00:00It simmers down between jumps. Hopefully it just settles slightly. There he is.
00:13We've got the women's 800m final lining up on the track now. There's Kubo on the outside,
00:18the Asian champ, silver medalist. 159.52, one of the faster runners on paper on personal best,
00:242.01 this season, though. There's Shakira King, 2.02.93 in the semifinal for the win. She ran it
00:30very,
00:31very cleverly. She does like to front run, though, so keep your eye on her.
00:35Gebeheu goes next to her in lane number seven, the Ethiopian, 159.72, a big, big threat in this race.
00:48Paige Sheppard, 2.01.97 to win in the semifinals. Two minutes on the nose, her best, the US
00:55number 20 champion now, Ziva Remic, fantastic in Rieti. She probably won't have it quite her own
01:01weight in the same sense she did at the European under-18s, but she's definitely in the mix. 159.64,
01:07her best. Ljubljana Russo of Greece. She's in lane number four, the Balkan Champs 1500m winner.
01:17Olchawa of Poland goes in lane number three, national under-20 champion of 800 and 1500.
01:25Chloe Simon of Canada in lane number two. She attends the University of Washington.
01:32And Shibiru, a really interesting entity, actually a big personal best in the semifinal,
01:362.03, down from 2.08. She ran that really well, the young Ethiopian.
01:46Well, here we go then. We've just seen the men over two laps. Now it's time for the women.
01:57Kubo, King, Gebreheu, Shepard, Remic, Russo, Olchawa, Simon, Shibiru.
02:03This could go one of so many ways. It is probably one of the more open finals that we'll see.
02:12Here they go then. Two minutes lie ahead for these women, and one of them about to be on top
02:18of the world.
02:19Remic has gone out pretty hard.
02:22Her and King will be relatively even when they come through and break the stagger.
02:25Remic just gets herself a stride or two ahead. Shibiru's gone out pretty quickly as well.
02:30She's got herself up there nice and early.
02:32Olchawa in the mix.
02:34Now, King sits back here. This is interesting because she does like a front run, but she's in a good
02:38position.
02:39That's very sensible running, actually.
02:41Olchawa back in fourth at the moment.
02:43King just moving round, and Remic getting herself in a nice position at the front, Rob.
02:49And she's slowed it down.
02:51This is very, very steady indeed.
02:55Remember in the semifinals, Shakira King came through a very tactical semifinal
03:00and ran the second lap in 60 seconds, which is no mean feat.
03:04Remic has not been beaten very often at age group level.
03:08She's in second place, but there's a lot of talent around her, and this second lap is going to have
03:12to be fast.
03:14It is. King stood on the outside.
03:16Russo leading at the moment.
03:17The two Ethiopians in there as well.
03:18Those five looking like there might just be a gap between them and the rest.
03:21Those at the back will need to respond.
03:23Keep your eye on the Japanese Kubo.
03:25She looks like she's trying to put her foot down a little bit.
03:27King stood on the outside.
03:28Remic and Russo in there as well.
03:30Shakira King really nicely placed still.
03:32She's ran this very, very smartly if it pays off.
03:35Remic just beginning to drop back slightly.
03:38Now Gebraheu on the outside.
03:40The Ethiopian having to come wide.
03:41They're four and rest at the moment, and King trying to kick on slightly.
03:45200 metres to go.
03:46Remic finds a little second wind.
03:48She hits the front again.
03:49Russo responds.
03:50This is very tight.
03:51Russo in the mix.
03:52Those two stride for stride.
03:54King's going to have to come wide to get past them.
03:56These three now really starting to battle.
03:59Gebraheu etched with pain on her face.
04:01King comes really, really wide.
04:03Remic, can she do the European under-18 and world under-20 at all?
04:07I think she might just.
04:08Remic, the young athlete going so, so well.
04:11Russo on her inside.
04:13Remic just about holds on.
04:15Russo for second.
04:16King for bronze.
04:18My goodness me.
04:20Now that was tight.
04:21Not the fastest 800 in the world,
04:23but tactical and very entertaining to watch.
04:26Remic, brilliant.
04:30Brilliant.
04:31Brilliant.
04:34Wow.
04:352-0-3-0-3, 2-0-3-0-8 and 2-0-3-52 for our medallists.
04:43How composed for that age.
04:45Great call, Rosie.
04:46What a race that was.
04:48What a race.
04:48It was.
04:49King had to shove the Ethiopian out of the way on the home turn
04:52to have a crack at both of them.
04:54And I thought at the top of the straight, it might be King.
04:57And then I thought for a moment, Russo might come back.
04:59Remic just calmness in a way, Rob,
05:02with everything that was happening around her at her age.
05:05And what's really impressive about Remic,
05:08she won that title a very different way
05:12to that which she produced in Rieti
05:16when she front ran the whole thing.
05:18And it was basically a procession
05:19with everyone else battling for silver and bronze.
05:22I also thought King might have her beating on the outside
05:25and then Russo on the inside.
05:27Here's a sobering thought.
05:29The newly crowned European under 18 champion
05:32and world under 20 champion
05:33is still eligible for the next edition
05:36of the world under 20 championships.
05:38She's only 16 and she's just held off
05:43as a really spirited finish
05:45from the Balkan champion on her inside
05:47and the European under 18 silver medalist
05:50from two years ago from Great Britain on her outside.
05:53This was the moment around that final bend.
05:58Well, this was the first lap.
05:59But I thought King might have her
06:02when they came into the home straight.
06:05She showed great strength and composure
06:07for one so young.
06:08She really, really did.
06:10I think the momentum actually switched
06:11about three or four times in that home straight.
06:13King there having a little bit of
06:15a rgy-bargy with Gabriel Heyu.
06:17She did really well to come out of that on top.
06:19They just came together.
06:20There was nothing to it really.
06:21And this is where I thought King
06:23might have the momentum with her.
06:25I think there, Rob, my biggest takeaway
06:27is how well run that was
06:29from Remic, King and Russo.
06:30All of them so young, so tactical.
06:33None of them would have necessarily
06:34wanted it to play out in such a manner
06:36and yet they were all able to adapt their tactics
06:38and run it in a different way
06:40to what we've seen them be successful with
06:41in the past.
06:42King likes to front run.
06:44She sat back.
06:45She kicked.
06:46Remic, very different manner
06:47to how she ran in Italy.
06:49I think that's so encouraging to see
06:51and really great.
06:52Bodes so well for the future
06:53for all of them.
06:55Remic is very, very mature as well.
06:57I spoke to her at the press conference in Rieti
07:00before she tried to win that title.
07:04She's got calm head on those young shoulders
07:08and Shakira King's been around
07:10for a long time in Great Britain.
07:12That's a huge moment for her
07:14to take a global medal.
07:17She's got so many role models, hasn't she?
07:19That British, Slovenia.
07:21Think of Slovenia for a moment.
07:22Fourth of the men's gold here.
07:25That's a big number.
