00:00Wow!
00:13Right
00:16In absolutely savage conditions
00:20the men's 4x4
00:24is about to start but not before the arrival of royalty
00:30everybody in the stadium who is able are on their feet
00:36so too
00:38the men trying to win
00:43Charlie Dobson on the anchor leg for Great Britain he looks absolutely soaked
00:47they all do the South Africans
00:51what a team this is Van Niekerk is he appearing for the last time
00:56in a national vest the world record holder and Olympic champion
00:59from Rio and watch for Nene fastest man in the world this year coming into these
01:04championships
01:05Alexander Doom on the penultimate leg
01:07Segers on the right ran the best leg
01:11in the semi-finals he looked really good
01:17Yaya Ibrahim for Qatar
01:20Asian champion
01:21he goes lead leg for them he made the semis here and Samba was brilliant
01:25anchoring them home in a national record in the semi-finals
01:29but for the reign I would have said the Botswanans will have a crack at the world record here
01:34Epe on the lead leg made the final
01:36and Dory got a bronze three men in the individual final and Kevin at Shippie the 10th fastest in history
01:41the Netherlands such an experienced quartet and it's Angela having to anchor them home
01:52cameramen and women are doing an amazing job here it's absolutely smashing with rain
01:57Rasheen Mcdonald goes anchor for Jamaica he was fourth in the individual final
02:01they're dry but they're under the main stand
02:05then to Portugal
02:07second from the inside a national record to qualify
02:12Colleo arguably the most experienced of their quartet he'll go third leg
02:17and now to the United States
02:20a run-off to qualify after they were impeded by the Zambians
02:25Vernon Norwood drafted in
02:26Norwood has never lost a global 4x4 final six in a row
02:31and right Benjamin will anchor them home
02:34Benjamin
02:35added the world title to his Olympic gold in the four hurdles and he's won his last two
02:40major relays as well so United States in one
02:45Portugal two Jamaica three Netherlands four Botswana five
02:49Qatar six Belgium seven South Africa eight Great Britain in lane nine on paper
02:57this could be a rerun of the United States against Botswana from last year's Olympics
03:02it's an incredible team for the Botswanans three of the eight who lined up for the individual four final
03:07but it's absolutely lashing with rain and anything can happen
03:11the final of the men's four by 400 meter relay
03:17why you have to contest our sport in all weathers
03:20and their heavens have opened here in Tokyo
03:24for the last full lap race
03:28F8 going really well at the moment he's closed the gap
03:32on Yaya Ibrahim and Ibrahim made the individual semis
03:37Epi was a finalist
03:39good running second from the outside from live Pillay
03:42who's put Lee Thompson of Great Britain under pressure
03:45and Portugal running well on the inside
03:49dragging Vernon Norwood with him but look how much water is on lane one
03:53Norwood's feet will be absolutely soaked as we watch this
03:57first changeover Botswana in front arguably dead level with the Americans and they've got
04:03Ja'Kori Paterson who's been running 43 for fun this year although he didn't get an individual medal
04:09Ja'Kori Paterson based definitely out to prove a point here he's got
04:12Lexile Tobago another athlete that might be disappointed with his performance so far here
04:17in Tokyo there's the advantage for the South Africans and the Brit in the drier lanes on the outside but
04:22everybody now into lane one you can see the athletes choosing to run just off the curve there's
04:27standing water on the inside of the track here Ja'Kori Paterson in the lead for the Americans at the moment
04:32but he's got Lexile Tobago the Olympic 200 meter champion on his shoulder Tobago is finding something here
04:39in the last 30 meters Paterson and Tobago will change over first and then it will be the South Africans
04:45with Wade Van Niekerk great changeover for Alexander Doom as well
04:51the noise in the stadium is deafening
04:55it's pouring with rain and they're pouring on the pressure down the back straight that's Van Niekerk
05:00up against Doom Belgium in fourth South Africa third the Americans are leading
05:09what a blockbuster anchor leg will have it'll be Rye Benjamin the 400 hurdles champion against Kevin
05:15at Shippey the individual 400 winner Doom's going backwards Van Niekerk has a little bit of a gap and
05:21he's finishing like a steam train what a run by the world record holder McQuaid to Benjamin Kevin at
05:30Shippey and the South Africans with Nene it was inevitable batons would fall it's so wet out there
05:37what a finishing prospect Kevin at Shippey went 10th on the all-time list with his brilliant run in the
05:44final of the 400 Nene is smarting he was the fastest man in the world this year coming into these world
05:51championships Benjamin smashed Varholm and De Santos in the four hurdles can the Botswanans do it no one
06:01no African nation has ever won this title and look at Nene Benjamin's driving for the line what a finish
06:08they're all closing the American might be caught Botswana by a whisker what a race what a week it's been in Tokyo
06:17and for the first time in history it's an African nation on top in pouring rain in atrocious conditions
06:26they have risen like gods what a finish what a relay the Botswana's in the crowd are in tears
06:34and their star men are doing a dance of delight in the rain what a way to seal
06:42the first African gold in the men's 4x4 so often the finish line heroics belong to the Americans
06:50but they were caught on the line an inspired performance by a brilliant quartet USA just
06:58being given second place by thousands of a second and it's a brilliant bronze for South Africa
07:05they haven't been on the podium since 2011 and what a wonderful medal for Wade van Niekerk after
07:11coming back from that horrific injury many would have walked away from the sport the rainbow nation
07:17almost did it they take the bronze USA silver Belgium are stunned they just missed out but what a
07:24performance by the Botswanans that was one of the best 4x4s I've ever seen and they thoroughly
07:31deserved to be the champions of the world wow
07:37I'm trying to get the splits there for the for each of the athletes Kevin Occippi is being credited
07:42with 44 14 a phenomenal run from him in these conditions but Kevin Occippi he almost looked like
07:48he was settling for the silver until the South Africans with Takite Nene came up on his shoulder
07:54and that was enough to have Kevin Occippi the wake-up call to push all the way to the line perhaps he was just
07:59judging it perfectly but there you can see let's see the tobacco 44-04 we knew these men were on for
08:05something special the individual athletes F8 and Dory Kevin Occippi all making the final but
08:11Tabocco looked better than he did yesterday into overhaul Jacori Patterson he's run 43 seconds this
08:18season was some quite something from Tabocco I don't know are they miming how high they had to lift their
08:24knees to get through them through the rain it was almost that state of affairs on the inside lane
08:31there and the Americans did well remember they had the they had lane one throughout this they struggled
08:37in qualification to do that rerun this morning as well so perhaps they had the worst of the conditions
08:43the tightest lane for those first few legs
08:48Rye Benjamin gave it a real go it was 44-04 for Rye Benjamin on his closing leg
08:57the finish of that race was extraordinary Kevin Occippi does it on the lean
09:04and just two thousandths of a second separated silver from bronze I'm so pleased that Wade Van
09:15Niekirk has another global medal after all those years of trying to come back from that horrific knee
09:20injury but tonight in the pouring rain the plaudits belong to the Botswanans I thought they might do it
09:29and I thought in better weather I think they would have gone very close to the
