00:00Little voices and a big issue.
00:06Over a third of Territory students are identified as needing additional support, a rate much
00:14higher than the national average, which is about one in ten.
00:17Northern Territory students have produced the worst NAPLAN results in the country this
00:22year.
00:23Assessed across four year levels in five subjects, the results show on average NT students
00:28have declined in more than three quarters of the assessed areas when compared to last
00:33year.
00:34Looking at the rest of Australia, the Northern Territory performed the poorest in every subject
00:39across year levels.
00:41The NT Education Department also says the Territory's Indigenous student results are
00:45much lower than their interstate counterparts.
00:49The Department of Education says newly launched plans to boost literacy and numeracy rates
00:53will help combat declining NAPLAN rates in the future.
00:56The plans include early year phonic checks, as well as changing the way children are taught
01:01in the classroom, what they're calling explicit teaching.
01:04So starting with the answer rather than the question.
01:07Previously, you might have had a school where the students were given a provocation to explore,
01:14discover, etc.
01:16And then they could go on and have some deep learning around it with the explicit teaching
01:20at the back end.
01:21Explicit instruction is flipping that.
01:23A new approach for the next generation.
