00:00So every year, Mike Sando, The Athletic, they put out this quarterback tier list where they ask NFL executives, GMs,
00:12former GMs, coaches, coordinators, scouts, their opinion on the starting quarterbacks in the NFL.
00:21This year, if you look at the panel, it included nine head coaches, included five assistant GMs, five former GMs,
00:38three other executives, ten defensive coordinators, five offensive coordinators.
00:43So a lot of people who are in the know in the league.
00:46And as you'd expect, their tier one quarterbacks, which they define as quarterbacks that carry their team each week and
00:55that their team wins because of them.
00:58And this is a factor which I think is going to come into play for Jaden and some of the
01:02other quarterbacks.
01:03They say that expertly handles pure passing situations.
01:08So third and 10, third and 15, and they have no real holes in their game.
01:14They only had four quarterbacks in tier one.
01:18I think you'd expect them to be Mahomes, Josh Allen, Matthew Stafford, Joe Burrow.
01:26The surprising thing is usually you throw Lamar in there and Lamar was just on the outside in tier two.
01:33And I'm going to guess he's on the outside in tier two because some people don't think he expertly handles
01:42the passing situation.
01:44Says he slipped back to the top of tier two after failing to threaten defense as much with his legs
01:48too.
01:49So that was part of it.
01:52All right.
01:53So there's four in tier one.
01:55Four in tier one.
01:56How many were in tier two?
01:59There's 14.
02:01Oh, 14 in tier two.
02:0214 in tier two.
02:04So tier two is defined as quarterbacks that carry their team sometimes, handle pure passing situations in doses,
02:11has a hole or two in their game, and there's dimensions that elevate them above tier three.
02:17It's 13 in tier two.
02:18Okay, 13.
02:19My math was bad.
02:20It's all by one.
02:21Lamar's the top of that.
02:22Okay.
02:24Jaden comes in at number 13.
02:28Is that fair?
02:30So he's in tier two.
02:31Jaden Daniels is behind guys like Brock Purdy, Caleb Williams, Drake May.
02:40Now he is ahead of Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold.
02:43He comes in at number 13.
02:46Is this a fair ranking for Jaden Daniels, who year before was very close to that tier one?
02:55Yeah, that's the thing.
02:56It was.
02:56Seems a little.
02:58Like, I feel like Justin Herbert is steamed up way in this list.
03:01He's six.
03:02I feel like that's too high for Justin Herbert.
03:05Drake May was really good last year until he got to the playoffs.
03:08He was really bad in the playoffs.
03:10He was unimpressive.
03:11Yep.
03:13Meanwhile, Jaden in year one was scorching hot in the playoffs up until the NFC championship game.
03:20Yeah, that's what it is.
03:21It's the recency because.
03:22Yeah, it is.
03:23It's definitely that.
03:24He missed so many games and he was bad last year.
03:26He wasn't great even when he was on the field.
03:27He had a couple good games.
03:28I feel like 13's a bit low.
03:30I'd have him top 10.
03:31Especially since after his rookie year, he was probably, what did you say?
03:34He was tier two, but he was much higher up on the list.
03:38Much higher up.
03:38So six or seven, maybe.
03:40So the voting average this year declined by 0.6.
03:44It's hard to explain how they came up with the votes, but he was a 2.32 tier two.
03:51He declined by seven.
03:53So he was number six.
03:54Number six.
03:55Last year.
03:56So he dropped seven spots.
03:571-800-636-106-7.
03:59Do you think this is fair?
04:01We're going to have Mike Sando on the show at 940.
04:04Pick his brain.
04:05And what is said in the little blurb about him is a defensive coach said he's got to
04:10reprove it.
04:12Yep.
04:13That's true.
04:14And the durability is an issue.
04:16But they also point out that Washington was 2-5 in the games he did start last year.
04:24He missed 10 games and there was a perception, and you can go into the stats, that he wasn't
04:30as dynamic as he was as a rookie.
04:32It was a horrible year.
04:33It was just a horrible year.
04:35I mean, he didn't have a true number one, a healthy true number one, when he was out
04:40there all the time.
04:40It was just a bad year.
04:42He had the league's worst defense.
04:43He had a terrible defense.
04:44Dragging him down.
04:45That's why he dipped so much.
04:46And I would expect him, if he stays on the field this year, he'll jump back up into that
04:52high tier two.
04:53I'm not going to put him at tier one, but I think he'll be much higher than tier two
04:58when they do those rankings next year.
04:59I feel like at this time next year, if everything goes according to plan, he'll be top seven
05:04or eight next year.
05:05Right.
05:05He'll be in that range.
05:06Right.
05:07He'll make a substantial move up in the rankings, I would guess.
05:10So where did they have guys like Jalen Hurts?
05:12I guess he was a tier two.
05:14He's the last player in tier two on this list.
05:17Yeah.
05:19I mean, a lot of it has to do with how well you play in big games and in the
05:24postseason
05:24too.
05:25I mean, you know, Hurts isn't like your natural passer.
05:30He's more of a running quarterback, especially inside the two with the tush push, but he
05:35did play very well in the postseason.
05:37Well, I think that's where guys like Jalen Hurts get dinged because of the criteria for
05:46the GMs and coaches and scouts.
05:50It's are you an expert at pure passing situations?
05:53Right.
05:53Right.
05:54So then nobody who sees Jalen Hurts as an expert at pure passing.
05:58I mean, he can get hot, but running the ball now has become so key with a lot of these
06:02guys.
06:03And if Jalen is out there, he's going to be a running quarterback as opposed to Jared
06:08golf, who's, you know, higher than him on the list, Jared golf and Jordan love higher
06:13than him on the list.
06:13Jordan love listed at 10 guys who just aren't runners list, but I do believe he'll be higher
06:20up next year because I think he's going to have a good year, especially since he's
06:23got McLaurin out there healthy.
06:26And he's got chig to throw the ball.
06:28He's got chig and he's got Rashad white.
06:29Throw that in there.
06:30Does it perturb you cakes?
06:32And if you want to chime in 1-800-636-1067, the Drake May was elevated above Jane Daniels.
06:38The Caleb Williams was elevated above Jane Daniels just after last season.
06:42Not really.
06:43I try not to get too worked up by lists a month before the NFL season starts.
06:48Am I crazy?
06:49Or did Drake May finish one boat shy of the MVP?
06:52Why are you guys saying he sucks or that he's average?
06:55He sucked in the playoffs.
06:57I didn't say he sucked.
06:58You thought he was good in the playoffs?
06:59What are you saying?
06:59Do you have a problem with him?
07:00I asked a question.
07:01He had a great year.
07:03He was unbelievable last year.
07:05He had a great regular season.
07:07He had a terrible playoff run.
07:09Who cares?
07:10Hold on.
07:12Who cares about playoffs?
07:13One of the games was a blizzard.
07:15Understood.
07:15All right.
07:16So give him an out there.
07:17I can give him an out there.
07:18But he was bad in the playoffs.
07:20Is that an offensive thing to say?
07:23Everybody's...
07:24Yeah, but you emphasize that.
07:25You emphasize...
07:26He almost won the MVP.
07:27He should have won the MVP of Diana Rossini.
07:30He wasn't doing her thing.
07:31He was unbelievable last year.
07:34Of course, he should be higher on this list.
07:36He should be higher than eight?
07:38I think so.
07:39He should be top five.
07:40If we're talking last year...
07:43If we're talking last season...
07:44I mean...
07:45I mean...
07:46And he beat the number one...
07:47He threw three touchdowns against the number one defense in the league.
07:50No quarterback threw three touchdowns against the Houston Texans all year.
07:53He did.
07:54That's impressive.
07:55Well, you didn't say that.
07:57You said he sucked.
07:58I said he...
07:58I said he stunk in the playoffs.
08:01Which is...
08:02Which is accurate.
08:03I will say this.
08:03He was bad in the Denver game.
08:05But they won the game.
08:06But there was a blizzard.
08:07Yeah.
08:07And he was really bad in the Super Bowl.
08:09I would agree with that.
08:10But I don't know if he sucked in the postseason.
08:14Sucked all the way to the Super Bowl.
08:16Yeah, right.
08:17I mean, if you had to bet right now...
08:18What are we doing?
08:19What are we doing as a society?
08:22Cakes is not a Drake May guy.
08:23No, it's not about not being a Drake May guy.
08:25But we've just...
08:26It's not only does your team have to win.
08:28You have to win.
08:29And you have to look a specific way while winning in order to have any kind of brownie points.
08:34Well, that's a Cakes criteria.
08:36Yeah, I know.
08:38Cakes likes the flashy numbers.
08:39If you had to bet, though, right now...
08:41Who's going to have the better year?
08:43Which, this quarterback tier list really is a prediction, right?
08:48They're predicting that these guys are going to come out and rank this way.
08:53These are the best players, and this is our order.
08:55Do you believe that Drake May and Caleb Williams, because they're drafted in the same class,
09:03will have better years than Jaden Daniels?
09:05Both?
09:05Will both have better years?
09:06I'm going to say no.
09:07Well, what do you mean better year?
09:08I mean, more touchdown passes, higher completion percentage.
09:12I mean, you look at the whole picture.
09:13I think Drake May is going to have...
09:14Now he's got a legit receiving crew.
09:17I think he's going to have a really good year.
09:20He's probably going to have...
09:20He's set up to have a really good year.
09:22He's going to have a similar...
09:22If he stays healthy, he's going to have a similar year to last year.
09:24He's got round, dobs to throw it to.
09:26Like, he has weapons.
09:27He's got Travion Henderson out of the backfield.
09:29Yeah.
09:29I mean, he's set up to have...
09:30I mean, I don't know if he's going to run for more yards.
09:32He's probably not going to run for more yards than Jaden, but I think he's going to throw more touchdowns.
09:35In essence, I'm asking, if you had a redraft right now, you know, we talked about this after year one.
09:41If you had had a redraft, Jaden Daniels would have gone number one.
09:44Then, after that, you would have decided, okay, I like Bo Nix.
09:48I like Drake May.
09:50I like Caleb Williams.
09:52After last year...
09:53Nobody's going to say J.J. McCarthy, right?
09:54Of the five guys who were drafted high in that draft, well, after last year, and this list has Drake
10:03May, number one, then it's got Caleb, then it's got Jaden.
10:07So, Jaden's the third guy.
10:08I think that's probably fair based on last year, but if you had a redraft, I don't know if you'd
10:14do that.
10:14It's just, it's hard based on durability to bet on Jaden Daniels.
10:19Like, he has to prove it.
10:20Like, this is a defining year.
10:22If he plays in 10 games, 10.
10:27That's more than last year, but you're going to think, you know what?
10:30I can't bet on this guy to be a durable guy because it'll be two out of three years.
10:33That's a massive disappointment.
10:34If he plays in 15, 16, or even 17, then you're thinking, okay, last year was an outlier, and then
10:44you could elevate him back to number one status.
10:47But the durability is the biggest question on Jaden Daniels because I think he's shown ability.
10:52Now, that said, last year, the passing stats were less than as a rookie.
10:57But part of that is also because of Terry McLaurin being in and out of the lineup and not there.
11:00There's a lot of factors, yeah.
11:02He's not going to have, his completion percentage is going to be higher this year than it was last year.
11:07Even though it was only seven games, he's going to have a better year.
11:111-800-636-1067.
11:12But I do believe Drake Mays is going to have a big year, too.
11:14I did put this up as our junkies poll of the day brought to you by Surfside.
11:20Surfside iced tea and vodka or Surfside lemonade and vodka this summer.
11:23You can grab a Surfside, go to your go-to canned cocktail made with real vodka, only 100 calories, and
11:29zero bubbles.
11:30It's not a seltzer.
11:31It's Surfside.
11:32Must be 21.
11:32Please drink responsibly.
11:33Is the ranking by The Athletic and Mike Sando and all these coaches and GMs fair where Jaden Daniels comes
11:43in, number 13, again, just to give you the neighborhood of the Tier 2 quarterbacks, it's Lamar Herbert, Dak.
11:51That's 5-6-7 in their poll.
11:54Then it's Drake May, Jared Goff, Jordan Love, Brock Purdy, Caleb Williams, and then Jaden Daniels.
12:03Right behind Jaden, Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold.
12:06Sam Darnold won the Super Bowl.
12:08Baker Mayfield had a pretty damn good year last year.
12:11So it's not complete disrespect.
12:13It's not like they have him 25.
12:15I feel like Sam Darnold's a little bit too low on this list, too.
12:18He led the team to the Super Bowl.
12:20He's tied for 14th.
12:22I feel like he could be a few ticks higher.
12:24I don't know who exactly I'd knock down, but 14 seems a little bit low.
12:29I kind of feel like Mayfield's a little bit low.
12:32I don't know if I'd knock Jaden down.
12:34I might knock Jordan Love down the list.
12:38Is Purdy high?
12:39Purdy at 11?
12:41Is anybody picking Purdy over Jaden Daniels?
12:44If you're starting a team today?
12:47Yeah.
12:48Or this season?
12:48No.
12:49Well, all those executives and defensive coordinators would.
12:52Apparently they would.
12:55If I'm sitting in the executive chair, I'm taking Jaden Daniels over Brock Purdy.
12:59I'm not talking like long-term.
13:01Like if it was just for one season.
13:02I'm talking long-term.
13:04No, no.
13:04One season.
13:05Your job is to win this year.
13:07Yeah.
13:08You want Brock Purdy or you want Jaden Daniels?
13:10Jaden.
13:11More talented.
13:12All right.
13:12So then you think he should be higher up.
13:14He's a runner.
13:15He's a runner.
13:15Yeah.
13:16Brock Purdy does have...
13:17He can complete passes.
13:18Purdy's been really good in his career to complete passes.
13:21He tends to throw some picks, but he's just not the runner that J.D. is.
13:26But I can see why they like Purdy better.
13:28He's also proven to win a bunch of games.
13:32But Commanders fans aren't going to agree with that.
13:35I'm sure they're not.
13:36And I know Cakes is not going to agree with Drake May over Jaden Daniels.
13:41Well, I think the guy that's going to trigger a lot of people, 1-800-636-1067, is Caleb Williams.
13:46Like Caleb Williams is such kind of a weird case because his completion percentage
13:51is horrible.
13:52His completion percentage was not even 60% last year.
13:55But he had the game-winning drives.
13:57He had the moments.
13:59And he's such a home-run hitter.
14:02You know what I mean?
14:03Yeah.
14:03He'll miss the singles.
14:06Yeah.
14:06But then he comes up big in the clutch.
14:08His completion percentage wasn't great, but he was much better at taking care of the ball.
14:11And then the durability.
14:13Yeah.
14:13Like he might be shorter than Jaden Daniels, but he's stockier and thicker.
14:19All right.
14:19Sneak in some phone calls.
14:201-800-636-1067.
14:23What do you make of this quarterback tier list?
14:26We will have Mike Sando from The Athletic.
14:29He's the creator of this list.
14:31Four tier one quarterbacks.
14:33Mahomes, Josh Allen, Stafford, and Burrow.
14:36For the second year in a row, Jaden Daniels finishes in tier two, but he's dropped seven spots
14:42to number 13.
14:43Let's go to Nick in D.C.
14:45Nick, you're on with the junks.
14:46Good morning.
14:47Good morning, guys.
14:48Love the show.
14:50First thing I want to say, congrats on the 30 years, guys.
14:54I appreciate it.
14:54Thank you, Nick.
14:55Thank you, Nick.
14:56But I want to say, the disrespect is so real.
14:59How soon we forget.
15:01I think no quarterback had to do more with left than Jaden Daniels.
15:07And, yes, he had the injury, but he had to do it all himself.
15:11He had no Terry, no Browns unavailable.
15:15Who else did he had to throw the ball to?
15:17You know, even in 2024, you know, Terry was outstanding, but then there was no one else.
15:23I don't know if it's completely fair that he had the worst situation.
15:26I mean, didn't Purdy have receivers who were banged up?
15:30Of course.
15:30Kittle banged up?
15:31I mean, right.
15:33Yeah.
15:33I think there were other quarterbacks that faced hurdles.
15:35I think you bring up a good point.
15:36It's a factor.
15:37No doubt.
15:39And like Drake May this year, they're loading him up.
15:42Yeah.
15:42They're adding weapons to a young quarterback, which is what you should be doing.
15:46That's the right way to approach it.
15:48Bring in high profile, talented players to make your quarterback's job easier.
15:53And it's also staying on the field.
15:54Right.
15:55Because Purdy had a similar situation as JD last year.
15:59And Mac Jones came in and played, you know, half the season.
16:03So Purdy was probably a little bit higher up in those lists a couple years prior.
16:06But I mean, it's all opinion.
16:09And if Jayden goes out there and has 27 touchdowns and seven rushing touchdowns and completes 67%,
16:17well, he's going to be higher on the list next year.
16:18It's a great year.
16:191-800-636-1067.
16:22Jayden Daniels, number 13 on this list.
16:24Is it a fair ranking?
16:25We'll take more of your calls next here on The Junkies.
16:27We'll take more of your calls next here on The Junkies.
16:28Let it do.
16:28We'll take more of your calls next to Okay.
