they'll get Blake Trinan back at some point.
01:02:46Yeah, class now.
01:02:48Class now, that will help.
01:02:49And I just think the Dodgers know how to get it done.
01:02:53And once they get to the postseason, no one does it better.
01:02:55Ron, I'll start with you on this one.
01:02:57Mariners-Astros beginning a huge series this weekend in Houston.
01:03:00Baller strike.
01:03:01This weekend is a must-win series for Seattle.
01:03:05I strike.
01:03:06I think it is a must-win.
01:03:09Now, listen, there is plenty on the schedule.
01:03:11So intellectually, you know the math.
01:03:13They can come back at any point.
01:03:15But I think they need it for themselves.
01:03:18I think they need to prove it to themselves that they can play a solid series coming off
01:03:23a nice win against the Yankees.
01:03:26Gilbert's fine performance.
01:03:27Just to go in there and say, okay, we've had really kind of a bad season.
01:03:32But we're going to pick it up against one of our main rivals and have one of those series
01:03:36where you think to yourself, hey, we're back.
01:03:38We're going to get it going.
01:03:39It would help if Raleigh, too, in this series has a big series.
01:03:42Yeah, that's true.
01:03:43Dero, the Mariners have pretty much owned, quote-unquote, the Astros recently.
01:03:47They're five back in the division.
01:03:50Baller strike.
01:03:51Yeah, it's a strike for me.
01:03:52It's time to go.
01:03:53120-some-odd games into the season.
01:03:55Waiting for Seattle to make a move.
01:03:57Logan Gilbert set the tone yesterday.
01:04:00Getting a 1-0 win.
01:04:01You go to Houston.
01:04:03On paper, it matches up for you to win the first two games.
01:04:06And then Brian Wu against Hunter Brown is kind of a crapshoot up in the air.
01:04:10But it's time.
01:04:11Seattle's too talented a team.
01:04:13We've been waiting for them to get rolling.
01:04:15For whatever reason, it hasn't worked.
01:04:17But they can come together for the last 40 games and find a way in.
01:04:21And if playing hot baseball in the American League in October,
01:04:25anybody can represent the American League in the world.
01:04:27No doubt.
01:04:28The Mariners 7-1 against the Astros so far this season.
01:04:32They obviously own the tiebreaker with the Astros.
01:04:35And that series begins tonight.
01:04:36We'll wrap it up with this one.
01:04:38And I think this is something that we can all identify with.
01:04:40Baller strike.
01:04:41You have lost all hope in public travel and public transportation.
01:04:45That is a major strike for me.
01:04:47I don't do it very often.
01:04:49Certainly not as much as you two.
01:04:50Ron, what about you?
01:04:51It's an absolute strike.
01:04:52I expect nothing.
01:04:54I expect nothing.
01:04:55I'm awarded each and every time.
01:04:57And no one flies in a more comfortable position than I do.
01:05:01And I'm still disappointed.
01:05:03D-Row?
01:05:04Listen, no one's traveling more than me at that network.
01:05:07I don't believe.
01:05:08We, we, we, we, we, this is 100% of strike.
01:05:11I pack three things.
01:05:13Deodorant, underwear, and my patience.
01:05:15Yeah, that's good.
01:05:16Because if I hear the words air traffic flow control into newer, one more time.
01:05:24Well, look, I, I think we need to just start over.
01:05:26I'm talking, just tear it down.
01:05:28Let's start with the horse and buggy and work our way back up.
01:05:32Let's see if we can kind of fix some of the errors there.
01:05:36My, my favorite plane story about someone traveling from this network.
01:05:40We had a little, a meeting, production meeting.
01:05:43Harold Reynolds was in there.
01:05:45One of our fine assistants comes in and was complaining.
01:05:48I had to sit and 25 B in between these big people was horrible.
01:05:52And Harold said to him, I didn't know there were 25 rows in a plane.
01:05:57Hey, Harold's only one through five.
01:05:59That's pretty much, that's pretty much it.
01:06:02So that story tracks Geico ballpark cam takes us to beautiful Dodger stadium,
01:06:06where after the Brewers came from behind to beat the Dodgers in game one of this four
01:06:11gamer, they're back at it tonight in a good pitching matchup.
01:06:14Robert Gasser and Yashinobu Yamamoto.
01:06:18You can watch it on brewers.tv if you're available or the Dodgers network or just
01:06:24about anywhere else.
01:06:24Well, not anywhere else, but you know what I mean.
01:06:27More central on the other side.
01:06:40It's amazing that anyone can even hit this guy the way he throws.
01:06:43This continues to put together a tremendous season.
01:06:46Swing and a miss snuck him out.
01:06:48He's got him looking, striking out the side.
01:06:50And you can see the emotion.
01:06:51He's such a competitor.
01:06:52He's loving life.
01:06:53A 10-pitch inning at the time he required it most.
01:06:57What an incredible performance again.
01:06:59Another excellent outing in what has been a stretch of great outings.
01:07:05Pitcher power rankings are presented by Sage.
01:07:08Jacob Mizorowski is at the top.
01:07:11Ron Darling, anything else jump out at you on this list?
01:07:13One.
01:07:14Dylan Cease signs that big contract and delivers.
01:07:17It's not that easy to do that.
01:07:19But I think things happen in this game where I go, you know, maybe I couldn't play.
01:07:24And it was when Mizorowski had that complete game and I got the report that he threw 58 pitches over
01:07:30100 miles an hour.
01:07:32I don't understand that type of pitch.
01:07:34I think what's very interesting, Troy Melton at number 10 on this list.
01:07:37Tarek Skubel gets traded by the Tigers.
01:07:39Oh, look at us.
01:07:40Look at the Tigers.
01:07:41They might have an emerging ace of their own again.
01:07:45And if Drew Rasmussen is not hurt because he's had a lot of injuries, he is excellent all the time.
01:07:51All right.
01:07:51Ballpark Cam takes us to Wrigley Field.
01:07:55Geico Ballpark Cam.
01:07:56Afternoon game for the Chicago Cubs.
01:07:59First game of the day taking on their longtime rival, the St. Louis Cardinals.
01:08:02It's a game that can be seen exclusively on Apple TV, Apple TV with an afternoon game.
01:08:09Matthew Libertor gets the start for the Cardinals and Clay Holmes gets a start in front of the home crowd.
01:08:17When we come back in honor of America's 250, Major League Baseball is counting down the top fan moments from
01:08:26over the years.
01:08:27We've got a peek at the list next.
01:08:42Welcome back.
01:08:43Introducing 250 for 250, 25 top 10 lists that celebrate the plays, people, rituals, and moments that make baseball America's
01:08:54game.
01:08:55In conjunction with America's 250th celebration, Major League Baseball scoured the archives,
01:09:02polled our writers, and reached out to fan communities to find 250 things with baseball.
01:09:10Mark DeRosa is via his home cam.
01:09:11Ron Darling is here.
01:09:12Lauren Shahadi has been working her way back from Iowa to back to New Jersey.
01:09:17All right, guys.
01:09:17Let's count them down.
01:09:18We've got the 250 for 250 fan moments.
01:09:23I've got the top 10 list.
01:09:25No way.
01:09:25Right here.
01:09:26We're going to run through them all.
01:09:27Starting at number 10, Dero, we've got a brand new entry.
01:09:32This happened this year.
01:09:33The tarps off movement around baseball started in St. Louis, though.
01:09:40This thing caught absolute fire.
01:09:43Ollie Marble bought out that whole section for them to come back.
01:09:46Kind of confused Cardinals kind of roster with some energy there.
01:09:51That was awesome.
01:09:52You know, I do a lot of games all over, and this is an event that happens in every ballpark
01:09:58every night now.
01:09:59Yeah, it's almost like the wave.
01:10:01This generation, the wave.
01:10:04Not too long ago, back in 2021, number nine, one of the moments that we discussed during our Ham and
01:10:12Eggers segment, Ron.
01:10:14Ron, this is a Brewers fan mansplaining baseball to his female companion.
01:10:21You know, when I was in high school, I was going to go to the major leagues, but I hurt
01:10:25my elbow.
01:10:25That's right.
01:10:26But before I hurt my elbow, I used to be able to spin it.
01:10:28That's right.
01:10:29They come right off that middle finger.
01:10:30Guy after guy was struck out.
01:10:33You want to have a drink later?
01:10:34And, Dero, the crazy thing is he did not know this young lady before the game started.
01:10:38No, I'm just kidding.
01:10:39I have no idea.
01:10:40I have no idea.
01:10:41You think she's interested in spin rate, talking about his breaking ball in high school?
01:10:46The look on her face would suggest no.
01:10:49She is classic semi-pro.
01:10:52Yeah.
01:10:53All right, let's go back some 30-plus years.
01:10:57At number eight, 1992, Don Mattingly.
01:11:00Got a little popcorn, Dero, from a young fan.
01:11:03Listen, Donnie Baseball, you know.
01:11:06He was the one poster hanging in my bedroom as a young kid.
01:11:11Do no wrong.
01:11:12He'd come at you with the clean shaven, with the mustache, with the mullet.
01:11:16He'd steal popcorn from children.
01:11:18And yesterday, like I said, it had to be interesting for him to sit there and watch all those 28
01:11:24Hall of Famers come out of the corn and wonder.
01:11:26Hey, Ron, you know what it's like to play in this city.
01:11:29When you're as cool as Don Mattingly playing for the Yankees?
01:11:34And the numbers he was putting up.
01:11:36Dero absolutely should be in the Hall of Fame, Don Mattingly.
01:11:40I played against Don in AAA ball, and he was a Columbus Clipper.
01:11:45And in Columbus, if you do something great, they ring a bell.
01:11:48Let's just say the bell was always ringing when I was facing Mattingly.
01:11:51Let's continue the countdown to the top 10 fan moments from over the years.
01:11:55At number 7, we've got this youngster dressed up as a Ninja Turtle, throwing the ball from the upper deck
01:12:04down to the lower deck.
01:12:08That's a tough one, Dero.
01:12:09That's a tough one.
01:12:11As a dad, as a parent, that's tough.
01:12:13I mean, what are we to expect?
01:12:15He went full-blown Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, and he wasn't having it.
01:12:20He's not into the shenanigans.
01:12:21You're probably, though, saying, as a parent, you're doing okay, because the kid wants to return the ball so the
01:12:28guys can play more.
01:12:29There, she's showing kindness.
01:12:30At number 6 might be our most controversial entry.
01:12:34This happened back in 2001 at Fenway Park.
01:12:39Red Sox fan throwing pizza at another fan.
01:12:42Dero, I know you've got some thoughts on this.
01:12:44Hey, this triggers me.
01:12:47There's no denying.
01:12:48You don't throw a full slice of pizza.
01:12:51If it was cross, I might give him a pass.
01:12:54It's a full slice.
01:12:56I'm turning.
01:12:57Me and you, parking lot, full fist fight.
01:13:00That's what's happening.
01:13:01And, Ron, when I see this clip, I think of Don Orsillo and the late-raped Jerry Remy just totally
01:13:08cracking up.
01:13:09You feel like this is the Supruder film for Fenway Park.
01:13:12I think you're right.
01:13:15If you can somehow listen to Orsillo and Jerry Remy, the rem dog, talk about this entire situation, it's one
01:13:21of the funniest bits that's ever been on by two announcers.
01:13:25Just YouTube, Orsillo, Remy, great moments.
01:13:28It makes me mad.
01:13:30You'll be hooking, Dero.
01:13:33Yeah, I'm swinging.
01:13:34I'm not – that guy in the Patriots jacket is – he's in a bad spot.
01:13:39I'm telling you that.
01:13:39Shout out to the flip phones when we were a decent society.
01:13:43We are halfway through our countdown.
01:13:46At number five, this is a nice, wholesome moment, Ron.
01:13:49Young Pirate fan celebrating his birthday.
01:13:52His buddies telling the outfielders, hey, this is his birthday.
01:13:57And the Pirates oblige.
01:13:58I don't know who threw it to him, but how great was this?
01:14:01You know, one of the joys, I happen to have a son that's 10 years old, and I'm around these
01:14:07age kids all the time.
01:14:09It's the best age.
01:14:10They have – that's the best age.
01:14:11They have a love for each other that is just palpable.
01:14:16Yeah.
01:14:16Dero, this is nice.
01:14:17Nice way to clean the palate.
01:14:19Honestly, it's what it's all about.
01:14:21I mean, it really, truly is.
01:14:22I know you're focused on competing at the highest level, but when you can change a kid today like that,
01:14:28special.
01:14:28The Pirates are involved at number four on our countdown of the top ten fan moments, 250 for 250.
01:14:36A young Pirate fan gets some – the batting gloves from Andrew McCutcheon.
01:14:43Man, honestly, how good is that?
01:14:46He changed – they followed Andrew McCutcheon for the rest of their lives.
01:14:50Ron, quick story.
01:14:51I'm sitting in traffic leaving Yankee Stadium as probably a 10, 11-year-old,
01:14:56and an Acura NSX pulls up alongside him, like, that has to be a Yankee, so I'm waving out the
01:15:01window.
01:15:01Window rolls down tinted.
01:15:03Matt Noakes goes, what's up, kid?
01:15:05I followed Matt Noakes for the rest of his career.
01:15:09That's a big – that's a big league move when you say, what's up, kid?
01:15:13Wow.
01:15:14Come on.
01:15:14That's – you were just missing, like, a Coca-Cola bottle or something, you know, like, mean Joe Green.
01:15:19Yeah, I had a kid on Route 3.
01:15:22He was also waving to me this morning, but he had just one finger on his wave.
01:15:26So, much different.
01:15:28Salute.
01:15:29Yeah, much different scenario.
01:15:31At number three on the countdown, back in 2010, Ichiro runs into this young lady in the stands,
01:15:38and she goes crazy.
01:15:41I mean, she's starstruck here, Ron.
01:15:43I mean, this is at the height of Ichiro's powers.
01:15:47I remember that later – I don't know how old she was – she came back and threw out the
01:15:52first ball,
01:15:52and Ichiro surprised her again.
01:15:54But, I mean, as a ball player, this makes you feel pretty good.
01:16:01Ichiro, Dero, had the Pacific Northwest on lock.
01:16:05I'm not a lip reader.
01:16:06I think she said, Ichiro, touch me.
01:16:09I have to call my mom.
01:16:11Is that – I think that's –
01:16:12Yeah, her friend didn't seem quite as enthused, but I'm glad this young lady is at number three on the
01:16:17countdown.
01:16:18All you've got to do is throw out 265 hits a year, and then you get that kind of ball.
01:16:21That's right.
01:16:22The Pirates, again, are on the countdown.
01:16:25This happened just this year as well.
01:16:27Jake Mangum throws this ball to that young man, and he and his sister enjoy that moment and share a
01:16:38hug.
01:16:39Again, like, it just brings tears to your eyes, huh?
01:16:42Anyone who's had brother and sister, brothers and sisters, knows that this is not always the case between them.
01:16:48That's true.
01:16:49But when the push comes to shove, for him to do that for his little sister –
01:16:53Oh, wow.
01:16:54That doesn't get sweeter than that, right, D-Roll?
01:16:58That's awesome.
01:16:59And he made the play.
01:17:00Yeah.
01:17:00And he dropped that.
01:17:01That's right.
01:17:01He didn't make it all the way up.
01:17:03The pressure was on.
01:17:04He was up for the moment.
01:17:06The hug is everything.
01:17:07No, the hug is great.
01:17:09That's great.
01:17:10I love that.
01:17:10He's got the Paul Skeen's WBC jersey.
01:17:13Nice.
01:17:14That's a great, great moment.
01:17:15At number one on our top ten fan moment, a few years back, back in 2022, Aaron Judge goes deep
01:17:23in Toronto.
01:17:23A Blue Jay fan gives a Yankee fan the home run ball.
01:17:29And, I mean, that restores faith in humanity, right?
01:17:34This is why I live by the adage, I've never met a bad Canadian.
01:17:40Yeah.
01:17:40I mean, that just is one of the greatest things that you'd ever see.
01:17:45And that's the home run by Judge, and he gives it to the kid with the Judge shirt on.
01:17:50Oh, how about that, D-Roll, huh?
01:17:52Life lesson, Robert, if everybody was just a little bit nicer.
01:17:56If everyone is a little bit nicer.
01:17:58But they keep throwing pizza.
01:17:59I know.
01:17:59That's the problem.
01:18:00Hey, one moment that I was surprised wasn't on the list,
01:18:04but considering what the parameters were in the condition, Jeffrey Mayer, D-Roll in 96.
01:18:11Tony Trasco had that.
01:18:13I mean, you know I'm a Yankee fan at heart, right?
01:18:16It's egregious.
01:18:17Watch a game.
01:18:18Come on.
01:18:19It's egregious.
01:18:20It's a dump.
01:18:21Probably an out.
01:18:22Put Garcia, I mean, the umpire.
01:18:26Richie Garcia?
01:18:26Richie Garcia right in the middle of all that.
01:18:29Davey Johnson's the manager of the Orioles.
01:18:30Um, Meyer ended up being the hits leader for Wesleyan College as a ball player.
01:18:38You know what?
01:18:39I think I remember hearing that he played college ball.
01:18:42That's great.
01:18:43Tony Trasco.
01:18:44Benitez.
01:18:45Armando Benitez is in right field.
01:18:48He threw the ball.
01:18:50He threw the pitch.
01:18:54That's a great call.
01:18:56He had to go sing for himself.
01:18:58Hey, each weekday through September 4th, Major League Baseball will be releasing a new top 10 list.
01:19:04Go to MLB.com and MLB's YouTube page for all the lists plus the ability to make your own.
01:19:15With Geico Ballpark, Cam takes us to Toronto, which was the site of our number one fan moment.
01:19:21And those same two teams are back at it.
01:19:24It's the Yankees and the Blue Jays.
01:19:26The Blue Jays, with the season they've had, and they're just two back of a wild card spot.
01:19:31That's a game that many of you can see on Apple TV.
01:19:357.15 Eastern Time in beautiful Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
01:19:40More Central on the other side.
01:19:55Coming up at the top of the hour, it is MLB Now with Brian Kenney.
01:20:00They're going to discuss Paul Skeen's current struggles, plus Marlins pitching coach Daniel Moskos will join the show.
01:20:06That's top of the hour right here on MLB Network.
01:20:09Time now to look back at some of the best Capital One walk-offs from the week that was.
01:20:19And now Derek Hill, swing and a ground ball, pass the diving, he bent into the Phillies and the Phillies
01:20:24have won it again.
01:20:25Derek Hill is the hero again.
01:20:29He's hit.
01:20:30Here comes Terang.
01:20:32Here comes a throw.
01:20:34Terang.
01:20:35He's safe.
01:20:36He's safe.
01:20:37And the Brewers win.
01:20:38Can he provide a sequel on Tuesday?
01:20:41Ersek to Muncy.
01:20:43That's going to end the night.
01:20:45Max Muncy wins it for the Dodgers in the 10th.
01:20:49Can't be set on the right field.
01:20:51Base head.
01:20:52A good song.
01:20:53Laura's throw will be...
01:20:56Lee Morris.
01:20:58Hook it up.
01:21:02Some great moments there.
01:21:04A reminder, Capital One is donating $1,000 to the Jackie Robinson Foundation for every walk-off this season.
01:21:14Geico Ballpark Cam takes us to...
01:21:16Where are we at again?
01:21:18Pittsburgh.
01:21:18Yeah.
01:21:20That is a game many of you will see right here on the network.
01:21:236.30 Eastern in Pittsburgh.
01:21:26It's the Red Sox who got a very big win yesterday.
01:21:28Thanks to Peyton Toley in Toronto against the Blue Jays.
01:21:32Braxton Ashcraft with a complete game yesterday against the Marlins.
01:21:35Red Sox Pirates.
01:21:376.30 Eastern right here on the network.
01:21:39We'll be back with a few more...
01:21:41A little bit of a show left and back to walk it off.
01:21:43Stay with us.
01:21:46Lips, generous and warm.
01:21:50You build me up.
01:21:52Brock Bet time.
01:21:53Odds and Trends presented by FanDuel.
01:21:57Braves, Diamondbacks beginning a series tonight.
01:22:00Drake Baldwin, D. Roach will record at least two total bases.
01:22:02Facing Brandon Fott.
01:22:04Good lifetime numbers.
01:22:055 for 8 with a homer against Fott.
01:22:08I'll take Baldwin, but I take him reluctantly as good as he is.
01:22:12Brandon Fott's on a heater.
01:22:13Really well.
01:22:15Big time.
01:22:15Ever since he came back from the minors, he's been excellent.
01:22:19Good thinking, though.
01:22:20Our top story.
01:22:21One double in the corner.
01:22:22Our top story in Houston.
01:22:25Mariners, Astros, who do you got on the money line?
01:22:29Hey, give me the Mariners just to get the party started.
01:22:33I know you're going Houston.
01:22:34I'll let you ride on the money line of Houston.
01:22:36Okay.
01:22:37George Kirby, Peter Lambert,
01:22:39who has been the Astros' most consistent pitcher all season.
01:22:43That is your pitching matchup.
01:22:45Mariners 7-1 against the Astros this season.
01:22:49Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who gets the start for the Dodgers tonight.
01:22:52D. Roach over under 18 and a half outs.
01:22:56Yeah, I don't think Dave Roberts is happy with a lot of what's going on in his bullpen right now.
01:23:01He's going to ride Yamamoto.
01:23:0510 starts of 19 outs or more for Yamamoto.
01:23:09Guys, FanDuel is inviting you to call your shot with Daily Dinger.
01:23:13Make your free pick on who's hitting a home run in their game.
01:23:15If you're right, you get a profit boost the next day.
01:23:17Play your game on FanDuel.
01:23:18It's the home of home runs.
01:23:19Lay out.
01:23:21We're like every other morning show.
01:23:23We're trying to do clicks.
01:23:24Zero got a new suit.
01:23:25Money is no object.
01:23:26Excuse me, Casanova.
01:23:28The ability for him to kind of sit on this backside, he does a fantastic job of it.
01:23:34A freaking sewer rat.
01:23:36Subway rat runs over my feet.
01:23:38I was like, we're in the big leagues?
01:23:40I was like, this looks like a prison.
01:23:41There was bad things in that place.
01:23:42What?
01:23:43Get out of here.
01:23:44Is that AI?
01:23:45When you are 6'6 and you've got 240 pounds of mass moving there, you've got to be careful
01:23:50that you don't get out of this back hit.
01:23:52The road trip from Chicago to Iowa is probably going to break us.
01:23:55I don't like this one already.
01:23:56What if I drive?
01:23:57No, that is not.
01:23:59No.
01:23:59But it's MLB Central for the next two days here at the Field of Dreams set in Dyersville, Iowa.
01:24:04I felt like when I walked into this stadium, it's like you take a gigantic deep breath.
01:24:09The great gift this game gives you is the relationship.
01:24:12You never stop learning this game.
01:24:14What a great time to start right now when you have these coaches right behind you.
01:24:17Do I look like I do anything good for me?
01:24:19I know about Texas barbecues.
01:24:21I'm known for, that's the barbecue guy.
01:24:23No, I play Major League Baseball.
01:24:25Who's into the milking and the dairy work?
01:24:27I think everyone is into the milking.
01:24:29We've got the Minnesota Juicy Lucy.
01:24:31It's an explosion of flavors.
01:24:32I'll be driving by myself, and there might be some explosions.
01:24:36Shout out to the squeegee guy.
01:24:38Unfortunately, he did not get this window, which you would think.
01:24:41Oh, he's coming back.
01:24:42He's coming back.
01:24:43All right.
01:24:44Let's everyone relax.
01:24:45There he is.
01:24:46There we go.
01:24:46Guys.
01:24:47Awesome.
01:24:51I like that we held the microphone out to a window.
01:24:54Hey, let's walk it off.
01:24:56Dero, you've got something.
01:24:58Yeah, real quick.
01:24:59I mean, Peyton Tolley.
01:25:01Tell me he's not Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation, a.k.a.
01:25:04Yeah.
01:25:06Yeah.
01:25:06Are you kidding me?
01:25:07That's great.
01:25:08Nick Offerman.
01:25:09I don't think Nick's got a 97-mile-an-hour fastball.
01:25:12He does not, and he's certainly not pitching like Peyton Tolley as well.
01:25:15Robert, real quick.
01:25:17Yeah.
01:25:17Maybe John Camos for you plays you in a movie?
01:25:20People would probably object vigorously with that, but one thing you could not object to
01:25:26is that the Iron Man streak continues, Dero.
01:25:29We are currently at 321 consecutive shows.
01:25:34The streak continues.
01:25:36I'll be back Monday.
01:25:38Dero's back in studio as well as Lauren, so I hope everyone has a great weekend.
01:25:44You too, Dero.
01:25:45Good to see you, buddy.
01:25:45Good.
01:25:46Good to see you.
01:25:47Enjoy the weekend.
01:25:49We'll see you on Monday, guys.
