00:00I actually got this text this morning from a good friend, and I wonder, like, what's your reaction to this?
00:06It's speculative, but my friend said something, and he is not alone.
00:11He said, God, Steph must be so pissed.
00:17And I know this is where a lot of people's heads are right now, wondering, is Steph pissed?
00:24Should he be pissed?
00:26He'll never say it publicly, but you know that he is, you know, X, Y, Z.
00:31This is interesting.
00:32Vince Goodwill, who does a lot for Yahoo through the years, SiriusXM.
00:37And if you remember, Vince Goodwill was the guy back at the Olympics a couple years ago that did the
00:44interview with Steph,
00:45where Steph certainly didn't insinuate that he wanted to leave, but I'm going to paraphrase.
00:51He said something along the lines of, like, no, no, no, it's always important to be competing.
00:58I'm not going to be okay with just cruising through the remainder of my career not trying to win.
01:03That was the tone of the interview, and this happened a couple years ago.
01:07And Vince was on the Hoops Collective podcast through ESPN and said this.
01:12This whole two-timeline garbage that they were trying to pull off, like, that's where all of this sort of
01:17stems from,
01:18is we're trying to plan ahead of Stephen Curry as opposed to, hey, man, let's see if we can maximize
01:25and make the best of this.
01:27Steph has never really threatened to go anywhere, and the Warriors know that,
01:31and that's why they've been able to do the things that they've been doing.
01:34If Steph kicked it a completely different way, then we will be having different conversations.
01:39I think this is the first salvo of, hey, don't take me for granted here.
01:44Okay, so that's from Vince.
01:46Here's Shams on the Warriors, not just this offseason, but all of the big star efforts that they've made over
01:54the last half a year.
01:56Let's take a look at their last seven months and the pursuits that they've had go back to January and
02:02February.
02:02They offered four first-round picks for Giannis Antetokounmpo at the trade deadline.
02:06They missed out.
02:07And to be clear, at the NBA draft last month, the Celtics approached the Warriors on a deal that would
02:14have sent four first-round picks to Boston for Jalen Brown.
02:18The Warriors spoke to the Celtics about that, but they passed on that deal.
02:22They did not want to trade those four first-round picks.
02:25Then during free agency, we've spoken about it.
02:27LeBron James and Anthony Davis were their targets.
02:29There was significant belief around the NBA that if they had gotten AD, that would have made them a solidified
02:36spot to land LeBron James.
02:38But that asking price for Anthony Davis, once all of this was known, was going to be astronomical.
02:43You're looking at multiple first-round picks, multiple swaps.
02:45Clearly, they did not want to go that threshold.
02:48They have wanted to maintain their assets, take a calculated approach to team building,
02:53because they're at the twilight of Stephen Curry's career, so you have to look at the now and the future.
02:59Look, that's fair.
03:00Yes, you have to look at the now and in the future.
03:03And anybody who wants to criticize a team for doing that, I believe that you're wrong.
03:08Like, yes, you have to keep an eye on both.
03:10My question that I've been throwing out there today, and I don't know the way to sort of acquire the
03:16answer to this,
03:17but there's just a lot of indicators right now that would suggest that Joe Lacob is, in his heart of
03:25hearts,
03:25seems right now more interested, more activated by the future as opposed to the now.
03:36And I don't know.
03:38From my standpoint as a Warrior fan, that does not feel good.
03:41It doesn't feel great, but at the same time, I would not want them to give up four first-round
03:46picks for Anthony Davis.
03:48I would not really want them to give up four first-round picks for Jalen Brown.
03:52I mean, Jalen Brown is a great player.
03:54He's younger than Anthony Davis.
03:56He's healthier than Anthony Davis, but that's a lot of first-round capital
04:00when you're going to be in a spot very soon, a year, two, or three,
04:04when you don't have Steph Curry and the dynasty will officially be over.
04:08The dynasty is already over, but the Steph Curry portion of it, he's still here.
04:12So I'm not that interested in doing something along those lines.
04:17Like, for example, right now, I could go out and probably afford the down payment on a Ferrari,
04:23and I could make the monthly payments for a while, but that's not a very good, sensible play for me.
04:30You're not going to bloop that?
04:32You blooped me because I took a dog to the groomer today?
04:35This guy says he can do the down payment on a Ferrari, and you don't bloop him?
04:39Sorry, if there's other stuff.
04:40You're going to bloop him.
04:42So you go into your 401K, and you liquidate it, and then you take that money,
04:47and you put a down payment, and you drive a Ferrari for two months,
04:51and all the insurance and all the rest of it, and God forbid you park that thing anywhere,
04:56it might get keyed or dinged by a shopping cart, whatever.
04:59It's not a sensible move.
05:02That's the point.
05:03I'm not saying that four first-round picks for Jalen Brown is akin to me buying a Ferrari,
05:07but it's not a sensible sound play for the future.
05:11No, and I can hear that.
05:12I don't disagree with you.
05:14By the way, you're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMC-FM, and HD1 San Francisco,
05:18an Odyssey sports station, and the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries,
05:22always live on the free Odyssey app and coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
05:26Again, my point is not that the Warriors should just be flippant, should just throw picks everywhere in the name
05:36of Steph Curry.
05:37They're just, for my taste, there's too many voices right now who I think have a line to Joe Lacob
05:45that seem to be expressing that the number one motivation of the Warriors organization right now
05:51is building an awesome winner in the post-Steph era.
05:55Yes, that needs to be a part of your thinking, but I don't want that to be your only thinking.
06:01And if I were Steph, that would really, like, yes, I want to leave the organization in a good spot.
06:06Like he said, I think he's super mature about the whole thing, but that would piss me off.
06:11If Kawakami's going to sit here and say, I think Joe Lacob is very motivated by building a winner after
06:18Steph
06:18to prove to everybody that he can, and Logan Murdoch is going to say the reason collectively
06:24that the Warriors did not trade for Jalen Brown, whether that was February or two weeks ago,
06:29the reason that they didn't do that is because collectively they could not agree
06:34that Jalen was going to be the one in 2030 when Steph's no longer here.
06:40Those quotes are all coming from the same place.
06:43Those quotes tell me, if accurate, in their perspective, that Joe Lacob right now,
06:51the number one thing that's moving his needle is A, the future,
06:57but B, and here's what I really don't like about it, trying to prove something to the world.
07:02I've always felt like, because I've fallen into that trap,
07:06I just feel like that's a dangerous place to be.
07:09When you wake up in the morning and your motivation is, I got to prove myself.
07:14I got to show these people this, that, or the other.
07:18Like, I don't know if that's what's driving Joe, but if it is, I'd say to Joe,
07:22you know what, dude?
07:23I think you won.
07:24I think your life is good.
07:27Like, relax.
07:29You don't need to prove anything to anybody.
07:31You built Chase Center, for God's sakes.
07:33Right.
07:34But you know this about people who've gone from not a lot to being billionaires.
07:39I know.
07:40You always want to keep driving that because how you went from where you were,
07:45and I don't know what Joe Lacob's upbringing was like.
07:48I understand that it was pretty much humble and not, you know,
07:51from a millionaire or a billionaire, but you get to where you are,
07:55and you got there because you never give up the grind.
07:58And so you're not just going to get to a spot and say, ah, I'm going to throw up my
08:02feet.
08:02I'm going to put my hands interlocked behind my head, and now I'm chilling.
08:06For sure.
08:08But you can grind without it being about proving something to someone else.
08:13Why don't you just grind on your goals?
08:16You know what I mean?
08:17I think he is.
08:18Maybe, and again, maybe those are the same thing.
08:22But I would think if I honed the Warriors and Steph Curry was on the team,
08:27that would still maintain the one seed in my heart while we're sitting here doing this,
08:34not because I owe something to Steph, but certainly, if for no other reason,
08:40simply out of respect for everything that he's achieved and the player he still is.
08:45Like, that's all.
08:46That's all I'm saying.
08:47I'm not saying that don't worry about the future until some other day.
08:50Sure, worry about it.
08:52Don't do a bad deal.
08:53But if this is really what's driving Joe right now,
08:57the idea of showing the world that he can actually be a great owner
09:02and the Warriors can be a huge brand post-Steph,
09:07I feel like we've arrived too early, if that's the case.
09:11I agree with that part of it, but maybe they don't believe that Jalen Brown is that guy.
09:16And so if the ask is for four first-round picks at the deadline for Jalen Brown,
09:21and you give up Jimmy Butler, and you get Jalen Brown, who's got three more years in his deal,
09:26if you're not a believer that he can be the guy, and even if he is the guy,
09:30well, then you're going to have to sign him beyond the Steph Curry era
09:33and give him $65, $70, $75 million, whatever that number is.
09:38Because I'm not sure if at that moment, at the deadline last year,
09:42they were committed to, yeah, Jalen Brown, you're the guy.
09:45And then I think the thing that is jarring for a lot of Warrior fans in 888-957-9570,
09:51if you believe this or not, but you get to this offseason,
09:55and Boston's able to give up just two first-round picks,
09:58and they get two first-round picks, rather.
10:00And, Paul George, you and I have a difference of opinion as to what Paul George is worth.
10:06I think Paul George is still a viable, good, top-30 player in the NBA.
10:12Yeah, but so is Jimmy Butler when he's back, so that you're really talking about...
10:16If he's back.
10:16Yeah, but you're talking about half a year.
10:18I mean, everything's speculative.
10:20Probably more than half a year, and Jimmy's coming off an ACL,
10:22and I think he's... is he older than Paul George, or the same age?
10:25I think maybe a few months older.
10:27It's not even that important for the conversation,
10:29but if you're Boston, you probably are more interested in somebody who can play right away,
10:34and that's Paul George, and so you take the two picks,
10:37but I think a lot of fans see what Boston got back and think,
10:41like, why weren't you in on it, even if it was three first-round picks and Jimmy Butler?
10:46Could you have done that?
10:49That's a fair question.
10:50I don't know.
10:51And I don't even know if they tried.
10:52Right, right.
10:53I know that there's that narrative out there that the Warriors never countered.
10:57I don't know if that's true.
10:59I don't know if that's true, but, yeah, if they just were like,
11:04Jimmy Butler and four first-rounders, the Warriors are like,
11:07no thanks, we don't even want to talk to you.
11:08I think that's a miss.
11:10I think that's a miss.
11:11Agreed.
11:12You know what I mean?
11:12Or do you circle back last month when Jalen Brown was actually traded
11:17and see, like, has the price come down?
11:18Because it appears to me, no matter what you think about Paul George,
11:21the price came down.
11:22Jimmy and four first-rounders is a bigger ask than Paul George and two first-rounders.
11:27That's a bigger ask.
11:28Right.
11:29So the price came down.
11:31And clearly it came down because Paul George and two ones ended up being the one they took,
11:35which means nobody in the NBA beat that offer.
11:39I wonder, if you did say Jimmy and three ones, is that a better offer than Paul and two ones?
11:44I think it is.
11:46I think it is if you're team building.
11:47Well, it depends on where those ones are.
11:50And I would bet that any conversation that Mike Dunleavy had involved the number 11 pick,
11:57which turned out to be Yaksa Lendeborn.
11:58For sure.
11:58So if I'm a team, for example, Boston, and, you know, I want to hear your offer about,
12:03okay, Jimmy Butler and three firsts, well, I want this year's first because this draft,
12:07everyone says, is one of the best ever.
12:09I'm trying to remember, though.
12:11The Jalen Brown deal, that was after the draft?
12:14Was the Jalen Brown deal after the draft?
12:16I think so.
12:17I'll look it up.
12:18But.
12:19I think it was.
12:20I think it was after the draft.
12:22So the Yaksa, I mean, you could ask for Yaksa, right?
12:26But like that Philly didn't have to give up anything out of this year's draft.
12:31They gave up future draft capital.
12:34And Boston, did they want to do a deal with Philly?
12:38Look what they did.
12:40Look what Boston just did.
12:42They built a behemoth with their rival.
12:45Like, I would imagine there would be a little bit of a, hey, we'd rather do a deal with the
12:51Warriors.
12:51Let's get Jalen Brown out of the conference, out of our, you know, out of our area.
12:58Yeah, I'm seeing it.
12:58It was official July 6th.
13:01So, yeah, that was pretty far after the draft.
13:04And so, yeah, I mean, and you get a couple of picks in the future.
13:09They get the 2028 and the 2031 picks.
13:15So.
13:16That's not that great of a deal.
13:19I don't feel like that's that great of a deal for Boston.
13:22And that was what I said to Grandy that day when it broke.
13:26Like, one of my concerns is almost like, why didn't anybody in the NBA beat that deal?
13:30What does everybody know about Jalen Brown that made him seemingly less attractive than
13:36we all think he is?
13:37Especially because now he ended up being a conduit to LeBron James.
13:42Right.
13:43Yep.
13:43Like, that in and of itself ups his value.
13:46Whether he plays well or not.
13:48So, I'm still confused by that whole thing.
13:51But I wonder if we will ever find out about the Jason Tatum, Jalen Brown, Boston Celtics front office part
13:58of it.
13:59Because it just felt like they were in a spot where they needed to trade him.
14:03And the one that really still scratches my head is the Luka Doncic out of Dallas.
14:08It didn't seem like that was a broken relationship.
14:11Other than, you know, as soon as they traded him, the reports came out about, you know, the weight and
14:16maybe beer and cigarettes and all the rest of it.
14:19And even if that's true, beer, cigarettes, and he's heavy, the dude's still bald.
14:24Yeah.
14:25So, what are we talking about?
14:26Yeah.
14:27Debra in San Leandro.
14:28Hi, Debra.
14:28Thanks for calling.
14:29What's up?
14:30Hi.
14:31What's up?
14:32What's up?
14:35Oof.
14:37I'll tell you what.
14:38Let's put Debra on hold.
14:39I would like to hear what Debra has to say.
14:40That was an incredibly difficult sound to listen to.
14:43I hope I don't ever hear that again.
14:45I think either the smoke alarm is going off or her door's open.
14:49The car door.
14:50Or all of it at the same time.
14:53That's one of those sounds that someone does when they're trying to annoy you.
14:56You know what I mean?
14:57It's like bringing up pods for no reason.
14:59Last week, the smoke alarm malfunctioned at 630, and we have a toddler, so I jump out of bed, and
15:05I'm trying to turn it off, and I do.
15:07Oh, God, she didn't wake up.
15:09Five minutes later, goes off again, and this time, the toddler wakes up, and it's like, well, there goes that.
15:15There goes that.
15:16I just, like, take those things off the ceiling and take the battery out until later.
15:20That's what I do sometimes.
15:21I know that's probably not the safest way to play it, but when those things are going off and I
15:26can't figure out why, I'm just like, just get off.
15:30Just shut up for a second.
15:31No doubt.
15:32Right?
15:32We'll deal with this later.
15:33Try to do that.
15:34Sometimes you hold the button, and then it, like, goes off, and you figure that that actually solved the problem,
15:39but didn't solve the problem.
15:40Do you think it's a problem?
15:40Do you think it's a problem?
15:40Do you think it's a problem?
