03:38the night belonged to jordan walker and here's what
03:40he had to say post game about being the derby champion
03:48oh he was awesome today i just loved everything about it just his attitude his approach
03:54the smoothness his swing looked like his dad
03:57but uh yeah he just did a great job we're so proud of him
04:00he just really we're proud
04:02from early age he always loved the game
04:04he always loved to play baseball
04:06loved to sleep with his glove
04:08he always had a bat we traveled with it
04:10all the time he you know eight slept
04:12thought baseball
04:14um and he just kept progressing
04:16he just he just kept getting better and better
04:18and working on his craft
04:19and again we can't be more proud
04:23you know we've documented the ebbs and flows of jordan walker
04:26in his short career
04:27it's been up and down for him
04:29and last night it was kind of like a coming out party for him
04:31eric nay's researcher to the stars was just telling us
04:33at this time last year d-ro jordan walker had three home runs
04:37we chronicled his first three years he really struggled
04:41he got sent down because he was hitting the ball on the ground too much
04:44wanted to revamp his swing and then he bet on himself
04:46yeah
04:46he went back to doing what he knows what to do
04:49and he has been the x-factor for the st louis cardinals
04:52and why they're in a wild card run
04:54if you missed a second of the derby last night
04:56on monday night let us take you back to all of the action star studded that is for darn sure

05:06that was in the second round i didn't realize how big he was as well

05:56he was trying to become the fourth player
05:59to win a home run derby in his home yard
06:03he was into double figure double figures pretty quickly
06:08he's up to 11
06:09and then one more swing
06:11it's it's a line drive
06:13and he ends
06:16with 11 home runs
06:19in the finals
06:20and you're thinking
06:21that's a pretty good number
06:22for jordan walker
06:24to have to catch
06:25and it looked like it was going to be enough

06:52he's the fifth youngest home run derby champion

15:54last night hunter thinking is there a
15:57premier home run swing because we know

16:04deck which was even more interesting for
16:06you is there one swing that plays or no
16:08for home run swings well i mean obviously
16:11we just watched jordan walker win it and
16:12every single round was really good i think
16:15the thing that jordan walker showed us and
16:16and he said it in his interview if you
16:18listened is i was trying to be easy like
16:20you want to muscle up and you saw from
16:22jack caglio in the first like round
16:23where he's like trying to hit it so far
16:25and even bryce harper was like super
16:27launching it was not his normal swing but
16:29for me i think you got to relax your
16:31greatest power is when you when your
16:33muscles are relaxed when you have that
16:34gentle touch and he just found that line
16:36drive swing kyle schwarber obviously if
16:38you're thinking of like homer because
16:40he's hitting just the rainbow makers he
16:42creates the rainbow uh he's got that that
16:44swoopy swing and he stays relaxed too
16:46though hunter i think the ironic thing
16:48about jordan walker winning and you
16:50mentioned the home run swing is that as
16:52we detailed in our first block this is a
16:54young man that was sent down to quote
16:56unquote get the ball in the air right and
16:59now he's a home run derby champion and
17:01and sometimes it's just making that
17:02adjustment right they get baseball's a
17:04game that you're constantly tinkering you're
17:06constantly learning and and to really
17:07master the craft at craft at the highest
17:09level uh you're gonna hit failure almost
17:12everyone does there's very few people that
17:13show up like barry bonds and just come in
17:16and dominate right out of the gate but even
17:17barry had to make adjustments so to see
17:19someone go through the ringer make the
17:22adjustments and now he's getting his
17:24opportunity to make a name for himself and
17:25i don't think we'll ever forget this home
17:27run derby that was quite awesome you were a
17:29four-time all-star three different
17:32organizations you were telling me yeah i
17:34give me your favorite memory of your time
17:36in the all-star game i mean it's all for me
17:38it's about winning right so like when i
17:40got to go in arizona i i believe that was
17:432011 uh boach was the manager of that team
17:45in plannery and that's where i got to
17:46really meet those guys i didn't know i was
17:48going to eventually get to play for them
17:49but man did they bring a fun vibe to the
17:51clubhouse pablo had a big hit i got a hit
17:53off of brandon league i think it was just
17:54like one for three but scored a run maybe
17:57stole a base and uh so the win was
17:59definitely my best memory i mean you were
18:01beloved by philadelphia i saw it last
18:03night how was your time here amazing i
18:06mean it was it was short-lived it was
18:07like it was like a quick burst of energy
18:09and and getting to play in philly and
18:11getting to play in front of this this
18:13fan base that's so passionate uh you feel
18:15i went from like i just felt like a rock
18:17star it was like they just get so excited
18:19for every game they live and breathe
18:21whether you win or lose and as an athlete
18:23and a competitor that's all you can ask
18:25for and and that you we felt it last
18:27night in the home run derby what other
18:28home run derby city are you going to get
18:30that many boos for everybody and bring
18:32that energy uh you feel the passion for
18:34sports here and i loved it the fact that
18:36you mentioned uh 2011 i believe that game
18:38was started by roy halliday and there's a
18:41lot of roy halliday theme running through
18:44this starting pitchers because the last
18:46philadelphia philly to start an all-star
18:48game is roy halliday the last toronto
18:50blue jay to start an all-star game it was
18:52roy halliday i'm just wondering he was a
18:54contemporary of yours uh what what was
18:57your and a teammate what was your
18:58impressions and thoughts of uh playing
19:01against and with roy halliday uh greatness i
19:04mean the the the work ethic that he put
19:06in uh he was always the first to the field
19:08that was like a no-brainer you know i
19:10remember getting there super early and
19:12seeing him full sweat doing shuffles in
19:14the batting cage and you're just like this
19:16guy's an animal what the heck is going on
19:18uh and it was fun to watch his notebook
19:20and uh to to if you went and questioned
19:22him he was not a guy that was going to come
19:24and talk to you but if you asked him a
19:25question or you want an answer he was a
19:27great teammate he would like he would show
19:29you what he was doing and uh he showed me
19:31his notebook and how he game planned and how
19:32that gave him confidence is he's like i
19:34know what you had for breakfast before you
19:36you you even ate it you know so he just
19:39like understood what the hitters weaknesses
19:41were what their strengths were and he had
19:42the whole kitchen sink arsenal with complete
19:45command and mastery so when he took the
19:47mound it was a very special day uh you were
19:50very focused on that day because you knew
19:52how much work he put in and and he was out
19:54there to be a cy young every single year
19:56all right four-time all-star like i said
19:58i'm on the travel ball circuit with my son
20:01right now your nephew is looking like he's
20:04going to be an all-star yeah i've heard
20:05about this to the distant future he's
20:07already like in the mock drafts next year
20:09and he classed up his name striker pence
20:12he's throwing absolute fuel yeah so
20:14there's a chance we're seeing him walk
20:16down the red carpet in a couple years
20:17look i mean you got to stay humble
20:19there's two types of baseball players in
20:20this game mark those that are humble
20:22and those are about to be and yeah he's
20:24he's climbing through through high school
20:25and he does have a very very strong arm
20:27he loves to hit though and his hitting's
20:30coming through he's got a couple homers
20:31this this summer um but it is it's a bit
20:34of a two-way player he pitches and he hits
20:36and uh he's done this his whole life and
20:38we've you know it and it is i've been very
20:40lucky that i get to talk with it you know
20:42his dad and to talk to him he's been
20:44training like like almost like a
20:46professional player since he was 12 he's
20:47been hitting off a hundred mile an hour
20:49batting cage like he has the hand out
20:51he knows the history of the game he
20:52watches the show he follows every single
20:54giants game he knows their whole minor
20:55league system so that's intrinsic you can't
20:58teach that he loves the game and uh yeah
21:00i'm pretty excited to follow striker
21:03what are you looking forward to from
21:04tonight's game what are you most looking
21:06forward to man i enjoy watching the great
21:09obviously the greatest go at it you know
21:10we just watched dylan ceas i was on the
21:12call his last outing he almost threw a
21:14perfect game that's right he took a no
21:15hitter into the ninth inning uh it was a
21:17lot of pitches uh but to me it's to watch
21:20the little hitters i love the mechanical
21:21call out like to me it's not always the
21:24power hitters it's rare that you have a
21:25yordan alvarez that's going for the
21:27triple threat or like an erin judge these
21:28guys that hit homers but also hit for
21:30average so i want to see the louisa rise
21:33i want to see uh auto lopez i want to
21:35see these guys that are average hitters
21:37and come and see who steps up in the
21:39moment and and wins it's the best
21:40pitchers versus the best hitters that's
21:42where you find out what you're made of
21:43what do you think of the new format in
21:45the derby oh lauren you know i love the
21:47new format love so and i and i think i
21:50heard y'all talking about this i'm
21:51going to kind of you know preach the
21:52same the same song but we got to savor
21:55the magnificence of these homers we got
21:57to watch them talk about them you know
21:59come up with whatever shenanigans came
22:00up in our head and but to me uh it's a
22:03celebration of power the home run derby i
22:05i don't want to have a split screen where
22:07two balls are in the air at the same time

22:12watch them focus in the precision and
22:13the mastery of the craft every swing

24:27second yeah they got to just suck it up okay
24:29they play in this heat all the time i feel
24:31like now they get to show off their style
24:33they can walk the carpet look dapper and
24:36then they can go watch the all-star game
24:38good call i feel like i would never alter my
24:40outfit if i knew i was going to be hot like
24:42i'm still going to wear the outfit no matter
24:44the weather really are you going to be
24:47brutally honest i like what are you looking
24:51for like first guy walks down what what

24:57backstory i feel like outfits on red carpets
24:59in sports there's always a backstory so i want
25:02to hear that sometimes they have the most insane

25:06photos in their jackets i also really want to talk
25:09to the wives i want the wives to get their
25:11recognition as well because they also go full
25:14out for days like this role do accessories play in the
25:19fashionable outfit i mean i'm pretty simple i like a good
25:23bracelet i like a sleek outfit i don't like a lot of noise distracts me put the
25:29pressure on the face robert that's what we always say that's right you grew up
25:32dancing so there are so many major leaguers who can move their hips good
25:36dancers who would come to mind who would be the best dancer in major league
25:40baseball am i putting you on the spot i mean kind of but i feel like on the
25:44spot freddie freeman i feel like he seems pretty outgoing if we had a dance
25:48circle he would be out there i thought fernando
25:51tatis jr right away yeah that came to mind what about you no that fernando is is
25:55the pick for me i mean you look there was a commercial he did with uh with new
25:58era last year i mean he is just getting after it
26:01and that's him yeah so fernando tatis jr there's two that come to mind bobby
26:05witt jr because he's a bunny mm-hmm dance all over and eugenio suarez yeah he
26:11just seems like a good time yes he's got to be able to dance he gets the party
26:15started at weddings i hear you like that hey uh you were telling us you threw out
26:19the first pitch i did at pnc park i did you're a pirates fan and you're from the
26:24pittsburgh area yes i am i was so nervous for some reason i don't know why just
26:28walking out there to the mound felt like five miles long no it is a long way it is
26:33so long i don't even know what kind of ball i threw i don't even think it made
26:36it to the mound but we had our confidence we were supporting our city nothing like
26:42paul though i might have to take a few lessons from him

27:03came out everybody was obsessed and i kind of just we all grew so many followers
27:07overnight and i kind of just used that as a stepping stone and to create a career
27:11and here i am do you watch the show back or is it too hard i can't and my mom
27:15can't she's she cries every time she watches it just because of how hard it was
27:19and to be eight years old on national television going through puberty and
27:23getting berated by your dance teacher isn't something i'd want to go back and
27:27watch but we grew up we grew up and we learned from it
27:30we took those experiences well we look forward to uh to hearing your commentary

28:35welcome back this week the players from the united states air force academy
28:40baseball team as we welcome you back to philadelphia for mlb central on the road this
28:46week players from the u.s air force academy baseball team are joining mlb all-star week
28:50as part of the u.s air force and mlb partnership celebrating america's pastime for america 250
28:56it's a chance to connect america's future leaders with the next generation of fans
28:59through the shared values of teamwork excellence and service and they also got a surprise visit
29:03at the air force all-star village footprint from former air force academy pitcher and current
29:08mlb star paul schemes how's it going guys connect first class anstee with the united states air force
29:16academy there's a couple of us out here on the baseball team not only just representing what we
29:22do at the academy but also in the military 250 years of american excellence and if you feel like
29:28you're up to the challenge to do excellent things in your life to serve your country to do whatever it
29:35is and a higher calling i encourage you to sign up yeah baseball is important that's where you learn
29:41about dealing with adversity stress pressure teamwork cohesive unit winning and losing that's what we're
29:45dealing with on the real team exactly when our nation needs you we need somebody to step up and
29:50only a half percent is willing to serve and fight for our country so we're looking for that next
29:54generation of kids to say you know what i'll do it it's the coolest part for me being at the
29:59academy
29:59it's not the coaching between the white lines the the influence that we have to be able to take a
30:0515 16 17 year old young person and make the decision to raise our hand to serve fight for us
30:11that's awesome the united states air force academy is the coolest gig in the world we get to play
30:17division one baseball every single day and we get to get pushed to our absolute limits whether it's
30:22astro aeronautical engineering or we're doing stuff out in the field it is the best then we go down to
30:28the field and we play baseball we hike up on the road and see 17s and go play the biggest
30:33teams in
30:33the country you would ask me you know when i graduated in 1993 if i'd ever be doing stuff like
30:38this the answer would have been no no way right but you have to envision you know i talked to
30:43one of
30:43your buddies a minute ago i said do you ever think you'd be here he's like oh i envision it
30:47all the
30:48time that i'd be here do you envision that as well that you'll be in the pros one day do
30:52you envision
30:52that absolutely i think that's what makes people you know strive to be great and everything is
30:56whatever you try to do you got to be best at it or work hard to be at the top
30:59and you know see as
31:01far as that can get you and fortunate enough to get invited to an event like this and you know
31:04something on the destination as to where i want to go yeah well you hit the nail on the head
31:07it comes
31:08down to hard work right hard work and resiliency you're not going to be babe ruth every day you got
31:12to get up dust yourself off and get back in the fight if you want to push yourself to the
31:16limits this
31:16is the place to be and then you want to go play teams like florida mississippi state and compete at
31:21the
31:21highest levels what better place to do that than the air force academy where when you graduate you
31:25either get to go you want to get drafted and be here at the futures game with these guys you
31:29can
31:29do it or do you want to go fly jets do some things that our country need us to do
31:33there are a lot of
31:35parallels i think i think there are a lot of guys that are in the big leagues that would be
31:39very
31:39successful if they were in the air force or the military the attention to detail the hard working
31:45discipline all that stuff that is just part of the life at air force all the baseball players all the
31:51baseball cadets do that at the field too and i think it's just if it's part of your life it
31:58becomes
31:58a lot easier so i think there are a lot of a lot of parallels it's vital to us obviously
32:03our recruiting
32:03it's so easy to recruit people when you have ball skis as a mentor somebody to look up to it's
32:08one of our
32:08core values like just service before self like that's something you get you're getting the spotlight
32:13and it's always about giving back and putting a good light on america i mean this is our 250 and
32:18so it's
32:19like providing a good light whether it's through the mlb through the military through the air force
32:23academy baseball it's always about giving back and that's what they teach us at the academy it's
32:27always service before self you want to come to our school it's going to be hard and challenging
32:31and difficult but if you want to change our world you come to our school you get to change the
32:36world
32:39all-star week is a celebration of this great game we love it's the 96th all-star game the fifth
32:45hosted by the city of philadelphia and we cannot wait for the main event it is on fox tonight and
32:52when you go to philly you're gonna eat take on me to the ball game philadelphia style gentlemen you
32:57i haven't even introduced the food and you're already now that's okay i did crush a full cheese
33:02steak last night during the home run derby let's go please we'll give you several new concessions at
33:07citizens bank during all-star festivities one of them a citizens bank park revolutionary rib
33:12melt which is in front of you right now smoked short rib aged provolone charred onion jam fried peppers
