00:00Jaden Daniels had issued, through his representatives, a cease and desist to LSU for them to stop using his name,
00:07image, and likeness.
00:08At the root was his number five had been handed out to a cornerback, DJ Pickett, who was actually recruited
00:16by the previous regime.
00:17But Lane Kiffin chose to honor a promise.
00:21Can we play the Lane Kiffin audio just to set this up, Valdez?
00:25Now, this is from a week ago when Kiffin was explaining why DJ Pickett, this young cornerback, was going to
00:34get Jaden Daniels number five.
00:36DJ is in five, and that was a situation that was promised to him in recruiting here, for him to
00:44sign here.
00:45And I've done a lot of research on that with the family and the representatives and the people.
00:51So really, I didn't have a decision to make.
00:52It was promised to the kid.
00:54It wasn't done for whatever.
00:55I'm not going to get into that.
00:56I'm not going to judge something that I wasn't here of.
00:59But when a kid's promised something to come to school, he should wear it.
01:03And so at that point, I don't really think that's my decision.
01:07You know, I should be honored what he was told.
01:12And so, he's wearing it.
01:17So Brian Kelly, who recruited him, said, DJ, you come here, you can wear five.
01:21He's a sophomore, right?
01:23Yeah, he's a sophomore.
01:23So his first year, he didn't wear it.
01:25He wore number three.
01:26He wore three.
01:26And so, Kiffin's making a point of changing it and giving him that.
01:31Well, probably because the guy's threatening transfer portal.
01:34No, I think he asked him after his first year, after the coach came in, he said, hey, this was
01:39promised to me.
01:39I understand.
01:40I couldn't get it.
01:41Yeah, I understand.
01:42So I don't think, like, Lane Kiffin cares about it or thought about it.
01:46I think DJ went to him and said, hey.
01:48Asked for it.
01:48Yeah.
01:49I understand.
01:50And we also have some DJ Pickett audio because Pickett now all of a sudden, this college kid
01:55wanted to play, but he feels like he has to respond to him versus Jaden Daniels and why
02:00he's wearing number five.
02:19A little tough to hear, but what he said is, I've worn the number my whole life since I
02:23was four years old.
02:24It's a number I was promised by LSU.
02:27I wish Jaden the best.
02:28Good player.
02:29And he did real good here.
02:30So that's all.
02:33Kind of diminished how good Jaden Daniels did there.
02:36The guy won the Heisman Trophy.
02:37Yeah, yeah.
02:38It's crazy.
02:39The whole situation is crazy.
02:40Spout out of control.
02:41I understand.
02:42I honestly think I understand what's going on from Jaden's team's perspective.
02:46They're just protecting him.
02:47He was probably told.
02:49I mean, I know Burrow was told they're not going to give away his number.
02:52He said that.
02:53There was an interview somewhere.
02:55I don't know that that was.
02:56I just heard about it a couple hours ago.
02:58So I don't necessarily have too many thoughts at this time.
03:05I just don't know enough about the situation to have any thoughts, I would say.
03:10But has there ever been a conversation where you've ever been back in commission?
03:14Have you ever thought about that since you left?
03:16Like they haven't used nine?
03:18Yeah, they told me that they wouldn't use it again.
03:22But, you know, you never know.
03:24You never know what happens.
03:26I just heard about it.
03:27Right.
03:28So I totally get it.
03:30I mean, Jaden's family, or whatever, advisors of Jaden himself, I'm sure, you know, a little pissed off about it.
03:38So they're trying to pursue it, and it's just spiraled out of control.
03:41So Jaden did respond.
03:43Now, we didn't get to see Jaden at the podium.
03:46We were wondering whether the beat reporters who were there every day at training camp would be able to ask
03:51him,
03:51and you'd be able to see him talk about it.
03:54But he did put something out on his Instagram.
03:56You can follow him at ThatKidJaden.
03:59Here's the quote.
04:00I've been locked in on training camp, and that's been my number one focus.
04:04I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU, and I'm proud of what my teammates and I
04:10accomplished there.
04:11Obviously, there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU, and my hope is that it will
04:15get done privately.
04:17My sole personal focus is on Commander's football.
04:21I realize the business of football is unique, and I trust this can all be resolved.
04:25And that's kind of also what I said yesterday, is that just like there have been disputes with Brian Mitchell
04:32and ownership here, or Daryl Green and ownership here, and, you know, go through the list of players.
04:40John Riggins multiple times has had issues with various owners throughout his tenure here.
04:46I think it's an issue that will get worked out one way or the other.
04:49And so, you know, then the Heisman story came back.
04:53There's some tit-for-tat stuff going on.
04:54Well, if you're going to do that, then we don't want you to use his name like this, and we
04:57want you to send the Heisman back.
04:58To me, it's not that big a deal, any of this stuff.
05:01I know that the country's running away with it.
05:03Like, it's a massive story.
05:04And LSU said, no, we're not giving the Heisman back.
05:06Yeah, but to me, it's just normal negotiations that go back and forth when there's a dispute.
05:11I mean, there's a dispute.
05:13There is.
05:15It's terrible timing.
05:16Yeah, but I honestly actually don't think that Jaden's thinking about it.
05:20I believe his statement 100%.
05:21Yeah, I mean, I think he's focused.
05:22It's something they had a conversation about, and he's locked in on the season.
05:26Listen, but this is something that snowballed out of control in a kind of a dead period.
05:31I don't think, ultimately, it's a big deal, but it's certainly a big deal right now.
05:35People are making a big deal about it.
05:36I mean, it's a national story.
05:37That's why we're going to have Paul Feinbaum on the show, lead SEC commentator.
05:42He's going to join us at 825.
05:43It is a big story.
05:44Don't want to miss him.
05:44That's no doubt.
05:45I don't know.
