00:00:00Come on in. Good morning. JT Ginn goes from a potential no hitter to a tough loss. Coming up, we've
00:00:08got the details on a wild night in Anaheim. Plus, Mason Miller shuts down the Dodgers, but it wasn't easy.
00:00:15D-Rose taking a deep dive. Cardinals broadcaster Chip Carey joins the show, and we're breaking down three of the
00:00:21hottest hitters in the game.
00:00:23And Lauren's not in studio, so it's like, you know, when the teacher leaves. Oh, there she is. Way to
00:00:31go, Lauren. You ruined it. You ruined it. You can't escape me. You ruined it.
00:00:56And now the central is presented by Blue Buffalo. Mark DeRosa, Robert Flores, Lauren Shahadi is in Atlanta as part
00:01:03of her TBS hosting duties, and she joins us via ballpark cam at Truist Field. Good morning. Good morning, Lauren.
00:01:10Good morning. What game do you have on TBS tonight? It's hot here in Atlanta. I got the Blue Jays
00:01:14and the Yanks. Game two of the series. Be there, be square. Lauren, I'm mad at you. So I traveled
00:01:18to Atlanta for a game in New York. Wait, why are you mad?
00:01:21So yesterday she came in, and she loves, we were talking about bakeries, and you love everybody's birthday, and you
00:01:27go out and you get birthday cupcakes and cookies.
00:01:31She handed me this package of cookies from, I guess, this bougie bakery.
00:01:36LeVan Bakery. It's so bougie. There's a line out the door. Robert, they're like $10 a cookie.
00:01:41No, they're good. They're 800 calories per.
00:01:43I've had them.
00:01:44So last night, as I'm watching Dodger's Padres, I'm feeling like I need something sweet.
00:01:51Yeah.
00:01:52I didn't have anything. I usually don't put snacks in there.
00:01:55I look in my bag. I find those three cookies.
00:01:58Treasure trove.
00:01:58And I basically made love to two chocolate chip and walnut cookies at 1130.
00:02:04And they were like, this big, this thick. Oh, the cookie. Okay. I was like, wow, that's just.
00:02:14So you owe me like two pounds that I put on last night.
00:02:18This guy.
00:02:19Right on the flanks.
00:02:20Yeah.
00:02:21You can't eat three or two of those cookies.
00:02:24That's like a half cookie situation.
00:02:26Okay. So at the airport, by the way, there were no aliens. I'm here to report.
00:02:30But I feel like you guys should be with me on every plane I take because I was at the
00:02:34window
00:02:35and I drank a tea before I got on. So I had to excuse myself, go to the restroom about
00:02:3920 minutes
00:02:39into the flight. And then an hour into the flight, I had to go again. But I hear you guys
00:02:44in my ear.
00:02:45You're only allowed one. You're not allowed two trips.
00:02:48There needs to be a medical situation. I just sat there miserable because you guys.
00:02:53If you have to go more than once, you just have to carry something to, you know, alleviate that.
00:03:01You want me to go in a bag?
00:03:03Or ask to sit in the aisle. Good call.
00:03:05Robert thought he gave energy on that cold open. And then when we ran it, he wasn't happy with it.
00:03:10I didn't have the energy.
00:03:11He wasn't happy with it.
00:03:12You can make the adjustment right now.
00:03:14Yeah. That's the thing about TV. You think you're giving energy.
00:03:18But sometimes it doesn't appear that way. It doesn't come off that way.
00:03:21So here we go.
00:03:22It's never as bad or as good as you think.
00:03:25That's right.
00:03:26Since D-Rowe had those cookies last night, he will not be able to partake in whatever was going on
00:03:31with the Rays and the Angels fans.
00:03:34Tarps off.
00:03:35And my goodness, do we have a movement.
00:03:38D-Rowe, you stay home. You're not allowed.
00:03:41The Rays fans, the latest to show.
00:03:43Sons out, guns out.
00:03:44What do you mean you don't know?
00:03:45So you wanted to just stay the Cardinals?
00:03:47I just thought it was just so pure and so organic.
00:03:50Well, this is what our society does, Robert.
00:03:52And now we have a potential.
00:03:5416 runs over the Orioles.
00:03:55Yeah, now it's turning into the Wave.
00:03:57So here we go.
00:03:58Don't kid yourself.
00:03:59The Rays might be winning in a World Series.
00:04:01Yeah, I know.
00:04:01We could be there.
00:04:02Putting eyeballs on them on a night.
00:04:03Wake up call.
00:04:04Let's go to Anaheim.
00:04:05And boy, did things get weird in the final moments of this game.
00:04:10But Nick Kurtz in the fifth.
00:04:14That is a double down the line.
00:04:16And in doing so, extends his on-base streak to 41 consecutive games.
00:04:23But the story, in so many ways, was J.T. Gens.
00:04:27He was dominant.
00:04:30Ten strikeouts.
00:04:32Eight innings of work.
00:04:34One walk.
00:04:36He's got a no-hitter through eight in the ninth.
00:04:41You've got a runner on second for Lawrence Butler.
00:04:44That's going to fall in.
00:04:46That's a base hit.
00:04:47And the A's are on the board.
00:04:50But we go to the bottom of the ninth.
00:04:52J.T. Ginn.
00:04:53Three outs away from a date with destiny.
00:04:58Facing Adam Frazier.
00:05:00Leading off.
00:05:02No hitter over.
00:05:05What a fantastic performance.
00:05:07But he's still in there.
00:05:09Next batter.
00:05:10No.
00:05:11Zach Nero.
00:05:12No.
00:05:12Cero Nedo.
00:05:14A two-run walk-off homer.
00:05:18No hitter gone.
00:05:20Shutout gone.
00:05:21Win gone.
00:05:22A's snapped their six-game losing streak.
00:05:26Winning it in emphatic, dramatic fashion.
00:05:29Two to one.
00:05:31So, J.T. Ginn, by the way, the first pitcher since Rich Hill in 2017
00:05:36to have a complete game walk-off loss after tossing eight no-hit innings.
00:05:43And these are the three instances in which a team has been no-hit through eight,
00:05:50trailing, and ultimately get the win.
00:05:53That's why this game is cruel.
00:05:55Yep.
00:05:55Yes, it is.
00:05:56Let's get some post-game reactions starting with Zach Nero.
00:06:00We never give up.
00:06:01That's the biggest thing.
00:06:02We never do.
00:06:03And Frazier getting on right there, that's what a true leader does.
00:06:06And, you know, I just got to do my job, get it to Mike.
00:06:08But tonight was my night, and I got it done.
00:06:11And, you know, those fans out there in left field, everybody out here,
00:06:14we all deserve a W, so it feels good.
00:06:16Now let's go.
00:06:17It's a crazy game we play, you know.
00:06:19So, yeah, I feel behind 2-0.
00:06:22Threw a good sinker.
00:06:24And, you know, he was waiting on it.
00:06:25He put a good swing on it.
00:06:26So, tip of capsule.
00:06:28JT did such a phenomenal job all night, keeping guys off balance.
00:06:32This stuff was nasty.
00:06:34That's why this season's 162 games.
00:06:37It's going to be hard to flush this one, but got it, and we'll find them off.
00:06:42Man, your heart just aches for JT Ginn because he was so good.
00:06:47Blue Jays, Yankees, and the Bronx, Paul Goldschmidt.
00:06:51That's out of here.
00:06:52His fifth home run of the season, and just like that, it's 1-0 Yankees in the bottom of the
00:06:57first.
00:06:58Another leadoff homer for Goldschmidt.
00:07:00In the fourth, friend of the program, Ernie Clement.
00:07:03Two strikes.
00:07:06Come on, Ernie.
00:07:07That's his third home run of the season, and the Blue Jays, thanks to Big Ernie,
00:07:12have a 3-1 lead.
00:07:14In the fifth, George the Animal Springer,
00:07:17who earlier in the game had his 1,500 career hit.
00:07:22This is a solo homer, and the Blue Jays take a 4-3 lead.
00:07:27Home half of the seven.
00:07:28How good has Cody Bellinger been recently?
00:07:32His team is down 5-3, but not anymore.
00:07:36His sixth home run of the year ties the game at 5.
00:07:40Still in the seventh, Jazz Chisholm is wearing Giancarlo Stanton's pants.
00:07:47I'm being serious.
00:07:49That is a real thing.
00:07:50And he is 9-16 with two extra base hits in those four games since he switched to Giancarlo's pants.
00:07:59Boy, that's just not hitting the ear right.
00:08:02In the ninth, David Bednar facing Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
00:08:08Get to the Java!
00:08:10Yankees hang on to win by the final of 7-6.
00:08:20All right.
00:08:21Dodgers, Padres, first meeting between these division rivals.
00:08:27Miguel and Dujar, a solo homer, his fourth of the year.
00:08:31And it's 1-0 San Diego as they jump on Yashinobo Yamamoto just like that.
00:08:35However, Dero, he rebounded in a big way.
00:08:39Yeah, Yamamoto was great.
00:08:408 strikeouts, 7 innings.
00:08:42True pitchers duel last night, Petko.
00:08:46And on the flip side, Michael King.
00:08:49This is the guy I want to talk about.
00:08:50Pitch for pitch.
00:08:51And I know you're going to talk more about him in your deep dive.
00:08:549 strikeouts, 7 innings for Michael King.
00:08:58We go to the ninth.
00:08:59Here comes the Grim Reaper.
00:09:02Mason Miller on for the save.
00:09:04In a jam.
00:09:05He walked a couple of batters in this inning.
00:09:07He gets Max Muncy looking.
00:09:10And then next batter, Andy Pajas.
00:09:14Grounds out to end it.
00:09:16Michael King's nine strikeouts were the most he's had in any game since last April.
00:09:21Dodgers shut out for just the second time this season.
00:09:24Padres win 1-0 at Petko.
00:09:28Yeah, one run was all San Diego needed.
00:09:30The only offense in the first inning.
00:09:32It was enough to catapult the Padres.
00:09:34Look at this.
00:09:35In the first place in the West.
00:09:36The Dodgers have won this division 12 of the last 13 years.
00:09:40But for now, after game one of the series, San Diego in the driver's seat.
00:10:10Let's go.
00:10:11Let's go.
00:10:11Let's go.
00:10:12Let's go.
00:10:12Let's go.
00:10:12Is when you kick the shark and it just flies.
00:10:14And it's going to be 90-something degrees today.
00:10:18We might actually need to go to the beach today.
00:10:20We might.
00:10:21However, in three days, it will be 56 degrees.
00:10:24Why do you have to go there?
00:10:25I'm not worried about three days from now.
00:10:27I'm a glass-half-full kind of gal.
00:10:28If you were looking for offense, D. Ro, in this Padres-Dodgers game, you were disappointed.
00:10:32If you were looking for pitching, it was a gem.
00:10:35And Michael King in the center of it all.
00:10:37Michael King's fantastic.
00:10:38He's fantastic.
00:10:39Michael King has so many weapons.
00:10:41We're going to have CY, Chris Young, come on.
00:10:43We're going to discuss Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz.
00:10:46I don't know how he would feel facing Michael King.
00:10:48Michael King is my worst nightmare.
00:10:52Why?
00:10:53Because I didn't like the two-seam slider combination.
00:10:56I didn't like the Brandon Webbs of the world.
00:10:59I didn't like those guys boring the two-seamer in on your hand, changing planes.
00:11:03I didn't care if you threw a four-seam curveball changeup because it held its plane.
00:11:07You could throw it as hard as you want.
00:11:08But when you start turning, and I've said it a million times, 17 inches to cover into 22,
00:11:15we got a lot going on there.
00:11:17And I want to give love to Michael King because he was fabulous.
00:11:20We've chronicled Yamamoto a ton in our deep dives and on the skybox.
00:11:24I wanted to give this guy his flowers.
00:11:26Bring up the first board.
00:11:28ERA leader since August 24th of 2023.
00:11:32It's the big boys.
00:11:33It's Scooble.
00:11:34It's Skeens.
00:11:35It's Sale.
00:11:35It's Wheeler.
00:11:36It's Sanchez.
00:11:37It's Yamamoto.
00:11:38It's Michael King.
00:11:40Do yourself a favor, man.
00:11:42It's sinker.
00:11:43It's changeup.
00:11:44It's wipeout sweeper.
00:11:46It's four-seamer.
00:11:48And that's what I want to focus on.
00:11:50He gives you a lot of weapons to have to cover.
00:11:53But something that was interesting last night, you almost get into a pattern facing him that
00:12:00you're expecting movement.
00:12:01If he throws a two-seamer, you're expecting it to dance.
00:12:06You're expecting his sweeper to dance.
00:12:08His changeup to plummet off the table.
00:12:11And what happens?
00:12:11Run that back.
00:12:13You're waiting for it.
00:12:14Once this ball's released, Will Smith is like, this has got to cut away or sink back to me.
00:12:20What was interesting last night is on occasion he would blast this four-seamer on the corner
00:12:26and get strike three, like almost shock and awe.
00:12:30Here he is against Max Muncy.
00:12:32High sweeper.
00:12:34Run that pitch back for me.
00:12:36How many people, I know you're not sitting on a 1-0 sweeper, but how many people are thinking,
00:12:42I was at home, if this box is not on that TV, Max Muncy thinks this is a ball out
00:12:48of the hand.
00:12:51It's got to sweep inside off the plate.
00:12:54No, it catches a piece and it's 1-1.
00:12:56He elevates the heater.
00:12:58He goes nasty, breaking ball down.
00:13:00He can throw anything he wants right here.
00:13:02He goes backdoor.
00:13:03We get the challenge and we get the punch out.
00:13:06I'm going to take you to Max Muncy's next A.B.
00:13:11Change up.
00:13:13Change up.
00:13:15Maybe something sweeper.
00:13:16Nope.
00:13:17Again, four-seamer that he's waiting for it to either duck, dart, or dive to get off the plate for
00:13:23a ball.
00:13:24And he was able to do that all night.
00:13:26I thought it was super interesting him incorporating, because he's a guy that makes the ball dance,
00:13:32just pounding that four-seamer when he needed to and kind of confusing the hitters.
00:13:36Highest called strike percentage in whip rate since the start of 2024.
00:13:43You got the nasty guys up there, right?
00:13:45You got Scoble, you got Sale, Sonny Gray, Lizardo, Taylor Glass now, and Michael King.
00:13:51He gets a lot of takes.
00:13:53You go into the at-bat against Michael King, wanting to see shape and movement.
00:13:59And then what happens is he turns 17 inches into 22, and then all of a sudden, I'll throw this
00:14:05nasty four-seamer and lock you up.
00:14:08It was very interesting.
00:14:09But his bread and butter for me, he stands on the first base side of the mound.
00:14:14He wants to let that sinker bore in on right-handers.
00:14:17But something to me that's super interesting, and we're going to bring up a splatter here in a second,
00:14:23is the fact that against lefties, he's throwing this sinker-change-up combination that is absolutely dirty.
00:14:31Run that pitch back right there.
00:14:33Look at the movement on this pitch.
00:14:36Freddie sits right down Broadway and tries to hit a line drive over the shortstop's head.
00:14:43Watch him make him dance in this at-bat.
00:14:46From change-up to sweeper, this stuff is just nasty and off the barrel.
00:14:54You know, I went to Nays last night.
00:14:56I was like, who has got the biggest horizontal difference in their sinker and sweeper?
00:15:02And it's Nolan McLean with the Mets.
00:15:04I would have thought he would have been up there on the board, too.
00:15:07He's kind of middle of the road.
00:15:08It does not play like that on TV.
00:15:11Highest run value on an off-speed pitch.
00:15:14He's on the board with the change-up.
00:15:15Do we have the splatter?
00:15:17I want people to see this because we've never had this.
00:15:20We're hitting right here.
00:15:22This is him coming at us.
00:15:24What's the one thing you notice about this board?
00:15:27This is the way his pitches kind of deviate and break and dart and dive.
00:15:31One thing, the only thing you have to focus on, his change-up and his sinker are absolutely on top
00:15:38of each other.
00:15:38You do not see that often.
00:15:40It's the perfect tunneling of two pitches.
00:15:43He has been fantastic for this team.
00:15:45I thought he was awesome last night.
00:15:48Michael King just doesn't get enough love.
00:15:50I think he's starting to.
00:15:52Okay.
00:15:521-0 game.
00:15:54A lot of great defense last night in this game.
00:15:56Let's get into it real quick.
00:15:59The catchers.
00:16:01Rodolfo.
00:16:02Behind the dish right there.
00:16:04Just throwing absolute peas to second base.
00:16:07Not only did he steal the call right there for strike three.
00:16:12Perfect.
00:16:13Just absolute pop time sitting in that 1-8, 1-9 range.
00:16:18Something you need to know, too.
00:16:20How he leads the guy up the line.
00:16:23When I came up in the big leagues, we were taught to straddle the bag.
00:16:27The ball is going to move quicker than you going to get it and then pulling it back and presenting
00:16:33it.
00:16:33You're not seeing that in today's game.
00:16:36You're seeing everybody take the throw in front of the bag.
00:16:39If anything, with a little two-seam tail so they can tag in front of the bag and almost get
00:16:47the ABS, not the ABS challenge, the challenge of hitting the guy on the tush or the back foot before
00:16:53he gets his hand in.
00:16:55Same thing with Will Smith.
00:16:56He threw a guy out.
00:16:57I want to give Gavin Sheets some love right there.
00:17:00Huge play in a 1-0 game.
00:17:03And why am I giving Gavin Sheets love?
00:17:05He didn't get any knocks last night.
00:17:07But over his last seven games, he's hitting .526 with four bombs and eight RBIs.
00:17:15And I think we forget how good Mookie Betts is.
00:17:19He's been nicked up.
00:17:20But the bottom line is, for me, this is a six-time Gold Glove winner out in right field.
00:17:26And he was able to post up, go to shortstop, and make it look easy.
00:17:31I mean, he makes it look easy over there.
00:17:33All right, let's go to the next one.
00:17:36Let's give Mason Miller some love.
00:17:38Coming out of the bullpen, Petco.
00:17:42A.J. Preller's created stars out there in scenes.
00:17:46He's coming out to corn.
00:17:49Absolutely awesome.
00:17:51The whole environment changes when he comes in.
00:17:55And he's been on one of the most historic runs.
00:17:58Just unhittable stuff.
00:18:00And the slider.
00:18:02The ability.
00:18:04I know he throws a changeup, too.
00:18:05But this slider with a buck-o-one, buck-o-two, it's just too much.
00:18:09Mason Miller, last 43 games.
00:18:13ERA's a .4 innings, 46 strikeout percentage, 57% are getting punched.
00:18:21Look at this.
00:18:22Highest among all pitch types on his slider, 58.2 whiff percentage.
00:18:27Zero extra base hits allowed.
00:18:29Most pitches thrown in big leagues without allowing an extra base hit.
00:18:32He's thrown 650 sliders, and nobody has thrown a long dart on the line for a double.
00:18:40Opponents' first slider since the start of 2025.
00:18:43Five for 74.
00:18:45So just two quick A.B.s, and we'll end this, Devin.
00:18:48Watch the nastiness of this slider.
00:18:52It's whoop, bang.
00:18:54It's not on plane and rolling into the zone.
00:18:57This is Will Smith, one of the best hitters in the game.
00:19:01Full battle mode.
00:19:02You don't see him check swings like that.
00:19:05And he's able to put a ball into the outfield for a can of corn for Jackson Merrill.
00:19:09They can advance.
00:19:11Wipe out breaking ball.
00:19:13100 miles an hour.
00:19:15Wipe out breaking ball to one of the better postseason hitters of all time in Max Muncy.
00:19:21So, great pitchers duel last night.
00:19:24Michael King was fantastic.
00:19:25The catchers were on display throwing guys out, and then the game was over.
00:19:30And Mason, actually, first two dudes, he walked, and it looked a little hairy.
00:19:35They had a mound visit.
00:19:36He righted the ship.
00:19:37Game over.
00:19:38He's faced 167 consecutive batters without allowing an extra base hit.
00:19:42That is the longest streak in the majors since your boy Wade Davis did it back from 2013 to 2014.
00:19:49That is quite a run.
00:19:50Dodgers, Padres again tonight.
00:19:52Emmett Sheehan, Griffin Canning.
00:19:54All right, we're just getting started.
00:19:55Lauren out at Ballpark Canby in Atlanta, and we've got a lot more show.
00:19:59Coming up next, J.P.
00:19:59Rossi has the latest on the status of two of the game's best.
00:20:05Garrett Cole, baby.
00:20:06And Blake Snell.
00:20:07What's their timeline to return to action?
00:20:10And then later...
00:20:19Colt Emerson's family missed his major league debut Sunday.
00:20:26They didn't miss his first homer last night.
00:20:28Coming up, the Mariners rookie sparks a much-needed win for the M's.
00:20:32We're on the express train a bit later.
00:20:34And in the hole later, we're breaking down three of the hottest hitters in the game right now,
00:20:39including a pair of teammates in Tampa and maybe an emerging star in the nation's capital.
00:20:46You're watching MLB Central on a Tuesday.
00:20:49Full re-air Tuesday, by the way.
00:20:50Full re-air?
00:20:51Yeah.
00:20:52How do we feel about the big dive?
00:20:54These were very nice.
00:20:55All right.
00:20:55Excellent.
00:20:56Excellent work.
00:21:03MLB Central is presented by Blue Buffalo.
00:21:10We love to know timelines with injuries, J.P. Morosi.
00:21:13And the picture becoming very clear with Garrett Cole.
00:21:16Good Tuesday morning to you.
00:21:17That's good news because sometimes I feel like the Yankees don't tell us timelines
00:21:20because they don't want to create expectations, right?
00:21:24But he hit 99.6 in AAA.
00:21:26Now what?
00:21:27For Garrett Cole.
00:21:27Good morning.
00:21:28Right, Lauren.
00:21:2999 miles an hour.
00:21:30That tells you all you need to know about the timeline.
00:21:34When you are in the zone at 99, that says exactly right.
00:21:37You are ready.
00:21:39And that was the case for number 45, Garrett Cole, with Brian Hoek's most recent story
00:21:45at MLB.com saying that Aaron Boone believes it is on the table for Cole's next outing to be
00:21:53in the major leagues in the major leagues during the current homestand.
00:21:57And this is the important detail here.
00:21:59The Yankees are in that group of teams that has very consistently had to go on regular rest
00:22:07with their starting pitchers.
00:22:09Of course, the most recent development there for the Yankees being the injury to Max Fried.
00:22:13So they've been one of the teams that has not had the luxury of giving their starters extra rest.
00:22:18They haven't played that great over the last 10 days or so.
00:22:22So when you consider that and the way the standings look and the way the Rays have been playing
00:22:26lately, my goodness.
00:22:27And then the results for Cole in the minor leagues, it all converges on the reality that Garrett Cole's
00:22:33season debut could be happening this week.
00:22:36Wow.
00:22:37Maybe this homestand we will see number 45.
00:22:40Wouldn't that be something for Yankee fans?
00:22:41Just two weeks ago, JP, we learned that Tarek Skubel would have surgery to repair loose bodies
00:22:46in the elbow.
00:22:47And now we're hearing similar procedure for Blake Snell.
00:22:50What does that mean for the recovery, the timeline?
00:22:52It's quicker than thought.
00:22:54Yes?
00:22:55Yes, Lauren, it is.
00:22:57It is the nanoscope procedure, a new innovation.
00:23:00It is always fascinating to see how the innovations of medicine converge with sports.
00:23:05Oh, my gosh.
00:23:06Alexis is waiting to weigh in on this.
00:23:08And by the way, any chance I get to mention the great Connor Hellebuck on MLB Network, I
00:23:14am going to do it.
00:23:15Of course, November 2025, Hellebuck has the nanoscope procedure on his torn knee meniscus.
00:23:21A few months later, he is backstopping Team USA to a gold medal at the Milan Olympics.
00:23:27Tarek Skubel, so encouraged are the Tigers.
00:23:30Skubel threw a bullpen session at fairly high intensity this week.
00:23:35And then Blake Snell should be back.
00:23:37The Dodgers hope early on in the second half if everything goes according to plan.
00:23:43So, Snell, of course, Lauren, just one start for him in the major leagues this year and
00:23:49then back on the I.L.
00:23:50just wasn't able to get comfortable with that elbow situation.
00:23:54So, again, the nanoscope, the ideal thing with this, and Skubel spoke about this with
00:23:59reporters, including Jason Beck this week in Detroit, that if it's a minimal amount of
00:24:05of loose bodies that have to be cleaned out of the elbow, the nanoscope is very conducive
00:24:10to it and it can help you get back more quickly.
00:24:14So, that part is good news for the Dodgers.
00:24:15But I'll make this point big picture on L.A.
00:24:19Almost every single game they've had this season, Lauren, their starter has had more than the
00:24:25traditional standard four days of rest.
00:24:28Used to be every fifth day.
00:24:29Well, the Dodgers, it's almost always every sixth day, Yamamoto, Sasaki, Otani, they almost
00:24:35always get bonus rest.
00:24:37It makes it a lot harder to achieve that with Snell now going back on the I.L.
00:24:41to join Tyler Glass now as well.
00:24:44And it's been a luxury for the Dodgers.
00:24:46Can it continue?
00:24:47Your wife, the real Dr. Morosi, would be so happy about this surgery talk on MLB Central.
00:24:52She would also give us a good report on Ronald Acuna Jr. off the injured list.
00:24:56When will we see him, JP?
00:24:58The plan is today, Lauren.
00:25:00So, certainly great news for the first place.
00:25:02Atlanta Braves, they get even better as Acuna returns to the lineup.
00:25:07Now, he was actually active yesterday.
00:25:10Was not needed.
00:25:11It was a lopsided game that got away early from the Braves.
00:25:14But the Braves have been quite deliberate and careful on making sure Acuna gets all the
00:25:21rest he needs with this hamstring injury.
00:25:23And, again, it becomes a lot easier to do that when the overall lineup is producing as it is.
00:25:30Olsen having a great year.
00:25:31Yastrumpsey contributing in a huge way.
00:25:33Harris having a resurgence season in the outfield as well.
00:25:36So, now we should expect Acuna on most days, Lauren, to be back there playing right field,
00:25:42but, of course, in the very same ballpark as Parla Paredes wrote at MLB.com,
00:25:47in the very same ballpark where he won the World Baseball Classic less than two months ago.
00:25:53So, some great memories for Ronald there in South Florida as he returns to the Braves lineup this afternoon.
00:25:59I'm back for the first place, Atlanta Braves.
00:26:01Watch out, Dr. Dero.
00:26:02Dr. Morosi is in the house.
00:26:04Very good stuff.
00:26:05He's coming.
00:26:06He's bringing up the WBC.
00:26:08I know.
00:26:09I know.
00:26:09I know.
00:26:10We got it.
00:26:10We got it.
00:26:11Cut his mic.
00:26:12Just cut his mic.
00:26:13Cut his mic.
00:26:14Part of the bio.
00:26:16Hey, we got a tweet from our John Heyman.
00:26:21This is breaking news into MLB Network.
00:26:23Once again, I'm the only one in the exit row who even picked up the safety card,
00:26:27even though the other five all affirmed they would help in the event of an emergency.
00:26:33I simply cannot trust my five-
00:26:35Wait, what's the safety card?
00:26:37It's the laminated card to let you know what you've got to do in the emergency exit row.
00:26:41But listen, if it's up to us surviving and John Heyman's the reason why, we're perishing.
00:26:49Know that.
00:26:51All right.
00:26:52Hey, speaking of the Atlanta Braves, they got the Briggs beat off them yesterday by the Marlins.
00:26:58And the NL East is arguably the most competitive division in baseball.
00:27:03Coming up, Dero takes a closer look at the division as a whole
00:27:05and why sometimes it's tough to distinguish between spoiler and contender.
00:27:12Stay with us.
00:27:13All right.
00:27:22Express train.
00:27:23Here we go.
00:27:24Three boxes.
00:27:24Lawrence at Ballpark Cam in Atlanta.
00:27:26Dero's here.
00:27:27I'm here.
00:27:27White Sox Mariners there.
00:27:29Julio Rodriguez, past month or so, slugging 532, 284 batting average.
00:27:36This home run makes it 1-0.
00:27:38Oh, hey, guy in blue right there.
00:27:39Thank you for your service, sir.
00:27:41Josh Naylor, RBI knock, makes it 3-0.
00:27:45But.
00:27:45Colt Emerson.
00:27:46How about this, Lauren?
00:27:47Colt Emerson.
00:27:49His family didn't get enough time to get to the ballpark Sunday for his debut.
00:27:54But they were there last night for his first career homer.
00:27:58I thought that as parents, how much it killed them.
00:28:01But the timing just wasn't right.
00:28:03But they were there for the main event.
00:28:05Awesome.
00:28:05Youngest Mariner player to hit a homer since your boy Jose Lopez back in September of 2004.
00:28:12Okay.
00:28:13First meeting.
00:28:13Brewers look good.
00:28:15Yeah.
00:28:15First meeting between the Cubs and Brewers.
00:28:17Christian Yelich hit off the scoreboard here.
00:28:19Yeah, they beat up on him.
00:28:21They sure did.
00:28:22They sure did.
00:28:22Where's our boy Jake Bowers?
00:28:24Well, he's right here.
00:28:25We've been trying to tell the world.
00:28:26He needs to be in the lineup every day.
00:28:28I was looking at his average.
00:28:29He's almost at 300, D-Row.
00:28:31You know, left.
00:28:32He's just turned himself.
00:28:32He is a testament of hard work, finding the right spot, someone believing in you.
00:28:37This one, it goes over the scoreboard.
00:28:39This ball's killed.
00:28:40Yeah.
00:28:42Yelich has homered in back-to-back games for the first time since last August.
00:28:46Brewers starting pitching a figure away piece of together.
00:28:49Brendan Sproat was an out away from qualifying for the win, but was taken out with two outs
00:28:55in the fifth inning.
00:28:56Pat Murphy letting them know.
00:28:57Mets Nationals, Juan Soto against his former team.
00:29:00This game was crazy.
00:29:03Mets take a 4-3 lead in the fifth.
00:29:06Then Bo Bichette in the seventh.
00:29:09His third home run since, or his first home run since late April makes it 5-3.
00:29:15Robert, I was so happy to see Carlos Mendoza be able to get on the other side of all that
00:29:21nonsense in the beginning of the year and be able to answer questions in a good way.
00:29:24Yeah, they're playing much better.
00:29:28The Mets became the first team since 1983 to score at least 10 runs in a single extra inning.
00:29:36That game was, that score is not indicative.
00:29:39I was watching that thing.
00:29:40It was all, that game was close and all over the place.
00:29:42All right, this game was not close, and a surprising result here.
00:29:46Braves, Marlins, Joe Mack, return of the Mack.
00:29:49He had a big day at the plate.
00:29:50Plates 1-2 here, makes it 3-0.
00:29:53And then Javier Sanoa, his first career Grand Slam, first homer of the year.
00:30:01It's 11-0.
00:30:02And then Lauren, friend of the program, Xavier Edwards.
00:30:06He follows that up.
00:30:08They go back to back.
00:30:09The Marlins came in losing 9-14, and then you heard J.P. Marossi.
00:30:13They were going to use Ronald, but they decided not to because of the lopsided loss.
00:30:17That's a career high in homers for Edwards.
00:30:20Yeah.
00:30:20And here we are in late May.
00:30:21Marlins win big 12-0.
00:30:24Philadelphia Phillies able to gain a game on the Braves because they held on to beat the Reds.
00:30:29Alec Boehm with a solo homer, and the Phillies take a 3-2 lead.
00:30:33This is good to see.
00:30:35South Stewart kind of started quick, then hit a slump, and maybe he's busting out of it.
00:30:41A couple of hits last night, including a homer to tie it at three.
00:30:43But a guy that you said at the beginning of May that you think is going to get hot, Bryson
00:30:48Stott, a two-run homer here.
00:30:51He has an OPS of 895 homers in 17 games in the month of May.
00:30:57And the Phillies win.
00:30:59Did they win five?
00:31:00The Phillies are 25-23.
00:31:03Look at that.
00:31:03They've won 8-10, seven games back in the National League East.
00:31:07And Robert said at D-Ro, about a month ago, we asked you, what needs to change for the Phillies?
00:31:11And you said, I'd like to see the Boehm's and the Stott's get going.
00:31:16And last night, you saw what happens when they're kind of in the middle of it all.
00:31:20Kyle Schwarber has an illness, and they kind of took center stage, and it was a good result.
00:31:25He's just sick, I think.
00:31:26I just wanted to broad brush the NL East, because out of the gate, the Braves went on this meteoric
00:31:32run
00:31:32and kind of walked away from everybody.
00:31:35And then it was like, who's getting fired with the New York Mets?
00:31:39And who did get fired with the Philadelphia Phillies?
00:31:42And it's like, everybody, take a deep breath.
00:31:45We got to the quarter pole now, and let's reassess the NL East.
00:31:49We knew the Phillies were not going to go anywhere, and we're eventually going to get hot.
00:31:54The name's on the back of the jersey.
00:31:55It's just too much.
00:31:57But I think what put it over the top is once Wheeler came back, and now seeing how good he
00:32:05looks,
00:32:05to pair him with Christopher Sanchez, and if you were watching the game last night,
00:32:10Johan Duran is throwing 100-mile-an-hour bowling balls coming out for the ninth inning.
00:32:14He hit like 102.
00:32:16And then if Stott and Boehm, let's give Boehm some love.
00:32:20He's got three straight multi-hit games.
00:32:21He's 15 for his last 35 with three home runs.
00:32:24They need him.
00:32:25I don't think he's a stock, everyday four-hole hitter for the Phillies.
00:32:30I don't think he wants to necessarily do that.
00:32:32But that's what he's going to be asked to do in this lineup.
00:32:35They just need him to be some good version of himself.
00:32:40You can run some B-roll if you want, Deb, and talk about it.
00:32:43But I think the Phillies are super interesting for me, right?
00:32:47I like their bullpen.
00:32:48I think the numbers were skewed at the beginning of the year.
00:32:51I think the Brad Kellers of the world right to ship.
00:32:54Sanchez is as good as it gets, like I said.
00:32:56A lot of veteran presence in that clubhouse and in that dugout.
00:32:59So I don't expect them to go anywhere and be a playoff team and push for it.
00:33:04Again, NL East is super interesting.
00:33:08The Marlins, the Braves ran away, go down.
00:33:12They just took on the Cubs and the Dodgers.
00:33:15Played great baseball.
00:33:16I watched them take two or three against Boston.
00:33:19And then they walked down to Miami.
00:33:20And what does Miami do?
00:33:23They beat the Brake off them last night.
00:33:26So I wanted to give them a little love, too.
00:33:30You got Alex Baum right here and Bryson Stott.
00:33:34Yeah, I think the thing about the Phillies is they dug themselves such a deep hole.
00:33:39But they're not going to be.
00:33:41No, seven games is nothing right now.
00:33:42Let's not concern ourselves about the division now.
00:33:44Let's just, we're above .500 and now we go.
00:33:47And the change with Don Mattingly as the manager has been remarkable.
00:33:50It's been huge.
00:33:50Yeah, I think it was a wake-up call to the players, right, to watch a great man walk out
00:33:54the door and lose his job.
00:33:56Yeah.
00:33:56It was time for them to look in the mirror.
00:33:58I think on the flip side here with the Marlins, I want to give them some love because I think
00:34:03everybody views them as they'll be a nice spoiler piece in the NL East as the season goes on.
00:34:08There is a lot of talent where I don't think they're going to go anyway or they're going to try
00:34:11and fight for a wild card.
00:34:13Max Meyer has turned the corner with his career.
00:34:16All right?
00:34:16He has been really good.
00:34:18And then, from an offensive standpoint, Liam Hicks leads MLB with 42 RBIs.
00:34:24Xavier Edwards, like you said, Robert, set a career high with five home runs in 48 games.
00:34:29And something that kind of caught my eye last night, Joe Mack, we do those spring breakout games.
00:34:35Two years ago, got a chance to be down there as they took on the Cardinals in a spring breakout
00:34:39game and talked to Joe Mack around the cage.
00:34:41What an unbelievable dude.
00:34:43And to watch him come up bases loaded yesterday and kind of have that.
00:34:47You need a signature moment early when you come up.
00:34:51He could have easily popped up or punched out.
00:34:53Nope.
00:34:54He threw a bullet out there.
00:34:55Two ribbies.
00:34:56Keep the drain rolling.
00:34:57And they go.
00:34:58Mets, everything that could go wrong in the beginning did go wrong.
00:35:03It's still not 100% right with the injury to Clay Holmes and not having Lindor.
00:35:09But when you put eyeballs on them, there's been an influx of youth.
00:35:15Yes.
00:35:15Carson Benj and A.J. Ewing have certainly helped kind of instill some youthful energy.
00:35:23I still think Brett Beatty throws out good A.B.'s.
00:35:27I'd like to see him get absolutely on fire.
00:35:32They're not going to go anywhere either.
00:35:3421 and 26.
00:35:35So they're going to fight to get back to 500.
00:35:37Ultimately, I just think that the chemistry of how it's built there is a little off.
00:35:43But the NL East is a bear.
00:35:45Oh, it is competitive from top to bottom.
00:35:48And Washington scores the most runs per night.
00:35:50They do.
00:35:52John Heyman reporting just this morning that Nick Morbido is going to be called up by the Mets.
00:35:58So another young outfielder coming in to maybe infuse even more energy there for the New York Mets.
00:36:05By the way, Chase Burns goes against Jesus Lozardo tonight in Philadelphia.
00:36:09That is a good pitching matchup.
00:36:11Here's what's coming up next.
00:36:14Shot to right field and the Cardinals win it.
00:36:17Pozo's first.
00:36:18Get to first.
00:36:19Well, he did.
00:36:20And the Redbirds walk it off five to four.
00:36:24Man, that gets me fired up.
00:36:25Coming up next, we're going to be joined by Cardinals broadcaster Chip Carey.
00:36:29What does he make of this surprising Cardinals team?
00:36:32And the fact that he's got two sons following in his footsteps in the family business.
00:36:38Chip Carey set to join us on the other side.
00:36:41Stay with us.
00:36:45Welcome back to MLB Central presented by Blue Buffalo.
00:37:07Step up to the mic at the segment where we get a chance to visit with broadcasters all across the
00:37:12league.
00:37:12As Ballpark Tam takes us to St. Louis, where tonight the Cardinals begin a very interesting series against the Pittsburgh
00:37:20Pirates.
00:37:20Mitch Keller, Matthew Libertor.
00:37:22That is your pitching matchup.
00:37:25745 Eastern, 645 local.
00:37:29Chip Carey always has a good seat for the Cardinals games.
00:37:31And he joins us now here on MLB Central.
00:37:34Chip, thank you very much for the time.
00:37:35How do you explain what's going on with the Cardinals right now?
00:37:41These are young kids that are finally getting a chance to show what they can do at this level.
00:37:45And opportunity leads to success.
00:37:49Success leads to more confidence.
00:37:51And confidence leads to being a game and a half or a game out of first place.
00:37:55These guys have been highly rated prospects for a long time.
00:37:59Certainly in the case of Jordan Walker, who could be the comeback player of the year and is an MVP
00:38:03candidate this season for the Cardinals.
00:38:06A lot of these guys and men's talent is finally showing through at the right time.
00:38:09And, you know, sometimes the baseball guys just tap you on the shoulder and say, it's time for you guys
00:38:14to be competitive again.
00:38:15And that's exactly what St. Louis has been in all facets of the game.
00:38:19They hit.
00:38:19They hit for power, which is really surprising.
00:38:21Our starting staff has a 7-3 ERA in the month of May.
00:38:25And from opening day on, they've caught just about everything hit their way.
00:38:28So, in those three big fundamental facets of the game, the Cardinals are doing everything Olly Marble hoped they would
00:38:34this spring.
00:38:34And they've kept it up.
00:38:37That's who I want to talk about, Chip.
00:38:39Because you talk about the confidence on the field.
00:38:41I'm seeing the confidence in the dugout.
00:38:43I'm seeing the confidence post-game press conference with Olly Marble.
00:38:46Known him a long time.
00:38:48He went through a lot of guff early on.
00:38:52And now it seems like he's come out on the other side.
00:38:54They're playing his brand of ball.
00:38:56He's walking around.
00:38:57Can you take me inside your interactions with him?
00:39:00Well, we see Olly every day.
00:39:01I think you're exactly right, D. Rowan.
00:39:03You know what makes a great manager.
00:39:05Great players or players playing great, right?
00:39:07And I think we'd all agree that the last three years in St. Louis, the Cardinals had some really good
00:39:12players who didn't have good seasons.
00:39:14And that's tough on any manager.
00:39:16And the fact that the Cardinals are where they are, I think, speaks a lot to how Olly runs his
00:39:20clubhouse.
00:39:21How hard this coaching staff works.
00:39:23They are immensely prepared.
00:39:24There's not a situation that comes up that they don't anticipate having a move to counter or to take advantage
00:39:31of.
00:39:31But you're right.
00:39:32People in town forget that Oliver Marble in his first year won 93 games here in St. Louis.
00:39:37Who did he have?
00:39:37Albert Kuhls, Adam Wainwright, and Yadier Molina.
00:39:41He didn't have that luxury the last three seasons here with the Cardinals, yet here we are above 500.
00:39:46And he's above 500.
00:39:48And I'll remind folks who are watching your show, Tony La Russa, one of the greatest managers in the history
00:39:53of the game, has gone down as one of the great managers of the St. Louis Cardinals as well.
00:39:57Oliver Marble in his first four years at the helm in St. Louis has more wins than Tony La Russa
00:40:02did in his first four years as a manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.
00:40:06And that's with some clubs that, quite frankly, weren't up to Cardinals standards.
00:40:09So he has gotten the most out of what he has, and now he's doing, Mark, the most important part.
00:40:14He's creating, he's building, and he's nurturing a culture and bringing back the Cardinal way with all the analytic advantages
00:40:21that the organizational investments have been made in.
00:40:23So it's really an exciting time.
00:40:25And sometimes that culture needs something to latch onto.
00:40:29Every successful team needs something to spur them on.
00:40:33Maybe it's a good luck charm.
00:40:35But what happened over the weekend in St. Louis, where a group of kids from East Texas who were in
00:40:42nearby St. Louis or in the area for a baseball tournament, this is the club baseball tournament, they turned right
00:40:50field into a huge party.
00:40:52And it spurred something with the team.
00:40:55Have you, do you recall seeing anything like this?
00:40:58Not like that, no.
00:41:00And it was so organic.
00:41:01That was the best part of it.
00:41:02The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks were playing in the Division II club baseball tournament across the river in Alton, Illinois.
00:41:09And they decided to come to the ballpark.
00:41:11And it started with 16 kids, 16 college kids who have a love affair with baseball.
00:41:16And they came in and started waving shirts and doing the college chants and ball two, ball two, strike three,
00:41:21strike, all that kind of stuff.
00:41:23And our crowd went nuts for it.
00:41:25And it's so fun and so organic.
00:41:26It felt like Bush Stadium in the old days.
00:41:28The way I've described it is this cross between an English premier soccer game, a college baseball game, and a
00:41:36college frat party before a Saturday football game in the SEC.
00:41:40It really was fun.
00:41:42And for our state laid-back audience, I think it was a great shock to the system.
00:41:46Ollie had them in the locker room after the game on Saturday.
00:41:49He was buying tickets for the Saturday and Sunday games as well.
00:41:53And I think it's a jolt of energy that, frankly, our organization has needed, and our players have fed off
00:41:57it.
00:41:57As I said, Jordan Walker stepped out of the boxers are laughing about it.
00:42:01They've ripped off the Yankees' roll call.
00:42:03They're starting to clap for our players and wait for them to wave to them in the upper right field
00:42:07deck at Bush Stadium.
00:42:09So it's really, really fun.
00:42:11That's what baseball is supposed to be about.
00:42:13And I hope it's something that continues the rest of the summer.
00:42:16Hey, Chip, who's caught your eye?
00:42:17I know you can't have a bias, but when I turn on the Cardinals, you can fall in love with
00:42:21a lot of different guys.
00:42:23Weatherholt, Herrera, Walker.
00:42:25I could take you to the outfield with church-making plays.
00:42:27Who's the guy that kind of you lean towards a little bit?
00:42:31I'm going to give you an under-the-radar candidate, and it's because he doesn't do anything that StatCast would
00:42:36tell you would make him successful,
00:42:38and that's Michael McGreevy.
00:42:39This guy knows how to pitch.
00:42:41He is a pitchmaker.
00:42:43He throws any pitch in any count, in any situation, in any spot in the strike zone.
00:42:47Freddie Freeman, when the Dodgers were in town, gave him the ultimate compliment.
00:42:50He said, in today's game, if a guy has two or three pitches, you can eliminate a quadrant and go
00:42:54to work if you find a pitch in that zone.
00:42:57With McGreevy, that's not the case.
00:42:59He is unflappable.
00:43:00He knows how to pitch.
00:43:01He doesn't throw particularly hard.
00:43:03But what I like about him is his non-presence.
00:43:05You never know if he's up to or down to in the middle innings of a very, very important game.
00:43:11He's a super smart kid.
00:43:13Mom and dad are in the legal profession.
00:43:14He's got a brother in law school, and in his first full year as a major leaguer, he's our team
00:43:18player rep.
00:43:19So he's just off-the-chart smart, off-the-chart great, great kid, and a guy that I really enjoy
00:43:25pitching because, as I said,
00:43:27he doesn't have the Jacob Mizorowski 103-mile-an-hour fastball.
00:43:31And to this point, he hasn't needed it.
00:43:33Yeah.
00:43:33What did you have for breakfast?
00:43:35I haven't had breakfast yet.
00:43:36Just coffee.
00:43:37I've got to go get a haircut.
00:43:38What do you think?
00:43:38Hey, you've got luscious locks, Chip.
00:43:41Did you get a haircut on an empty stomach?
00:43:44Well, you know, maybe you can get a little something on the way out.
00:43:47We're out of time, Chip, but I know you're extremely proud of your two identical twins that are in the
00:43:54family business.
00:43:55So whenever I see them with you, I can see the pride that emanates from you, just how proud you
00:44:02are of both of them,
00:44:04now that they're kind of following in the family footsteps.
00:44:06You're very kind.
00:44:08I really appreciate that.
00:44:09Unfortunately, that's all we're qualified to say.
00:44:11We can say ground ball to second, or as my dad used to say, D-Row hits into another double
00:44:15play, five, four, three.
00:44:18You know, we're really, really lucky.
00:44:21This is the family business, as it were, and they've really earned these opportunities on merit.
00:44:25Yeah, the last name has helped them, but their talent shines through.
00:44:28And as good as they are behind the mic, the thing that makes me proudest and my wife, Susan, proudest
00:44:33is the fact that they're really, really good people.
00:44:36And I think that's going to serve them well.
00:44:38That's your most important job.
00:44:40Hey, enjoy the ballgame today.
00:44:41Good luck with the haircut.
00:44:43And good luck to the St. Louis Cardinals the rest of the way.
00:44:46You guys are the best.
00:44:47I appreciate you having me on.
00:44:48Have a great day.
00:44:48That's Jeff Carey of the St. Louis Cardinals joining us here as we wrap up our number one here on
00:44:54MLB Central.
00:44:55All right, we've got a lot more to come.
00:44:57Is he going Kentucky Waterfall?
00:44:58No, no.
00:44:59He's much too distinguished for that.
00:45:02I mean, for God's sakes, he's a play-by-play man of the big leagues, sir.
00:45:07Hey, the Rays have the best record in the American League, and these two are a big reason why.
00:45:12Coming up, Chris Young and D-Row taking a closer look at Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz.
00:45:18And why, in the case of Yandy, he's one of D-Row's favorite hitters.
00:45:25And there's a look at CY.
00:45:27What's he going with?
00:45:28Strong hour two, baby.
00:45:29There we go.
00:45:31Let's go.
00:45:31CY, when's the last time you got a head shave?
00:45:34Head shave?
00:45:34This morning.
00:45:35Really?
00:45:36I've got to go daily.
00:45:37I still have a full head of hair up here.
00:45:39Did you go to Nico?
00:45:40Really?
00:45:40I choose not to have this.
00:45:41Did you go to Nico?
00:45:43I did not.
00:45:44I did it myself.
00:45:46Really?
00:45:46So you can grow a full head of hair.
00:45:47Have a whole.
00:45:48Is that like comb over?
00:45:49No.
00:45:52No.
00:45:53The place where I fell asleep inside you.
00:45:56How do I get myself back to you?
00:45:58The place where you said I want to.
00:46:13Welcome to hour number two of MLB Central presented by Blue Buffalo.
00:46:19We're glad you're with us on this Tuesday morning.
00:46:21Lauren Shahadi is in Atlanta at Ballpark Cam.
00:46:24Mark DeRosa, Robert Flores.
00:46:25Chris Young is our plus one.
00:46:26But let's begin this hour front and center and show you what happened in Anaheim.
00:46:31JT Ginn had a no-hitter through eight.
00:46:34And then it evaporated just like that.
00:46:38Adam Frazier with a knock in the ninth.
00:46:40And then Cero Miedo.
00:46:42Zach Neto.
00:46:43A two-run walk-off homer.
00:46:45And just like that, the Angels.
00:46:47There's something very wrong about that.
00:46:49I agree.
00:46:49It's cruel.
00:46:50As you said in hour number one, it's a cruel way to lose the game.
00:46:53JT Ginn was fantastic.
00:46:55Ten strikeouts.
00:46:56But the Angels snapped their six-game losing streak.
00:46:58Jazz Chisholm has been on fire since he started wearing Giancarlo Stanton's pants.
00:47:04And he's using Caballero's bat, too.
00:47:06Well, whatever he's doing, it's working because, yeah, he is nine for 16 with two extra base hits and four
00:47:15RBIs since switching to Giancarlo's pants.
00:47:19Yankees hold on to beat the Blue Jays seven to six.
00:47:21Reds, Phillies, Bryson Stott, a two-run homer.
00:47:25What a month of May it has been for Bryson Stott.
00:47:28Oh, you hit on him yesterday.
00:47:29890 OPS, five homers, 18 RBIs, and 17 games in the month of May.
00:47:34Philly beat the Reds 5-4.
00:47:38Good pitching matchup today in Philly.
00:47:40Chase Burns, Jesus Lozardo.
00:47:42Diamondbacks taking on the San Francisco Giants.
00:47:45And how about Nolan Arenado?
00:47:48He is looking like himself here recently.
00:47:52He hits a grand slam of the first inning off Robbie Ray.
00:47:55And Arenado has some unbelievable lifetime numbers against Robbie Ray, all part of a 12-2 beatdown of the San
00:48:04Francisco Giants in the desert.
00:48:06Rockies, Rangers, beginning a series on Monday.
00:48:09TJ Rumfeld.
00:48:11Oh, what a great catch.
00:48:13Where are your teammates at?
00:48:15And then later, he comes through with an RBI knock.
00:48:20Rockies hang on to win.
00:48:22They jumped out to a big lead.
00:48:24TJ Rumfeld.
00:48:25Oh, man.
00:48:26Toby Rumfeld.
00:48:27You've got to be so proud.
00:48:29My old teammate in Richmond.
00:48:30Our top story in Minneapolis.
00:48:33Astros twins.
00:48:35Josh Bell.
00:48:36Three for four.
00:48:37Two homers.
00:48:38One of them, Tatsuya Imai, who was okay.
00:48:43He got the loss, but there were some positive signs.
00:48:46How long are they going to be the top story?
00:48:48Robert.
00:48:49Forever.
00:48:49Let's talk after the show.
00:48:51I went down a dark path.
00:48:53The Astros, if they want to get creative.
00:48:56Okay.
00:48:57That sounds like a segment for tomorrow, maybe.
00:48:59Guardians.
00:49:00Tigers.
00:49:01Jose Ramirez.
00:49:03Three for four.
00:49:04Two RBI double and a solo homer.
00:49:06Guardians dominate and beat the Tigers 8-2.
00:49:10Red Sox, Royals, Wilson Contreras, a two-run homer.
00:49:16Aroldis Chapman comes in to close it out.
00:49:18Red Sox win 3-1.
00:49:22D-Row, you came away from watching the Red Sox pretty impressed with Wilson Contreras.
00:49:26He has single-handedly won them two ballgames in the last three to four nights.
00:49:32Meantime, the Tampa Bay Rays, goodness gracious, they bust out the whooping stick against the
00:49:40Baltimore Orioles.
00:49:4216 runs, four RBIs each for Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz as the Rays overwhelm the Baltimore
00:49:53Orioles 16-6 in the first meeting between these two rivals this year.
00:49:58And those 16 runs are a season high for runs, hits, and extra base hits.
00:50:03And, Robert, you said it.
00:50:03These guys leading the way.
00:50:05Look at this.
00:50:05Four RBI each for Yandy Diaz and Junior Caminero.
00:50:09And those junior home runs are crushed.
00:50:10And some of them see why the pitcher's throwing a good pitch.
00:50:14It's not a mistake, and he gets to it.
00:50:15How has he become this kind of hitter at 22 years old?
00:50:19You know, he's just athletically gifted, Lauren.
00:50:22When it comes down to it, he's one of the most unique hitters in the game because he has
00:50:28this combination of being able to have the fastest swing in the game, but extremely flat
00:50:34bat path through the zone.
00:50:35And we're going to talk about Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz today.
00:50:40And I saw you and Case, D-Ro, do a breakdown with Caminero about a month ago.
00:50:45And the question was, he was pulling the ball too much at the time.
00:50:48Is he going to be able to be consistent?
00:50:51But when you have the attributes and his play discipline that he's improving on going at
00:50:56at the same time and the bat coming in as violent as it does through the zone consistently, this
00:51:03is a blueprint for long-term success.
00:51:06With Junior Caminero, you're talking about he just overtook Stan.
00:51:11Highest average speed.
00:51:12Stan's always been a dude on top.
00:51:14Almost 80 miles an hour.
00:51:16So you understand that if you're swinging the bat that fast, there's going to be power
00:51:21associated with it.
00:51:23There's going to be some swing and miss from time to time, potentially.
00:51:26But you think of O'Neal Cruz, Jordan Walker has been taking off like a rocket ship this
00:51:30year.
00:51:31Giancarlo Stanton, one of the best sluggers of this generation.
00:51:34Junior Caminero has continued to get better throughout the last couple years.
00:51:39You're talking about a player who had 45 thumps last year, so you understand he set a really
00:51:44big bar for himself.
00:51:46But as you watch pitchers attack him, D-Roy, that's 116 miles an hour right there.
00:51:50You watch pitchers attack him.
00:51:52You hope that he chases.
00:51:54You hope he gets himself in trouble because if he forces you into the zone with the swing
00:52:00that he has, he's coming down flat long through the zone.
00:52:03He's going to make you pay.
00:52:05He can lead anywhere on the yard.
00:52:08And when I think about his path, D-Roy, there's a lot of guys.
00:52:11Were you a flat path guy?
00:52:13I was a flat.
00:52:13I mean, I was top hand coming down through.
00:52:16I would do the drill where you have the high T behind home plate.
00:52:20Really?
00:52:20I'm trying not to hit the T.
00:52:22As I'm swinging, I want my path coming in here.
00:52:26I'm not getting here.
00:52:27I was like the opposite.
00:52:28Junior is that guy.
00:52:30We'll see that later in the tape.
00:52:32But when you come in on that path, what you won't struggle with is the high heater.
00:52:37You're going to be able to hit the high heater because you're used to catching everything
00:52:41out in front and your bat's coming in at the top of the zone.
00:52:46Let's run it.
00:52:48And what stands out to me when you see Aaron Judge is on this list too, D-Roy.
00:52:51So this is not to say that there's one right way to do things.
00:52:56He does things you can't teach.
00:52:58I want people at home to understand it's a wild horse at the plate.
00:53:01I mean, this is right center.
00:53:03You're talking about pitches above the zone when they come in.
00:53:06Dead central.
00:53:08He does not have to cheat on them.
00:53:10Normally, 95 top of the zone, you have to cheat a little bit.
00:53:13Robbie Ray, we just saw this.
00:53:15Wow.
00:53:15As a pitcher, it's such a fine line.
00:53:18If we pause this real quick.
00:53:19It's such a fine line.
00:53:21And I would see this in center field when you had guys who hit like this.
00:53:24And you saw pitchers who tried to elevate on these hitters.
00:53:27It's like, dude, do not miss.
00:53:29Because here, it's not high for him.
00:53:33This is barrel.
00:53:34You've got to get up here.
00:53:35And then you get so high that he's not chasing.
00:53:38So it almost ends up becoming a waste of a pitch.
00:53:42And then when I pay attention to his numbers, understand.
00:53:46He set a really high bar.
00:53:4820-25, you're talking about 45 home runs.
00:53:51What could he improve on?
00:53:52I'm going to focus on the chase, the whiff.
00:53:55He's chasing a little less.
00:53:57Swinging and missing a little less.
00:53:59What ends up happening, the on-base percentage jumps up about 40 points.
00:54:04Walk rates up.
00:54:05Which means he's starting to get more dangerous.
00:54:07And a lot of people assumed his 45 home runs had to play
00:54:12because it was George R. Steinbrenner Field that he's playing in last year.
00:54:15How is that going to translate over back to the trap?
00:54:19He's on pace.
00:54:20He's still going to hit 40-plus homers.
00:54:24And when you think about the swing and miss and the fact that he hits the ball so far out
00:54:29in the front,
00:54:30you're normally going to be susceptible to some breaking balls down.
00:54:33But he's still able to catch those.
00:54:35If you don't throw the perfect breaking ball and he's able to catch it out in front,
00:54:39this ball is jumping.
00:54:40And this is what I was talking to you about, D. Rowe.
00:54:42If I had a tee behind here, if I had a tee sitting right here, his bat is not going
00:54:47to hit that tee.
00:54:48He's not going to hit that tee.
00:54:50He's coming in steep to flat and then through.
00:54:53A lot of hitters, you're going to see that barrel coming in from this angle,
00:54:57and it would hit the top of that bar.
00:54:59Junior is doing it a different way than a lot of guys are doing it right now.
00:55:02And it really reminds me of Albert Pujols.
00:55:05Albert Pujols, I know he stayed back way better than Junior Caminero did.
00:55:09But him and Junior talked about it, and Albert talked to Junior about being as flat as possible.
00:55:15And when you're thinking about swing-tilt-path, to give you a feel of numbers,
00:55:20average is about 33% as far as your degree of tilt that you're going to have on your swing.
00:55:27This is extremely flat.
00:55:29You have two guys, Junior and Yandy, on the same team.
00:55:33I wonder how much influence Yandy has on Caminero when they're in the cage.
00:55:38I would almost want to guarantee you that these two guys work out together
00:55:41because it's a very similar philosophy, although they're trying to achieve different goals
00:55:46and going about it a different way.
00:55:47100%.
00:55:47I thought this was perfect because Caminero, I'm not saying you hit like Caminero,
00:55:52but he can get the head out and pull it.
00:55:54When I watch Yandy Diaz on a nightly basis, I basically feel like I was never as good a hitter
00:56:03as Yandy Diaz is, but I had the same exact, so pause this, I had the same exact approach as
00:56:10him.
00:56:10I know how he's going to get pitched, what he's trying to do with it, and I can walk you
00:56:15through it.
00:56:15And it's crazy.
00:56:16It's all stuff I learned watching video with Chipper Jones and then kind of what's the sinus rhythm to your
00:56:22swing.
00:56:22What do you do well?
00:56:23What do you not do well?
00:56:25What does the pitcher do well?
00:56:26What does he not do well?
00:56:28But bottom line, since 2022, this is one of the better hitters in the game that doesn't get enough love.
00:56:35That's why I think Tampa is in for a really nice season.
00:56:38Caminero is one of the best power hitters in the game.
00:56:40This dude rakes, Aranda rakes, their pitching staff, their defense.
00:56:46They're legit.
00:56:47I want to call it Valade Biladi.
00:56:49Where'd Valade come from?
00:56:51I don't know, but his nickname is the big ring.
00:56:54Seeds all over the place.
00:56:55And they're doing this, he's got the long hair, but let's stay here, Yandy.
00:56:59I just want to walk you through how I thought as a hitter.
00:57:02All right, Trevor Rodgers, pause this for me real quick.
00:57:06The only place Trevor Rodgers can go to get Yandy Diaz out, seriously, if he's going good,
00:57:15is he's got to black him in, black him in, or elevate up, or it's up to Yandy.
00:57:22And the reason I say that is, is as a guy looking to go up the middle the other way,
00:57:27when you're a lefty trying to get in and you don't have cut like Lester, Cole Hamels back in the
00:57:33day
00:57:34where they're moving this plate, you don't think he can do it unless it's paint, right?
00:57:42So you're giving him that.
00:57:43Absolutely.
00:57:44That means I'm on heater middle away, I can drive it up the middle the other way,
00:57:50and that keeps me on off speed as well.
00:57:53So as long as I get him in the zone, Yandy Diaz should win every battle versus Trevor Rodgers.
00:58:00So run this.
00:58:00He's got a moat too.
00:58:01He doesn't care.
00:58:03He doesn't get that pitch right there.
00:58:05And now it's game on, right?
00:58:08So next time up, he takes his 2-2 changeup, pull side.
00:58:12I said he's going to ambush a heater middle away and hit a rocket to right field this second AB.
00:58:19He comes up to the plate, his second AB, he gets a heater middle away
00:58:22and hits a rocket down the right field line.
00:58:25And I'm like, it's 101, guys who work the ball up the middle the other way.
00:58:29Which, that's what he wants you to do right there.
00:58:32He earned that one right there because he got you up out of there.
00:58:35But Yandy will take that.
00:58:36I'll take it.
00:58:37Boom, give me that shooter.
00:58:38That's perfect for him.
00:58:39Run this.
00:58:42And his eye black is on a whole other level of eye black.
00:58:45It's like art.
00:58:46Okay.
00:58:47Now, what's the one pitch I said if he's going to get that call?
00:58:51Watch Yandy scramble this at bat.
00:58:54And I'm like, Trevor, you got one chance.
00:58:57You go in and you land it.
00:58:59You got him.
00:58:59If you don't, he's going to barrel you up again.
00:59:02He tried to right there.
00:59:04He executes.
00:59:05After this pitch, snap and gets him.
00:59:08Yandy's not even mad.
00:59:10The whole cat and mouse of what you can handle, what you can't handle.
00:59:14And he would go on and have two more bullets last night, get four knocks.
00:59:19Highest slug percentage to the opposite field.
00:59:21He's one of the best in the business of just setting his sights.
00:59:24But, man, I felt like I was having the AVs with him.
00:59:27I was like, Trev, I'll give you here.
00:59:28I'll give it to you.
00:59:29Boom, strike three.
00:59:31You got it.
00:59:32But I guarantee you can't do that consistently.
00:59:34Small margin for error with both guys.
00:59:36Yeah, Yandy's special.
00:59:38They're a very good team right now.
00:59:39I know everybody will go through their lulls as Nick Martinez.
00:59:43And those guys are going to stay hot the entire season.
00:59:45That remains to be seen what they do at the deadline.
00:59:49But the Yandys, Aranda, Caminero are as good a middle of the order as there is in the American League.
00:59:55100%.
00:59:55Right?
00:59:55Absolutely.
00:59:56Absolutely.
00:59:57The pitching keeps rolling like they're rolling.
00:59:58They're going to be trouble.
01:00:00Look at the hard hit rate per swing.
01:00:02Good grief.
01:00:04Juan Soto's a stud.
01:00:06And then you got Yandy, Vladi, Jordan, Mikel Garcia, and Mookie Betts.
01:00:10So, yeah, really good hitters.
01:00:12Do it differently.
01:00:14Super interesting.
01:00:15Caminero gives you some juice.
01:00:17Yandy gives you the eye black.
01:00:19I know that our colleague Albert Pujols had a big impact on Junior Caminero when he was managing him in
01:00:24the Winter League and the Dominican.
01:00:26So, those lessons are paying off.
01:00:29And Yandy Diaz, Lauren, it makes sense that he would be on the hard hit percentage.
01:00:33His arms are huge.
01:00:34He is.
01:00:34That's right.
01:00:35I love that he was pitched to you the same way as you.
01:00:38He kind of took us inside.
01:00:38You've never done that before, Dero.
01:00:40That was cool.
01:00:40Good job.
01:00:41Hey, we're just getting started in hour number two.
01:00:43Still got a lot more show coming up.
01:00:45Brewers with a statement win yesterday in their first meeting of the year with the Cubs.
01:00:48Coming up, a closer look at their recent hot stretch and maybe a new force emerging in their lineup.
01:01:05Welcome back.
01:01:07MLB Central is presented by Blue Buffalo.
01:01:13For me, I'm trying to keep the governor on a little bit.
01:01:16You know, just that's kind of the guidance that I've been told is like, hey, hold it back.
01:01:21You're going to feel good.
01:01:21But try to keep the reins on a little bit.
01:01:23And then, you know, as you respond well and as you keep bouncing back well from each bullpen session,
01:01:28then you can just kind of go out there and compete.
01:01:30And I think that's the hardest part right now is because I feel really good and I want to, you
01:01:35know, let it go.
01:01:35But I've been instructed not to.
01:01:38The first thing I said was the recovery will be faster.
01:01:42And then I think I stopped listening after that.
01:01:44I was like, all right, I'm good with it if you're good with it.
01:01:46You know, you trust the doctors.
01:01:48You know, I'll trust with the best surgeon in the world.
01:01:50So you just trust those guys to make those decisions.
01:01:53And if he's comfortable with it, I don't see why I wouldn't be comfortable with it.
01:01:58Tarek Skugel working his way back.
01:02:01I thought the same thing.
01:02:02Let's go round and round the bases.
01:02:03Stop in Detroit where Tarek had surgery to remove loose bodies from his arm.
01:02:07As we welcome you back inside.
01:02:09Word is Dero, CY, and Robert.
01:02:10He's already throwing.
01:02:11But this was a rotation in Detroit that opening day seemed full.
01:02:15And now six guys on the injured list.
01:02:17How does pitching in Detroit become a strength again, Dero?
01:02:21A level of concern in Detroit as well.
01:02:23Yeah, there's got to be a level of concern,
01:02:25especially because Riley Green's the only one offensively that's hitting the baseball.
01:02:29Torkelson's scuffling.
01:02:30He can't rely on McGonagall to be hot the entire season.
01:02:34It's a long year.
01:02:35But they've got to get it done on the mound.
01:02:37And without Skugel, their starters have struggled.
01:02:40Mize threw a nice start since recently coming back from being nicked up.
01:02:43But it puts a lot of pressure on A.J. Hinch in this bullpen.
01:02:47I agree, Dero.
01:02:48I think, you know, when you go into the offseason for the Tigers, you're assuming,
01:02:53okay, if something happens with Skugel or even planning for the future, if we lose Skugel,
01:02:59that's why you go and get Fromber.
01:03:01Yeah.
01:03:01You go and get Fromber.
01:03:03You have KC Mize.
01:03:04You have Flaherty.
01:03:06And you feel like Flaherty had turned a corner.
01:03:08And then you start to look at the starts and the outings after Skugel is out.
01:03:12And you start to lean on these other players to be your stopper.
01:03:16And then even when they go out, Fromber was rough yesterday.
01:03:19But his last start against the Mets, he went six and two-thirds shutout.
01:03:23And then you end up losing three to two.
01:03:25KC Mize was good on Saturday.
01:03:27You lose two to one or three to two, whatever the score was.
01:03:30So the offense isn't clicking as well.
01:03:32Well, it's a lot on the pitching, and I understand you don't have that ace
01:03:36that's going to go out there and win you the game every time he steps on the mound.
01:03:39But when you look at their lineup, as soon as they put their lineup out,
01:03:43after the four spot.
01:03:44Guffling.
01:03:45It's one.
01:03:46Going back to old school averages, you're in the 100s, five, six, seven.
01:03:51Put yourself in a tough spot.
01:03:53Eight games below 500.
01:03:55Meantime, the Milwaukee Brewers last night snapped the Chicago Cubs' 15-game home
01:04:00winning streak at Wrigley Field.
01:04:02Christian Yelich, recently off the injured list, hit one off the scoreboard.
01:04:06Hit another extra base hit, a little bloop double.
01:04:08Jake Bowers, a couple of knocks, including one that went over the scoreboard.
01:04:14Look, Dero, we've talked a lot about this National League Central.
01:04:18Yeah.
01:04:18And the Chicago Cubs last week, they were winning.
01:04:21They were walking off and winning all the games at home.
01:04:23But the Brewers, remember, have won.
01:04:26They are the defending champions of this division for a reason.
01:04:28And they got their superstar back, and Christian Yelich goes deep, first A-B.
01:04:32I want to give love to Jake Bowers.
01:04:34Yeah.
01:04:34I've watched this guy from afar.
01:04:36I always thought he could hit.
01:04:37He was with Tampa.
01:04:38Then he surfaced with the Yankees for a split second.
01:04:41And he has found a home in Milwaukee, and he is getting it done.
01:04:45Okay?
01:04:452026.
01:04:46He's got a 5'11 slug of weighted runs created, plus a 141.
01:04:51They have stars on this team in Bryce Terang and Christian Yelich to go with the supporting cast.
01:04:56And Pat Murphy finds a way to get these starting pitchers to go four and a third, four and two
01:05:02thirds, whatever the case may be.
01:05:03Little piggyback started last night.
01:05:05Yeah, they're exciting.
01:05:06With the Cubs, I think they need to go get some pitching.
01:05:09Yeah.
01:05:10I think starting pitching is going to be a huge question mark for the Cubs moving forward.
01:05:15I understand right now you're sitting in first place.
01:05:18Things are good.
01:05:19I really don't have a lot of concerns about their offense.
01:05:22I think they have good depth top to bottom with their bats.
01:05:25I think you're going to have to go get some orange because right now Ben Brown looks like your best
01:05:31arm right now.
01:05:32And I feel like the other guys, it's not enough swing and miss in there.
01:05:35And I think you need to go out and get something.
01:05:37They almost thought I might have been tripping.
01:05:39Yeah.
01:05:39I heard that.
01:05:40At the deadline.
01:05:40We'll be watching.
01:05:4213 hits, nine runs for the Brewers to Roberts Point in game one.
01:05:4512 runs for the Diamondbacks on Monday.
01:05:47And we showed you the highlights of Nolan Arenado, highest on base in the National League since April 21st.
01:05:54You were around him last WBC, and you said he's obsessed.
01:05:58Like, watch his swing in the mirror obsessed.
01:06:00What have you seen in terms of changes at the plate?
01:06:04Yeah, I mean, listen, Nolan's not going to stop fighting to figure it out.
01:06:08I think the thing I love about Nolan, and we've chronicled him dancing, I've incorporated it into my son
01:06:14because my son gets off his backside a little bit.
01:06:17I'm like, do the Nolan.
01:06:18We call it the Nolan Arenado drill.
01:06:20You step back just to feel like getting into your backside.
01:06:23Mike Trout was doing it.
01:06:25Yes, that's right.
01:06:26Listen, Nolan's one of the greatest third basemen that have ever graced the Diamond.
01:06:29End of the day.
01:06:31When it all comes out in the wash.
01:06:33He's one of the best defenders at the sport.
01:06:37A ton of homers and RBI, so it's nice to see him get rolling.
01:06:42It's huge to see him over here with the D-backs, seeing him be able to hold down the fourth
01:06:47spot.
01:06:48With the D-backs, you've had Jose Fernandez step up and Amardo Vargas.
01:06:52Yeah, you had a lot of injuries very early on with this team.
01:06:55So you understood you had to try to keep your head above water for as long as possible.
01:07:00And seeing how this National League is panning out, it's going to be a tough run.
01:07:04You're talking about the Cubs, the Phillies are bouncing back, the Brewers, the Braves, the Padres, the Dodgers.
01:07:10I mean, that's six teams right there.
01:07:12This is going to be a dogfight until the end.
01:07:14Arizona Diamondbacks got to .500 with that win yesterday.
01:07:17San Francisco Giants, the Giants.
01:07:19They got to run with the Rockies and the Giants right now.
01:07:22This is like that opening that they have to be able to take off.
01:07:26Meantime, the Boston Red Sox did beat the Kansas City Royals yesterday.
01:07:30Wilson Contreras, a big part of it.
01:07:32And I mentioned it earlier, D-Row, but you got an up-close and personal look at him over the
01:07:39weekend when they were at Atlanta.
01:07:40I wanted to give him some love because, listen, starting pitching-wise with the Crochets of the world and the
01:07:46Sonny Grays and the Rangers.
01:07:47Sonny Gray pitched well last night.
01:07:49You can tell how they're trying to win games.
01:07:51They're going to struggle to score runs so mightily.
01:07:54It's not even funny, to be honest with you.
01:07:56You talk about a lineup that doesn't have enough thump.
01:07:59But the one guy who does is Wilson Contreras.
01:08:02And I was sitting there Saturday night.
01:08:04Bryce Elder was throwing a gem.
01:08:07Peyton Tolley threw a gem as well.
01:08:09But it came down to one breaking ball that he picked off the ground.
01:08:13And he won them that ballgame with Peyton Tolley.
01:08:16Then back it up last night.
01:08:18Does the same darn thing with a huge home run to give them a win over Kansas City.
01:08:22So I just wanted to give him some flowers because he seems to be the only one in the lineup
01:08:27right now in Boston.
01:08:28I mean, Duran's – you're watching a pro.
01:08:31Duran is up here.
01:08:32It's outhouse or castle, man.
01:08:34He's going.
01:08:35No Roman Anthony in the lineup.
01:08:37And they're running a bunch of dudes out there that I'm like, ugh.
01:08:40It's got to be tough.
01:08:40As the veteran guy, I know he got into the headlines a little bit with some of his comments.
01:08:44But he's kind of becoming one of the leaders over there.
01:08:47He is the edge.
01:08:48He is the one.
01:08:49He's showing up every day with that chip on his shoulder, playing an amazing first base.
01:08:53Yeah.
01:08:54I think he's trying to be a leader over there in his own right.
01:08:57And I think the other guys are coming around.
01:08:59I don't think Bregman alone would have been enough.
01:09:01No.
01:09:01Like, just looking at it.
01:09:03Roman Anthony experienced some soreness in that wrist when he swung the bat a few days ago.
01:09:08They're going to try it again.
01:09:09So hopefully –
01:09:10I'm going to text him and see what's up with that.
01:09:11That would be good.
01:09:12Lauren, what game again do you have tonight on TBS?
01:09:15I have Blue Jays-Yankees from the Bronx.
01:09:17We will be watching on TBS in the meantime.
01:09:20We have to say goodbye to you and raise your –
01:09:23Yes.
01:09:24What do we got?
01:09:24Before we do so, there's a big event here at Truist.
01:09:27Do you see it?
01:09:28It's can you be brave for a day?
01:09:30Can you be brave for a day?
01:09:31So all sorts of –
01:09:33What?
01:09:34Get a breakdown, hero.
01:09:36Don't get me started.
01:09:37This is where I get in trouble on social.
01:09:39Yeah.
01:09:40Because –
01:09:40They told me that a lot of these people are –
01:09:43Did they say that you could wear jeans in the batter's box?
01:09:46Is that allowed?
01:09:47It doesn't matter.
01:09:47That's actually not that bad a hack from –
01:09:49Is it better to wear jeans or baseball pants?
01:09:52I mean –
01:09:52That's fair.
01:09:53I agree.
01:09:54It's fair.
01:09:55It's a skills competition.
01:09:57However –
01:09:58So everyone can come to Truist and try their skills.
01:10:01We saw earlier in commercial break there was a guy wearing cargo shorts.
01:10:04Unless you're John Cena.
01:10:06Lauren, get a few hacks in.
01:10:08Yeah.
01:10:08D-Ro, do you feel like they're semi-pro?
01:10:10That's what they told me, Elise, that they would have made it.
01:10:12Hey, that's a good –
01:10:13That's a good little knock the other way.
01:10:15This is the guy –
01:10:16Lauren, check the –
01:10:17We will see you tomorrow.
01:10:18This is where guys go to break.
01:10:20Go to break.
01:10:20Back being here in studio.
01:10:22He's the parent that talks to the coach, why is my son not playing more?
01:10:26Want to know why?
01:10:27Would you know –
01:10:27Because the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
01:10:30Okay?
01:10:31If I saw you in heaven.
01:10:34I'm not dying.
01:10:36Well, I mean, not –
01:10:37Well, Lauren, we're all kind of dying.
01:10:40We're all going to die someday, according to D-Ro.
01:10:43Well, yes, we are.
01:10:45Hey, Ballpark Cam takes us to –
01:10:49Oh, this is St. Louis.
01:10:51If you're in the area, might I suggest Cardinals.TV,
01:10:54because this is a very intriguing series opener.
01:10:59Keller and Livatore is your pitching matchup.
01:11:02Approaching bottom of the hour.
01:11:03We've got more shows.
01:11:04Stay with us.
01:11:10MLB Central.
01:11:13Welcome back.
01:11:14MLB Central is presented by Blue Buffalo.
01:11:17Lay out.
01:11:20J.J. Weatherholt's big league debut on opening day.
01:11:24He shows that he has the ability to potentially become a 2020 guy.
01:11:28It's a glimpse at your future, right, what you want it to look like.
01:11:30J.J. Weatherholt powers in his debut.
01:11:34The Cardinals walk it off with rookie J.J. Weatherholt.
01:11:39You can't script your first two big league games any better than that for J.J. Weatherholt.
01:11:44This kid someday will win a batting title.
01:11:46Kid's born to hit.
01:11:47J.J. Weatherholt's another leadoff homer.
01:11:50It's a loudly grand slam for J.J. Weatherholt.
01:11:54Incredible play in second by Weatherholt.
01:11:57Doesn't get enough love for his fielding.
01:11:58J.J. putting on his show.
01:12:00Once again, a man from Mars delivers.
01:12:03And listen, the Cardinals believe they got the best player in that draft.
01:12:07And I gotta tell you, right now, he's playing like it.
01:12:14All right, Doug, we do have some breaking news coming in to us.
01:12:17This from the Atlanta Braves.
01:12:19Now, this is a lot of text here.
01:12:21This is from their Twitter account.
01:12:23But the big point is, Drake Baldwin, their catcher, is going on the injured list with a strained right oblique
01:12:30muscle.
01:12:31Boy, that is not good.
01:12:32Considering how good he has been.
01:12:34Saturday night, I watched him barrel three balls north of a buck.
01:12:37Buck 07, buck 08.
01:12:39So, yeah.
01:12:40All right, so once again, Drake Baldwin going on the injured list with a strained right oblique.
01:12:44Let's take another break.
01:12:46He's nicknamed the Alien.
01:12:48C.J. Abrams has been out of this world for the Nats so far this year.
01:12:53Coming up, Dero takes a closer look at this shortstop and how he has taken the next step in his
01:12:59progression.
01:13:00Stay with us.
01:13:02One day you're screaming you love me loud.
01:13:05The next day you're so cold.
01:13:12Starwatch is presented by Konami.
01:13:17Here is C.J. Abrams.
01:13:19Career Grand Slam for C.J. Abrams.
01:13:21Trailed out to right center.
01:13:24Traveling high and deep and out of here.
01:13:28Second career Grand Slam for C.J. Abrams.
01:13:31And the Nationals have put up 14.
01:13:34Drops the head on it.
01:13:35104 off the bat.
01:13:3633 RBI.
01:13:385 RBI.
01:13:3894.
01:13:41Yeah, Starwatch presented by MLB Pro Spirit.
01:13:46C.J. Abrams has been someone that has been on the radar for the last couple of seasons for even
01:13:53casual baseball fans.
01:13:55Certainly the hardened fans that watch our network because there is so much talent.
01:13:59But look at the company he's now keeping.
01:14:02These are your league leaders and RBIs across the league.
01:14:05Liam Hicks from the Miami Marlins.
01:14:08Andy Pajas.
01:14:09And this guy Dero.
01:14:10Yeah.
01:14:11C.J. Abrams.
01:14:12He was in studio.
01:14:13I believe it was last year along with James Wood.
01:14:16And he has taken another step so far this year.
01:14:19And he talked about, Robert, if you remember, swinging a 34-and-a-half-inch, 33-ounce bat.
01:14:26That's a log.
01:14:27We talked about that.
01:14:28He was swinging James Wood's bats at the time.
01:14:31The only guys that I ever played with that swung bats that heavy were Chipper Jones and Alfonso Soriano.
01:14:36Ooh.
01:14:37So when you see him destroying balls into the second deck at Nats Park, it's one part just crazy talent
01:14:44and two parts he's using a monster bat with a ton of carry in it.
01:14:50He's very interesting.
01:14:52Like Robert said, he continues to get better.
01:14:55He's got a swag about him.
01:14:56He's going to be mentioned in trade deadline deals this year.
01:15:00I'm really intrigued with what the Nationals do with him moving forward because he is a really, really talented ball
01:15:08player.
01:15:08And like Robert said, we had him here.
01:15:10Nicknamed the alien.
01:15:12OPS leaders this season.
01:15:14There he is on the board.
01:15:16This is total landscape.
01:15:19Now bring it to the position he plays.
01:15:21Give me the shortstop board.
01:15:23Whole different ballgame.
01:15:24He's top three.
01:15:26Average, he's hitting .299.
01:15:28Homers, he's got nine.
01:15:29And Ribby's, we talked about it.
01:15:31He's first.
01:15:31On base, he's second.
01:15:33Sluggy second.
01:15:35And weighted runs created plus he's first.
01:15:37So I wanted it first.
01:15:38Nays did an amazing job diving in on his batting stance changes, what he's hunting, what he's doing better at.
01:15:46And I want to get into it.
01:15:48We had him in studio.
01:15:49He's not a guy that dives too deep into tinkering.
01:15:54Yes.
01:15:54In 2024, you could see a little bit more closed off.
01:15:58And then what happens?
01:16:00As he gets a little bit more comfortable, maybe he wants to free his hips a little bit more and
01:16:04handle the ball.
01:16:05Because when we get to his spray chart, he is not looking to push the ball up the middle the
01:16:10other way.
01:16:10This is not Yandy Diaz.
01:16:12This is Junior Caminero.
01:16:15This is get on top and try and hook it.
01:16:17So you see his stance?
01:16:18Give me the side-by-side side angle.
01:16:20Pause it.
01:16:23He's gotten a little wider as the years have progressed.
01:16:27You're always some hybrid version searching.
01:16:31I'm sure his leg kick was a little higher one year, and now he's dumbed it down a little bit.
01:16:36Pause.
01:16:37Run that back to the height right there.
01:16:40Yeah, you can see.
01:16:42Everything is about getting your swing off at pitcher release.
01:16:47You're hearing it time and time again.
01:16:49How do I be in a position of fire the minute the guy's right here?
01:16:54So everybody's kind of cleaning up.
01:16:57You're not seeing these huge movements.
01:17:01Keep it rolling.
01:17:04A big-time power, and it moves right.
01:17:07You can see here batting stance metrics march through May.
01:17:10A little bit more closed off in 2024 with his front foot.
01:17:14Basically standing maybe a smidge deeper in the box and a smidge closer to the plate.
01:17:19But he's just opened up his front side.
01:17:22And what has that led to?
01:17:24Three things I want to go through.
01:17:26Number one, kills elevated fastballs.
01:17:30Kills them.
01:17:30We're going to get to a point in 2024 where he hits like basically a pitch-out pull side for
01:17:37Almer.
01:17:38So if you try to go top-rail four-seamer, and he's on time and looking for it,
01:17:44he could drive it out of any yard.
01:17:46Left or right.
01:17:48So one of the things he does very well, elevated fastballs, he destroys.
01:17:53We're eventually going to get to breaking balls, and then what he does, and we're seeing it a lot.
01:17:57Oh, my.
01:17:58Run that back.
01:18:00What?
01:18:00Come on, man.
01:18:02Pause it when it gets to where the pitch is.
01:18:06This borderline pitch-out.
01:18:09Come on.
01:18:10Who's swinging at that?
01:18:11One, two.
01:18:12And he hits it out.
01:18:15Pretty impressive.
01:18:18Bring up the slug board versus elevated fastballs.
01:18:20Fastballs.
01:18:22Fastballs.
01:18:22Oh, my gosh.
01:18:23That doesn't even look right.
01:18:25Talk about getting on top in a world where all we hear is this way.
01:18:30Barrel dump.
01:18:31This is a guy closing the screen door.
01:18:33C.J.
01:18:34C.J.
01:18:34Abrams ranks versus elevated fastballs, 20-26.
01:18:38Average, he's seventh.
01:18:39Slug, he's tenth.
01:18:41Fastballs, 2.7 feet or higher in the batter's box.
01:18:47Now you talk about, I can handle elevated heaters.
01:18:50Well, what do they like to tunnel off the elevated heater?
01:18:53They like to tunnel the breaking ball off of it.
01:18:55What does he do really well?
01:18:58Kills the breaking ball over the heart of the plate.
01:19:03Because he really struggled on it.
01:19:05We're going to bring up a stat cast board here in a minute
01:19:07that kind of shows how he's gotten better
01:19:09and increased his ability to handle so many different pitches in his game now.
01:19:16Give it to me.
01:19:19Oh, simple move, too, Robert.
01:19:21Take a look at 24 through 25.
01:19:25Look at the percentage of breaking balls he's seeing.
01:19:28It's upped.
01:19:30He hit $1.85 for two years against that pitch.
01:19:33Now he's hitting close to 270.
01:19:35Slugging a full 100 points better.
01:19:38Hard hit percentage is way up.
01:19:40Run value, minus 18 against a breaking ball.
01:19:44Now he's a plus six.
01:19:45So he handles elevated heaters.
01:19:47He's gotten way better against breaking ball.
01:19:50Now you don't have to worry about platoon.
01:19:52And I heard Matt Olsen say this about a week ago.
01:19:57He was doing an interview with Jeff Francoeur talking about left on left.
01:20:01And he just said it's the biggest kind of dead stick in the game for him.
01:20:10He just feels like lefties, if you give them an opportunity to face and hit off left-handed pitchers consistently,
01:20:16it's only going to make them a better hitter.
01:20:18So yeah, there are guys that should be in platoon situations based on talent level.
01:20:24But usually the everyday guy at the big league level, if given enough time, can make the necessary adjustments to
01:20:30be successful.
01:20:31And he's done that.
01:20:32From 2021 to 2025, plate appearances, almost 650.
01:20:37He hit 220 with basically no damage.
01:20:4030% below.
01:20:41Weighted runs created plus 100-0 average big leaguer.
01:20:45He was 30 points below.
01:20:47Look at him in early stages of 2026.
01:20:50He's through the roof.
01:20:51And there is no wondering what he's trying to do.
01:20:54I mean, we can eliminate.
01:20:56This, this, this.
01:20:57That's an accident.
01:20:58He got lucky.
01:21:00Pretty awesome.
01:21:01Loved having him in studio.
01:21:03He's going to be an interesting name at the deadline.
01:21:05Yeah.
01:21:06You said something in our previous segment about the Nationals offense, and I'm just looking here.
01:21:10Don't they lead baseball?
01:21:11You know who has scored the most runs in the league?
01:21:14Yeah, them.
01:21:14It's the Washington Nationals.
01:21:18262 runs.
01:21:19Unfortunately, they've allowed 284, but it just shows you that this young team, offensively, may be on the right path.
01:21:26And Dylan Cruz is coming up, right?
01:21:28Oh, there we go.
01:21:30That's good to know.
01:21:30Good stuff.
01:21:31Hey, the Nats, where are they?
01:21:34Are they in?
01:21:34The Nats are at home.
01:21:36They take on the Mets.
01:21:37Nolan McClain will get the start for the New York Mets.
01:21:40So, C.J. Abrams versus Nolan McClain.
01:21:43That is an interesting matchup.
01:21:45I figured, let's see, six and a half.
01:21:47Hey, the birds are out in Philly.
01:21:49What kind of, what is that?
01:21:51Is that a black crow?
01:21:53No, it's not a black crow.
01:21:54It's a pigeon of, boy, if I had a slingshot.
01:21:58Never mentions the world.
01:21:59If I had a slingshot right about now.
01:22:15Ultimate Performance is brought to you by Snapdragon.

01:22:23Snapdragon.
01:22:29Time now for the Ultimate Performance, presented by Snapdragon.
01:22:34And two of the pitchers are pitching tonight on this board.
01:22:38They're highlighted in yellow.
01:22:40Jacob Mizorowski, highest average four-seam fastball velo among starters this season.
01:22:45He's at the top at almost 100 miles per hour.
01:22:49Chase Burns, who goes for the Cincinnati Reds tonight in Philadelphia.
01:22:53He's checking in at an even 98 miles per hour.
01:22:58And we do have more breaking news.
01:23:00This from Dan Hayes, who sent out this tweet.
01:23:02The Twins are sending Royce Lewis to the minors.
01:23:07He's batting 163, has an OPS of 539.
01:23:12It's, I mean, the numbers.
01:23:13You've got to get a swing.
01:23:14You've got to get it right.
01:23:15Bottom line.
01:23:16Wake up call.
01:23:17Go down.
01:23:17Fix some things.
01:23:18Get it right.
01:23:19Come up and help them.
01:23:20He needs to be a dude for them.
01:23:22He has to.
01:23:23Right?
01:23:23So they have to figure this out.
01:23:25Speaking of dudes, there's going to be dudes all over the place on Wednesday and Thursday.
01:23:29We're bringing you the Blue Jays and Yankees.
01:23:32We're going back-to-back showcase games right here on MLB Network.
01:23:36It gets started tomorrow, 7 o'clock Eastern and on Thursday.
01:23:41As for tonight, we are here.
01:23:46Oh, tonight on TBS.
01:23:48Okay, sorry.
01:23:49My IFB is cracking.
01:23:50Are you struggling?
01:23:51Do you want me to get after it?
01:23:52No, no, no.
01:23:52I'm good.
01:23:53We've got Dylan Cease throwing fireballs versus Will Warren, who's 5-1 with a 3-4-2.
01:23:59Yankees trying to build off yesterday's.
01:24:02There we go.
01:24:02That's a good job.
01:24:03Monumentous win.
01:24:04And you can watch it on TBS with Warren.
01:24:06We're back to walk it off.
01:24:15Okay, let's go through them.
01:24:16Odds and trends presented by Van Roole.
01:24:192-1.
01:24:19Nice.
01:24:20There you go.
01:24:20Let's build off that.
01:24:21Nolan McLean over under 5.5 Ks against the Nats.
01:24:25This is set up.
01:24:26That should be higher.
01:24:27Give me the...
01:24:27Yeah, go ahead.
01:24:28Give me the over.
01:24:29He's recorded at least six and eight of his nine starts this season.
01:24:34All right, Blue Jays, Yankees on the money line.
01:24:37Who are you taking?
01:24:38Dylan Cease?
01:24:39I took the over, Nays.
01:24:40Will Warren, that's your pitching matchup.
01:24:42Yeah, see, this is a setup.
01:24:44I'm going to stay with the Yanks, minus 142.
01:24:46I know Cease is on the bump.
01:24:49I'm going to stay with the Yanks.
01:24:50And then finally, you did a great breakdown along with CY on Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz.
01:24:55Excellent yesterday.
01:24:57Caminero to record at least two total bases.
01:24:59Who they face?
01:25:00Kyle Braddish and the A's.
01:25:02Tough matchup.
01:25:03Give it to me, though.
01:25:05Okay.
01:25:05He's got at least two total bases in three consecutive games.
01:25:08Guys, Van Duel is inviting you to bet home runs for all your favorite teams and ballplayers.
01:25:14Right now, customers...
01:25:18Going to need the prompter to roll up there.
01:25:21Keep rolling.
01:25:23Do we have the prompter to roll up so I can finish the sponsor read?
01:25:26Thank you.
01:25:27Right now, customers can choose the reward they want to use on home run bets.
01:25:31That's okay.
01:25:31We're good.

01:25:37So you've got to respect the sponsored element.
01:25:40You've got to respect it.
01:25:41All right, let's walk it off.
01:25:43Look at this guy in Miami.
01:25:47That's...
01:25:48A little schmoopy?
01:25:49Yeah.
01:25:50Yeah.
01:25:50Sharing the dog with the dog.
01:25:51Love dog day at the park.
01:25:52I have three dogs myself.
01:25:54Have you ever taken him to a park at the park?
01:25:56I have not.
01:25:57Okay.
01:25:58How dare you?
01:25:59You would never?
01:26:00I could only take one of them.
01:26:02I could take Leonidas.
01:26:04The other two are...
01:26:05Dutchess and Camelot.
01:26:05Not vaccinated?
01:26:06No chance.
01:26:07No, they're just...
01:26:08They're mean.
01:26:09Well, we don't...
01:26:10Not mean.
01:26:10They just don't interact well with other dogs.
01:26:12Well, that makes them mean.
01:26:14Not vaccinated.
01:26:16I'm not.
01:26:16What?
01:26:18Baby got his dip tent.
