There were tons of highs and lows throughout yesterday’s game between Washington and Philadelphia. It was great to see Jayden Daniels stay healthy for the entire game against a tough Eagles defense. In this segment, The Sports Junkies grade Jayden Daniels’ performance in week one. What grade would you give Jayden Daniels?

00:00A long time since, you know, started a game, finished a game from start to finish.
00:04So, you know, I'm just blessed and happy to be here and, you know, continue to move on
00:08and get ready for Dallas next week.
00:12So, I mean, he admits it was, I mean, he didn't give you a lot there, but yeah, he basically
00:17said, it's been a while since I've started and ended a football game.
00:21And played an entire game.
00:21I mean, think about last year.
00:22I mean, they shut him down.
00:24I wanted him to play at the end of the last season.
00:26I was probably wrong, but I wanted him to play last season.
00:28I wasn't as adamant about it in the preseason.
00:31I don't know.
00:32Maybe you're right.
00:32Maybe, you know, if he had gotten two more series in the preseason, it wouldn't matter.
00:36I don't know.
00:38But it is what it is.
00:39A guy hadn't played an NFL game in quite a long time.
00:42And I don't know.
00:43Was he rusty early?
00:44Maybe.
00:45Yeah, I think so.
00:45I mean, there were, maybe.
00:47He was a little off, don't you think?
00:48So, that does set up the question.
00:50I think they were hurrying.
00:52Should he have played more in the preseason?
00:52I'm not saying it was all his fault.
00:54I mean, there were reasons for it.
00:55They knew that he hadn't played a lot at the end of last season.
00:58They knew last season was a dud for him, especially health-wise.
01:03Like, should he have played more in the preseason?
01:06I don't know.
01:07The question was asked a lot heading into the regular season.
01:09I just don't know.
01:10I don't know the answer.
01:11I know some people say yes.
01:12But I still, like I told you, I'd rather have him healthy for week one.
01:18We got him healthy.
01:18It was a bad first half overall for the offense.
01:21How much of that was just Jaden was just rusty?
01:23I don't know.
01:24It seemed like he was hurried.
01:25Didn't have a lot of time.
01:26Was making a concerted effort to throw the ball away.
01:27He was high on a pass or two.
01:30Wasn't perfect by any stretch.
01:32But would he have been better if he had played one more series or two more series?
01:36Even on the touchdown pass to Williams, he threw that ball to the ground.
01:38That ball was just a great individual play by Antonio Williams.
01:42So he was off.
01:43I mean, it's okay to admit that.
01:45He played a lot better in the fourth quarter than he did in the first half.
01:47I give him a B for the day.
01:48I give him a B for the day.
01:50I think it's pretty generous.
01:52I'd give him a C+.
01:54I can't give him a B for as poorly as he played in the first half.
01:58And the offense just wasn't really functional.
02:01I attribute a lot of that to Philly, to be frank.
02:03There were other factors, no doubt.
02:05I mean, I think if we were playing Miami, nobody would be talking about this.
02:08I think if we were playing Miami, he would have been us.
02:11But if that was any other quarterback that you don't like or follow, you'd be giving him a D or
02:16a C.
02:17I don't know if that's true.
02:18I mean, you know what Tom Brady said after the game?
02:19He said Jaden Daniels played great.
02:21That's actually what he said after the game.
02:23He said he played great?
02:23The word was great.
02:25I mean, I missed that.
02:26I don't know.
02:27He said Honor Brewing along with Drab and J.P.
02:28He said it was afterwards, you know, when they're doing that studio show.
02:32Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:32And then they hit him.
02:33Yeah.
02:34You know, he was making a concerted effort to stay down, throw the football away.
02:38He was hurried sometimes, but he said he thought he played great.
02:42I think that's a stretch.
02:43I mean, he was 11 for 25.
02:45I gave him a B.
02:47I personally didn't think he played great, but I would give him a B.
02:50I think he does need to, and I don't know if this is because of.
02:53I wish you were grading some of my papers in high school.
02:55Give B's.
02:56It's fine.
02:57I think the guy, I'm just so thankful he's on our team.
03:00I mean, I love Jaden.
03:01I think he's awesome.
03:03I think he'll play better Sunday against Dallas.
03:06I think he has more opponents.
03:08If you asked me, you put a gun to my head, and God would answer, okay?
03:12Because only God knows the answer.
03:13None of you know the answer.
03:14I don't know the answer.
03:16But if you said, did he play poorly sort of in the first half because he didn't get a lot
03:21of reps in the preseason games, or because the opponent was outstanding?
03:25I would personally put my money on the opponent was the factor.
03:30That's where I would put my money.
03:32If you had to preponder, it's one or the other.
03:34And he's in a new system.
03:35They are tough.
03:36He's not as acclimated to this system as he was the Kingsbury system.
03:40Right.
03:40It's going to take him some time.
03:42Sure.
03:42Like, much with the same with Blau.
03:44He's having growing pains.
03:46Jaden's going to have some growing pains in this offense.
03:49I didn't see a lot of growing pains from Jaden, actually.
03:51I thought he made...
03:52Did you watch the first half of the game?
03:54Yeah.
03:54I saw him make a concerted effort to just throw it away.
03:59And, you know, that resulted in, like, a lower completion percentage.
04:03You know, the numbers were gross.
04:06But he was being pressured.
04:07Now, we don't know.
04:08There could have been guys open that he just missed.
04:10We just don't know.
04:11I'm sure there were.
04:11Yeah.
04:12I'm sure there were.
04:13But he didn't turn the ball over, so that was big.
04:14He only got sacked once.
04:16And when the game mattered...
04:16He escaped the pocket a few times.
04:18He put on his cape, and he damn near brought him back.
04:21But, you know...
04:21He almost did.
04:21If we play an A-plus game on special teams, we actually win the game.
04:25If we play an A-plus game on special teams, we win the game.
04:28But we didn't.
04:29By the way, wouldn't have deserved it.
04:30Would have stolen it.
04:32Hey, sometimes you need to steal games.
04:34But my point is, if that was Caleb throwing up those numbers, or Drake May, or other guys
04:40that you don't root for, you would give them a bad grade.
04:43You wouldn't give them a B.
04:44I don't know, Jason.
04:45Maybe.
04:46I am partial to him.
04:47I am partial to him.
04:48That's fine.
04:49I'm partial to him, too.
04:50But I think it was a C-plus effort at best.
04:53I kind of want to give him a C.
04:54I'm giving him a plus just because he came alive late in the game.
04:58Fakes, you could give him an F, for all I care.
05:00You give him your grade.
05:01I give him my grade.
05:02I give him a B.
05:04I thought he was particularly good in the fourth quarter.
05:07The first half was a dud.
05:09Just is what it is.
05:10He was much better in the fourth quarter.
05:11I would agree with that.
05:12I was watching the same game you guys were, and I didn't see a ton of guys wide open.
05:16Well, what was his PFF score?
05:18It was actually fairly high.
05:19I think it was – someone said it was a 70.
05:22Is that high?
05:23I think that's pretty high.
05:24Well, then Hurts must have been an 80.
05:27I don't know.
05:27I don't know Hurts.
05:31800-636-1067.
05:32Your thoughts on the way Jaden played it.
05:33I don't have any concerns about Jaden Daniels this season.
05:37I literally don't have any concerns about him.
05:38No, no, no.
05:39But we're grading based on numbers and results each week.
05:43Yeah.
05:43I give him a B.
05:44Yeah, okay.
05:45I wouldn't give him a B.
05:46I don't think he was that good.
05:47What do you give him?
05:48I'd probably give him a C.
05:50I think a C is a fair grade.
05:51I'd give him an A in the fourth quarter.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Yeah, if you break it down by quarter, sure.
05:56He was really good in the fourth quarter.
05:57He was much better in the fourth quarter.
05:58I think the issues, by and large, were Eagles dependent.
06:02That's just an outstanding defense.
06:04Sometimes you've got to tip your cap to them.
06:06I think they're a better football team than we are.
06:08And we still could have stolen it.
06:09Well, hopefully the Cowboys defense is a bit of a softer touch than the Eagles.
06:14And it looked like they might be if they play like they did in week one.
06:18Yeah.
06:18They'll probably play better.
06:19Because Jack's dark carved them up.
06:20They'll probably play better.
06:21He really did.
06:21I know there's a lot of hype about, oh, Dallas is, you know, they made a lot of draft capital
06:25and spent a lot of money on the defense.
06:27It didn't really show in yesterday's game.
06:29So, hopefully the command is able to take advantage of that in week two.
06:31Did they even get to dark?
06:32Was dark sacked at all?
06:33I'd have to look up the numbers on that game.
06:35He was sacked twice.
06:36Yeah.
06:37All right.
06:37Let's go to Ricky.
06:38Call him from Winnipeg.
06:40Ricky, what's up, buddy?
06:42You're on with the Junkies.
06:44Hey, what's going on, guys?
06:45First time, long time caller.
06:46Thanks, Ricky.
06:47What's up, man?
06:47Yeah, no, I, hey, man.
06:49Yeah, no, I had, I was really encouraged at the end of the game, man.
06:53They played really well.
06:55I think Antonio Williams is the real deal.
06:58Yeah.
06:58The only thing that really concerns me is Jeremy Reeves.
07:02I want to see Quan Martin or Tyler Owens get a shot in that position.
07:05I love Tyler Owens.
07:07Well, what about Sanders still?
07:08Sanders still, no one's talking about that.
07:09Mikey is.
07:10He got beat at least twice.
07:12Struggling.
07:12Once on a bit.
07:13Yeah.
07:14Yeah, he got exposed quite a bit, though.
07:16He didn't look too proper.
07:18I don't think Mikey Sanders still can cover those guys.
07:20Well, I mean, we knew the secondary was going to be an issue with Amos sidelines.
07:24Like, guys are playing up probably a spot that they shouldn't be in.
07:28That's the next point of emphasis in the offseason.
07:31They got to dramatically upgrade the secondary.
07:33I would agree.
07:35That would be the next point of emphasis.
07:37Thanks for your call, bud.
07:37And I thought that Jeremy, thanks, Ricky.
07:39Thanks for the call, man.
07:39I thought that Jeremy on that one play, I mean, he was just a split second late on that.
07:45On that touchdown over the middle where he was like hard in space.
07:48You mean, so that was Goddard's first.
07:50I can't remember who it was.
07:51It was Goddard's first.
07:52Yeah.
07:52Over the middle.
07:53He was just a hair late.
07:54Like, I didn't think that was the worst coverage ever.
07:57I thought Mikey's was way worse.
08:01Oh, yeah.
08:01I mean, he was supposed to.
08:03Brady broke it down perfectly.
08:04He was supposed to play the outside and force wicks in, and he just let him get outside.
08:09And he was five or six yards away from him.
08:11Yeah.
08:11I thought Jeremy was like a half second behind.
08:14See how far away he was from him?
08:15Yeah.
08:15I mean, that was just a bad play.
08:17By the way, I begrudgingly tipped my cap to jail on Hurts, who I think is pretty mediocre.
08:22He had a really good game yesterday.
08:24I mean, he's.
08:25I think he's just solid, man.
08:26Yeah, he played really well.
08:27He wasn't fantastic.
08:28He was very solid.
08:30Didn't turn the ball over.
08:31He made big plays when he had to.
08:32I mean, the 22-yard rush was huge.
08:35That 22-yard rush was a backbreaker against the defense.
08:39Let's go to Mo in Largo.
08:41Mo, what's up, man?
08:44Good morning, gentlemen.
08:45Thank you for taking my call.
08:46Yes, sir.
08:47Very encouraged by the performance, by the defense.
08:50There are definitely going to be some growing pains along the way, so I'm prepared for that.
08:54But I'm not a big fan of your boy, Wonder.
08:58The principles within this run scheme, out of the shotgun, not a big fan of that.
09:03I thought we were signing up for something that was coming from under center.
09:06You know, when we got down there on the goal line first play, we get two yards, and then
09:10the next play, we do some crazy pass stuff.
09:13Like, just run the ball.
09:14Like, it's not rocket science.
09:16Until they stop it, they were gasping the second half, just dash them.
09:20But I don't understand why we're still trying to run the ball from out of shotgun all the time.
09:23We don't have big play packages when we need short yardage situations.
09:27There was a situation in the game where it was like third and short, and we decided to
09:32run the ball up the middle with Rashad White, who showed no burst yesterday at all.
09:38Like, he looked slow.
09:38He was kind of disappointing, yeah.
09:40I'm just not a big fan of what I'm seeing out of Blau.
09:44And then on top of it, the icing on the cake was the shovel pass.
09:47I mean, you take the ball out of the hands of your best player and shovel it into your
09:52tight end three.
09:53Like, I know it's week one, gentlemen, but the principles, the philosophies that were
09:58displayed yesterday were not encouraging.
10:00All right.
10:00Thanks, Mo.
10:01Thanks, Mo.
10:02All right.
10:03I think people automatically thought that when Blau took over, you weren't ever going to
10:08see the shotgun or the pistol ever again.
10:10Like, that's crazy to think that.
10:12Like, you're still going to see elements of the Kingsbury offense under Blau.
10:17It's not always going to be Jayden under center.
10:18I think the assumption was it was going to be about 50-50.
10:20I don't know what it ended up being.
10:22So, like, don't be shocked as you keep seeing that going forward from this offense through
10:26the season.
10:27Yeah.
10:27Like, he's not always going to be under center.
10:28I actually thought they needed it.
10:30I mean, they were getting good pressure.
10:31I thought he needed the shotgun.
10:32I was going to say, I think that's why they did it, because those guys up the middle were
10:35getting to them quick.
10:36And that's adapting to what's going on in the game.
10:38So, I have no issue with that, and you kind of expect it going forward.
10:42Yeah.
10:43All right.
10:43800-636-1067 is the number.
10:47People definitely want to chime in on the Commander's 24-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
10:53Did you think it was basically coaching malpractice, not for them to play more snaps in the preseason?
10:59Did that bleed over into the regular season?
11:02800-636-1067.
11:05More of your reaction from the week one loss here on The Fan.
