00:00:01Happy Wednesday to you. A lot to get to, but first, our wedding.
00:00:04Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today.
00:00:06This looks like the weirdest wedding cake ever.
00:00:11I'm walking away, I'm a runaway bride.
00:00:13We've got a lot coming on the show.
00:00:14John Heyman is going to join us.
00:00:16He's going to talk about Tarek Sobel,
00:00:18that if the Tigers decide to pull the trigger on a trade,
00:00:20who are the potential suitors?
00:00:22You know the list of usual suspects, but there's one surprise team.
00:00:27Jose Ramirez got it going last night.
00:00:29We've got the latest on Aaron Judge,
00:00:31and Preacher Sean Casey is also joining the show.
00:00:34Let's get this wedding started.
00:00:53Ready or not, MLB Central, presented by Home Depot.
00:00:57If we were married, Robert Flores, Sean Casey,
00:01:00if we were married, what would drive you the most nuts about me?
00:01:03We don't have time.
00:01:04No, you'll see that.
00:01:06Good morning.
00:01:07Wait, are you saying all three of us are married?
00:01:10No.
00:01:10No, just you.
00:01:12I know some social norms have been relaxed.
00:01:15We would not last a minute.
00:01:17It would be over.
00:01:18Whenever you say, hey, do you want to go pick strawberries or make homemade jam,
00:01:22I would start packing my bags immediately.
00:01:25I don't know why it bothers him so much.
00:01:27She actually just said that right before we...
00:01:28He doesn't like when I make pie or cake.
00:01:31I mean, no, you can make it, but we don't have to go pick the ingredients.
00:01:34It's farm to table.
00:01:37Go to a store like normal people.
00:01:39I did not make my Schmuntier Airlines flight last night.
00:01:43Oh, you did?
00:01:43Yeah.
00:01:43What happened?
00:01:45You know Atlanta Airport happened.
00:01:46Yeah.
00:01:46So I just went straight up.
00:01:48Did the game end too late?
00:01:49No, it wasn't bad at the Phillies Padres.
00:01:51So you haven't slept, though.
00:01:52Have you not slept?
00:01:52I have not.
00:01:53I'm so glad you asked.
00:01:54It looks like you slept.
00:01:56You're doing good.
00:01:56It's a lot of makeup.
00:01:58Robert had an unfortunate...
00:02:00Okay, so he texted me yesterday, Case.
00:02:01Yes, and I thought that the text was maybe...
00:02:04Made up?
00:02:05No, I wish it was.
00:02:06You ready?
00:02:06Pop a lunch.
00:02:07Okay.
00:02:08Okay, so I have, in the years past, people that have watched the show have known that
00:02:12I have had some unusual things happen in my house as it relates to home repair or various
00:02:19items that have been delivered.
00:02:20Remember a few years ago, I had home patio furniture delivered, and there was a box of
00:02:25you know what inside the box?
00:02:27Well, yesterday, I had a handyman come to the house, fixing various items around my house.
00:02:34I'm not the handiest.
00:02:35Right, right.
00:02:36But you have enough money to pay.
00:02:37Correct.
00:02:38Correct.
00:02:38He does quality work.
00:02:40However, he left something behind, and it wasn't a tool belt.
00:02:49It was the worst housewarming gift you could imagine in my upstairs bathroom.
00:02:57You chop the kids off at the pool?
00:03:00I don't even...
00:03:01How does this always happen to you?
00:03:03This has happened three times.
00:03:04Agreed.
00:03:05Agreed.
00:03:05But part of me, while I was furious, another part of me is amazed that he could perform on
00:03:13the road like that.
00:03:17Did you call him?
00:03:18Did you get his number to say, hey, man?
00:03:20What am I going to do?
00:03:21Did you text a picture of it?
00:03:22What are you going to say?
00:03:23What are we doing?
00:03:23I just don't...
00:03:26You can't go down to Dunkin' Donuts down the street?
00:03:27But like I'm saying, like, look...
00:03:30Chocolate frosting real nice.
00:03:32And, you know, my wife called, text goes, was this you?
00:03:37And I said, I said, no, I had a home game earlier today, and my home game is upstairs in
00:03:45my
00:03:45bathroom.
00:03:46People are having their oatmeal.
00:03:49Honestly, when things happen, that's the third time now you're the problem.
00:03:53You'll have to look inward, Robert.
00:03:55Apparently.
00:03:55Apparently.
00:03:56You want to wake it up, America?
00:03:58Yeah, yeah.
00:03:58He was looking inward.
00:03:59That's for darn sure.
00:04:00Let's go to the Bronx, because the Guardians were in town on a very important day on the
00:04:05baseball calendar yesterday.
00:04:07Celebrated Lou Gehrig Day.
00:04:09The league honored the Iron Horse as it spread awareness for ALS.
00:04:13And the captain, the Yankees, would be without Aaron Judge for the first time this year, dealing
00:04:17with shoulder soreness.
00:04:18We will keep you posted.
00:04:20As to his progress, we'll tell you more later on in the show.
00:04:24Bottom of the third, Paul Goldschmidt.
00:04:25He was pitched all over the plate, up, down, away, like the sixth.
00:04:29He's quietly having a really nice year.
00:04:31Really nice year.
00:04:32We'll see what he saw.
00:04:33We'll play, baby.
00:04:34Kyle Manzardo, the what?
00:04:35Manzardo, the guard.
00:04:36That's right.
00:04:37First pitch he saw.
00:04:38Time of the fourth, two-run shot to right field.
00:04:40That's a 9-iron.
00:04:41His Guardians can jump in front in a hurry.
00:04:46Jump back in front, three to two.
00:04:48Base is loaded.
00:04:49But Paul, again, bottom of the fourth in his 16th Major League season, getting it done.
00:04:54This was for the lead.
00:04:55Two-run single into right field, and the Yankees back in front, four to three.
00:05:01Now, a lot of conversation about Jose Ramirez and how he's been squaring up the ball without
00:05:07a lot to show for it.
00:05:08Robert, you and I were talking about that before the show.
00:05:11Yeah, tough luck in the month of May, but, hey, he's starting off June nicely.
00:05:15About how he managed the zone well.
00:05:17Where was that?
00:05:18Down the line.
00:05:19Top of the fifth to retake the lead.
00:05:20Cam Schlittler leads the game, allowing five runs.
00:05:24And then Jose had his fingerprints all over this game, top of the seventh.
00:05:29He is the engine that drives this offense.
00:05:32Cleveland leads it 6-4.
00:05:34And then in the top of the eighth, Camilo Duval.
00:05:37Face is loaded.
00:05:38And two outs.
00:05:40Travis Pazana, face is clearing double.
00:05:42Right field extends the lead 9-4.
00:05:45And that would be your final Guardians over the Yankees in the Bronx on Tuesday night.
00:05:50All right, let's go to Seattle for the Mets and the Mariners.
00:05:53Mariners' hottest team in baseball.
00:05:54Third inning.
00:05:56Mets are down 2-0.
00:05:58Carson Binge.
00:06:00Binge worthy.
00:06:02That is a two-run homer.
00:06:04And he ties it at two.
00:06:08But jump ahead to the fifth.
00:06:09It's 4-2 Seattle.
00:06:12Got a couple of men on.
00:06:14Johnny Barreira.
00:06:16Do it for Johnny, man.
00:06:17Do it for Johnny.
00:06:19That's a three-run homer.
00:06:21Mariners extend 7-2.
00:06:23Turn on it.
00:06:23They have hit 21 home runs over this current streak.
00:06:28Sixth inning.
00:06:29Binge again.
00:06:31Hey, Sean, we talked about this.
00:06:32This Mets youth movement infusing some energy.
00:06:36Yeah, Carson Binge is going to be a really good player.
00:06:39First multi-homer game.
00:06:40A.J. Ewing coming up there.
00:06:41They have some pieces, Roe Flo.
00:06:43But, J-Rod.
00:06:44Julio Rodriguez hit 10 home runs in the month of May.
00:06:48And he continues that in the month of June.
00:06:51The Mariners are hitting 293 as a team over this current 8-game winning streak.
00:06:57And they beat the Mets again 8-3.
00:07:01Take a look here at the numbers during this 8-game run for the Seattle Mariners.
00:07:06293 as a team, as I mentioned.
00:07:08The 21 homers, but the ERA, and that is the separator for this team, is that their rotation
00:07:15is so nasty.
00:07:17Under 2 as a collective ERA.
00:07:20But, I mean, this is why we said the Seattle Mariners have the potential to make a deep run
00:07:24and maybe even go to the World Series.
00:07:25Yeah, they start off cold and we're like, wondering what's happening here.
00:07:28And all of a sudden, like, oh, wait.
00:07:29They have really good pitching.
00:07:30Yep.
00:07:30Over this 8-game streak, it's been pretty lights out all across the board.
00:07:34The bullpen's been really good.
00:07:35The rotation's been really good.
00:07:37And, you know, they're finding a way to score runs.
00:07:39I think that's a big thing, too.
00:07:40I think one of the X factors with these guys, obviously, Cole Young, nice walk off the other
00:07:44night.
00:07:44But Julio Rodriguez, in the last couple years, has gone off to some of the coldest starts.
00:07:49Right?
00:07:50And he's off to probably his hottest start so far, really kind of getting things going.
00:07:54Cal Raleigh's been down.
00:07:55But this team's good.
00:07:56And also, the emergence of Luke Raley.
00:07:58Luke Raley has really, really been a big factor.
00:08:01Yeah, him and J-Rod are tied for the most home runs on the team.
00:08:04They still don't have Cal Raleigh.
00:08:05He, you know, is hurt.
00:08:07But 21 home runs over that 8-game winning streak.
00:08:09But I feel like that's what makes him more impressive.
00:08:11If you looked at the scoring from last night, it was Patrick Wisdom.
00:08:14It was Johnny Pareda in for Cal, which makes this stretch even more important and impressive.
00:08:20Because it's not the usual, guys.
00:08:22If we're looking at the hierarchy in the American League, where does Seattle fall?
00:08:27Where do the Cleveland Guardians fall?
00:08:29Right now, best records in the American League.
00:08:31By the numbers, it looks like this.
00:08:33What do your eyes tell you?
00:08:34Wow.
00:08:35Well, you know what?
00:08:36The White Sox, I'd like to see if they can keep that going.
00:08:39I think they've played some really great baseball to be three games above .500.
00:08:42I think the Mariners are even better than what they are right now with that 8-game movement.
00:08:46Now, the Guardians are interesting because 35-27, and you really, you know, you get under the hood.
00:08:53You're like, what are they doing great?
00:08:54And you're like, man, they're okay in a lot of different categories.
00:08:58And if you look at that, maybe they're even better than we think.
00:09:01At 35-27, their star players, Ramirez and Quan, really haven't gotten going yet.
00:09:06I know Ramirez had three doubles last night and kind of got it going.
00:09:09But when he gets hot, it's going to be something else.
00:09:11But Travis Bazzana coming up, this guy's legit.
00:09:14It's really been the secondary guys that have really kind of done it.
00:09:17Manzardo hit one out last night.
00:09:18De Lauder's been really good in that lineup.
00:09:21But this is just a really good team.
00:09:23The bullpen last night, if you go look, they had shut down baseball.
00:09:27So I think the Guardians are good, and they might even be better than 35-27.
00:09:32Freddie Peralta, George Kirby, that is your pitching matchup a little bit later this afternoon in Seattle.
00:09:36By the way, speaking of the Yankees, we will be at Yankee Stadium.
00:09:40We're going on a field trip.
00:09:41This time tomorrow.
00:09:41Are you coming, Keith?
00:09:42No, but I'm going to be watching you guys.
00:09:43Okay.
00:09:44Go take care of business.
00:09:45Go take care of business.
00:09:46Okay, let's go.
00:09:47We'll be married by then and fighting on our way to tomorrow.
00:09:50Let's go to Arizona for the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks.
00:09:53Freddie Freeman loves hitting in this yard.
00:09:56Third inning.
00:09:58Nope, that's not Freddie Freeman.
00:10:00No, but Shohei.
00:10:00That's Shohei Ohton.
00:10:02He's pitching tonight.
00:10:03Yes, he is.
00:10:03Right now, he likes hitting anywhere, Roflow.
00:10:05And all he did was hit a triple.
00:10:07There's Freddie Freeman.
00:10:09RBI ground out.
00:10:12What?
00:10:13That's a great.
00:10:14This is yesterday's highlight that I'm looking at.
00:10:17Okay.
00:10:17That's the shot.
00:10:18That's okay.
00:10:18Yesterday's highlight.
00:10:19Well, Michael Soroka tried to sneak.
00:10:21He did.
00:10:21Freddie.
00:10:22Fire a rat.
00:10:22Freddie said, nope.
00:10:23And did you know he tried to pick him off?
00:10:25And Freddie's like, excuse me?
00:10:27What did you just say?
00:10:29Yeah, here's a Shohei Ohtoni triple off Mike Soroka.
00:10:34By the way, Freddie Freeman, three hits.
00:10:37It's his first three-hit game since the third game of the season.
00:10:42Move to the third.
00:10:44Here's Corbin Carroll.
00:10:46You know, this is interesting.
00:10:47Corbin Carroll, broken handmaid bone.
00:10:49And if you looked at the first couple of months, he was swinging two-handed.
00:10:53Now he's back to that one-handed finish, which makes him so powerful.
00:10:56So I'm paying attention because my son has a broken handmaid bone right now.
00:10:59And also, he is doing very well against left-handed pitching this year.
00:11:03Yes, yes.
00:11:03In the meantime, Mookie Betts gets one through.
00:11:06Dodgers go on to win 6-5 over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
00:11:11Up next, let's go to the Goodland case.
00:11:13Grab some cheese and beer.
00:11:15Oh, yeah.
00:11:15You can get down with that, right?
00:11:17Oh, I'm down.
00:11:17Kyle Harrison on the mound facing Rafael Devers.
00:11:20A little extra juice in this matchup.
00:11:21They were traded for each other last June.
00:11:24And Devers strikes out looking.
00:11:26Harrison wins the first battle.
00:11:27That was the first of many wins for Kyle Harrison.
00:11:30He had a night.
00:11:32Dero broke down Jake Bowers and how he's such an important.
00:11:36Part of that offensive three-run shot to center field.
00:11:39The Brewers.
00:11:40The way he's growing offensively, too, man.
00:11:41He's doing great.
00:11:42Harrison back out there facing Devers again with nobody out.
00:11:46Harrison's story is wild.
00:11:48Never really found a home and has seemingly found a home in Milwaukee.
00:11:5313 swing and misses off his fastball.
00:11:55Think about that.
00:11:57And that's what Murph talks about.
00:11:58The fastball changes the game.
00:12:00He's said that quote after the game so many times.
00:12:02It's Willie Adamas and the Giants trail by two.
00:12:05Bryce Durang, one man on and two outs, bottom of the eighth.
00:12:12Brewers scored all their runs with two outs.
00:12:14And look at what the Brewers are working with.
00:12:20Yeah.
00:12:21You know, I think just a lot of intent behind those heaters tonight.
00:12:25And, you know, Will did a great job staying with me and calling the game.
00:12:29And it was just attack, attack.
00:12:31Boys got me an early lead.
00:12:33But, I mean, all we want to do is win ballgames.
00:12:35And that's just my job to go out there, put up as many zeros as I can.
00:12:39And I'm having so much fun.
00:12:40It's a great place to be.
00:12:41And I'm so excited to just keep it going.
00:12:44And thank you all the fans, man.
00:12:46We appreciate you.
00:12:46And it's been a really cool time here.
00:12:49And let's keep going.
00:12:51I wonder if a friend of the program, Sophia Minnert, has thoughts on the echoing, the interview going to the
00:12:57house.
00:12:58She's fantastic at her job.
00:12:59And it's more difficult than you would think.
00:13:01Yeah.
00:13:01Because it reverbs back in the air.
00:13:02It's very difficult.
00:13:04We know pitching wins in October.
00:13:06A case.
00:13:06Feast your eyes on this.
00:13:08Complete domination.
00:13:09This is why when you were asked the other day on MLB Network, do the brewers have it all?
00:13:13You said without hesitation, heck yeah.
00:13:16Yeah.
00:13:16And this is why.
00:13:17This is it.
00:13:17This is it right here.
00:13:18The bottom line is, in this industry, you win with horses at the top of the rotation.
00:13:23You want to talk about two Clydesdales right here.
00:13:25These guys are absolute horses.
00:13:27And, you know, you look at Kyle Harrison, what he's done, you know, it's been really impressive.
00:13:33One thing, when you look at Miz and you look at Kyle Harrison, and then you look at the brewers,
00:13:36and you say, man, what is it about?
00:13:38What are the brewers saying to these guys?
00:13:40What do you think it is?
00:13:41Well, you know what?
00:13:42Their analytics department's great, and they're breaking it down.
00:13:45A couple things they've done, but one of the big things they've done, first pitch strikes.
00:13:49When you look at Kyle Harrison, you look at Miz, they're two of the best in the business at first
00:13:54pitch strikes.
00:13:54And look at this, the largest increase in first pitch strikes, 2025-2026.
00:13:59The Miz and Harrison are two on the tops of this list.
00:14:04So you're seeing some of the best pitchers in the game are throwing first pitch strikes to then get to
00:14:09their secondary pitches.
00:14:10And you look at Kyle Harrison, it's just impressive, man.
00:14:13He's like, okay, let me get to strike one so that I can get to my other pitches.
00:14:17He can get to his curveball.
00:14:18He can get to his changeup.
00:14:19This guy is one of the best fastballs in the game.
00:14:22It's almost like an upshoot fastball.
00:14:24And he just says, you know what, let me get on top.
00:14:27I think you have to give a lot of credit to the Brewers and their philosophy of looking at different
00:14:32guys and going,
00:14:33okay, we've got to trade for a guy like Kyle Harrison because we can make him better.
00:14:37And, hey, you know, I hate to harp on it, but, you know, this is another miss by the Red
00:14:42Sox.
00:14:42Breslow getting rid of this guy.
00:14:43This guy is 24 years old, and he's not a secret.
00:14:46This guy was a top prospect in the game, so kind of gave up on his development.
00:14:50But you look right here, highest whiff rate on a four-seam fastball.
00:14:53Listen, look at it right here, guys.
00:14:56This guy isn't throwing 99, you know, 98 miles an hour.
00:14:59He's averaging 95, which is still good.
00:15:01But in this day and age, it's not the tops of the list.
00:15:04And I think the biggest reason has been is, you know, dropping down a little bit and shooting an upshoot
00:15:09fastball.
00:15:10But, listen, he's said it before.
00:15:12A lot of intentions of some of the fastballs when he came at Devers last yesterday,
00:15:15punched him out on three different occasions, and he came right at him.
00:15:19Watch the wipeout slider, 2-2, and then he comes back.
00:15:22Heater, and another one right here.
00:15:25Heater up, and then he paints one to wipe him out down here.
00:15:28Bam, there he goes, strike three.
00:15:30So, Harrison loves the fastball.
00:15:32And I want to go back to this again.
00:15:35Another fastball to Devers.
00:15:37There's that, like, slurve, they call it, slider slurve.
00:15:39But then he's, man, nasty pitch right here.
00:15:42ABS challenge, great challenge by Contreras right there.
00:15:46Another fastball up.
00:15:48Another fastball away.
00:15:50I mean, he just gave Devers a steady diet of heaters all day long.
00:15:54But it was paint, paint, paint.
00:15:56Come right at him and let it work for you.
00:15:58And he did.
00:15:59Look at that.
00:15:59He was going down, down and away, upshoot.
00:16:02It's just the deception of the fastball, I think, is what has been most impressive by Kyle Harrison.
00:16:09And I think this is a big reason why, guys.
00:16:11Look at the arm angle, and look at where he is on the rubber.
00:16:14They moved him over to the first base side.
00:16:16The arm angle's up higher.
00:16:18And what that does, it creates major deception for that hitter.
00:16:21When you face a guy like this, you're like, it comes out.
00:16:24And when it comes out, it's almost like a three-quarters, but it's up a little bit.
00:16:28So it comes in like an upshoot fastball, like a great vertical break.
00:16:33And then it makes his, they call it a slurve, like a slider curve.
00:16:38And the kick chains that he started throwing, it takes those pitches to another level.
00:16:42And I think that's why we're seeing Kyle Harrison have a 1-5-7 ERA.
00:16:47And we're in June, guys.
00:16:48Pat Murphy said that he thought Harrison was a little amped up in that first inning.
00:16:53That he talked to him after the first.
00:16:54He talked to him after the first.
00:16:55He said, hey, I know this is a team that gave you a shot, but, you know, let's keep it
00:16:59all in perspective.
00:17:00And he was excellent.
00:17:01And yesterday, or this is roughly, I mean, it has been an unbelievable calendar year from this time, 2026 to
00:17:102025 for Kyle Harrison.
00:17:12He was traded twice, basically within the same calendar year.
00:17:16And then this is the second one in that calendar year.
00:17:20It happened on February.
00:17:23Harrison, Johan, and David Hamilton.
00:17:25All three of these guys are on their big league squad, the Brewers, and making significant contributions.
00:17:32Johan's got a 2-8-7 ERA.
00:17:34He's nasty from the left side.
00:17:35So, you know, it is difficult to judge trades, you know, right away.
00:17:41We don't need, you know, you need to let it breathe sometimes.
00:17:43But right now, when you're looking at what Kyle Harrison is doing, oof.
00:17:47We had him on the program last week.
00:17:49Yeah.
00:17:49And we said, how'd you get here?
00:17:51And he kind of just paused and he said, belief in self.
00:17:54Because it's been a windy road to get to this point.
00:17:56And here.
00:17:57Brewers and Giants continue that series this evening in Milwaukee.
00:18:00Logan Webb will get the start for the Giants.
00:18:02The Brewers have yet to name a starter as of this morning.
00:18:05All right.
00:18:06Let's take a quick timeout.
00:18:06When we come back, or first, we want to tell you about our showcase game tonight.
00:18:11Dodgers and D-backs.
00:18:12That comes your way 930 Eastern.
00:18:14Right here on the network.
00:18:15Shohei Otani gets the start for the Dodgers.
00:18:19He had a triple.
00:18:20You know.
00:18:21And then tomorrow, MLB Central on the road, live from Yankee Stadium.
00:18:2710 a.m. Eastern, right here on the network, getting you set for the Guardians and Yankees
00:18:33game tomorrow afternoon at Yankee Stadium at 1.30.
00:18:38All right.
00:18:39Top of the order.
00:18:40Up next, with Tarek Skubal's return just days away, who are the potential suitors for
00:18:46the Cy Young Award winner if Detroit decides to trade him?
00:18:51John Heyman has the details and the list of teams.
00:18:54And later, how appropriate that on Lou Gehrig's day, baseball's current Ironman goes deep.
00:19:01How Matt Olsen kept the red-hot Braves past the Blue Jays in Atlanta.
00:19:07And later, we already showed you the Brewers highlights, and they're currently leading the
00:19:11Central.
00:19:11But who else do you trust in this division besides Milwaukee?
00:19:16And which teams will be around at the end of the season?
00:19:20It's all ahead on a jam-packed MLB Central.
00:19:23Our viewers on Twitter say maybe your house is the problem.
00:19:27That's their conclusion.
00:19:29That it's too inviting?
00:19:31Yeah.
00:19:32And people feel that they could just take the Browns to the Super Bowl whenever they feel
00:19:37like it?
00:19:37Maybe it's you, honey.
00:19:50And welcome back to MLB Central.
00:19:53We are presented by Home Depot.
00:19:55Tarek Skubal working his way back through a sim game on Monday in an effort to ramp up.
00:20:01And he looked exactly how you would expect.
00:20:04Exactly how Tarek looks.
00:20:06Through 64 pitches, 45 for strikes.
00:20:09He's on the fast track to recovery after removing loose bodies from that elbow.
00:20:13And John Heyman manning the inside corner with the very latest.
00:20:17Good morning to you.
00:20:17We've talked so much lately about the situation in Detroit not being where they've wanted
00:20:22to be.
00:20:23Of course, every team would jump at the chance to have him.
00:20:25What are the conversations right now, beginning of June, about trading Tarek Skubal?
00:20:30Where do we stand?
00:20:30Yeah.
00:20:31I mean, a lot of people are thinking about it.
00:20:33Certainly.
00:20:33I think the chances are excellent that he is traded.
00:20:37Right now, they got out of last place.
00:20:39Did he beat Tampa twice?
00:20:40They are still 24 and 38.
00:20:42I think the likelihood is very, very high.
00:20:45I would say 90%.
00:20:47If he looks anything close to Tarek Skubal, and we just saw that 65 pitches look really
00:20:52good there in that sim game, he will be traded.
00:20:56He is going to go out on a rehab start.
00:20:58I believe will be the next time he throws, and likely Sunday, and they do expect him
00:21:05back at this point.
00:21:06The timetable is two more weeks, which would mean six weeks from surgery, which is pretty
00:21:11good for nanoscopes, Skubal scope, whatever you want to call it.
00:21:14Kind of a new surgery, but things are looking very good for chances for a trade.
00:21:20And there's so much time until the deadline, and we were just watching that sim game.
00:21:24He looks, eye test, close to 100%.
00:21:27Okay, so teams in need.
00:21:29I have a list.
00:21:29I'd love to go through them.
00:21:30If I can, pick your brain.
00:21:32At the top of the list, Cubs.
00:21:33And I feel like that seems to be number one, because I feel like they felt like and seemed
00:21:38like they were a starter away two injuries ago.
00:21:41Yes?
00:21:42Yeah, obviously, Horton is out for the year.
00:21:44Boyd is on the IL.
00:21:45Cabrera's out as well.
00:21:47So they've got guys filling in.
00:21:49Ray's done a solid job filling in.
00:21:51Brown's done a good job filling in, but they are not winning right now.
00:21:55Hitting's been an issue for them lately, but to me, this is something that has a decent
00:22:03chance to happen.
00:22:04There is a link there.
00:22:05Scott Harris, who runs the Detroit organization, was a longtime Cub working with Jed Hoyer.
00:22:11And that sometimes is how you guess where someone might get traded.
00:22:16So, to me, the Cubs are a team that really does fit for Tarek Skubal.
00:22:21And that would be the team you would circle in the National League Central.
00:22:24In the National League West, there are a few.
00:22:26I watched Randy Vasquez pitch well for the Padres last night against the Phillies.
00:22:30Sure, they would love to put Tarek Skubal at the front end of their rotation.
00:22:33And then the Dodgers, is that there?
00:22:35I mean, when I say pressing need, that sounds like a ridiculous statement.
00:22:41But is that on the table for them?
00:22:43Is that front and center?
00:22:44Yeah, I mean, people aren't going to want to hear that it's the Dodgers.
00:22:46Certainly got a possibility.
00:22:48They have been aggressive at deadlines.
00:22:50It has paid off for them.
00:22:51Obviously, a two-time defense champion.
00:22:53He's the two-time defending Cy Young champion.
00:22:56So there is a potential fit there.
00:22:59Obviously, they've got guys that are out.
00:23:00Snell and Glass now out right now.
00:23:02They do expect them back, but certainly the Dodgers could do it.
00:23:07They have the highest payroll ever.
00:23:09There is some more money involved with this.
00:23:11He's obviously won his arbitration case, so he's making $30 million plus.
00:23:15But if he's traded close to the deadline, it would be one-third of that.
00:23:19So, I mean, the Dodgers don't really worry about money,
00:23:21but I think they're definitely a possibility.
00:23:24And the Padres, certainly, they've got guys who've been out.
00:23:27Pavetta, let's not forget about him.
00:23:28He was terrific last year.
00:23:30He is still out.
00:23:31But Darvish, we're not expecting him back.
00:23:34And, of course, you've got Musgrove out as well.
00:23:36They've been piecing it together with a great bullpen.
00:23:39Hitting is their number one issue.
00:23:41But as we know, the Padres are a very aggressive team.
00:23:44So you can never rule them out for trades.
00:23:47They don't have the prospects that the Dodgers do.
00:23:50A few teams do.
00:23:51But somehow, A.J. Pillar figures it out.
00:23:53As long as we're talking NL West, I'll throw the D-backs in there as well.
00:23:57They're clearly a team that is on the cusp of something special.
00:24:01They look very, very good right now.
00:24:03So it could be any of these contending teams, really.
00:24:06Dodgers and the Diamondbacks, six and six-and-a-half games back of the Dodgers in the National League West,
00:24:11respectively.
00:24:12I know Dave Dombrowski is always working.
00:24:14I also know that Wheeler, Sanchez, the way Nola pitched last night, and Jesus Lozardo.
00:24:19Is that at the forefront?
00:24:21Is pitching at the front of their minds in Philadelphia?
00:24:24No.
00:24:24I mean, their biggest need is a right-handed bat.
00:24:26Obviously, Schwarber and Harper have been fantastic.
00:24:29But they need some right-handed hitting.
00:24:31Their right-handed hitters have underachieved to this point.
00:24:35That is their clear need.
00:24:36But as you mentioned right at the start, Dave Dombrowski, very aggressive.
00:24:39He's not going to let any opportunity fly by.
00:24:43Hey, Painter, I think, is going to be a terrific pitcher in time.
00:24:46He has not been that guy to this point.
00:24:49And you never know what could happen with pitchers.
00:24:52So I'm throwing the Phillies in my top five mix here.
00:24:56They aren't the ones with the big need.
00:24:58But you obviously get Scoobull.
00:25:00You combine him with Sanchez and Wheeler.
00:25:01That's a very formidable rotation, no matter what your offense is doing.
00:25:05I see the Rays on this list.
00:25:07Yeah.
00:25:07Is that real?
00:25:09Possibly.
00:25:10I hear they sneak to Peek.
00:25:11No surprise.
00:25:12He was throwing the old simulation game in their ballpark.
00:25:16They're allowed.
00:25:17They're allowed to watch.
00:25:19And, you know, look, they've tried to do some interesting things.
00:25:22Look, they tried for Freddie Freeman.
00:25:24They looked at Soto.
00:25:26They looked at different things.
00:25:27They haven't pulled off the big one.
00:25:29But, look, right now they have the best record in the American League.
00:25:32Their pitching is very good at the top.
00:25:35Obviously, McClanahan is back.
00:25:37Nick Martinez has been fantastic as a free agent.
00:25:40Asmussen has been very good.
00:25:42Griffin Jack is still a work in progress.
00:25:45Matt's had a rough one last night.
00:25:46So, there is room there.
00:25:47And I'm not going to rule them out as a possibility.
00:25:51And, of course, there are a lot of possibilities.
00:25:53I didn't even mention the Brewers.
00:25:54You guys have talked about that great top two in the rotation now with Harrison joining the Miz.
00:25:59Imagine throwing Scooble in there as well.
00:26:01You know, they've been in the World Series.
00:26:03They haven't won the World Series yet.
00:26:04It would be interesting to see Milwaukee do it.
00:26:06They have the prospects as well.
00:26:08So, I'm going off the board.
00:26:09It's okay.
00:26:09You're allowed.
00:26:10It's your segment.
00:26:10It's my segment.
00:26:11I'm going off the board.
00:26:12I don't want to leave out the Brewers.
00:26:14Okay.
00:26:15And Nage just said in my ear that in 2023 the Rays tried for Otani.
00:26:18So, maybe.
00:26:20What did you say, Robert?
00:26:21Oh, I'm just.
00:26:22You're just digesting it all.
00:26:24Absolutely.
00:26:24He's allowed to throw the Brewers in there.
00:26:26And John thinks just because he's got a good-looking haircut.
00:26:30Yeah.
00:26:30Then he can just throw the Rays and the Brewers in there.
00:26:33He can come with all sorts of heat and fire.
00:26:35Robert, I feel so.
00:26:36Top five was the category.
00:26:38Robert, that's a terrific, terrific suit.
00:26:40I was feeling so good for you.
00:26:41And then I watched the opening segment.
00:26:43I'm still very.
00:26:45Yeah.
00:26:46It's not good.
00:26:46It's not right.
00:26:47You deserve better.
00:26:48And it's not your fault.
00:26:49No matter what anyone else on this show may say, not your fault.
00:26:52Yeah.
00:26:53The handyman left a weapon of mass destruction.
00:26:56It's unbelievable.
00:26:57All right.
00:26:58Let's go to break.
00:26:59Speaking of weapons, this cruise missile went deep in Houston, putting the Pirates well
00:27:06above their pace for home runs in a season.
00:27:09Also, Jordan went deep.
00:27:11John Casey, however, has more on O'Neal Cruz and his power stroke.
00:27:15We do have a little bit of feedback.
00:27:16This from Dale, Roflo's handyman, putting new meaning in the saying, dirty Mike and the
00:27:23boys, if you know, you know, you're 100% right, Dale.
00:27:26That's good.
00:27:27I don't know.
00:27:29I don't know.
00:27:29I don't know.
00:27:29Do you really imagine?
00:27:30Can we say we'll never say a classic slow to show with you?
00:27:37MLB Central is brought to you by Centrum.
00:27:42Yes.
00:27:43All right.
00:27:43Express train.
00:27:44Here we go.
00:27:45Pay your bets, Keith.
00:27:46By the way, the handyman told me he has started a new musical group.
00:27:50It's called floaties in the blue.
00:27:53Andres and Phillies.
00:27:55Gavin Sheets.
00:27:56Let her cry.
00:27:57Holy sheets.
00:27:58It's 10th.
00:27:59How about Bryce Harper?
00:28:00Oh, do it, Harper.
00:28:01Hey, when he's going there.
00:28:03When he goes to left center, watch out, baby.
00:28:05Watch out.
00:28:05And Nola had fastball command.
00:28:07Yes.
00:28:08He was good.
00:28:08He struck out eight.
00:28:09And by the way, this is the second consecutive start in which Aaron Nola did not walk a batter.
00:28:15That's huge.
00:28:15Alec Boehm grounds into a double play, but a run does score, so it's three to two.
00:28:20Johan Duran.
00:28:21I thought this was out.
00:28:24And then I was going to definitely miss my play.
00:28:28Just misses by a few feet later in the at-bat.
00:28:32Bogart strikes out.
00:28:33Phillies win three to two.
00:28:35The Phillies are now 22-10 under Don Mattingly.
00:28:38Blue Jays, Braves, Kaz Okamoto with his team down 2-0.
00:28:43Sounded good, is good.
00:28:45That ties the game on his 13th.
00:28:48He's got to have it up and down here.
00:28:50He's got to go.
00:28:51Move to the third.
00:28:52Ozzy Obis.
00:28:54That'll work.
00:28:55Here comes Matt Olsen.
00:28:56It's three to two Atlanta.
00:28:58It was 100 degrees on that field.
00:29:00Ed, good thing you had the T-shirt there.
00:29:03Matt Olsen.
00:29:05Well, I said he was like, go, go, go.
00:29:07Well, I said that was like a 49 degree.
00:29:09He willed it over.
00:29:10And on Lou Gehrig Day, baseball's current Iron Man comes up with a big home run.
00:29:15His 17th Braves win 4-3.
00:29:17A's, Cubs, Nick Kurtz.
00:29:19That's pretty good, huh?
00:29:20I heard the ring was blowing in, too, which is like that stuff.
00:29:23He has homered in three of his last four.
00:29:26Moved to the fourth.
00:29:28Zach Geloff.
00:29:30Remember D-Rose said it reminded him of Bob Gelbaugh?
00:29:34I have never heard of that.
00:29:35Not we are the world, but do they know it's Christmas?
00:29:40Do they know it's Christmas?
00:29:42Do they know it's Christmas?
00:29:44Gage jumped.
00:29:45First win.
00:29:46Yes.
00:29:47Seven innings.
00:29:48Five strikeouts.
00:29:49He retired the last 14 batters he faced.
00:29:52Gage hold on to win 2-1.
00:29:53Royals, Reds, Noah Cameron.
00:29:55Perfect so far.
00:29:57Facing Spencer Steer.
00:30:00Perfect no more.
00:30:02Spencer's been really good for them, guys.
00:30:04And then he did it again in the eighth case.
00:30:07Second homer of the night.
00:30:08Ooh, and then that's when you know you're going good.
00:30:10When you go left center, right center, mix it up like that,
00:30:12it moves your swings.
00:30:13Really nice.
00:30:14If you want the new ones.
00:30:15Four hits, four runs for the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.
00:30:18Will Benson.
00:30:20His third home run of the season.
00:30:22So the Reds tie it at three, so we got extra innings.
00:30:26Blake Dunn.
00:30:29That'll work.
00:30:29Here comes Spencer Steer.
00:30:31Here, Reds stunned the Royals in extra innings four to three.
00:30:35Spencer Steer is hitting .343 over his last 18 games.
00:30:39That's what happens now.
00:30:40They should.
00:30:41All right.
00:30:41All are jacked.
00:30:42Our top story.
00:30:43Pirates, Astros, Jordan Alvarez.
00:30:46Jordan has 21 home runs.
00:30:49It's aggressive.
00:30:51That went off Bubba Chandler in the Crawford boxes.
00:30:53However, despite having multiple leads, Mike Burroughs and the Astros could not hold him.
00:31:00O'Neal Cruz, his 14th home run of the season.
00:31:03Man, is he looking good.
00:31:05Yeah, he is.
00:31:05And then Brian Abreu facing Brandon Lau.
00:31:08After a long at-bat, Lau bangs one off the foul pole.
00:31:14Pirates go on to win 10-6.
00:31:17The Pirates have 71 home runs this year, putting them on a pace for 189.
00:31:23They hit .117 all of last year.
00:31:26Look at this.
00:31:27A good sample size for O'Neal Cruz.
00:31:30Last nine games.
00:31:31And I was case with the Pirates in spring.
00:31:34And it was right when Brandon Lau got there.
00:31:36And I was interviewing Brandon Lau.
00:31:37And O'Neal Cruz was working out kind of a couple feet away.
00:31:42And Brandon said, I'm telling you, if I had one half of the tools he has.
00:31:47Because I have to work so hard.
00:31:48And both are incredible players.
00:31:50It was just a matter of putting in the work and having it come together.
00:31:53And we're seeing it happen right now.
00:31:54Yeah.
00:31:54No, Shahz.
00:31:55That's the truth.
00:31:56We are seeing it happen.
00:31:57They've been waiting in Pittsburgh.
00:31:58You know, when you talk about O'Neal Cruz last year, he kind of scuffed a little bit.
00:32:01But everyone's always like, you know, what you guys were talking about.
00:32:05This guy's tool set is beyond.
00:32:07I mean, this couldn't be a superstar in this league.
00:32:10And I think now we're starting to see it in Pittsburgh and what he's doing.
00:32:14I mean, you just take a look, really, at the numbers that he's putting up this season.
00:32:18You know, it's been, you know, there it is.
00:32:21There it is right here.
00:32:21When you see, when you, first off, if you've ever been up against this guy.
00:32:25I mean, so imposing.
00:32:27So imposing.
00:32:28But the swing is, he's 6'7", 240-some pounds.
00:32:31Absolute monster.
00:32:33But he can absolutely fly.
00:32:35Hits the ball all over the place.
00:32:37I know people talk about his center field, but he's getting better.
00:32:39But look at this right here in the last three seasons.
00:32:41Talk about getting better and starting to, you know, understand your skill set.
00:32:45But look at 2026 through 59 games.
00:32:48Already 14 home runs.
00:32:50He already has 19 stolen bases.
00:32:52I mean, and his wage runs created plus at a 123.
00:32:56This guy's starting to figure it out.
00:32:57And the skill set, you know, really is pretty incredible.
00:33:01But you take a look at what he's been doing.
00:33:03And I think this is what he's been doing a little differently this season, is he's hitting the breaking balls.
00:33:09Mike, right?
00:33:09He got a slider yesterday, covered that for a three-run homer.
00:33:12But the breaking balls that he's covering this season, this is what he wasn't doing last year.
00:33:18Last year, he was an out.
00:33:19If you spun it to him last year, he was really an out.
00:33:22But this season, not the case anymore.
00:33:24Here's another changeup that kind of backs up from Tyone.
00:33:27And he skies one out there in Wrigley and gets through it.
00:33:31And another one right here, splitter outside.
00:33:33Now this is next level.
00:33:35If he can continue to do this, go into left center on breaking balls, where are you going to go
00:33:39with this guy?
00:33:40He's a real problem.
00:33:41But this might be the best one right here.
00:33:42Cease has an unbelievable slider, one of the best in the game.
00:33:46And then all of a sudden, Neil Cruz says, oh, yeah?
00:33:48How about I hit this one over the bullpen?
00:33:50That's the kind of pop I have.
00:33:51Now, I want to run this back.
00:33:52Can you run that back really quick?
00:33:53I want to show you the power and the torque that this guy gets on the baseball.
00:33:58But I want to show this area where we talk as hitters, like, are you ready to launch?
00:34:05Ready to launch.
00:34:06Is the load back?
00:34:07And you can hold that back side.
00:34:09And when you come down and that front foot hits, are you ready to launch?
00:34:12You want to talk about ready to launch?
00:34:13Roll this right here, and I'll stop it right when he gets his leg up.
00:34:18Stop it right.
00:34:19One more.
00:34:20One more click.
00:34:21Stop it right there.
00:34:22I mean, you talk about ready to launch.
00:34:24Still on your back side right here.
00:34:26This front leg kind of goes out, maybe like an Aaron Judge, sitting back.
00:34:31But look at the hands.
00:34:32Look at the head on the front shoulder.
00:34:34And run this slow if you can.
00:34:36He's wearing a short.
00:34:37Stop it right there.
00:34:38Stop it right there.
00:34:39I mean, look at this right here.
00:34:40He's into the front side.
00:34:43Backside's driving down.
00:34:45And he's really into this ground.
00:34:46Look how he gets into the ground.
00:34:48And now run it to contact if you could.
00:34:50Run it to contact.
00:34:51I mean, he comes down into it.
00:34:53Bam!
00:34:53And look at that position right there.
00:34:55This is why you're seeing a guy that's as imposing as O'Neal Cruz.
00:35:00But that swing is perfection, everybody.
00:35:03I mean, that is right on time.
00:35:05Run that.
00:35:05You can go ahead and run that through and just see how impressive it's been.
00:35:10But we're going to bring up a board right here.
00:35:11You talk about O'Neal Cruz versus non-fastball.
00:35:13You want to talk about adjustments.
00:35:15This guy's making some adjustments.
00:35:17And the biggest thing with O'Neal Cruz right now, when he's getting the pitches to hit that are up
00:35:23in the zone, that are spinning, he's not missing.
00:35:25He's doing damage.
00:35:26And it's just pretty incredible to see these numbers of where they're going.
00:35:31And, you know, listen, Donnie Kelly, the most fired up guy is the manager, Donnie Kelly, looking at what he's
00:35:36doing versus non-fastballs.
00:35:37But there's a couple other things, you know, when you talk about O'Neal Cruz and how he really, you
00:35:43know, lays into the damage that he's doing.
00:35:45But he's really so much better this year against left-handed pitching.
00:35:50You go back to an article I read.
00:35:51He hired a left-handed batting practice coach this offseason in the Dominican to throw MVP all offseason long.
00:36:01And it's paying off.
00:36:02It is paying off.
00:36:03O'Neal Cruz needs to give that guy a humongous tip because what he did in this offseason is really
00:36:08working as far as being able to stay in against lefties, drive the ball.
00:36:11That ball's middle in that he drives dead center.
00:36:14That means that front shoulder's staying in there.
00:36:17It's staying tucked.
00:36:18And how about this ball he hit?
00:36:19We looked at this a couple weeks ago.
00:36:21That's crazy.
00:36:22Off the top of the foul pole in Texas.
00:36:25Are you kidding me?
00:36:26It's like he's kicking a field goal and it went over the upright.
00:36:29Exactly.
00:36:29It's absolutely incredible.
00:36:30But look at the splits here against lefties.
00:36:33His career splits have never been really good.
00:36:35As a matter of fact, he's really been an out.
00:36:37But the adjustment, how do you hit left-handed pitching?
00:36:40You've got to face him.
00:36:40But also, you've got to work to get better at it, which he did this offseason.
00:36:44But look at these numbers right here.
00:36:45This is a humongous jump.
00:36:48That's a five-year sample size.
00:36:50And then all of a sudden, you go to 2026.
00:36:51You go, oh, man.
00:36:53This is another level.
00:36:54A 514 slug.
00:36:55He's getting on base.
00:36:57Hitting for an average.
00:36:58And the hard hit rate.
00:36:59Look at the hard hit rate and the barrel rate.
00:37:01What that shows me, guys, is a big thing for a left-handed hitter.
00:37:05As a left-handed hitter as I was, if I can learn to keep that front shoulder in as long
00:37:10as I can against the lefties, what does it make me great on two?
00:37:14Breaking balls, right?
00:37:15Because in the big leagues, these guys are great because their balls are moving the last
00:37:19three to five feet.
00:37:20Well, if I can hold this pose as long as I can, all of a sudden, I'm letting that ball
00:37:25make its last break.
00:37:26And now I'm on it.
00:37:27So you can see there's a big reason, a correlation here.
00:37:30He's hitting lefties better.
00:37:31And he's hitting breaking balls better, too.
00:37:34And listen, this is just fun right here.
00:37:37You know, O'Neal Cruz, this guy hits the ball harder and further than anybody probably in
00:37:42the game.
00:37:43I mean, are you kidding me with this right here?
00:37:44We go back.
00:37:45There's some balls that he's hit over his career.
00:37:48But watch where this one lands, Roflow, out here in Anaheim.
00:37:50I mean, this thing is up, bam, on the turf, dead center, over everything in the bushes.
00:37:56And you know what?
00:37:56This one goes out to the Monongahela River where guys out there fishing for tires, or I
00:38:03don't know what's out there in Monongahela.
00:38:05Catfish or something.
00:38:05But this ball right here, absolutely launched into the fountains, over the fountains.
00:38:13Absolutely, absolutely crushed.
00:38:14Cincinnati, this one right here.
00:38:16I mean, you want to talk about heart.
00:38:17Look at this.
00:38:18Look at that one, Lance.
00:38:19In the gap, about six throws up.
00:38:21But this one right here.
00:38:22Oh, buddy.
00:38:243-1 fastball.
00:38:25Way into the drink out there in the Monongahela River, guys.
00:38:29The three rivers out there in Pittsburgh.
00:38:30But this is a fun stat right here, right?
00:38:34Players that rank 95th percentile, hard hit, barrel percentage, bat speed.
00:38:39Look at this right here.
00:38:40Nick Kirch, James Wood, O'Neal Cruz.
00:38:42I'll tell you what, guys.
00:38:44All left-handed hitters.
00:38:45All left-handed hitters.
00:38:46And, you know, the Bucko's got a superstar out here in Pittsburgh.
00:38:51If he can keep this going, it's pretty impressive.
00:38:54And, you know, I think the last thing I want to talk about is just this guy can flat-out
00:39:01fly, too.
00:39:02So, not only can he hit, and he's doing it at a different level this year, but stolen bases.
00:39:09He's on pace for 37 home runs and 50 stolen bases this year.
00:39:14It could be around 45.
00:39:15It would be impressive.
00:39:16But, I mean, this guy can flat-out go.
00:39:19He takes about four stride shots, and he's at second base.
00:39:22And he's there.
00:39:22You know, that's what happens when you're 6'7", and the way he is.
00:39:26But look at this board, guys.
00:39:27These boards are fun.
00:39:28Most home runs in a 45-plus stolen base season.
00:39:31Bobby Bonds, Barry Bonds, my man E.D., Acuna, Alex Rodriguez, and Shohei Ohtani are the only guys.
00:39:39He's on pace for 37 home runs and 50 stolen bases.
00:39:42So, listen, they've been waiting for this to happen.
00:39:45It's like you said, Shahads.
00:39:47You know, if everyone had his ability, wow, it would be incredible to see what he can do.
00:39:51Well, O'Neal Cruz is doing it now, and it would be interesting to see if he can keep this
00:39:55going for 162.
00:39:56We'll be looking at a historic season.
00:39:58While you were nailing that skybox, I was Googling the fish you can catch if you don't want to catch
00:40:02tires, bass, walleye, and catfish.
00:40:05Yeah.
00:40:05Okay.
00:40:06All really good.
00:40:07What do you mean, yeah?
00:40:07All really good.
00:40:08Speaking of superstars, Paul Schemes tonight.
00:40:10All really good.
00:40:10Going for the Pittsburgh Pirates in Houston against the Astros.
00:40:14Spencer Arregetti, who has been excellent for Houston.
00:40:16He will get the call for the Astros.
00:40:17He like catfish?
00:40:18Let's take a quick timeout.
00:40:20When we come back, we know that Aaron Judge is hurting.
00:40:22We found out that yesterday.
00:40:24Coming up, the latest on the Yankees' captain rib injury.
00:40:27And how long could the Yankees survive without him?
00:40:32Stay with us.
00:40:38MLB.
00:40:40Welcome back to MLB Central on a Wednesday.
00:40:42We're presented by Home Depot.
00:40:46He's been, kind of the last couple weeks, kind of dealing with some shoulder soreness, just kind of more nagging.
00:40:54And then over the weekend, last couple games in Sacramento, I think became a little more than that, where I
00:41:01noticed, you know, with some swings and stuff.
00:41:03And, you know, so it became a little more than just that nagging.
00:41:06I think it was affecting him.
00:41:07So we got some imaging last night.
00:41:10We think overall good news, showing a bone bruise.
00:41:14He's going to meet with the doctor tonight.
00:41:16So hopefully it's a day-to-day situation.
00:41:18Could be a few days.
00:41:19Could be longer.
00:41:20I don't know for sure.
00:41:23John Heyman, Sean Casey, Robert Flores, Lawrence Jihadi.
00:41:25We are on our way to Yankee Stadium tomorrow as we welcome you inside.
00:41:29I feel like it's our duty to check on number 99.
00:41:32He's been playing through, you've heard Aaron Boone say it, shoulder soreness.
00:41:36They called it a bone bruise in his ribs that's nagging his shoulder.
00:41:39And it was acting up over the weekend.
00:41:41He's still hitting for power.
00:41:42I can imagine an injury like that will linger.
00:41:45What's the word out of the Bronx right now?
00:41:47Well, as Aaron Boone said, it could be a few days, could be longer.
00:41:50They are hopeful that it is only a few days.
00:41:52It takes a lot to get him out of the lineup.
00:41:54It does.
00:41:54We know it is something, and this is no scoop here.
00:41:57They are a lot better with him than without him.
00:42:00It is interesting to look at every year.
00:42:02They have a winning record every year with him
00:42:04and a losing record every year this decade when he's missed games.
00:42:09And obviously that one year was 2023 where he missed 56 games.
00:42:13They didn't make the playoffs.
00:42:14So they obviously need him.
00:42:16And that, again, not a scoop.
00:42:18They do need him, hopefully, for their sake, just a few days.
00:42:22He had played in 108 consecutive games prior to last time.
00:42:25Well, one thing I know about Judgey,
00:42:28there's got to be something because he wants to be in that lineup.
00:42:31He'll do anything to be in that lineup.
00:42:33So it's got to be something a little more than just a small thing.
00:42:37So hopefully he's okay because you're right, Johnny.
00:42:40When he's in the lineup, they're a completely different team
00:42:43than when he's out of the lineup.
00:42:44They said it's a nagging injury.
00:42:45I would imagine over the course of 162, you, I mean, you're a career 302 hitter.
00:42:49There are so many nagging injuries.
00:42:51This seems it – do you stop because it nags?
00:42:55Does he know his body so well that he knows this is, you know,
00:42:58the precursor of something to come?
00:43:00Or how do you handle stuff like this?
00:43:02Because as a ball player, as the star of our game, I'm sure he has a lot of nagging pains.
00:43:06Oh, there's no doubt.
00:43:07Everybody in the big leagues is – something's nagging them.
00:43:10Sure.
00:43:10But when you start talking about, like, the rib cage,
00:43:12and then when I heard his shoulders bother them.
00:43:14Yeah.
00:43:15Uh-oh.
00:43:15Uh-oh.
00:43:15Like, I've had a shoulder injury the whole season.
00:43:17I kind of played through and had really struggled that year.
00:43:20And the shoulder matters a ton.
00:43:22So, like, when I started to hear his shoulders bothering him,
00:43:24that's when the red flag went up for me a little bit.
00:43:26But, like I said, hopefully it'll take a couple days,
00:43:28maybe some anti-inflammatories, and hopefully get back soon.
00:43:31One home run since May 11th.
00:43:33The batting average is .206.
00:43:34So, by the way, good pitching matchup tonight at the stadium.
00:43:38Garrett Cole-Bebe against Gavin Williams for the Guardians.
00:43:42And, remember, MLB Central – excuse me – will be live.
00:43:46You're getting choked up about it.
00:43:47You're so excited.
00:43:47Will be live at Yankee Stadium tomorrow morning.
00:43:50Let's talk about Matt Olsen.
00:43:52Yesterday he goes deep as the Atlanta Braves stay red hot.
00:43:55They beat the Toronto Blue Jays.
00:43:57And I said it during the highlight.
00:43:58It is appropriate that on Lou Gehrig Day,
00:44:01which yesterday was across Major League Baseball,
00:44:04the active Ironman holder or streak holder, Matt Olsen,
00:44:08would homer in the win.
00:44:11He is at 843 consecutive games played.
00:44:16And it just kind of puts into perspective one Lou Gehrig, Cal Ripken,
00:44:22and just how much further he has to go to even be in that conversation.
00:44:27Yeah, he's got 1,600 more games to go.
00:44:29Something like that.
00:44:31Even more than that.
00:44:32So, I mean, that's 10 more years.
00:44:34He's got five years in.
00:44:35And as Case said, everybody's got something bothering them while they're playing.
00:44:39So, it is incredible.
00:44:40843 games, ninth best, as you said, all time.
00:44:44Just amazing.
00:44:45You know, he passed 300 home runs this year.
00:44:47I think he's making a Hall of Fame case.
00:44:49It's interesting how that worked out for both teams, right?
00:44:52Freeman with the Dodgers.
00:44:53That obviously was a grand slam.
00:44:55And this is looking pretty good, too, right now for the Braves.
00:44:59You know, one thing that I think is so overlooked when you talk about evaluating players
00:45:05is the availability of guys like Matt Olsen, Peter Lonzo, these guys that play.
00:45:10Guys, I'm telling you right now, the most games I ever played in a year was 155 games,
00:45:14and it was a grind.
00:45:16It was a grind.
00:45:17These guys are playing 162 a year.
00:45:19Do you know how many days you come to the yard, you're like, wow, whether you're up or down.
00:45:22So, what I'm saying is, that's a skill.
00:45:25Yeah.
00:45:25Playing every day in the big leagues and showing up and producing is a skill.
00:45:29So, when you see a guy like, oh, he played 162.
00:45:31Are you kidding me?
00:45:32Yeah.
00:45:33Like, get me those guys in the lineup.
00:45:34And I remember when Carlos Mendoza told me with Pete Lonzo, I knew every day when he was
00:45:39hitting the line of three or four, I knew I could count on him to be there 162.
00:45:41I love that.
00:45:42I liken it to your dedication.
00:45:44Well, yeah, I have not missed a show since the trade deadline, which Juan Soto was traded
00:45:50to the Padres.
00:45:51Which is amazing with all the trauma that you've been through.
00:45:53Yeah.
00:45:54It's amazing.
00:45:55And he's able to put it aside, what's going on in his home life.
00:46:00Robert also said his nickname in high school was Snapdragon.
00:46:02It's time for the ultimate performance presented by Snapdragon.
00:46:06Aaron Nola working on Tuesday.
00:46:07It's strikeouts through five.
00:46:09He did it on Lou Gehrig Day and ALS personal to him.
00:46:12His uncle passed away in 2021 after a six-year battle.
00:46:16It was fastball command.
00:46:18He was in complete control case.
00:46:20The mix was perfect.
00:46:21If you can start to imagine as a Phillies fan, and we've said this for a long time, if you
00:46:26get this version of Aaron Nola and it's the Christopher Sanchez and it's Zach Wheeler, it's going to be a
00:46:31fun.
00:46:31You know what?
00:46:31They've been waiting for this.
00:46:32I don't think we thought Aaron Nola would be struggling as much as he has the last couple
00:46:37of years.
00:46:37But you're right, Shaz.
00:46:38If Nola can get back to something what he was a few years ago, and you look at his usage,
00:46:45his curveball, just kind of starting to throw it a little bit more.
00:46:48But you talk about Christopher Sanchez and Wheeler, and you could throw Nola in there again.
00:46:52Now you've got something.
00:46:53Yeah.
00:46:54And John, when you think about Dave Dombrowski, who we know is a big game hunter, you know,
00:47:02the potentially, what do you think potentially what this team could look like past the trade
00:47:07deadline?
00:47:07Or how active he is?
00:47:08Yeah, they look at right-handed bats.
00:47:10I mean, that's clearly the need.
00:47:12They're two best hitters.
00:47:13Really, three best hitters are left-handed.
00:47:15Obviously, Schwarber and Harper leading the way, but their right-handed hitters have generally
00:47:20underachieved this year, and that is really what they're looking at.
00:47:23Their rotation, including Lizardo as well, and Painter has obviously the ability to do
00:47:27it, looks pretty good.
00:47:29Now, you know, I included them on my school ball list because of Dave Dombrowski and how
00:47:33aggressive he is, and you never know what can happen and what the need, what need could
00:47:38arise.
00:47:39But right-handed bat is what they do.
00:47:40Yeah.
00:47:41And the other, going back to Aaron Nola, second consecutive start.
00:47:44He didn't walk about her, and that is huge for Aaron Nola.
00:47:48John, we're going to say goodbye to you.
00:47:49Thank you very much.
00:47:50The haircut looks great.
00:47:51Thank you.
00:47:51It was fabulous.
00:47:53Thank you.
00:47:53What's your guy's name?
00:47:54Lou?
00:47:55Leo.
00:47:56Leo.
00:47:56Yeah.
00:47:57Good job, Leo.
00:47:58Leo?
00:47:59Right now?
00:47:59Hey, Leo.
00:48:01I got to get him this clip now.
00:48:03Oh, that's right.
00:48:04I sent it to him.
00:48:05Leo.
00:48:06Leo's like, what?
00:48:06That puts a bow on our number one, still to come in our number two of your favorite morning
00:48:12show.
00:48:13Now that May has come and gone, let's recognize some of the great individual performances from
00:48:20the month that was.
00:48:21Coming up, we're announcing players and pitchers of the month next.
00:48:25Coming up, coming up and come over.
00:48:28Wanna be friends, just can't stand.
00:48:31I wanna be comfortable.
00:48:32All right.
00:48:42Hour two of two of MLB Central presented by Home Depot.
00:48:47Love spending our Wednesday with you, don't we?
00:48:49Good morning.
00:48:50Oh, yeah.
00:48:50Mom, are you kidding me?
00:48:51Are you kidding me?
00:48:52Nothing better.
00:48:52Love being with you guys.
00:48:53You're the best.
00:48:53Yeah, you got a doubleheader.
00:48:54You're on MLB now.
00:48:55Doubleheader, yeah.
00:48:56A lot of Sean Casey's in the air.
00:48:58Hello.
00:48:59How you doing?
00:49:00How you doing?
00:49:01Sean Casey, Robert Flores, Lawrence, I'll have you just as a recap of what happened this
00:49:04past hour.
00:49:05I miss my schmuntier airline flight, and Robert got a very important house guest who left a
00:49:12very unfortunate gift.
00:49:14Again, just to have the gumption and the wherewithal to perform on the road like that, under those
00:49:23circumstances.
00:49:23Maybe they didn't watch an hour ago, what'd they do?
00:49:25Well, rewind the tape.
00:49:26I mean, if you can, if you rewind your DVR.
00:49:29My handyman left me the worst housewarming gift you could possibly imagine in one of the
00:49:36bathrooms of my house.
00:49:38Unbelievable.
00:49:39It's unbelievable.
00:49:40Are you ready to get serious and give out some hardware?
00:49:43Yes.
00:49:43Yes.
00:49:43It's time for the American League Player of the Month of May.
00:49:47It is gone!
00:49:52It's gone!
00:49:54A grand slam for Kurtz!
00:49:57Three straight games a home run.
00:50:00Kurtz will reach base for 47 consecutive games.
00:50:04It is gone!
00:50:06A mammoth home run for Kurtz!
00:50:09His 10th of the year!
00:50:11And the big honors.
00:50:13Feeling bombish.
00:50:17So much to like about the athletics and Nick Kurtz at the top of the list.
00:50:21Look at these numbers last month.
00:50:22And he stayed hot on Tuesday at five home runs in the month of May.
00:50:25And he was answering questions at his locker the other day and said he felt completely locked
00:50:31in, I'll say, with these numbers.
00:50:34The American League Player of the Month.
00:50:36Time for your NL Player of the Month.
00:50:40Oh, crushed to right center by J.J.
00:50:43Bleday!
00:50:44Oh, yeah.
00:50:46Good night, I think.
00:50:48Well, stay hot, J.J.
00:50:50Bleday.
00:50:51And continue to produce.
00:50:52J.J.
00:50:54Bleday!
00:50:54Oh, day long!
00:50:57Clombers and back-to-back A.B.s!
00:50:59J.J.
00:50:59Bleday has been a five for this team.
00:51:02Swing the bat like that, you're going to get plenty of opportunity.
00:51:07Case, J.J.
00:51:08Bleday came in studio and he talked about finding a home in Cincinnati.
00:51:12And the numbers prove it.
00:51:13It's been a process for him.
00:51:15He's tinkered.
00:51:15He's worked on his game to this point.
00:51:17And I feel like some guys have success right away.
00:51:20He was a fourth overall pick.
00:51:22And it has been a process to get to the point.
00:51:24What a sign.
00:51:25And he's figuring a lot of stuff out.
00:51:27And the Reds couldn't be happier.
00:51:29No, no doubt.
00:51:29He signed him.
00:51:30Eight home runs in the month of May alone.
00:51:32One year deal?
00:51:33One year deal.
00:51:34Both he and Kurtz were fourth overall pick.
00:51:37So it's definitely good to see Nick Kurtz find himself a home there in Cincinnati.
00:51:43All right, let's talk about the pitching side now as we get ready to hand out some more hardware.
00:51:48Your boy on the left.
00:51:49Your pitchers of the month.
00:51:50Your boy, Robert.
00:51:51From the American League, Spencer Erighetti.
00:51:54Look at what he did in the month of May.
00:51:57And you could argue, first of all, he started the year in AAA.
00:52:00You could argue he's been the Astros' best pitcher.
00:52:03He goes tonight against Paul Skeens.
00:52:05And then Christopher Sanchez pulls off the rare double.
00:52:10He is your pitcher of the month as well as the pitch hand winner for the month of May.
00:52:16So don't sleep on that.
00:52:184-0, 39 innings.
00:52:20Look at the strikeouts to walks.
00:52:2345 strikeouts, three walks.
00:52:26And Duro did that skybox on him the other day.
00:52:28It was the deception of hiding the ball to the last second.
00:52:30It makes him so difficult.
00:52:31Your rookies of the month in the American League.
00:52:33Monotaki Murakami.
00:52:34Hopefully he gets back on the field rather quickly, dealing with a hamstring.
00:52:39And T.J. Rumfield.
00:52:40You talk about a guy.
00:52:41We talked about J.J. Bladet trying to find a home.
00:52:44T.J. Rumfield has bounced around a little bit.
00:52:46He really has.
00:52:47And, man, he looks really, really good.
00:52:48And that's it.
00:52:49He's found a nice home out there in Colorado.
00:52:50Yeah, congratulations to T.J. Rumfield.
00:52:53The batting average, .310, slugging, .483.
00:52:57Your relievers of the month, yep.
00:52:59The usual suspects because these guys have been excellent so far this season.
00:53:04Kate Smith and Mason Miller.
00:53:05Mason, 7 for 7 in safe chances.
00:53:08Kate Smith, 13 for 13.
00:53:10The whip at .73 in the opponents hitting just .121 against Mason Miller.
00:53:17Congratulations to all of our winners.
00:53:21All right, let's take a quick timeout.
00:53:22When we come back, one day after we celebrated Lou Gehrig's day, we bring you the story of
00:53:28a Royals fan and how her fight against ALS has inspired her favorite team.
00:53:35Stay with us.
00:53:41Earlier this season, we highlighted the story of Sarah Nauser, a former Kansas City police
00:53:46officer at Kauffman Stadium who was diagnosed with ALS nearly eight years ago.
00:53:51Sarah is a lot of things, an advocate for ALS research and awareness, a positive and dedicated
00:53:58hero in her community, and of course, a passionate fan of the Royals.
00:54:04As the 2026 season began, Sarah penned a letter to those Royals expressing gratitude for the
00:54:10team and the players who mean so much to her.
00:54:13And on Lou Gehrig Day, her Royals replied with a letter of their own.
00:54:19Enjoy.
00:54:28This one?
00:54:28Yeah, this camera.
00:54:29Yeah.
00:54:33Dear Sarah.
00:54:35Dear Sarah.
00:54:37Thank you.

00:59:59All right, let's go front and center and show you what they have missed.
01:00:02The Mariners remain red hot.
01:00:04They've won eight in a row.
01:00:05They beat the New York Mets.

01:00:17The Mariners beat the Mets 8-3.

01:00:28Dodgers taking on the Diamondbacks yesterday.
01:00:30Shohei Ohtani, who's going to start tonight?
01:00:33He hit a two-run.
01:00:34Yeah, he hit a two-run triple.
01:00:36Dodgers go on to win 6-5.
01:00:38Freddie Freeman, first three-hit game since game number three of the season.
01:00:44Freddie Freeman loves hitting in that yard.
01:00:46Dodgers go on to win 6-5.
01:00:48Corbin Carroll went deep in a loss.
01:00:51Rockies, Angels, and Anaheim.
01:00:52The Rockies were powered by homers from Hunter Goodman, Willie Castro.
01:00:58Grayson Rodriguez had a rough outing.
01:01:00T.J.

01:01:04Rockies go on to win 8-2 in Anaheim.
01:01:09Royals, Reds from Cincinnati.
01:01:11Spencer Steer, a two-home run game.
01:01:15He's hitting .343 over his last 18 games, and he has raised his average .245 from .245 to .277.
01:01:23Will Benson went deep, and then Blake Dunn walks it off in extra innings.
01:01:28Reds with a comeback win 4-3.
01:01:31And L.E.S., Marlins, Nats, Joe Mack got the scoring started in the fifth.
01:01:39Heriberto Hernandez and Otto Lopez.
01:01:42They go back to back to back.
01:01:46Marlins beat the Nationals 7-3.
01:01:49Tigers taking on the American League best Rays in the trop.
01:01:53Jack Flaherty got his first win of the season.
01:01:58That hadn't been good.
01:01:59Yeah, five scoreless, six strikeouts.
01:02:02He was attacking.
01:02:03He was in the zone, and the Tigers shut out the Rays 8-0 at the trop.
01:02:09By the way, Tarek Skubal's throwing a sim game or doing a bullpen right now.
01:02:15At 100 miles per hour.
01:02:17Yeah, AL Central Showdown in Minnesota, White Sox twins, Luke Keishel, RBI knock, Tristan Gray, he's been hot recently.
01:02:24He had an RBI.
01:02:26And then Alex Jackson, he tacks on with an insurance run.
01:02:31Twins hold on to win 6-4.
01:02:32I should mention the Rangers, they have won five in a row.
01:02:36They beat the Cardinals yesterday, but they can't make up really any ground on the Mariners because they keep winning.
01:02:41Orioles, Red Sox, Pete Alonso is starting to get hot, Case.
01:02:45Watch out when he heats up, good things are happening.
01:02:48Two-run homer in the third.
01:02:49Orioles go on to win 4-2 over the Red Sox.
01:02:55Gatorade is asking you, is it in you?
01:02:59Fueled by Gatorade.
01:03:02Take a look at Pete Alonso and what he's done in the last 14 games.
01:03:063.27 batting average, the four homers.
01:03:10And let me look at where the Orioles are at.
01:03:13They're three games back of .500.
01:03:14They're closing.
01:03:15They're doing good.
01:03:16Yeah, yeah.
01:03:16And they're just one game back of the final wild card spot, currently held by the Texas Rangers.
01:03:21There you go.
01:03:23There's a lot of people doing it.
01:03:24Mama said knock you out, right?
01:03:25You have been doing it, doing it.
01:03:27Locking in with me, guys.
01:03:28Woo!
01:03:29Doing it right out the gate.
01:03:30You have no doubt been doing it for the last week, brother.
01:03:32No doubt about it.
01:03:33Without hitting it, baby.
01:03:34That bat is a game changer.
01:03:36You are doing it.
01:03:38Doing it like to spread the love.
01:03:39Yeah, I like to spread the love.
01:03:41You spread the love.
01:03:43You showed just that you're doing it, your suits doing it, your shoes doing it.
01:03:46You know it.
01:03:46You know it.
01:03:47What guys are the big losers?
01:03:48Oh, are you kidding me?
01:03:49A lot of guys.
01:03:49I'm glad I am.
01:03:50A lot of guys.
01:03:50Let me saddle up guys.
01:03:51Let's get it.
01:03:51Here we go.
01:03:52I got to get ready to go, guys.
01:03:53You got to get ready to listen.
01:03:54This list, there's a lot of superstars on this list this week on the guys that are doing it.
01:03:59So, let's get this thing rolling, baby.
01:04:02That means roll it.
01:04:02How about this guy?
01:04:03Whoa!
01:04:04Hello, Juan Soto.
01:04:06Nine home runs.
01:04:07Over his last 17 game, guys, has raised his slug.
01:04:10A hundred and thirty points, Shahadi.
01:04:13Let's get it right here.
01:04:15Juan Soto, you're doing it, Juan, and making big money.
01:04:19How are you feeling?
01:04:19You're Donny Alvarez.
01:04:20You know what he's doing, Roflow?
01:04:22You know, you're falling off.
01:04:23Yeah, he's hitting tanks.
01:04:24He's hitting tanks all over the place.
01:04:27Hit his 21st homer last night.
01:04:29AL lead.
01:04:30Yeah.
01:04:30Listen, OPS, over a thousand.
01:04:33Second in our base and slug.
01:04:34This guy really has been doing it all year long.
01:04:37But for this episode, he's doing it again.
01:04:39You are not out of, baby.
01:04:40Ronald Acuna, Jr.
01:04:42Oh, yeah.
01:04:42He's back.
01:04:4416 for his last 16.
01:04:46Five home runs.
01:04:48Five of those bombs.
01:04:49This guy's really a difference maker in this lineup.
01:04:52But when I'm watching Acuna right now in the Braves, they're loving it because he is doing it.
01:04:57Let's go out to Arizona, guys.
01:04:58Cattell Marte.
01:04:59He's doing it, too.
01:05:01Hitting absolute missiles.
01:05:03385 with a 708 slug in his last 16 games.
01:05:06Incredible.
01:05:07Six doubles, five homers, 15 ribbies in his last previous 41.
01:05:12He's got 21 in his last 16.
01:05:13And he looks great in the uniform.
01:05:14He looks so great in the uniform.
01:05:16Jack Diesel.
01:05:17Brian Reynolds out there.
01:05:19We talked about O'Neal Cruz earlier.
01:05:20I love our man Brian Reynolds.
01:05:22333 with a 438 on-base percentage and a 550 slug.
01:05:26Last 17 games.
01:05:27Big walk-off homer the other night.
01:05:29Seven doubles, two bombs, 12 RBIs in that span.
01:05:32He's doing it out there in the city of champions.
01:05:35Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, guys.
01:05:37And how about this guy?
01:05:38Good job.
01:05:39John Peterson.
01:05:39Left for dead last year.
01:05:41Didn't have the best year.
01:05:42He's back again.
01:05:442026.
01:05:44He's doing it.
01:05:46356.
01:05:47778 slug over his last 14 games with five bombs in that span.
01:05:50And you said it earlier in a row, Flo, the Rangers, they're making a push.
01:05:53That's right.
01:05:54Because John Peterson's doing it.
01:05:55And he's leading the way.
01:05:57Let's go, guys.
01:05:57And he's in the leadoff spot.
01:05:59He's in the leadoff spot.
01:06:01Hey, that's good.
01:06:01That's great.
01:06:02The Texas Rangers.
01:06:03Also, Ezekiel Duran has been excellent.
01:06:05Really good.
01:06:06For the Texas Rangers.
01:06:07Is Robert doing it in that suit?
01:06:08Robert's really doing it.
01:06:09That blue suit?
01:06:09Really doing it.
01:06:10Pinstripe action with your eyes?
01:06:11Yeah, and so was his handyman.
01:06:12He was really doing it, too.
01:06:14Gross.
01:06:15You have to let him know.
01:06:17It's not quite hitting my ear right, but I know what you're doing.
01:06:20You have to let him know.
01:06:21I know what you're going for.
01:06:22He needs to know.
01:06:23Hey, I want to show you this here real quick.
01:06:26This happened in the White Sox-Twins game.
01:06:27Now, the Twins got the win.
01:06:29But this is a brand of an element of baseball that I'm so glad we're starting to see more
01:06:36of.
01:06:36First of all, Luis Angel Acuna draws a walk.
01:06:40Then Case, he steals second.
01:06:42Then Case, he steals third.
01:06:46And what happens when you use speed and athleticism?
01:06:51Sometimes you can score without the benefit of a hit.
01:06:54That's called manufacturing your own run.
01:06:56Yeah, absolutely.
01:06:58Part of the many reasons why the White Sox are a fun watch.
01:07:02We were showing the American League and wins leaders and the White Sox right on there.
01:07:06And I thought, my gosh, if we had shown you that graphic, none of us would have had that.
01:07:11Well, right now, the Tampa Bay Rays are the top team in the American League.
01:07:15And when we come back, we're going to talk with their closer, Brian Baker, doing a little
01:07:18shake and bake.
01:07:20Shake and bake, baby.
01:07:21Shake and bake.
01:07:22Please don't say that when we talk to him.
01:07:24Yeah.
01:07:24We'll see.
01:07:25Now I have to say that.
01:07:26We're definitely saying that.
01:07:27Now we're definitely saying that.
01:07:28Yeah.
01:07:30Baker.
01:07:31Shake and bake.
01:07:32On the other side.
01:07:33Stay with us.
01:07:42MLB Central.
01:07:46Welcome back.
01:07:47MLB Central is presented by the Home Depot.
01:07:50There's a live look at St. Petersburg, Florida.
01:07:53That's where the Tampa Bay Rays call home and they continue their series against the Detroit
01:07:57Tigers this afternoon.
01:07:59Tigers have won the first two games and Rays hoping to reverse that trend a little bit later
01:08:06this afternoon.
01:08:07Nick Martinez, Troy Melton.
01:08:09That is your pitching matchup.
01:08:10It's a game many of you will see right here on MLB Network.
01:08:16Hey, let's say hello to Brian Baker.
01:08:18He's the Tampa Bay Rays closer.
01:08:20He grew up in Florida.
01:08:21He's a Florida kid and he's now starring for the Tampa Bay Rays.
01:08:25Six team saves for the Tampa Bay Rays.
01:08:29And his beard is perfection.
01:08:30Yeah, there's a lot to dive in here.
01:08:32But Brian, I want to talk about your performance thus far.
01:08:36You get traded from the Orioles to the Rays.
01:08:41And I'm wondering, what did you think when that trade happened?
01:08:44And did you envision this kind of role and this kind of success with your new team?
01:08:52Yeah, that's a good question, man.
01:08:53I think when the trade happened, I definitely wasn't expecting it.
01:08:57So it was a little bit of a whirlwind I was thrown into last year for sure.
01:09:02But getting settled in over here with this organization and these people around me, it's been fantastic.
01:09:07And, yeah, just going into the season, I didn't really know what the role would be.
01:09:12I knew it would probably be towards the back end.
01:09:14And, you know, even starting last year, I really got shortened out, meaning I really only throw an inning at
01:09:21a time
01:09:22and just be ready to go, you know, as many days as possible out of the week.
01:09:25So just kind of fully embracing that role and not knowing whether it be, you know, the 7th, the 8th,
01:09:29the 9th,
01:09:30or whenever it may be, just kind of preparing for that this year.
01:09:33And the cards have just fallen how they've fell so far.
01:09:37So it's been a good start, and I'm happy to be part of this team.
01:09:41Fake, whenever I see people getting traded to the Rays or the Rays picking up guys,
01:09:45I go, oh, they know something about this guy.
01:09:47They're going to do something.
01:09:48And I'm kind of deep diving into you.
01:09:50It looks like that changeup has become a real weapon since you've been over to Tampa.
01:09:54Can you talk about that, the usage of it, and being with the Rays and how they look at things?
01:10:01Yeah, man, it's incredible.
01:10:03The staff they have here with how they kind of get pitchers in the right mindset
01:10:08and kind of really get them to play towards their strengths and use that to their advantage
01:10:13and try to go right at hitters and try to get outs as efficiently as possible, you know.
01:10:17So, yeah, the changeup has just been a work in progress for me for several years now.
01:10:22And I think it's always been my best off speed.
01:10:25It's just getting more and more comfortable with it.
01:10:27I made a little bit of a grip tweak last year before spring training.
01:10:32So, I think that's really helped me just be able to throw it over the plate
01:10:34and kind of have more confidence to throw it in kind of any spot and really trust it.
01:10:39And, like I said, kind of getting over here, they've made me realize that as well.
01:10:43And working with these two catchers over here, I always bring these guys up
01:10:47when anybody asks me about any of the pitching side just because it's not a one-man thing.
01:10:51It's a team thing with the catcher.
01:10:53So, shout-out to Fortes and Fiducia.
01:10:56They do a fantastic job.
01:10:57So, I think it's just a little bit of all that kind of combined has led to, you know,
01:11:01that higher usage of the changeup and some success with it.
01:11:04What is your relationship like with those catchers?
01:11:06And how is it 50-50?
01:11:08I always wondered that.
01:11:08How much are you dominating the conversation and what you want to throw versus them calling it?
01:11:14I think it's different for everybody.
01:11:15I personally, I don't want to think very much when I'm on the mound.
01:11:19So, a lot of it, I put off the game planning and kind of leading the way to everybody else.
01:11:25And I just go with whatever I'm told most of the time.
01:11:28You know, there's an occasional, you know, shake-off.
01:11:31I really want to throw this certain pitch in this spot.
01:11:33But I'd say most of the time I'm really going off their plan and kind of just piggybacking off them
01:11:38and trying to execute.
01:11:39I mean, you said that you were ready 7-8-9 in years past.
01:11:42And now it's ninth, you know, full-time closer.
01:11:44How does that shift your mindset?
01:11:45That question's asked all the time, but I'm so curious because you seem like the nicest guy,
01:11:50but you're so mean.
01:11:51You're a mean, mean man.
01:11:53So, how does it shift for you?
01:11:56I guess thank you for that.
01:11:58No, yeah, it's definitely a shift.
01:12:00I think when you go into the game and try to close it out, you've got to be pretty intense,
01:12:06at least on my end.
01:12:07So, yeah, it's an important three outs to get for the team to secure a win.
01:12:12And it usually comes with a lot of adrenaline, so I kind of just try to use that
01:12:16and kind of use the energy of the crowd and kind of use that to my advantage
01:12:20and try to get the best out of myself so I can get a win for the team.
01:12:23Brian, we saw this picture on your Instagram.
01:12:25I think we have it here.
01:12:26Hopefully you can see it as well.
01:12:29This is a little Brian Baker at the trough.
01:12:34I mean.
01:12:36Now it's your place of employment.
01:12:38Yeah, I'm wondering, when you look at that image, what comes to mind in light of growing up there
01:12:44as a fan, catching ball games there, to now, as Lauren said, plying your trade?
01:12:49Yeah, I mean, to be honest, it still doesn't feel real at times.
01:12:52It's a little bit of a pinch me moment, I think,
01:12:56especially just getting to come into this building at a young age and see a couple games.
01:13:00And, you know, I grew up in the panhandle of Florida,
01:13:03so the Rays were the local team, one channel above ESPN.
01:13:09So I was back and forth between watching Rays games and watching ESPN.
01:13:14So it's pretty cool to be able to call this a workplace now
01:13:17and get to come in here and do what I love to do.
01:13:21So it's a blessing.
01:13:23Who was your favorite Ray growing up?
01:13:25Ooh, man, that's a good question.
01:13:28I mean, it's hard not to say Longoria.
01:13:31I personally was a Carl Crawford guy, too, though.
01:13:33I played a little bit of outfield when I was younger.
01:13:35Okay.
01:13:37Yeah, and I was actually fast, too.
01:13:39So I had some similarities with Carl Crawford no longer, but way back in the day.
01:13:43You're not fast anymore?
01:13:44No more?
01:13:46I think I'm still relatively fast, but compared to these position players we got, no.
01:13:51I've heard you talk about you growing up in an athletic family.
01:13:54When did baseball start for you?
01:13:55Were other sports in play?
01:13:57How did that come to be?
01:13:59Yeah, I think most all other sports were in play, you know, outside of, like, hockey.
01:14:05You know, there's not too much hockey in the panhandle.
01:14:07But, yeah, I was playing just about everything.
01:14:10I grew up on a golf course, so played a lot of golf growing up.
01:14:15And I was actually – basketball was my first love.
01:14:19So I played all the way through high school and probably could have played in college as well.
01:14:23But I had to make a decision my senior year of high school, and I think I ended up making
01:14:27the right one to stick with baseball.
01:14:29I think I had more of a future in that.
01:14:30So – but, yeah, I definitely still miss basketball and competing in that aspect.
01:14:35But I do get to play some golf now.
01:14:37So it's – I still try to be a multi-sport athlete now.
01:14:41Are the Knicks going to win or what?
01:14:45Oh, man.
01:14:46I don't – I wouldn't bet against Webman-Yama.
01:14:49I think the Spurs – the Spurs are some serious.
01:14:52But it should be a good series.
01:14:53Well, it helps they've got a nine-foot dude on their team.
01:14:56Exactly.
01:14:56Exactly.
01:14:57I wouldn't want to be guarding that.
01:14:58Big, what about you?
01:14:59We always like to ask in the show for breakfast.
01:15:02What are you lining up to eat for breakfast?
01:15:04You know, are you a pancake guy?
01:15:05Are you an eggs guy?
01:15:07He's an eggs guy.
01:15:08Look at that beard.
01:15:11I am a full-blown breakfast sandwich connoisseur.
01:15:16Oh, yeah.
01:15:17I love it.
01:15:17Yeah, if you put a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich of any variety in front of me,
01:15:21it's getting deleted very quickly.
01:15:23That's what I go to.
01:15:24I love it.
01:15:24Brian Baker has 16 saves for the Tampa Bay Rays.
01:15:27That is the third most in baseball behind Kate Smith and Mason Miller.
01:15:32Brian, it was great to catch up with you.
01:15:34Thank you very much for the time.
01:15:35Good luck today.
01:15:36And hopefully we can catch up with you down the road.
01:15:38Thank you.
01:15:38It was a blast, guys.
01:15:40Appreciate you guys.
01:15:40Have a good one.
01:15:41You got it.
01:15:41You as well.
01:15:42That's Brian Baker of the Tampa Bay Rays.
01:15:42Don't let the niceness fool you.
01:15:44I'm not fooling you.
01:15:46I'll dominate you.
01:15:47I'll dominate you.
01:15:48We were saying earlier, about five minutes ago, we had this live shot,
01:15:52and here it is, of Tarek Skubel.
01:15:54Speaking of domination.
01:15:56Was it yesterday he threw the SIM game?
01:15:57He threw it on Monday.
01:15:59Okay, so now this is just.
01:16:00And I think it was 64 pitches, 45 for strikes or something.
01:16:04Nase, was that right?
01:16:04And he's a full uni, too.
01:16:05Yeah, full uni.
01:16:06Going a little Max Scherzer here.
01:16:08He's like, get me in the game, please.
01:16:10All right.
01:16:11It's been six weeks.
01:16:12Hey, when we come back, we're going to play one of our favorite games.
01:16:16Who can it be now?
01:16:18Can you guess the batting stance if it's blurred out?
01:16:24Well, Sean and I are going to try to figure that out.
01:16:26Lauren's hosting.
01:16:28That looked like Adrian Beltre right there.
01:16:30So I'm already going to one.
01:16:32Already up.
01:16:32Not on the list.
01:16:33And I'll let you know, I saw the rundown earlier, so I know most of it.
01:16:42Welcome back.
01:16:43MLB Central is presented by the Home Depot.
01:16:47A reminder, our showcase game tonight comes to you from Phoenix, Arizona.
01:16:53It's the Dodgers and Diamondbacks coming your way, 930 Eastern.
01:16:58I think that's 630 Phoenix time.
01:17:00It changes depending on the season.
01:17:02I know.
01:17:03Oh, well, 930 Eastern.
01:17:05Anywho.
01:17:06Right here on MLB Network.
01:17:07So Dodgers and Diamondbacks is our showcase game.
01:17:10Can you guess the blurred image of the guy who played for both teams?
01:17:13Casey, by the way, we're walking over here to see the segment.
01:17:16He was stretching, and then he said, I'm so good at this game.
01:17:21And I quote.
01:17:22All right.
01:17:23Are we ready?
01:17:24Up first.
01:17:26So the category player that played for both.
01:17:28I said that.
01:17:28Did you?
01:17:29I'm just making sure.
01:17:30Oh, God.
01:17:31I'm just making sure for me.
01:17:32Oh, that's Louise.
01:17:34There you go.
01:17:34I didn't get it.
01:17:35I didn't get it.
01:17:36Off Ben Sheets.
01:17:38He's going to hang on the curveball.
01:17:39He's going to hang on.
01:17:41He's going to crush one.
01:17:42How'd you do it?
01:17:43Get Ben Sheets.
01:17:44I did all right.
01:17:44He gets Ben.
01:17:45Ben Sheets was a.
01:17:46He gets a pack of a player.
01:17:47He gets a pack of a pitcher.
01:17:48Nasty stuff.
01:17:48He did all right against everybody.
01:17:50Yeah, that's true.
01:17:51He had Albert in the other day.
01:17:53We were like, how did you do?
01:17:54He was like, I hit 550.
01:17:56Yeah.
01:17:57They're like, all righty.
01:17:58He actually did well off everybody.
01:18:00Up next.
01:18:02He played seven seasons with the Diamondbacks from 2012 to 2018.
01:18:08The phenomenal A.J. Pollock.
01:18:10Oh, wow.
01:18:11That's a good one.
01:18:12I remember that.
01:18:13You always had that moniker before him.
01:18:15Three seasons with the Dodgers, 19 to 21, and won that 2020 World Series with them in Los Angeles.
01:18:22Oh, he did win the World Series with them.
01:18:23He had a nice little crew.
01:18:24He had a nice run.
01:18:25Gold glove in center field that year.
01:18:27Dodgers traded him to the White Sox for Craig Kimbrell before the 2022 season.
01:18:37He played five seasons with the Dodgers.
01:18:40Yes, sir.
01:18:41The Blue Jays and the Mets.
01:18:44Yeah.
01:18:44Woo.
01:18:46Three 40-plus homer seasons.
01:18:48He could rank.
01:18:49Three.
01:18:50Beautiful.
01:18:50I mean, so beautiful.
01:18:51He wrote a great book called The Zen in Baseball, too.
01:18:55Really?
01:18:55Yeah, it's a really good book.
01:18:56You guys got to read it.
01:18:58Just saying.
01:18:58Okay.
01:18:59Yeah, that's what it was.
01:19:00He set a total record for bases in a game.
01:19:04Yes.
01:19:05Yeah.
01:19:05Yes.
01:19:06We need to read more, Robert.
01:19:08I am reading a, what am I reading?
01:19:11Nothing.
01:19:11I'm reading a book on the Kennedy administration.
01:19:14Oh.
01:19:15And the death of Twitter.
01:19:18Reading this.
01:19:18Or you just lived that.
01:19:20No, no.
01:19:21There's a book on it.
01:19:23Up next, you're going to get this.
01:19:25Played one season with the Dodgers.
01:19:27Oh, Craig Council.
01:19:28You played with the Dodgers?
01:19:30I don't even remember him with the Dodgers.
01:19:311999 after he was traded.
01:19:33Worst conversation at first base ever right there, Craig Council.
01:19:36Yeah?
01:19:37I was like, who's a tough guy?
01:19:38Worst conversation ever.
01:19:39Really?
01:19:39He did tell me.
01:19:40I said, why didn't you talk?
01:19:42And you were kind of annoying.
01:19:43And he goes, because Pat Murphy scared me so bad when I was at Notre Dame to talk to
01:19:47any other player.
01:19:49And I just kept it going through the picture.
01:19:50He didn't want to be frat night.
01:19:52Yeah, he didn't want to frat night.
01:19:52I love it.
01:19:53I love watching Freddie Freeman.
01:19:54It's a full conversation.
01:19:55It's the best.
01:19:56Oh, that's a John Peterson.
01:19:57Yeah, we just mentioned him.
01:20:00Young John.
01:20:00And you're doing it, Liz.
01:20:01He made your doing it, Liz.
01:20:02He made my doing it, Liz.
01:20:03And who can it be now one day?
01:20:04I told you I was good at this game, Shahad, and I wasn't lying, Dave.
01:20:07You didn't even need to stretch.
01:20:10I'll just get one real quick.
01:20:12These might be a little tougher.
01:20:14Aaron Boone says he's really good at this game.
01:20:15He says he's very good.
01:20:16He loves this game.
01:20:17Oh, Boone is good.
01:20:18Oh, is that Tony Womack?
01:20:21Wait, wait.
01:20:21No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
01:20:23That's up.
01:20:23The center field.
01:20:24Steve Finley.
01:20:25Steve Finley.
01:20:26Get to know me.
01:20:26Get to know me one time.
01:20:28One time.
01:20:30Six seasons with the Diamondbacks.
01:20:31One with the Dodgers.
01:20:32Once you Google Tony Womack, you're going to realize how way off I was.
01:20:36You're way off.
01:20:37Okay.
01:20:38So way off.
01:20:38Way off.
01:20:39It's not even close.
01:20:40Not even close.
01:20:41Steve Finley can rake, too.
01:20:42He had a rake career.
01:20:43And go get it in center.
01:20:44Still ticked off that the Astros traded him.
01:20:46I believe, too.
01:20:48The Orioles, right?
01:20:49The Orioles.
01:20:50I like that.
01:20:50All right.
01:20:51These are your last two.
01:20:51Make them good.
01:20:52Seven seasons with the Dodgers.
01:20:55Yes.
01:20:561995 Rookie of the Year with the Diamondbacks.
01:20:59I had no idea, actually.
01:21:00I just knew it was him.
01:21:01As well.
01:21:02One season with Arizona back in 2003.
01:21:05Last one.
01:21:06You should get this right.
01:21:07He was with the Yankees.
01:21:08Oh, my.
01:21:09Way.
01:21:09Okay.
01:21:10Here we go.
01:21:11One more.
01:21:11Have we had a great game?
01:21:13It's a great game.
01:21:14I'm leaving you with pitchers.
01:21:15Oh, it's a pitcher.
01:21:16It's Zach Grinke.
01:21:16Yep.
01:21:17Yeah.
01:21:18There you go.
01:21:19It's our game seven for your team.
01:21:21Wow.
01:21:22Zach Grinke.
01:21:23Well, he had a great career.
01:21:25Is he a Hall of Famer?
01:21:26That's what I was just about to ask.
01:21:27I don't know.
01:21:29I think Nays is saying that he will.
01:21:31He was also a great hitter.
01:21:34No, he was a great hitter.
01:21:35Great hitter.
01:21:35Great athlete.
01:21:36Great hitter.
01:21:36That was fun.
01:21:37Good job, Lauren.
01:21:38Yeah, great job, Sean.
01:21:39You're great.
01:21:40Tony Womack, I apologize.
01:21:41Yeah.
01:21:42Yeah.
01:21:43Yeah.
01:21:43Whoops.
01:21:43That whoops.
01:21:44But thanks.
01:21:45I just want to talk about I'm great with that game.
01:21:47Good job.
01:21:48We were so well aware.
01:21:50Oh, my God.
01:21:52There we go.
01:21:53I used to like you.
01:21:53I used to like you.
01:21:54I used to like you.
01:21:54I used to like you.
01:21:54I used to like you.
01:21:54Don't leave me hanging.
01:21:56Ballpark Cam takes us to the Grotto.
01:21:59Case, you've been in that field.
01:22:01That pool.
01:22:01Oh, yeah.
01:22:02I've been in the pool cannonball, and I hit a ball in there, too, guys, in the game.
01:22:05By the way.
01:22:06Hello.
01:22:07Yeah.
01:22:07Things are going to get weird a little bit later on MLB Network.
01:22:12Put some chlorine in there.
01:22:12930 Eastern.
01:22:13Extra chlorine.
01:22:14It's the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks coming your way right here on MLB Network a little bit later.
01:22:20We'll be back to walk it off after this.
01:22:22Stay with us.
01:22:22Oh, God.
01:22:24You feel all right.
01:22:25You never look for me.
01:22:27So long it's time I've got to.
01:22:30Coming up at the top of the hour, it's MLB Now.
01:22:33We're going to be joined by Joey Votto, who's got some thoughts on the ABS system, plus Mariners pitching coach
01:22:39Pete Woodworth joins the program.
01:22:42Mariners, of course, have won eight in a row, and that starting pitching staff is a big reason why.
01:22:46Lay out.
01:22:49On June 2nd, as we have the last handful of years, we commemorate Lou Gehrig Day across Major League Baseball.
01:22:55And it is time for baseball.
01:22:56Going for Torrey.
01:22:58Welcome back.
01:22:59Now I don't know what he's doing.
01:23:00The letter.
01:23:02When you see him go to the slide, it almost always turns out well.
01:23:06Five-tool player.
01:23:07Six-tool to count how big his head is.
01:23:08Shades of Jose Canseco.
01:23:11Back to back to back.
01:23:13Bombs away, baby.
01:23:14I mean, another whale of an effort.
01:23:16High to career high with 12 strikeouts.
01:23:18Let's go, deliver us.
01:23:19The Reds win!
01:23:22Let's spin Wednesday together, shall we?
01:23:24Eight is great in Seattle for a few reasons.
01:23:27Eight runs on Tuesday night over the Mets, powering the Mariners to an eight-game winning streak.
01:23:32They're slugging in Seattle.
01:23:33Can they keep it going against Freddy Peralta in a day game to finish off the set?
01:23:38Looking for their 34th win of the season and to extend their two-and-a-half-game lead atop the
01:23:44West.
01:23:44The Guardians came into the Bronx and let the Yankees know.
01:23:47Nine runs on 12 hits.
01:23:49Three of those runs late in the game to put the win on ice.
01:23:52And now we get to see Gavin Williams and Garrett Cole.
01:23:55Garrett Cole yet to surrender a run this season.
01:23:58How cool.
01:23:58Twelve and two-thirds shutout to start his year.
01:24:01And another night.
01:24:02Another Dodger win.
01:24:03Make it 39 on the season for them.
01:24:06And this one over Arizona, L.A.'s cushion in the West.
01:24:09Six games.
01:24:10Hoping to make it more tonight in the desert.
01:24:11And it helps when your starter has a sub-1 ERA.
01:24:15Shelly Ohtani on the mound hasn't allowed more than two runs in a start all season long.
01:24:209.40 from Chase Field tonight.
01:24:22Can't wait.
01:24:24Lauren, you're going to have to tell me where you're registered so I can get some gifts.
01:24:28Ben, Matt, Neil.
01:24:30Odds and Trends presented by FanDuel.
01:24:31It's just you and I, Lauren.
01:24:33Here we go.
01:24:33It's just us.
01:24:33Otto Lopez to record at least two hits.
01:24:37Taking on the Nats.
01:24:38Immediately I thought D-Row would say, we're just giving out multi-hit games in the show.
01:24:43He's taught us well.
01:24:44So, no.
01:24:45Okay.
01:24:45I'm going to go yes for Otto Lopez.
01:24:47I believe in you, Otto.
01:24:49Lauren, doesn't it?
01:24:50Oh, stop.
01:24:50Shohei Ohtani to record at least six and a half strikeouts.
01:24:54He's got seven or more in seven of his last eight.
01:24:56I'll take the over.
01:24:57Sure.
01:24:58Yeah.
01:24:59You never, you never go.
01:25:01Yeah.
01:25:01Got to go with the Shohei.
01:25:03Guys, FanDuel is inviting you to call your shot with Daily Dinger.
01:25:06Make your pre-pick on who's hitting a home run in their game.
01:25:09If you're right and you get a profit boost the next day, play your game on FanDuel.
01:25:12It's the home of home runs.
01:25:14It's just you and me.
01:25:15It's time to say goodbye.
01:25:16And tomorrow, we have a really fun show.
01:25:19We're going to be live at Yankee Stadium.
01:25:20That's right.
01:25:20Guardians are in town.
01:25:21So 10 to 12 p.m. Eastern time, right here from the desk, I guess.
01:25:27Car service leaves at 7.30.
01:25:29Why does that bother you so much?
01:25:30Well, I just like to get here at 8.30.
01:25:337.30 is, of course, is an hour earlier.
01:25:36Hey, there's the wedding cake.
01:25:39Me, you, and Sean Casey.
01:25:42I do not.
01:25:43Friends.
