Willard and Dibs debate if the Warriors are more interested in life after Steph Curry than their current reality with 38-year-old Steph Curry.
Transcript
00:01Tim Kawakami, TK Show, is what he said.
00:06What Lacob wants to do, and this might get Warriors fans mad,
00:08but he wants to build the next team after Steph Curry.
00:11I don't know how possible that is, but Lacob has a very keen interest in,
00:14I'm going to show, or whatever, this organization is going to show
00:17what it can do with Steph Curry and then after Steph Curry.
00:20I don't think it's going to be as good myself, but that's what he wants to do.
00:24Good prediction, Tim. I agree with you.
00:26Yeah.
00:27You think it's not going to be as good as when Steph was here, huh?
00:30Me too.
00:31Well, I mean, it could be.
00:33It's allowed to be.
00:34Well, you could, I mean, play it out in the Spurs model where, you know,
00:39the Spurs had David Robinson get hurt, and you won the lottery,
00:43and you got Tim Duncan.
00:45I don't think that there's a Tim Duncan in next year's draft,
00:47although looking at the mock draft for next year,
00:50all of you people who are looking already at the Warriors in the lottery,
00:54you're going to want to watch Eurobasket because a lot of these guys are European.
00:58So, I don't think that there is a Wemby or a LeBron or a Duncan.
01:03So, yeah, I mean, they're allowed to be, right?
01:05Well, but that's just next year.
01:07Maybe we, should Joe Lacob's own words be used against him?
01:12How many years did he give the Valkyries just born last year?
01:17How many years did they have to win a championship before everybody is accountable?
01:21I would try to go to the LeBron cut, but actually it is five.
01:25Five.
01:25It's not five.
01:26It is five.
01:27Five.
01:28And this is year two, and yeah.
01:30And they're in the hopper.
01:33They're in the hopper.
01:34So, I'm sure Joe is pleased, as he should be, with the Valkyries' performance.
01:40Man, for them to put this together this quickly, wonderful.
01:43Tremendous, tremendous.
01:46And yes, he is a huge piece of that.
01:48So, he deserves a ton of credit for what the Valkyries are doing.
01:52Now, they haven't even won a playoff game yet.
01:55So, I'm going to, you know, hit the brakes on the parade there.
02:00But they've been overachievers from day one.
02:03So, I'll give them that credit.
02:06Okay.
02:06Warriors after Steph.
02:08Should we do that?
02:09When Steph retires, do we start a five-year clock?
02:12All right.
02:13Do it again, Joe.
02:14You got five years to win another ring.
02:17And if you don't do it, then we say, oh, this has been a failure.
02:26Again, I'm just, I'm spitballing here, and I'm trying to figure out the question,
02:32even though what actually gets me, and Tim said it right there in that bite,
02:38boy, this might upset Warrior fans.
02:40You can go ahead and take the might right out of it there, Tim.
02:43And Tim knows this very well.
02:45That is absolutely going to tick off Warrior fans.
02:49If what Joe is doing, and again, this is only an implication.
02:53I don't think this is necessarily what anyone has directly said.
02:57But if he is more motivated to prove to people that he can do this again,
03:04as opposed to the motivation that he still has for the moment,
03:08then a Warrior fan has every right to be livid, quite frankly.
03:11You could be mad.
03:12I mean, you can, I don't know if you could be livid,
03:14because what Joe Lacob was a big part of building,
03:17and he was not here when Steph got drafted,
03:19but he was a part of what got built.
03:22And you go to Rick Welts, who was a great front office executive.
03:26You go to Jerry West, who he brought in,
03:28and Bob Myers, who got elevated,
03:29and all the rest of the things that he was a part of as the owner,
03:33and they won four titles.
03:34So I don't know if you can be, quote, livid.
03:37I mean, you're allowed to be whatever you want to be.
03:39Yeah, you can be.
03:39You're a fan, and I get that, and some fans are already livid,
03:42because it's been four whole years since they won a title.
03:46It's been four years, Mark.
03:48Yeah, but that's a long time.
03:50Okay, let's pick that apart, though.
03:51That's where I think the fans get upset when they get called spoiled.
03:57And I think there are some spoiled fans,
04:00but that's not what this is about for me.
04:03I'm like, can we try to separate these two things?
04:08Warriors, you've done a wonderful job.
04:11Who the hell would argue against that?
04:15I know there's a lot of people.
04:16Actually, I see them on social media.
04:18They think everybody's a clown show all the time.
04:21Everybody.
04:22Everybody's a clown all the time.
04:24All right?
04:25They've been in power here for 15 years or so.
04:28They've got four rings.
04:29So if you're upset, yeah, that's a you problem.
04:32Go for a walk.
04:33Get some fresh air.
04:34But this isn't about what was.
04:36This is more about the philosophy of now.
04:40So I can't.
04:41You're right.
04:42I can't argue with the outcomes.
04:44I can't argue with the resume that's been built.
04:48But I can argue with the philosophy of the moment.
04:52To me, that's fair.
04:53That's fair.
04:53It's not about the results.
04:55It's about the philosophy.
04:56And if the philosophy is, and I don't know this, but I'm asking the question.
05:01And Joe, I wish he had all of our cell phone numbers.
05:04You could text us.
05:06Are you more into later than now?
05:09Because I don't like that.
05:11I don't think anybody likes that.
05:13And I'm not saying that you should ignore the future and YOLO and let's just do all now.
05:19And why don't you send out eight picks?
05:21Who gives a rip?
05:22I don't want you to be the Rams.
05:23They're a little crazy.
05:25I know it's fun.
05:25And they're a little crazy sometimes.
05:27And football's different.
05:28And football's different.
05:28For sure.
05:29But if you're kind of cruising around hearing the voices wanting to prove to everybody that you can do this
05:37again while Steph is still performing at a high level, that's a philosophy with which I don't agree.
05:43And I hope that's not the case.
05:45I wonder what you could actually do right now that would make that work.
05:49So if you look at the Jalen Brown piece and let's just say that Boston called you back and said,
05:54yeah, sorry, we'll take Jimmy, but we need four firsts and they're all going to be unprotected.
06:01Like, we're going to need four firsts in 27, 29, 31, and 33.
06:06And we'll take Jimmy because, I mean, we have to.
06:10And you get Jalen.
06:11And that's the offer that the Warriors got.
06:14If I'm the Warriors and I'm Joe Lacob or Mike Dunleavy, that's a no.
06:18That, to me, is too rich.
06:20And I love Jalen Brown.
06:21He's a great player.
06:22And he's only going to be here for three years because he's making major, major money for, is it three
06:28years or four years?
06:29Whatever it is, he's going to be making massive money.
06:32So in the short term, while Steph is here, you've got Jalen, you've got Steph, and you've got a bunch
06:38of people making a lot less than that.
06:40Are you good enough in the short term?
06:42No, you're not.
06:42Right.
06:43But that's not what was reported to be the reason.
06:46I'm with you.
06:47I agree with you.
06:48That's too rich.
06:49And guess what?
06:50The market agreed with you as well.
06:52Four first-round picks was too rich.
06:54He ended up going for two.
06:56I understand there were a couple second-rounders.
06:58There was Paul George.
06:59Those things are kind of whatever as far as the deal.
07:01I think Paul George is more than whatever, but you and I disagree, and we'll see this year.
07:05I think that you can tell when somebody is just a salary matcher.
07:08Jalen Brown and Paul George are not on the same planet right now as far as players.
07:12Yes, Paul is, in theory, healthy, but give me a break.
07:15It's not like he plays tons of games either.
07:18We played every game in the playoffs, and he averaged about 15 a game.
07:21He's not the Paul George he used to be.
07:23Yeah, he went on a nice run for a few weeks in the playoffs.
07:27I'm just saying I think what leads the way in trades in 2026 in the NBA are first-round draft
07:34picks.
07:35And so that's sort of how I usually judge these things.
07:38Put it this way.
07:40Jimmy Butler and four firsts to me is a bigger offer than Paul George and two firsts.
07:45And so the Celtics started in February with offers around four first-round draft picks,
07:51and then they did not get that, which means that over time, as they canvassed the league,
07:55that offer went down.
07:57So especially, to your point, in February, I would have also said no.
08:02But my reason, and your reason, is that's too much.
08:08Our reason was not, I don't know if Jalen Brown's going to be good three years from now.
08:14I don't like that reason at all.
08:16That's what bothers me about this, this report.
08:20Again, I know it's just a report.
08:21It's somebody saying somebody else said this, that, or the other.
08:25But I don't like the idea that the Golden State Warriors have built all of this optionality
08:32and they are seemingly so hesitant to kind of really go in on something to help out Steph Curry
08:41because they're actually more motivated about what happens next.
08:46That doesn't feel good to me.
08:47I think it depends on the player, and I think that they were more willing to do whatever,
08:52four firsts and a couple swaps for Giannis at the deadline
08:55because Giannis, in their eyes, was more of a future centerpiece than Jalen Brown.
09:01And we could 888-957-9570.
09:04Who would you rather have for the next eight years, Giannis or Jalen Brown?
09:07And it might run 50-50.
09:09They're different players.
09:10And, you know, Giannis has had a little bit of an injury history,
09:13and Jalen Brown's got a calf or an Achilles that may be a thing.
09:17I don't know what the difference is.
09:19I'm also struck by the fact that Boston was pretty willing to let him go.
09:24And I know long-term you probably can't pay them both.
09:27Like, next year it would have been Tatum making 62,
09:30and you'd have Brown making 57, and that's not really sustainable anymore.
09:36But for the Warriors to not think that he could be the future after Steph Curry,
09:41it's a judgment.
09:42But I don't think that they have been shying away from trying to at least explore things.
09:47Definitely not. Definitely not.
09:49I mean, they've actually got the reputation, as you know, of big-game hunters.
09:53In fact, every reporter out there, as long as Joe Lacob's in charge, it's big-game hunting.
09:59Well, that's interesting because they're either poor at hunting
10:05or they're not actually big-game hunters.
10:08One or the other is factually true because they have pulled off,
10:12and the one deal that they continue to say,
10:14hey, hey, hey, we made our big move was actually, let's be real.
10:19In the end, you and I didn't necessarily love the deal the day it happened.
10:24We were at Splash.
10:25We were at Splash.
10:26Didn't love the deal.
10:27I've taken the L on that.
10:29I now think...
10:30Yeah, it was the right move to make at the right time,
10:32so I'm not ripping the deal, but let's not call that a big, massive deal.
10:39It's a big name, but Jimmy Butler was at odds with his current team
10:46and came on the cheap.
10:48You'd been trying to deal Andrew Wiggins for two years,
10:52and you gave up 1-1 in a year that you knew you were going to finish as a playoff
10:59team.
11:00Um, that's not that big of a deal.
11:04It's not that big of a risk that they took with Jimmy Butler.
11:09So, all of these huge names that they hunt, okay?
11:15Giannis and Kawhi and Kevin Durant.
11:20Laurie Markkinen.
11:21Laurie Markkinen.
11:23One of two things has happened with every single pursuit.
11:26You either didn't have the goods to get him,
11:30or you decided to hold on to your assets.
11:34So, is he really a big game hunter?
11:36I think so, but it's a little bit like poker,
11:39and I know you've played a lot of Texas Hold'em poker,
11:43where, I mean, you get your two cards,
11:45and you look, and you might have King Jack.
11:47You make it sound like I got a bunch of visors in my closet.
11:50No, but I mean...
11:51And the garage is open on a Saturday night.
11:53I'm a dude, and you have friends, and when you have friends,
11:56and you're a guy, like, you get into a spot where you play poker,
12:01and, you know, I went to Palm Springs on my fraternity retreat,
12:05and part of the golf event was, it's poker night.
12:07And so, whatever, it was a prepaid thing.
12:10So, I'm playing poker.
12:11You might get dealt like King Nine of spades, suited.
12:15And you're thinking, okay, it's a maybe.
12:18And then the three people in front of you, they all, like,
12:20they raise, they raise, they raise.
12:22It's like, no, no, we're not doing that.
12:24We're not going to raise on a King Nine,
12:26or, you know, whatever the suit would be.
12:28I'm not a poker guy enough to know what, like,
12:30would be playable or not playable,
12:32but I do think that the Warriors have had some hands.
12:35They've had some cards.
12:36They have assets, and they're thinking,
12:38no, we're not going to do this.
12:40We're going to try this.
12:41And, you know, maybe you go in a little bit,
12:44and then somebody raises, and you're out.
12:45And I think that that's kind of where Joe Lacob is right now.
12:48Yeah, I mean, again, I just,
12:52you can want to be a big game hunter,
12:55but it doesn't make you a big game hunter.
12:58So, that's not like an accusation.
13:01I'm not pointing a finger here.
13:03I'm just saying that you can get involved
13:07in every single conversation.
13:08You can go to the bar and ask every single girl out.
13:12If you go home alone, you're not that dude.
13:16No, but you were big game hunting.
13:17But you're not a player.
13:19But you go to the SI swimsuit.
13:21You won't crush a lot.
13:22You go to the, thank you.
13:23Is that Fat Joe?
13:26Yeah.
13:26You go to the SI swimsuit model party.
13:29You somehow get in, and you, like,
13:32you're big game hunting on all 24 of them,
13:35and you go 0 for 24.
13:36You were big game hunting.
13:40Not really.
13:41I mean, you were.
13:43Not really.
13:44Like, and you're not a big.
13:46I think that analogy ran its course,
13:47but you know what I'm saying?
13:47You're not a big taxidermy guy.
13:49Like, if you go to my house,
13:51and you think, oh, Dibs, he's a big game hunter,
13:53and you go into my house,
13:55and I've got a squirrel mounted.
13:57I've got a bunny rabbit.
13:59I've got.
14:00I'm actually, I'm very,
14:01are you comfortable when you walk into someone's house,
14:04and they've got animal heads on their walls?
14:06It's not that I'm uncomfortable.
14:08I don't like what the hell's going on in here.
14:09I just, I've never been.
14:10No judgment, but I just.
14:12No judgment.
14:12Yeah, I don't want that thing looking at me.
14:15Don't look, like, I just, we're good here.
14:17I don't need now the thought of, like,
14:19tell me the story of when you shot that.
14:22I just, anyway.
14:23If you wanted to list the top 100 hobbies in America,
14:26I think that my bottom three would be,
14:29in no order, spelunking.
14:32I don't even know what that is.
14:33That's when you go through caves.
14:35Okay.
14:36Gigging?
14:38You know what?
14:39Something about grabbing a frog.
14:41Like, I'm going to grab you, frog.
14:43I'm not going to, like, choke you out and eat your legs,
14:46but the sport of it, like, shooting an animal,
14:51and probably fishing.
14:52I just, I don't have the patience for it,
14:55but anyway, like, big game hunting,
14:57you could be a big game hunter
14:58and not ever get big game.
15:00I was thinking about fishing just yesterday, actually,
15:02because my son is really, really into it,
15:05and I.
15:08The big fella, right?
15:09Yeah.
15:09And I liked going with him,
15:12but I started thinking about this.
15:14I'm like, man, he's about to move out,
15:17and will I ever go fishing again
15:20if he's not here?
15:21And I'm like, no.
15:23I wouldn't even know what the hell to do.
15:25Right.
15:25I never graduated past when I caught a fish.
15:28I'd be like, hey, I caught a fish.
15:32We got to let this thing go.
15:33What do I do?
15:34What do I do with it?
15:35So, yeah, I'm not really all that into it either.
15:38I just wanted time with my kid.
15:39My father-in-law, Pop Pop, is an elite fly fisherman,
15:44so he goes on trips all the time,
15:46and he's into it, he's good at it,
15:48and his son and his grandson,
15:49and they'll catch fish, and then they'll fillet it,
15:53and you'll eat the fish, and that's great.
15:54I mean, I'm all about it.
15:56If you're going to catch and not release,
15:58then at least catch and fillet and eat it.
16:01Yeah, like get some dinner.
16:02Exactly.
16:03So, anyway, for me, big game hunting,
16:06like that to me is not super fun,
16:08but even if you go big game hunting
16:10and you don't catch big game,
16:11you're still big game hunting.
16:13I mean, sure.
16:14Okay.
16:16Now we're in the area of Yoda.
16:18Like, there is no try.
16:20I mean, you've spent five years on this show
16:23getting mad at me for Super Bowl or try again.
16:25Right.
16:26It's all about the results, I thought.
16:28Big game hunt or try again.
16:29It's all about the results, right?
16:31Is it process or result?
16:33I'm results, you're a process.
16:34All right, well, what are the results?
16:35Ain't no big game.
16:37There's no big game.
16:39But the process.
16:40Who are the big game?
16:41But you're a process guy.
16:42I am.
16:42And I don't like the process.
16:44That's what I'm pointing at.
16:46You need to trust it.
16:47I don't.
16:48I don't.
16:49The process is exactly what I'm pointing at.
16:53If right now the Warriors are saying
16:56we are averse to the idea of
17:00and if you thought Jalen Brown was a bad deal
17:03then fine.
17:04You think that's a bad deal.
17:05But if you get an offer
17:06that you believe is a good deal
17:08in the moment
17:09but you pass on it
17:11because you're worried about
17:13the way it positions you
17:15in 2030
17:16or 2029
17:19when Steph's not here
17:21and what's actually motivating you
17:23in your belly.
17:24Like that'd be my question for Joe
17:26and I don't know if he'd give
17:27an honest answer publicly.
17:29What is getting you up in the morning?
17:32We know Joe's competitive.
17:34We know Joe's a very good owner.
17:36Joe wants to win
17:38and Joe will put his money
17:40where his mouth is.
17:41As a fan that's all I can ask
17:42of whoever owns the team.
17:45But
17:46what gets you up in the morning?
17:49October
17:51or 2030?
17:53And if 2030 right now
17:55is what's getting him up
17:56in the morning
17:57I don't
17:58prefer that.
17:59That's what I will say.
18:01That is not a good thing
18:02for the Golden State Warriors.
18:04That is not a good thing
18:05for Steph Curry
18:06and that is not a good thing
18:07for Steph Curry
18:08finishing his career
18:09as a Golden State Warrior.
18:10Ultimately you have to have
18:11your hand in each pot
18:13and you know
18:14as an owner
18:14you definitely have to worry
18:15about October
18:16and 2030
18:17because
18:17when Steph is gone
18:19and I'm assuming 2030
18:20he is gone
18:21and Steve's gone
18:22and Draymond
18:23and whatever
18:23Al Horford's still here
18:24at 46
18:25whatever the machinations are
18:27he is the only one
18:29in that group
18:29who has to actually
18:30worry about 2030.
18:31No doubt.
18:32No doubt.
18:33I'm not saying ignore it
18:34but is that what gets you
18:36up in the morning?
18:37Is that guy brushing
18:39his teeth thinking
18:41I'm going to show this world
18:44that I can own.
18:46I can warrior
18:48without number 30.
18:50Well and he has
18:51like he owns
18:52and it
18:53Now without 30.
18:54Correct.
18:55But he bought it for what
18:56440 million
18:57or whatever
18:58and now it's worth 10 billion
18:59and
19:00You're never going to
19:00no one who actually
19:02wants to be fair
19:04like if you want a social media
19:05for your life
19:06do it.
19:06If you want to actually
19:07read, watch, listen
19:10and understand
19:11nobody's going to challenge
19:12what Joe Lacob has achieved
19:14as the Warriors owner.
19:16It's been an absolutely
19:17phenomenal
19:18home run success story
19:20but I just want to know
19:22what
19:23what gets him up
19:24in the morning.
19:24What floats his boat?
19:25Yeah.
19:26Is it
19:27is it now
19:28or is it then
19:29and if it's then
19:31that's a problem
19:33it's a problem
19:34if that's what is
19:35really
19:36really firing him up.
19:38I would bet it's both
19:39but at the same time
19:40like the now
19:42okay four first round picks
19:43for Jalen Brown
19:44that's the now
19:45I don't even know
19:46if I
19:47I think that's a good deal
19:48and the then is
19:49well Steph's gone
19:51and we've got
19:53optionality grandy
19:54we've got it
19:55we've got picks
19:56and you know what
19:57we're a destination
19:58and in 2030
20:00we can go out there
20:01and get
20:02the free agent
20:03who's going to pop free
20:04because
20:04we're us
20:05and you know
20:06we're the thing.
20:07You know
20:07it's interesting
20:11it's a conundrum
20:12dude
20:12I get it
20:13I get it
20:14I get it
20:15and Joe realizes
20:16that he's
20:17either going to be
20:18criticized now
20:19or criticized then
20:20that's the deal
20:22like let's say
20:23that he did get
20:24Jalen Brown
20:25for four first round
20:26draft picks
20:27and let's say
20:27the Warriors
20:28went on a deep
20:29ish
20:29playoff run
20:31okay
20:31conference semifinals
20:34and that was fun
20:35and Steph got to do that
20:37and then Steph and Draymond
20:39leave
20:39and Steve Kerr leaves
20:40and you've got
20:41Jalen Brown
20:42and you're really
20:43really
20:44you're kind of
20:45out of draft capital
20:46at that time
20:47and the team
20:48starts to tailspin
20:49a little bit
20:50he can get ripped
20:52like the same people
20:54who are sitting here
20:55right now
20:55going
20:56you've wasted
20:58Steph Curry's
20:59career
20:59those same people
21:01will be sitting there
21:02three years from now
21:03going
21:04I can't believe
21:05you didn't have
21:06the foresight
21:07to not dump
21:09all of your draft
21:10capital
21:10when your star
21:11was about to turn 40
21:13so he knows that
21:14and I get that
21:16we are asking
21:17for him
21:18to walk
21:19a very tight rope
21:21that's why
21:22I'm not making it
21:23about any particular
21:24one deal
21:25not to me
21:26about Jalen
21:27or Giannis
21:28or Kawhi
21:29or Kevin
21:30it is about
21:32what Joe
21:33what really
21:35drives him
21:35right now
21:36and I have
21:37no problem
21:38if he sees
21:39both as important
21:40that's his job
21:41now and the future
21:43you can think
21:44about both
21:44but if you're
21:45prioritizing
21:46and actually
21:48what's really
21:48driving you
21:49is you want
21:50to prove
21:50to this world
21:51that this organization
21:53and the brand
21:54are bigger
21:54than Steph
21:55that's troubling
21:57that's very troubling
21:59it's risky
21:59and I think
22:00Warrior fans
22:01rightfully so
22:02have a very hard
22:02time imagining
22:04anything
22:04that's going
22:05to come along
22:06anytime soon
22:07probably in our
22:08lifetime
22:09that would rival
22:10what Steph Curry
22:12has done
22:12think about the Bulls
22:13and I'm looking
22:14at it here
22:14where you win
22:15your sixth title
22:16in eight years
22:17in 1998
22:17and the owner
22:18makes it clear
22:19that well coach
22:20you're gone
22:21and therefore
22:22you're all gone
22:22it's the last dance
22:23and you win the title
22:25and then the next year
22:26you're able to get
22:27the number one
22:28overall pick
22:29and it's Elton Brand
22:30and then you get
22:31the number four pick
22:32the year after that
22:33Marcus Fizer
22:34then you get
22:34Eddie Curry
22:35the number four pick
22:36then you get
22:37the number two pick
22:38Jay Williams
22:38like you are
22:40racking up lottery picks
22:41and you're thinking
22:41you know what
22:43I own the Bulls
22:44we're rolling
22:45like Michael Jordan
22:46whatever
22:47we got like
22:48lottery lottery
22:49lottery lottery
22:49and then you know
22:50Jay Williams gets hurt
22:51and Marcus Fizer
22:52was a bust
22:53and then Kirk Heinrich
22:54at seven
22:55Ben Gordon at three
22:56and on and on
22:57it goes
22:57but the Bulls
22:58you realize
22:59have won five
23:00series
23:01since the last title
23:03in 28 years
23:04no it usually
23:05doesn't work
23:06that most draft
23:07picks don't work
23:08right but even
23:09when even the ones
23:10that do
23:10it's like that
23:11doesn't mean
23:11you're gonna win
23:12a title out of it
23:13like Derek Rose
23:14that was the right
23:15pick
23:15that worked
23:16and then his
23:16body fell apart
23:17and so to your
23:18point though
23:19like the Bulls
23:20is a cautionary tale
23:21where they thought
23:22that yeah
23:23I mean
23:24we can go ahead
23:25and just keep
23:25doing this
23:26and you've won
23:27five series
23:28in 28 years
23:29right
23:29that's it
23:30right
23:30even the right
23:32pick
23:32does not
23:33mean greatness
23:34was Cade Cunningham
23:35the right pick
23:37I think so
23:37yeah
23:38what the hell
23:38they got so far
23:40got a one seed
23:41yep
23:41then bowed out
