00:00Front and center, honestly, don't like attention on me.
00:04Loved being next to him and taking care of him.
00:07I was on such a high doing that that I don't, you know, that it was a very profound time
00:14in my life.
00:15So it wasn't anything, it was real as far as that goes.
00:19I heard you said to the producers that being with him was some of the highest highs for you, as
00:26you just described, and also the lowest lows.
00:28Yes.
00:28What was the lowest low?
00:31The lowest was, you know, again, when I talk about him, I don't, I now, in retrospect, want to make
00:39very clear that I understand him now more than I ever did.
00:43And so when I speak about him, I can speak about him with understanding and it's all good now.
00:51For some reason, I don't know what happens when someone passes away and this is what's become of it.
00:56But I've come to have all this love again and understanding for him.
01:01And I don't know why it had to take all that to have this happen.
01:05That upsets me a bit.
01:06But were you angry with him before?
01:09I was angry.
01:10You were angry with him when you left the marriage?
01:11I was very angry.
01:13I was so angry because I felt that we had such, we were so united.
01:18And then at some point, he pushed me out.
01:22Why did the marriage end?
01:25There was a very profound point in the marriage when he had to make a decision.
01:30Was it the drugs and the sort of vampires or me?
01:35And he pushed me away.
01:36Vampires.
01:37Meaning people that are sort of spiders, vampires.
01:41Sick of it, sucking his blood.
01:43Sick of it, yeah.
01:43So you saw that all around him.
01:46Oh God, yes.
01:47Yes.
01:48And it was...
01:48Many people talk about that in stories written about him.
01:51He seemed to be drawn to people who would take advantage of him.
01:54What was that?
01:56The one thing that correlates with Michael and with my father on this subject
02:00is that they had the luxury of creating whatever reality around them they wanted to create.
02:06They could have the kinds of people who were going to go with their program
02:10or not go with their program.
02:11And if they weren't, then they could be disposed of.
02:13It's the reality of being a god in your own world.
02:17Right.
02:18And this is something that I've had way too much experience with on both sides
02:25where I've seen what can go on.
02:27And that is...
02:30My way or the high way.
02:32Right.
02:32Michael wasn't a bad person because that's how he functioned.
02:35He didn't know any better.
02:36It wasn't that, you know...
02:37I took it very personally, though.
02:39I felt I was disposable.
02:42You know?
02:43And it was the same with my father.
02:45Sometimes I sit and I think,
02:46there have been times when I've been angry at the people around him.
02:49Why didn't you stop him?
02:50Why didn't you say something?
02:51Well, because if you did, you were out.
02:53It's very simple.
02:55And he didn't mean anything either.
02:56So he wasn't the kind of person he wasn't,
02:58nor your father was,
03:00the kind of person who wanted people around him telling them the truth.
03:03He wanted to be told what he wanted to hear.
03:05When it's this unusual reality and an ivory tower and this godlike life
03:11mixed with an addiction,
03:12that's when you get into trouble.
03:14A lot of trouble.
03:16August 16th, 1977.
03:18Nine-year-old Lisa Marie was home at Graceland
03:21when her father Elvis suddenly collapsed in his bathroom and died.
03:25There was a lethal mix of 14 prescription drugs in his system.
03:31Are you struck between the parallel in your father's life and Michael Jackson's life?
03:36Your father and your former husband?
03:38Yes.
03:39It really blows me away, to be honest with you.
03:43I still try to figure out why, what is it that I had to go through it twice?
03:48Where these two incredible people,
03:51and I speak, you know, with the utmost respect and love,
03:54because I had that for both.
03:56Your father and Michael?
03:59Yes, who had the same fate.
04:01What is it about me?
04:02Why did I have to just,
04:03I went through it once,
04:04that was painful,
04:06and I went through it again,
04:07and I don't quite understand it, you know?
04:12Coming up,
04:13you think there was a big part of you
04:15that didn't want to see the truth?
04:17The truth in what way?
04:19The truth about the drugs.
04:31When we were hiking this summer,
04:33Lisa shared something with me
04:34that I think you all will find interesting.
04:38This is a home in Los Angeles
04:40where Michael Jackson died.
04:43Across the street,
04:44just a stone's throw away,
04:46was Elvis Presley's California home,
04:48where Lisa Marie spent a lot of time growing up.
04:52What about the irony of that?
04:56Just across the street.
04:57It's, my mother,
04:59when I came home after being in England for so long,
05:01I wanted to drive by and see where it was,
05:04and I lived there.
05:05Up until after he died, she sold it,
05:06so, and I had several birthdays there,
05:08and I said,
05:11she said,
05:12it's right across the street.
05:13I said, oh, please,
05:14it's not right across the street.
05:15You're being, you know, whatever,
05:18and then shoot her off.
05:19And I drove,
05:19and it literally,
05:20I was completely,
05:23you know,
05:23I don't even know how to describe that,
05:26how that felt.
05:28because I,
05:29and I don't even know if he knew,
05:30that was just another thing where,
05:33these things keep happening,
05:34and I still,
05:35in the universe,
05:36and I'm,
05:37okay,
05:37then what is it that I,
05:38I'm trying to learn here,
05:39what is it that I'm,
05:40I need to know?
05:41I thought it was interesting,
05:42when you wrote the blog,
05:44the day after Michael Jackson's death,
05:46you titled the blog,
05:48He Knew.
05:50What did he know?
05:52When I was watching the footage,
05:55of the ambulance backing out,
05:57of the driveway,
05:58and I went back to this conversation,
06:00that I had with him at Neverland,
06:01in the library,
06:02we were sitting by the fire,
06:05and he was telling me,
06:08that he was afraid,
06:09that he was going to end up like,
06:11my father,
06:12you know,
06:12he was always asking me about,
06:13when he died,
06:14and how it happened,
06:15and when it happened,
06:16and where,
06:17and,
06:18Michael was always asking you,
06:19about your father.
06:20Yes.
06:21And he said,
06:23I feel like I'm going to end up,
06:24the same way.
06:25And did you say,
06:26why?
06:27Yeah.
06:28I was like,
06:28what are you talking about?
06:29And I,
06:30I don't understand,
06:31down to the play by play,
06:33by play incident,
06:35was identical.
06:37First of all,
06:38you were much younger then,
06:41but as you look back,
06:42at your marriage to him,
06:45and who you were,
06:47in that marriage,
06:48do you think,
06:48there was a big part of you,
06:50that didn't want to see,
06:52the truth?
06:56The truth,
06:57in what way?
06:58The truth about the drugs.
07:00I was so naive then,
07:02but I know it's not easy,
07:04to believe that now,
07:05but.
07:05Well,
07:05it is easy to believe,
07:07we can understand,
07:08the state of mind,
07:09you were in.
07:11So first of all,
07:12you growing up,
07:13as Elvis Presley's daughter,
07:17and being,
07:18in your own right,
07:19who you are,
07:21you wouldn't be excited,
07:22about being married,
07:23to Michael Jackson.
07:25It's not like,
07:25some fan,
07:26who ended up married,
07:28to Michael Jackson.
07:29So because you're used,
07:30to the fame life.
07:31So you fell in love,
07:33with him,
07:34because of?
07:36For him,
07:37because he was an incredible,
07:39incredibly dynamic person.
07:41If you were in his vicinity,
07:43and he wanted to,
07:45give,
07:45and he gave,
07:46and he showed you,
07:47who he was,
07:47if he was willing to do that,
07:49in any way.
07:50Yeah.
07:50Man,
07:50I have never felt so high,
07:51in my life.
07:52I have never felt so high,
07:55in my life,
07:55is that,
07:56and I,
07:57am not lying,
07:58when I say that.
07:58He had something,
08:00so intoxicating,
08:01about him.
08:02And when he was on,
08:03and when he was ready,
08:04to share with you,
08:05or give it to you,
08:06and be himself,
08:08and allow you to come in,
08:09I don't know,
08:10if I've ever been,
08:12that intoxicated,
08:12by anything.
08:14I can,
08:14I can,
08:14I can hear what you're saying.
08:16Because when I first interviewed,
08:17first met him,
08:18before the interview,
08:19in 1992,
08:21it's like,
08:22he shines his light upon you.
08:24He like,
08:25when he opens that,
08:26opens himself up,
08:27and lets that light through,
08:29you just want to be in that.
08:31Yes.
08:31You want to be in that,
08:32you want to be around that,
08:33and you know,
08:35we were all at Neverland,
08:36and eating the candy,
08:37and having a great time,
08:39and I left thinking,
08:40gosh,
08:41I wish I could be his friend.
08:42Yeah.
08:43It was like a drug.
08:44He was like a drug for me.
08:45I felt like I just always wanted to be around him.
08:47I always wanted to be part of,
08:48I just,
08:48I felt so high.
08:50I've never felt like that around another human being,
08:51except for one,
08:53you know,
08:53which is my father.
08:54So interesting,
08:55because,
08:56you just said it,
08:58you were nine years old when your father died,
09:00never felt that feeling before,
09:02so in many ways,
09:03being with Michael,
09:04brought back that feeling of,
09:07that light falling on you,
09:09that being,
09:10you know,
09:10all of that energy coming your way.
09:13Yes.
09:14Did you feel loved by Michael in the beginning?
09:16Very much so.
09:17I don't think I realized it at the time,
09:19how much,
09:20what that meant,
09:21because I know that that was very unusual for him.
09:23I know he'd had a few dates in his life,
09:25but there was nothing profound for him in that area,
09:30and he fell in love with me,
09:32and I fell in love with him,
09:33and it was very real.
09:35How did he ask you to marry him?
09:37We were in the library,
09:39in front of the fire,
09:40and he pulled this giant 10-carat diamond,
09:43out of his pocket,
09:43and put it on my finger.
09:45I think he got on his knees as well,
09:47and proposed.
09:48And at the time he proposed,
09:50did you think that it would be forever?
09:52I did.
09:53I don't,
09:54you know,
09:54I did.
09:55And when I was younger,
09:56I can honestly say that,
09:57you can think like that,
09:59and believe that.
10:02Mm-hmm.
10:03You know,
10:04from the outside,
10:04it just seemed so,
10:07you know,
10:08two extraordinarily famous people together,
10:12everywhere you went,
10:13seemed somewhat like a circus.
10:15It was.
10:15It's true.
10:16But, you know,
10:17that didn't happen that often.
10:19We were together a lot,
10:21and there was no cameras,
10:22and I think a lot of that was because
10:24the promo for history started to come,
10:27and then we had to appear here,
10:28and do this,
10:28and do that,
10:29and that was all very manipulated,
10:30which I understand comes across
10:33as very manipulated,
10:34period.
10:34Did you ever feel manipulated
10:36in the relationship?
10:37Sometimes,
10:38but he knew I didn't love that,
10:39and he was okay.
10:40He got it.
10:41I mean,
10:41he would,
10:42he needed to do his thing.
10:43I would be there
10:45uncomfortably,
10:46like the MTV thing,
10:48and his hand was blue
10:49after we got off that stage.
10:51I know he showed me,
10:52and it was,
10:53you know,
10:54completely blue.
10:55I squeezed it so hard.
10:56I did not want to do that.
10:58You know,
10:58it was just,
10:59it's not in my nature
11:00to do that sort of thing.
11:01So,
11:02but I understood it.
11:03As his wife,
11:04I had,
11:05you know,
11:05I needed to do some things like that.
11:09Coming up.
11:10You divorced,
11:12and
11:13several months later,
11:15it was announced
11:15that Debbie Rowe was pregnant.
11:17How did you feel about that?
11:29Lisa Marie and Michael Jackson
11:31had been married for a year
11:32when he released
11:33the intimate music video
11:34for You Are Not Alone.
11:38So,
11:39was there a lot of pressure
11:40for you to have a baby?
11:41Yes.
11:42There was quite a bit.
11:43I mean,
11:43he was...
11:43From the time you got married?
11:45Mm-hmm.
11:45There was,
11:46and I did want to.
11:47I just kept,
11:47I just wanted to make sure,
11:49I was looking into the future,
11:50and I was thinking,
11:52I don't ever want to get into
11:53a custody battle with him.
11:55I don't want to do this.
11:56I don't want to go head to head with him.
11:57So,
11:58I need to make sure
11:58that everything around is good.
12:00I know I've had children.
12:01I knew bringing children
12:03into certain circumstances,
12:04you have to make sure
12:05everything's safe
12:05and secure it and okay,
12:07and I wanted to make sure
12:08that he and I
12:09were really,
12:10really united
12:10because we were going
12:11to be up against so much.
12:13I can't remember
12:14the exact month
12:15you all divorced,
12:16but you divorced,
12:20and several months later,
12:22I know by October,
12:24it was announced
12:25that Debbie Rowe was pregnant.
12:26Mm-hmm.
12:28How did you feel about that?
12:30Well,
12:31I knew that it was a bit
12:31of a retaliatory act
12:33on his part
12:37because I didn't,
12:39you know,
12:39have a baby
12:42and I know that she was there
12:44the whole time
12:45telling him she would do it.
12:47You knew that?
12:48He would tell me.
12:49He would come tell me.
12:50If you're not going to do it,
12:51Debbie said she'll do it.
12:52And I was like,
12:53what is that?
12:53Hi.
12:55Not going to entice me.
12:57Um,
12:59so we would get into,
13:01you know,
13:01arguments
13:01because that really
13:03wasn't how to handle it,
13:03but that's how he knew
13:04how to handle it.
13:05I don't want to say,
13:06you know,
13:06he,
13:07like I said,
13:07he would be like,
13:08well,
13:08if you're not going to,
13:09this person will.
13:09Are you going to do it or not?
13:11That's what you mean
13:12by disposable.
13:13Yes.
13:14That's exactly what I mean.
13:16Oh,
13:16I get it.
13:16Well,
13:17there are not many men
13:17who would say,
13:19you either have a baby for me
13:20or I got somebody
13:20standing in the wings.
13:22Right.
13:22And it's,
13:22it sounds,
13:23you know,
13:23it's hindsight 2020.
13:24I understand him so well now.
13:26Um,
13:27but at that time,
13:29I didn't,
13:30I was hurt.
13:30I was hurt.
13:31And,
13:32you know,
13:33I did things
13:34that hurt him,
13:35you know,
13:35and I did stupid things too.
13:37And like,
13:38like,
13:39I was very torn
13:40because I broke up my family
13:42and I left my husband
13:44for Michael
13:45and I was having a hard time
13:48trying to process that.
13:51Lisa Marie was 20 years old
13:53when she married
13:54her first husband,
13:54musician Danny Keough.
13:57Together,
13:57they had two children,
13:58Riley and Ben.
14:00After more than five years together,
14:02Lisa Marie divorced Danny.
14:0420 days later,
14:05she was married again
14:06to Michael Jackson.
14:09While I was with Michael,
14:10I was still trying to process
14:12what I had done.
14:13I never could feel good about it.
14:14I felt like,
14:15how could I have done that to somebody?
14:17And I had these two little ones
14:18and,
14:18um,
14:19Danny was still very much
14:20part of my life.
14:21Michael didn't quite know
14:22what to do with that sometimes.
14:24And that made him uncomfortable
14:25and I understood that.
14:27Michael would wonder,
14:27why are you in Hawaii with Danny?
14:30We would take a vacation
14:31and Danny would go.
14:33and Michael would get upset
14:34and where are you?
14:35And then he would disappear
14:36for a couple weeks
14:37and I couldn't find him.
14:39you know,
14:39things would make him uncomfortable
14:40and when I would do things
14:41that would make Michael uncomfortable,
14:43if he got uncomfortable
14:45or felt vulnerable,
14:47he would ice you out
14:49as a mechanism.
14:50He'd push you away
14:51and ice you.
14:52It was like a shark sometimes
14:54in that way.
14:55You could just,
14:55that's it.
