00:00But now after, of course, like you've won plenty of times, you've won on the PGA Tour, but now being
00:05the champion golfer of the year, have things changed now in the perception of Ryan Fox in New Zealand?
00:11Are you suddenly now, you know, oh yeah, I think Grant Fox, that's Ryan Fox's dad.
00:17You know, like is it, have things started to kind of done a little switcheroo here in the last couple
00:21of days?
00:22Well, I think there's an argument that it probably will.
00:26I think so.
00:27We're heading back to New Zealand tonight to kind of go back and just like experience it while it's still
00:35fresh, you know, hit it, see friends and family, obviously a fair bit of media and other commitments that I'll
00:41have to do down there.
00:42But I think I'll get a pretty good gauge on it in the next 48 hours if something's changed.
00:48I mean, I think dad will say it's changed, whether Rugby Mad New Zealand says it's changed will be another
00:55thing.
00:56But yeah, look, it's pretty cool for New Zealand regardless.
01:00We've only had four major champions now with Lydia, Sir Bob Charles, Michael Campbell, and now myself.
01:05We haven't had the Claret Jug make it to New Zealand for 63 years.
01:12So yeah, it's going to be, I think this is pretty big for New Zealand sport.
01:15Well, I know you're so proud, Ryan, and seeing that beautiful trophy behind you.
01:19I imagine just it's surreal being able to look at that and seeing your name on the trophy.
01:25But also, you know, when you're traveling with a trophy from a destination to where you live, I think everybody's
01:31seen the picture of you on the airplane trying to jam the Claret Jug, in its case, into the overhead
01:37bend.
01:38But I also know, like, you're a father, and you're very aware of traveling with plenty of items that you're
01:44either trying to gate check or trying to fit in your overhead carry space.
01:48Was this ever something that was considered as a pink tag item that might have been gate checked?
01:53Or would you have just gotten off the plane if that thing wouldn't have fit underneath your seat or the
01:58overhead bend?
01:59Yeah, look, it was an interesting Monday.
02:02I'm not, I had no sleep.
02:04So trying to deal with it all, like, figure out what I was going to do with these things, trying
02:09to get them through the airport.
02:11Like, they gave me two of them.
02:13Like, I've got the replica, I've got the real one, obviously, which is behind me.
02:17They both come in, like, identical carry cases, which are really big.
02:22And we'd had the conversation just before I left, like, you probably should try to just get these on the
02:28plane.
02:29Like, my agent and my coach were like, don't check them, man.
02:32Like, that's badass.
02:34And to be fair, like, you don't want to be that guy that, like, randomly loses the claret jug while
02:39checking it in on an airline.
02:41So I, like, I meekly got up to the check-in agent on Monday morning, feeling very sorry for myself
02:48at 5.30 in the morning with these two boxes and go,
02:53So, yeah, I've got some, like, special cargo here.
02:56Like, is there any chance I can just take these on the plane?
02:59I've got my track, man.
03:00I've got my backpack.
03:01Like, I've got a suitcase, golf bag.
03:03Like, I'm all over the place.
03:05And she goes, what's in it?
03:07I was like, you know, like, it's a claret jug, the Open Championship trophy, like, you know, the oldest trophy
03:12in golf.
03:13And then I was like, did you win it?
03:15I'm like, um, yeah.
03:18She's like, uh, like, normally, normally, like, if it's a Premier League trophy or something, they call and you get,
03:24like, chaperoned and stuff.
03:25I was like, this happened late last night.
03:27Like, I still don't really know what happened.
03:29Like, can I just take it through?
03:31She's like, yep, no problem.
03:32Gives me the couple of little, like, carry-on bag tags.
03:36You know, so I take it through security, get a few questions here and there, what's in it.
03:40A couple of people did recognize me.
03:42It did make it a little bit easier getting through and, um, yeah, get on the plane.
03:47Um, you know, as I'm walking to the plane, well, as I, as I walk to check in, Cam Young's
03:53in front of me in the line to check in.
03:54So, like, I feel a little bit guilty as it is walking in there with that.
03:59Um, you know, then I'm walking to the plane, talking to him with the rolling these two things.
04:04And then we get on the plane and I'm holding everyone up, trying to figure out how they fit over
04:09the head and jamming them in.
04:11And then, like, like, like, like, being a dad, you're really conscious of that stuff because you hate holding people
04:17on a plane, putting all your crap in overhead lockers.
04:20Like, so I'm doing it with two big, big suitcases and trying not to whack people with my backpack at
04:25the same time.
04:26And, like, it was, it was a mess.
04:28I was a mess.
04:29Um, so I get it in.
04:31I've taken, I couldn't even get them in the overhead compartments near me.
04:34Like, there are a couple of seats further back.
04:35So, I, I stole someone else's space.
04:39And, yeah, like, it was, like, I mean, it was cool, but it was, like, very strange at the same
04:45time.
04:45And then when we got off the plane, I'm like, there's no way I'm waiting to get, I'm going to
04:51hold everyone up to get these things off.
04:53I've got some time before my next flight.
04:55Like, let's just wait till everyone gets off.
04:57And I can do this peacefully, calmly, like, you know, no, no rush, no banging, just get it out.
05:05So, I waited for everyone to get off the plane.
05:07It was pretty cool.
05:08Like, half the plane said, well done on the way out.
05:10So, that was, that was kind of worth, you know, waiting for that anyway.
05:14And then, you know, I kind of made my way to, to the gate to go to Miami.
05:18Did the same, got a couple of looks doing the same thing to, to go to Miami.
05:23But it was, it was a little bit easier on the next flight.
05:26It was a slightly bigger plane and more overhead, overhead space.
05:30So, yeah, that, that did make it a little easier.
