Naplan scores have revealed entrenched underperformance across Australia's school systems with hundreds of thousands of students failing to grasp basic skills in literacy and numeracy. And South Australian schools are sitting behind most other states ranking FIFTH on many measures but there've been some improvements in numeracy.

00:02At this primary school in Adelaide's West, NAPLAN results are improving.
00:07This year was the first the tests went online, but that didn't faze students.
00:12Personally, I found it normal since I had done it in year three before,
00:17and I was used to using a computer by that time.
00:21Across the country, the statistics are stubbornly poor,
00:25and some experts are increasingly alarmed.
00:28My personal view is that I am very concerned.
00:30My colleague called it a national tragedy.
00:32I would encourage parents not to shy away from it,
00:35but not to be too alarmed because it is one snapshot in time.
00:39Of the more than 1.2 million students to sit NAPLAN this year,
00:4365 per cent met or exceeded expectations,
00:46but one third of students didn't meet the mark.
00:50The results show students from the bush, Indigenous students
00:53and those from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to struggle.
00:57There's a very big inequity in Australia between students
01:00from more advantaged social backgrounds and students from less advantaged backgrounds,
01:04and that's concerning.
01:05In South Australia, the results remain stable,
01:08with some improvements, particularly in numeracy.
01:11But SA remains fifth in most categories, lagging behind other states.
01:17From this year, all South Australian students are getting a numeracy check in year one.
01:21I have got nine teddy bears here.
01:25On top of existing reading checks.
01:27The state government hopes that will filter through to NAPLAN results.
01:31That is why you're seeing us actually doubling down when it comes to phonics and the literacy check,
01:37and then leading the nation in introducing a numeracy check in year one as well.
01:42Parents should already have their children's individual results.
01:45School level report cards will be out later in the year.
