00:02Today, all new, Oprah, on location in England.
00:07You've not spoken about Michael Jackson since his death.
00:10Her one and only television interview.
00:14Are you struck between the parallel in your father's life and Michael Jackson's life?
00:19Was there a lot of pressure for you to have a baby?
00:21Why did the marriage end?
00:23Did you suspect a drug problem?
00:25Do you think he could have saved him?
00:27God, did he have to die for you to recognize that he loved you?
00:32Next.
00:37For my exclusive interview with Lisa Marie Presley,
00:40we met in the English countryside, a world away from Los Angeles.
00:45Lisa is here working on her new album
00:47and spending some quality time with her husband Michael Lockwood and their twin girls.
00:54So the last time we talked, you did not have baby girls.
01:01Yeah, your children were, you know, teenagers.
01:03Now those teenage children are grown, practically.
01:07Ben and Riley.
01:09What's that like, changing diapers 15 years later?
01:14I think now when you're, when you have children later, you, you are a lot more focused.
01:21And I, I know what's going to happen.
01:24You feel more confident?
01:25I feel more confident and I feel more focused.
01:27And I want to spend as much time with them.
01:30And I really, I don't want to lose any moments.
01:32I lost, when you're young and scattered, you tend to lose,
01:36you tend to lose moments that you don't, you know, you don't realize it's going to pass.
01:39Do you think that happened with Ben and Riley?
01:42I do a little.
01:43I, I, I was never not around.
01:44They were always with me.
01:45But I, my attention was scattered and dispersed for various reasons.
01:49Yeah.
01:50Because you can be there and not be there.
01:52Right.
01:52Yeah.
01:53You can be present, but still not be there.
01:55Exactly.
01:56Yeah.
01:56Is being away too from L.A. good for the children?
02:02Because we'd had a conversation earlier this summer.
02:06Lisa and I went hiking this summer.
02:07That's another story.
02:08But we had a conversation earlier this summer where we were talking about how the, kind
02:14of the culture of who's wearing what and how that, you know, transfers over to children
02:22is, you felt.
02:24Culture and lack thereof.
02:26You know.
02:27I think what made me want to remove myself was just when I saw in a magazine, a weekly
02:35magazine, it was a who wore at best between two, three-year-olds.
02:39And I thought, okay.
02:40Okay.
02:41Wow.
02:41Okay.
02:42We're, they're definitely out of here.
02:43Yeah.
02:44You know.
02:44It's gone too far, you think.
02:46I think that, I think that those, some children won't be able to have a life if it starts this
02:52young.
02:53I think that I kept my, Ben and Riley, I kept, and nobody even knew I had a son.
02:59And a lot of people didn't even know I had a daughter until a lot of just, they were never
03:04out there.
03:04When they made the choice to be out there is when they were known about and when they walked
03:10on their own.
03:11Can you be as famous as your father was famous, as famous as your former husband Michael Jackson
03:23was famous, as famous as you've grown up to be, and be normal?
03:31No.
03:33I can only answer for myself.
03:35I can tell you I'm not normal.
03:37And you have managed to be, you know, relatively very private, and that's why I'm thrilled
03:45that you're talking to me today.
03:47You've made a conscious decision to talk now.
03:50Why?
03:51Every time I've ever had an interview in the past, I tend to get very defensive because
03:57I was usually promoting something, and it would cross, it would always cross into my personal
04:02life, and I tended to want to never discuss the two.
04:05Like, I don't want them to cross.
04:06I know that it's hard to have them not, but I wanted to sit and really have a conversation
04:11about things that are, you know, more on a personal level now out of the way before
04:17I do have an album coming out, which I will sometime next year because I get that.
04:23I get that.
04:24You didn't want to be in the position of promoting an album and having people ask you about Michael
04:31Jackson.
04:32Exactly.
04:33The star-crossed love affair between Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson started in 1993.
04:40What began as friendship bloomed very quickly into something more, and in 1994, Lisa Marie
04:46shocked the world when she married Michael Jackson.
04:49And just a year and a half later, their marriage was over.
04:53They had not spoken for nearly a decade when Michael was found dead on June 25, 2009, at a rented
05:00home in Los Angeles.
05:03You've not spoken about Michael Jackson since his death, other than the blog that you did.
05:08Right.
05:08And I really didn't speak well.
05:10When I see previous interviews, I'm barky, and I tend to want to skirt out of it, and I
05:16would find quick little exits defensively out of it.
05:21Yeah, it's interesting because the very first interview that we did together, when I asked
05:27you, was it a real relationship, you became a little barky and defensive because?
05:34Because I didn't understand my relationship with him.
05:38Well, you know, having gotten to know you since then, I understand your defensiveness coming
05:46from your point of view, but coming from my point of view, the viewer's point of view,
05:53the world didn't know what to make of that.
05:57Right.
05:58And really still doesn't know what to make of that.
06:01And therefore, your blog, after his death, where you said, I want to set the record straight,
06:07this relationship was not a sham, this was a real marriage, I think really struck a lot
06:15of people, and even when you said on my show, yes, this was a real marriage, there was a sexual
06:20relationship, and all of that, but the rest of the world, I think, thought it was a big
06:29staged publicity something, I don't know.
06:31Do you understand that now?
06:33I completely understand.
06:34I do.
06:34Yeah.
06:34I understand that because to some degree, he was a master at manipulating a little bit
06:40with the media, so I understand that there was, nobody really knew who I was, so they
06:46just assumed that I was going along with something that he would be doing.
06:50Absolutely.
06:51A lot of that is what I wanted to clear up in an interview, in this interview, was to
06:55explain.
06:56Mm-hmm.
06:57He was brought up that way.
06:59You know, before even answering questions about him or talking about him, it would need
07:04to be understood fully, his life, which is completely different than anyone else's life
07:08that ever was, except for, you know, my father, he was conditioned to sort of get himself where
07:15he needed to go for his career and with his talent, and he became very good at making and
07:24creating and appearing and manipulating to some degree.
07:28It's true, but, but, see, and I always confused that manipulation, thinking that that manipulation
07:35was, that meant that he didn't love me, you know, but I understand it better now.
07:40The manipulation was because it was a survival tactic for him.
07:43So is it after his death that you have gained such clarity about the relationship?
07:49Yes, and I don't know why.
07:50I, I really don't understand that, but yes, this whole last year and a half has been spent
07:57trying to gain the clarity because at some point, I pushed it away, and I just had to
08:03move on with my life, and, and then that happened, and it, and it was like a tidal wave.
08:08Where were you when you first heard?
08:10Where were you?
08:10I was in England, and I don't know why, but it was the strangest day of my life.
08:15I was crying all day.
08:17For what reason?
08:18I don't know, and I don't normally do that, and I was, you know, trying to work, and came
08:23home, and I was literally cutting my food into my dinner crying, and, um, I wanted to
08:28go upstairs and go to bed and just watch something mindless on TV and stop crying.
08:33I looked at my husband.
08:34I was like, I don't know what is wrong with me.
08:36I just can't stop.
08:37And, um, and then an hour later, the knock came, and I, I heard.
08:42You heard?
08:42Who told you?
08:44Um, it was a friend of mine who just, and actually, I got, started getting texts.
08:49Are you okay?
08:49Are you okay?
08:50I said, what's happening?
08:51Um, actually, John Travolta was one of the first texts I got.
08:55Are you all right?
08:56Mm-hmm.
08:56I said, what's happening?
08:58Is this actually happening?
08:59It was still unclear, you know?
09:00Mm-hmm.
09:01And, and, and your reaction, your first reaction?
09:05Sh- real honest to goodness, shock, not even tears, just, you know, I was floored, honestly
09:11floored.
09:14Coming up.
09:16During the time that you were married to him, did you suspect a drug problem?
09:26Place.
09:31June 25th, 2009.
09:33Apparently, Michael Jackson suffered cardiac arrest this afternoon.
09:37He was rushed to UCLA Medical Center.
09:41People around the world were glued to their televisions as events unfolded in Los Angeles.
09:46By late afternoon, it was clear.
09:49Michael Jackson, the legendary pop star known by millions of fans around the world, has died.
09:56A little over one year later, I've come to England to talk to Lisa Marie Presley
10:00about their relationship and his death.
10:05The next day, after Michael's death, you posted very emotional thoughts on your blog.
10:10What made you do that?
10:13I think I was just rocking a baby to sleep and I was just in floods of tears.
10:17And I thought, I don't know, I had a moment of clarity and I realized all this bitterness
10:24I thought I had and, you know, an indifference and it was no longer.
10:31It all just came.
10:32I don't even, it's been so crazy, Oprah, that I don't even know how to explain how all of
10:36it's happened, which is why I waited over a year to talk about it.
10:40Because so many, there were so many phases of this.
10:43So let me help you through it here.
10:44Yes, please.
10:45Let me read an excerpt of what you wrote the day after Michael died.
10:48You said, the person I failed to help is being transferred right now to the L.A.
10:54County Coroner's Office for his autopsy.
10:56All my indifference and detachment that I worked so hard to achieve over the years has just
11:05gone into the bowels of hell and right now I am gutted.
11:13Gutted.
11:14I thought that was an interesting choice of words.
11:17That means gutted, empty, dug out, really.
11:22So, did you feel that you had failed to help him?
11:28Yes.
11:29Okay.
11:30So, in May of 1994, when you were married to him, or during the time that you were married
11:34to him, did you suspect a drug problem?
11:38Honestly, I didn't really suspect and catch on until, just before I filed for divorce.
11:46You know, there was just an occasion, an incident where he had collapsed and he was in the hospital.
11:51This is during the HBO?
11:53Mm-hmm.
11:53Mm-hmm.
11:54This was an appearance he was supposed to make?
11:56Yeah, an appearance for HBO, yeah.
11:58In December 1995, Michael Jackson collapsed on stage while rehearsing for an HBO concert
12:04special in New York.
12:05His doctor said Michael was suffering from a viral infection.
12:09Lisa Marie flew to his side in the hospital, where he stayed for six days.
12:15Everybody flew to the hospital, and it was very confusing what was wrong, because every
12:23day there was a different report, and I couldn't tell what was happening.
12:28Dehydration, low blood pressure, exhaustion, a virus.
12:32So I couldn't really get a straight answer as to what was happening with him, and I think
12:36we were all a little bit in the dark.
12:37And at that point, I think I really, I got from various indications, I believed that that
12:45was going on then.
12:46You thought that there was some drug use.
12:47Yes, and there were times when I would pick him up from a certain doctor's office, and
12:55he would not be coherent, and there was some behavior now looking back at it, and I knew
13:00that that was, you know, because of injections, because they were painful, and he would need
13:03certain things, because he needed to, so that...
13:06He would need things for what?
13:08Injections, or whatever various dermatological, you know...
13:13Is this for his skin disease?
13:14Skin, and various things he needed.
13:17Was it the kind of marriage where a lot of things went unsaid or unspoken, or did you
13:24feel a sense of intimacy and connection that you could ask him anything?
13:30I am, I honestly can tell you that it was in, it was every sense of normal marriage, and
13:36everything was spoken, and, you know, in the middle of the night, if he needed to wake up
13:41and tell me, and bounce something off me, and wake me up, and want to, you know, talk, or if
13:49there
13:49was trouble, or, I mean...
13:51Was he having trouble sleeping then?
13:53Yes.
13:54He was like a little gnome.
13:55I used to tell him he was like a gnome running around the room, because it was hard for me
13:58to sleep.
13:59A lot of times I couldn't sleep either if he wasn't sleeping, so he would be, I'd just
14:03hear him piddling, and, you know, it was a bit endearing, but then, and I didn't mind
14:09it, but he did have a hard time sleeping, yes.
14:11Did you feel like you were, in many ways, a nurturer, a caretaker for him?
14:18Very much, and I really loved that role, and I loved taking care of him.
14:24It was my, it was the highest point of my life, one of the very highest points of my
14:29life, was when things were going really well, and he and I were united together, and he and
14:35I had an understanding about some of the people and things that could go around him, and he
14:40was with me on those things, and we were, we were a unit, and I could take care of him,
14:46and in spite of what some people speculated while I was with him, that I wanted a career,
14:51or that I was trying to do something, it was absolute BS.
14:54I've never been comfortable being.
