A public high school in Sydney’s south has been named as one of the most improved for the second year in a row. South Sydney High School was among 45 schools singled out for their outstanding achievement in the HSC. The school says their success relied on more than just academics.

00:05Gearing up for their final exam, South Sydney High School in Maroobra is celebrating a major
00:12win.
00:14In 2025, 73% of the school's Year 12 students achieved results in the top three bands, a
00:21rise of 17 percentage points since 2019.
00:25It's important that each student has the ability to do their best.
00:30The school says improving student support, attitudes and even culture was key to its
00:36success.
00:37Another drawcard hosting Netflix series Heartbreak High.
00:41Being in that environment has kind of opened up what people do with their lives and seeing
00:45the actors as well was really interesting.
00:47We reinforce it constantly about being a good person, about being a good citizen.
00:52I think we value that more than the academics.
00:56Banding together to be able to achieve well as a whole year and as a whole school community.
01:02Of 452 public high schools, 45 topped the list of most improved across the state.
01:09Dulwich High School, South Sydney High School and Hunter Sports High School were named on
01:14the list two years in a row.
01:16Last year, the state government set out ambitious new targets for every public school, from improving
01:22academic results to HSE schools and even student attendance, all to be achieved by 2027.
