00:00But they're putting that roller backwards and forwards
00:02round the first bend to try and dry things off and help these athletes after the beginning of
00:11each leg. The rain has eased but there is a lot of surface water. I think they need to get those
00:16Botswana men back. Give them a roller. They're obviously full of beans, full of energy. Best
00:22in the world. And the officials doing everything they can here to try and clear some rain off the
00:27inside lane but it seems almost futile. Lots and lots of officials in rain jackets rolling
00:41these around. They call them squeegees in America. I'm not sure what they call them here. Just
00:45rollers I think. What a spectacle. As Rob said, weather doesn't usually pause proceedings in
00:54Athletic. If you remember this season in Lausanne, the Diamond League was absolutely torrential
00:59throughout. They abandoned the women's pole vault there. They left everything else going.
01:04But here in Tokyo, they've paused the men's discus after just a couple of attempts, a slip
01:08and a fall from Matt Denny. But this race, the women's 4x4 will go ahead and it will feature
01:14Sydney McLaughlin-Lavrone, the second fastest woman of all time. Over 400 metres. 47.78 to
01:21take the title. Now the fastest ever relay split recorded in the women's 4x4. 78.72.
01:29We very much think Sydney McLaughlin-Lavrone might get that even in this weather, if I'm honest.
01:34I think she could do pretty much anything at the moment. People talking about whether she
01:40tried an 800. It'll be a spectacle. I'm not sure she'll feel the need to double her normal
01:46distance. Netherlands won this title in 2023 ahead of Jamaica and Britain. At the Olympics,
01:52it went US, Netherlands and then the Brits in the bronze medal position again. The Netherlands
01:56have subbed out Myrtle van der Schoet from the heats and they've brought in Femke Boel.
02:01They will go Selberg to Klava to De Vitte and then Femke Boel on the anchor leg.
02:10The parents of Femke Boel watching on, enjoying the spectacle. Naomi van den Broek will go in
02:16the lead position for the Belgian team. She'll go to Imke Ververt, Camille Laus and Helena Ponnet.
02:22The same four that ran the qualifying round. Same quartet for Norway as well. Josephine Tomine
02:29Eriksen, Emmanuelle Amelie Yule, Astrid Esgard and Henrietta Jaeger. Individual finalists.
02:37Seventh in the individual event. Jamaica will be led off by DJ Oakley, Stacey-Ann Williams,
02:46Antoinette Knight coming in for the third leg and Nikesha Price on the anchor.
02:54Complete change for the US from their qualification squad. For the final, they bring Bella Whittaker,
02:59Lena Irby-Jackson and Lea Butler and Sydney Bogotin-Lavrone, the world record holder in the
03:05400 hurdles and the world champion in the 400 flat. A few changes for the Polish team as well. They'll
03:11have Grick in the lead leg and Vrona Kutsipina and Justina Sventi-Essertic and Natalia Bukoviecka.
03:22Split fastest in the heats, Bukoviecka 49-42 to qualify her nation for this final.
03:27The Italians field Polinari, Troiani, Coiro, the inhibitor specialist coming in for the third leg and
03:34Mangione to anchor. Francie, Alex Du, Fanny Falquier, Louise Marival, the hurdle specialist and Amandine
03:44Brossier being cheered on by the Jan Schraub cheer squad. Don't save all their efforts just for the
03:505,000. They're happy to cheer any French athlete. So the rain has eased here in Tokyo. It's still
04:01coming down not as heavily as it was for that men's race. Just the one drop button in the men's
04:07competition. Unfortunately for the Portuguese team. I wonder if a few teams will play it slightly safer
04:14on the handovers. Not as significant perhaps in the 4x4. Definitely when we go to the 4x1.
04:20We have still got half an hour for that though, so hopefully it might dry off somewhat before that.
04:25But this, the women's 4x4 final.
04:33No way, no issues here. Keep an eye here on the break. What's going on? Perhaps, perhaps
04:40a good start here from Bella Whittaker. A couple of Diamond League wins this season in Oslo and
04:48Stockholm. Just in the closing stages. Whittaker very, very good towards the end of the race.
04:53And this first leg in the 4x100 is longer than the other races. So you might put your athletes
04:57with more endurance on this leg. That's why the Dutch team have gone for Stalberg. She's moved up to 800
05:02metres this year. So you can trust that she can find the extra five metres or so on this leg. Oakley pushing
05:09well here for Jamaica. Whittaker just trying to find something here in the closing stages. Strong
05:14finish from the Belgian quartet. Vandenbroek as well. The hurdler. Let's have a look. Who gets the
05:18button first? It's the Americans just alongside the Jamaicans and then perhaps the Dutch right in with
05:24the Belgians. Slightly sluggish exchange for the Norwegians there. It'll be fascinating to see how
05:31Lika Klava tries to close. Smarting after not making the individual 400 final. Lovely leg so far
05:38from Lina Irby Jackson. She ran the second leg for the gold in the mixed relay and she's pulling away
05:47from Stacy Ann Williams. Williams is a brilliant and very experienced relay runner but watch for Klava
05:54trying to close the gap on the Jamaican. The Americans have got real firepower on the anchor leg and I
06:01think Irby Jackson is pulling away here. Klava's closing the gap on the Jamaicans in second.
06:09Irby Jackson to Butler. USA have clear daylight here. 15 metres their lead.
06:15That's a big big lead for the Americans and they've still got Sidney McLaughlin,
06:19Lebrone to come. There's a hard chase going on from the Jamaicans though. And Jeanette Knight very
06:24good at the first half of the race. She always goes out hard and Jeanette Knight is definitely
06:29pulling the Jamaicans back towards Alea Butler. Butler such an experienced relay runner in the
06:35collegiate scene and for the United States at the moment just managing to hold the advantage ahead of
06:41Knight. And Jeanette Knight sometimes vulnerable in the closing stages of a race. I might expect this
06:46gap to stay pretty similar. But Butler from Knight from Lissana de Vitte. Camille Laus closing hard
06:53for Belgium. If you think with Femke Ball on the anchor leg here for the Dutch team, the top three might be
07:00away. Certainly the Americans with Sidney McLaughlin, Lebrone, the individual champion, streaking away.
07:06She's already got a huge, huge lead. Nikisha Price trying to go with Sidney McLaughlin, Lebrone and Femke Ball
07:14will give it absolutely everything here. We saw a conservative run from Femke Ball in the mix 4x4
07:18because she still had her individual campaign to go. But surely the Dutch woman is going to do
07:23everything to try and put her team in the silver medal position. McLaughlin, Lebrone is gliding away here.
07:29The conditions are wet and horrible. It's a soggy evening here in Tokyo. But Sidney McLaughlin, Lebrone,
07:35is on fire. She's streaking away down the home straight. Less than 50 meters to go. The Jamaicans
07:42are holding on to second place. But it is Sidney McLaughlin, Lebrone and gold for the US team in the
07:48women's 4x400. A championship record in these conditions. 3-16-62. Just betters the mark of the
07:57United States from Stuttgart all the way back in 1993. That cannot wait to see the splits there for
08:07Femke Ball. She gave everything to try and chase down the Jamaicans and it was in the end a bronze
08:15for the Netherlands. Silver for Jamaica and the United States putting on an absolute masterpiece.
08:2147-82 being credited to Sidney McLaughlin, Lebrone. They're not the fastest split we've ever seen,
08:28but so, so close. And I would have fancied that split might have come from someone like Alison
08:34Felix, probably chasing down a few other teams, probably on a dry night. But perfection from those
08:42athletes from start to finish. Whittaker to Irby Jackson to Butler to McLaughlin, Lebrone.
08:48Great race. The Belgians did their very best to get into contention. Imke Verwurt ran really well on
08:57the second leg. I thought maybe if the gap had been a little closer, the likes of Bukowiecka may have
09:05managed to close down, but they were too far behind. Yet another medal for the Netherlands. The Norwegians
09:13have finished in six, but they've broken the national record and they had a slightly wobbly changeover from
09:20one to two. The Italians brought up the rear, but McLaughlin, Lebrone, two finals, two goals,
09:30two championship records. The only thing left for her to do is break the flat 400 world record,
09:37but let's let her enjoy tonight.
09:43Klava smiling, having missed out on the individual 400 final. Whittaker's really come alive
09:53this year. She's had an excellent indoor season and she's followed that form outdoors.
09:58Irby Jackson's had a fantastic week here as well. Running really well for the Americans on the second
10:04leg in the mixed relay. Such an experienced campaigner. She was fourth of the US champs.
10:10McLaughlin-Lebrone, 47.82. She's only a tenth of a second off the fastest split in world championship
10:19history, but the track is very, very wet. That was about winning rather than the times. And when
10:26Irby Jackson finished her leg, Butler was in a cracking position.
10:31Irby Jackson, very good. We saw those splits as well.
10:36These US women running very, very quickly. And to be honest, I enjoyed this race because I think
10:41the big three teams there, they stayed out of each other's way. There was no arging, barging,
10:46a difficulty. There was further down the field. And I mentioned yesterday in the heats, this is what
10:51happens. If you don't put strong runners on your first and second leg, you then get caught in traffic.
10:56And then you've got so much to deal with. And the Norwegians with Jaeger, I mean, she might have run
11:00something phenomenal on her last leg. But if you're weaving around traffic and you're trying to work
11:07around bodies as well as delivering a fast 400, it does cost you. And the Americans, it's perfect.
11:15Very, very, the shortest line. No jostling. Great baton changeovers. And that's why we're seeing a
11:21championship record. Another medal for Boll to add to her growing collection.
11:34As far as Sydney McLaughlin Navrone is concerned, there's only one colour of medal, isn't there?
11:39It's always gold.
11:45There's the results of the women's 4x4. A championship record for America, 3-16-61.
11:51Jamaica, a great silver medal for them, 3-19-25. And the Netherlands, 3-20-18.
