Willard and Dibs react to Anthony Slater's latest article on ESPN about the Warriors offseason and debate if the Warriors are right in saying that no move was the right move.
Transcript
00:00Anthony Slater was on with the morning show.
00:02He is also the owner of what I thought was kind of the manifesto of the Warriors offseason.
00:10This is the article we've been waiting for.
00:12This is the information we've been waiting for.
00:15If you have questions about the Warriors offseason, I'm not saying when you're done reading with it,
00:19you'll be like, oh, the Warriors are smarties.
00:22They did everything right.
00:23You may not feel that way, and I think that's completely understandable.
00:28But if you're sitting here, like I think most of us were, I'll raise my hand, I was.
00:34If you're sitting here, as we're about to get to August, wondering, okay, what is actually going on?
00:42What are they actually thinking?
00:44What are they actually trying?
00:46This article answers those questions.
00:50And so for me, the big takeaway, because this is the first time that Steve Kerr has spoken publicly to
00:56anybody
00:57since that press conference, the big takeaway for me is Steve saying that last line that I shared,
01:04sometimes not making a move can be the best thing you do for your future,
01:08and you keep stacking up good moves, and eventually you pounce when you're ready.
01:14The implication is this was not the right time to pounce.
01:17In other words, the right player is not available at the right price at the right time,
01:22in their opinion.
01:24Yeah.
01:24And so I read this, and I kind of, you know, what's your stages of grief thing?
01:29How many stages are there?
01:30Kubler-Ross.
01:30There's five stages.
01:31I know.
01:32I give it to you, though, because I've never met Kubler.
01:34Or Ross.
01:35Yeah.
01:35They all go in different order, and, you know, you don't necessarily go through a progression
01:40one through five, but there's anger is one, and I think a lot of fans have been there
01:45over the last few days.
01:45They said bargaining, which is, you know, if they stay healthy and you cut down on those
01:50turnovers, they could still be a seven seed or an eight seed.
01:54There's acceptance, which I kind of think is where you are right now, which is Anthony
01:58Slater lays it out.
01:59This is the way it's going to be, and you don't have to love it, but you can accept it.
02:05Can you?
02:06I think that's the question I would love to ask everybody today.
02:10The other stage is denial, and you could be sitting there thinking, I can't believe that
02:15they're done.
02:16I don't believe that this is going to be the team going forward.
02:18I mean, there has to still be something.
02:21I'm in denial.
02:22I believe that the denial phase was how so many of us, and I don't want to make it sound
02:29like we got schnookered.
02:30I don't think we got schnookered.
02:31They tried.
02:33They tried to get LeBron James.
02:34That was real.
02:35Well, whether or not that was ever even the slightest possibility, I know it's always easy
02:42whenever you don't get someone for everybody to go, ha-ha, he's stupid.
02:47He thought he never had a chance.
02:49It's like, you don't know that.
02:51I have no idea what's in a free agent's mind, and a lot of different things make a lot of
02:56people tick.
02:57I think through the years, we fall back on, it's always money.
03:00It's always money.
03:01Well, this clearly was not.
03:02This clearly was not money.
03:04You know, did the Giants ever really have a chance at Aaron Judge?
03:08I don't know.
03:09Guys don't usually leave the pinstripes.
03:11Did they have a real chance at Bryce Harper?
03:13I believe they did.
03:15But you can move on believing whatever you want.
03:18Was it a pipe dream?
03:19Was it stupid?
03:19They tried.
03:21But that process of us spending the better part of three weeks on LeBron watch is what
03:29you just detailed.
03:31Denial.
03:32It was the denial of the idea of the Warriors doing nothing, bringing in no one.
03:39I was in complete denial.
03:41It wasn't so much about LeBron.
03:43It was just what LeBron represented.
03:45Oh, I get it.
03:46They're doing something.
03:47No.
03:48No, they're not going to do anything.
03:50And so today, I think we get the explanation and maybe some people will be there today.
03:58Maybe some people will take some time and some will never get there.
04:02I wonder, 888-957-9570, do you accept this or not?
04:08The Warriors have openly admitted they will be adding essentially no new names this offseason
04:14because they believe that it is not the right time to pounce.
04:18The opportunity does not fit.
04:20It does not make sense.
04:21Do you accept that or not?
04:22I'm at the other stage of grief that I didn't mention, which is depression.
04:27That's the fifth stage of grief.
04:29And again, they don't go in any particular order.
04:32I've never really been that angry.
04:35I have done a lot of bargaining and the denial you just laid out was perfect
04:38because I was just thinking back to the Aaron Judge situation.
04:42And we did a show in Linden, his hometown, because we thought that he would...
04:47It's top 15.
04:48Yeah, I was going to say, 12th greatest moment in the history of this...
04:50It's a top 15 moment.
04:51Anyway, go ahead.
04:54You talk about being in denial.
04:56I went to the boss and pitched this cockamamie idea.
04:59You guys got on board.
05:00He thought it was great.
05:01Engineering did it.
05:03We go out to a drafty Elks club thinking, this is going to be it.
05:07He's coming.
05:08We're in his hometown.
05:09You know what?
05:09I want to have your back for a second.
05:11And I know you're just being glib.
05:13Totally.
05:14I thought it was genius.
05:15Yeah, it can't be cockamamie and also the 12th greatest moment that's ever happened
05:20on the radio station.
05:20Especially when the show goes the way the show went, which is we got no guests
05:24and we all got driven to the county line.
05:27I don't know for sure that we were on air.
05:31You never know.
05:32Has that ever been confirmed?
05:34Like we were...
05:35God, I wish we could paint this picture for you.
05:38I remember listening.
05:39Okay.
05:40Unfortunately.
05:41Thanks.
05:42Thanks, Randy.
05:42Long four hours.
05:44No, but I wish you could paint a picture.
05:47And I, you know, like have you ever been to, you ever see a sign sitting in the weeds
05:53when you're driving on the road in your town, wherever you live?
05:56And it's like, coming up this Sunday, pancake breakfast.
06:01Oh, yeah.
06:01Okay.
06:02You ever go to those?
06:03Yeah.
06:04Have you actually gone?
06:05For sure.
06:05You show up and it's probably like plastic forks and knives and plastic plates and people
06:11sitting around there with collared shirts that are buttoned all the way up on a hot day.
06:15And hey, how you doing?
06:17Come sit down.
06:18That was the energy of the entire day.
06:20We were in a room at a folding table with folding chairs that got pulled out when we arrived.
06:27And some guy who appeared to be named Biff, I don't remember his name, but a guy, he's
06:33just like, you know, you all got what you need.
06:36And we're like, we think so, Biff.
06:38I don't know.
06:39And we have an engineer who is the greatest in the business, but he gets off on a challenge,
06:44which I think is why he thought it was a good idea.
06:47He didn't give a rip about Aaron Judge.
06:49He's just like, let me show you that I could do a show from Linden in the middle of nowhere.
06:54And we got producers walking around at gas stations.
06:57I don't know what the hell we were doing out there, but we did it.
07:00We were in denial over the reality that is people don't leave the Yankees and he's just
07:06not coming to the Giants.
07:07And this LeBron thing, the more you look back at it and he wants to be close to his family.
07:12He wants to play with his buddies.
07:14Chase Center is maybe the best thing going.
07:17Yeah, he's going to bring Ronnie too.
07:19He'll be close to his daughter and he can take a helicopter or a jet back and forth all
07:24he wants.
07:25Denial.
07:26He was never going to come here and they knew it.
07:28But who knew?
07:30Steph.
07:31Draymond.
07:31Steve Kerr.
07:32Remember what I said?
07:33I worked myself to a spot where every single answer sounded ridiculous.
07:37I don't argue with you.
07:39You're right.
07:40The Warrior thing, there was definitely the possibility that we're like, this is, we're being sold a bill
07:45of goods.
07:45That doesn't make any sense to me, but I didn't think any of the others did either.
07:48I told you so many people, so many people I heard say, there's no way LeBron's playing
07:57for the minimum.
07:58There's no way he's playing for the mid-level.
08:00Yeah.
08:01You're telling me he made 52 last year and I'm supposed to believe that this guy is
08:06just going to take 15?
08:08That's a huge pay cut.
08:10He took four.
08:11Right.
08:12How much did he take?
08:13Four.
08:14That's right.
08:16Gene Hackman, he passed away, right?
08:18If I say yes and I'm wrong, then it's just right on break.
08:21No, he did.
08:21He did.
08:22Okay.
08:22Rest in peace.
08:23Four.
08:24Anyway.
08:25How many years ago did he pass away?
08:27I think he was last four.
08:27Have you already last year?
08:28Yeah.
08:29Yeah.
08:29One.
08:30Yeah.
08:31So anyway, yeah.
08:35That's something that was not believable was going to happen.
08:39I guess that's my point.
08:40So when people go, that's dumb.
08:42Why is he going to go play with a bunch of old people at Golden State?
08:45I'm like, well, something that doesn't make sense is going to happen.
08:48And something that didn't make sense happened.
08:50LeBron took the minimum salary.
08:53And the Warriors have done nothing.
08:54And so that's why I sit and wallow in a certain amount of depression because, you know, the
09:01scene in February, even like that is seven months away and next summer is a full year
09:06away.
09:07So you're going to be rolling out this group and not that they have to be a championship
09:12team.
09:12And, you know, Steph's quote was even in this piece about that, but even the idea of trying
09:17to fight out of the play in tournament right now.
09:20OK, I think there's some there's a conversation to have about that, this idea that this year
09:26is just automatically going to look like last year because they didn't make any moves.
