00:40So, you know, obviously he speaks and things like that, but we got Joe Brady.
00:43So, from that standpoint, it didn't feel different.
00:47How about just sort of how practice was run, whether it felt different or not?
00:51Were there interesting differences in how the Bills and Brady ran things?
00:58I would say the only difference that I really noticed right on, right off the hoof,
01:03was the Bills' offense was wearing blue, their defense was wearing white.
01:08And I mean, I know it sounds a little weird to people, but, you know, that's something different.
01:12And Josh Allen said after practice, it's smart for a new head coach to do some different things.
01:17And that was one thing that was different.
01:19Another thing that's very different is starting an hour early.
01:23I mean, Joe Brady spoke to the media at 8 a.m., and they had practice at 8.30 a
01:29.m.
01:30Sean McDermott did it totally an hour later, right, which matters because it's an hour later for everything throughout the
01:37day,
01:38and even all of us planning what we have to do, fans getting here a little bit.
01:41So those little things were different, but, no, I mean, I think I've told you guys before.
01:46I mean, I've now covered, let's see, my first training camp would have been Chan Gailey out here covering,
01:52kind of in my capacity and job in some capacity, you know, covering the team.
01:56Would have been Chan Gailey, Doug Marone, Rex Ryan, Sean McDermott.
02:01This is my fifth head coach.
02:03Football practice is football practice.
02:05It's generally the same.
02:06If there's music playing, you do periods of red zone, you do periods of two-minute, you do special teams.
02:13That stuff, you don't notice a lot of difference between any coach.

03:06which was whatever color they're wearing that week, the offense wears, right?

03:13So, to me, sometimes it is just to be different, just to say, hey, it's a little bit different.
03:17You know, it's not everything.
03:18You want to feel a little bit different in some capacity knowing that you have a different guy in charge,
03:22different coaches around you.
03:23So, you know, that could be just intentional like that,
03:26or it could be something Joe Brady actually wants to do for some reason.

03:31I don't think I knew that, that the offense would wear the color of the week.

05:02And first play of training camp, at least in 11-on-11, right, goes to Coleman, he drops it.
05:08Second play, back to Coleman.
05:10Harder play.
05:10Like, the drop was just a little curl or, like, slant in, like, short, you know, pitch
05:15and catch and he dropped it.
05:17And a harder throw down the other sideline and he made the play.
05:22I thought it was – I don't know.
05:24What did you make of what Brandon Bean had to say about Coleman?
05:28Well, he's certainly continuing on the theme of always having, like, a belief in Coleman,
05:33right?
05:34That's what we've heard from him and from Joe Brady.
05:39And I do believe that they believe in Keon Coleman as a football player and as a person.
05:44Like, I believe that.
05:45But I also think there's got to be some guarded, you know, hey, we got to make sure it happens
05:50in the regular season.
05:51Brandon Bean, to me, is a lot like all of us, which is all these things are great, but
05:56we got to see it in the regular season.
05:57But I like what I'm seeing right now.
05:59It was – I noticed it right away, too.
06:01What he said is exactly what I said.
06:02In fact, it happened.
06:04And I went right over to Josh Reed.
06:06He was standing right next to me, and I said, first pass of the camp, and Keon Coleman
06:11dropped it.
06:12And then right away, as soon as we're standing there, comes right back at him, right back
06:16towards us, on the sidelines, makes a really nice catch, turns upfield.
06:20And then I looked at Josh, and I said, that's the Keon Coleman roller coaster.
06:23Here we go, right?
06:25Well, that was brought up by Brandon Bean in that particular play.
06:28But Brandon brought up that play about how he would react.
06:31How would he take, you know, dropping that pass and bouncing back from it and what that
06:36would mean.
06:36But his overall message about Keon Coleman was exactly what the talking points have
06:41been about him this offseason, which are, we believe in him.
06:44He's done everything right.
06:46And Brandon went even farther in saying, if you know him like I know him and you see the
06:49work that he's put in, you know, you have a – you should believe in him because it's
06:54been different.
06:54And it feels like, to him, he said, kind of the light's kind of gone on about the maturity
06:59issues and what he's done wrong.
07:00I mean, I think it reminds me of when Bean talked about Davis and Igbenosin and cleaning
07:05up his penalties.
07:07And Bean talked about how, look, yeah, he had a lot of penalties.
07:10He went from 12 to 4.
07:11He had 16.
07:11But it meant a lot to them that he actually cleaned him up.
07:14Like, he was so self-aware to go work on it.
07:16And today, talking about Coleman, it reminded me of him doing the same thing and saying it
07:23like Keon's very self-aware.
07:24He knows.
07:25It's not just, oh, I got to be better.
07:26It's, okay, I'm going to take ownership of what I did to get myself in those situations
07:32and not let it happen.
07:32But we don't know until it happens, guys.
07:34Igbenosin, the Bill's second of two second-round picks in this year's draft.
07:39Yeah, we've talked so much about Coleman.
07:41I felt like Bean, I don't mean this as a criticism, kind of fished his way to an answer to
07:48the question.
07:48You know, like, he literally says, I don't know what my expectations are.
07:53Which, maybe he's today trying to figure out, all right, how are we going to, like, you've
07:59said the same thing, I think, Sal.
08:01I think he's topic number one over there this summer.
08:05To me, he is.
08:06Right?
08:06I mean, questions about this player might be more questions than they get about any other
08:11player.
08:11I mean, Brady is the big change.
08:14Yeah, the storylines are Brady and Jim Leonard, but the most critical, to me, person on this
08:22roster for his own career and maybe has a say in how this season goes is Keon Coleman.
08:30We kind of know about the other guys, Josh Allen and James Cook and Khalil Shakir, DJ Moore.
08:36Yeah, sure, there's a question about DJ Moore, but he's put time in this league.
08:40Like, this could go one of two ways, and this is not your number one rookie.
08:44Oh, he's a rookie.
08:45It's not your number two.
08:46Okay, he made some mistakes.
08:47This is his third year.
08:48After this year, they don't have fifth-year option because he's a second-round pick.
08:52They're going to have to make a decision on his career, and he's going to be the person
08:57that's going to drive that decision based on his attitude, his timeliness, his professionalism,
09:02and his performance.
09:03It's really interesting.
09:04Like, on Bean talking about not having, not knowing what sort of expectations to put
09:11on him, what kind of expectations do you put on a backup?
09:15Like, he's not in a starting spot right now, right?
09:19I mean, Palmer's healthy for now, and if that stays, and he is who they wanted him to be last
09:25year, he's not getting that spot.
09:28He sure as hell's not getting DJ Moore's spot, you know, barring injury.
09:32And, you know, they've never really been seemingly that interested in using him as a big slot
09:37in Shakir's spot.
09:39And now there's Skylar Bell back there, too.
09:42Like, it's crowded.
09:43It should be.
09:44They shouldn't be counting on him.
09:46But he's got an uphill fight, not just, I don't want to say necessarily to make the
09:50team, but to, you know, get here and get a uniform on Sundays.
09:56Yeah, it's a great point, because if he is considered the number three, like, good question

10:02Like, what is a good number for a number three receiver in any capacity, in any team?
10:08On this year, it's, on this team, based on recent history, it'd be 40 catches.
10:13I mean, what does that get you, right?

10:16See, that's why I would say, I think there's three ways it can go.
10:19And the third likeliest would be that he actually hits.
10:23I mean, I think the stuff that's held him back by how the Bills talk is off the field,
10:30sort of a self-discipline kind of thing.
10:32I never thought from people that I take my cues from that the upside was really there
10:37in the first place.
10:37He's going to get open and make big plays.
10:39Especially if he plays outside.
10:41So, I don't know.
10:42Like, if...
10:43These are the right questions, I think.

10:50I mean, you don't hope for, per se, Josh Palmer to be non-existent.
10:56But is Coleman, at his best, good enough to just bump him out of the way?
11:01And on this offense, with James Cook and the D.J. Moore move,
11:04is there really that much upside for him in terms of numbers?
11:07I don't think so.
11:08He's had as many touchdown catches the last two years as any other Bill.

11:13So, he's had that.
11:14There's that, yeah.
11:15I think he's an interesting sort of specialist if he's, you know, there for them this year.
11:21But I don't know how much farther it goes.
11:22I mean, he had the third most catches last year.
11:25I just looked it up.

11:29I mean, that's not a lot, right?

11:30And then you look at the year before that, he had...
11:32He was down the list a little bit, but the third most was 32 the year before that.

11:38How it could work out for whoever that guy is, whether it's Coleman or not, is there's
11:43nobody really that far ahead of him.
11:46You know, this isn't Dallas with Lamb and Pickens or Cincinnati.

11:49Like, really, you could end up catching 70 passes and leading the team.
11:54That's kind of what's happened the last two years.
11:57So, it's not like there isn't room for more catches from somebody.

12:05If he is the third leading receiver and catches 40 passes, it doesn't have to look all the
12:10same in that regard.
12:12It could be created a little bit differently, right?
12:13Which is, yeah, he's a third receiver because, you know, they went to him on some jump balls
12:18and he scored a few touchdowns.
12:21Or it could be like he's just consistently catching, I don't know what, five balls a game, right?
12:26I don't know, whatever that is.
12:28You know, and what's my math on that?

12:33It could be 85.

12:41But, you know, I mean, maybe it's just, hey, when he's available and the other two options
12:45are just too good and they're having good years, but here he is.
12:48Every time we, you know, kind of go to him, he makes a play, that could happen, and then
12:52you feel better about it, I guess.
12:53And there's a downfield element to it.
12:55I mean, not all catches are the same.
12:57So, with a player like Coleman, and even Palmer, this is what Palmer's calling card was when
13:02the Bills signed him, was, well, these are meaningful plays.
13:05Right, yeah.
13:06If Coleman catches 40 balls, but it's 18 yards, okay.
13:11Like, that's a big play guy, and like, that's something an offense can really use, even if
13:16a guy is fourth on the depth chart and not on the field all the time.
13:20But in certain roles, like, you're going to spring him, you might anticipate coverage,
13:25let's get him out there, and maybe you hit on some of that.
13:28So, that's all stuff that could work out for him, I guess.
13:32I have a question about a different receiver.
13:35So, Tyrell Shavers starts on the physically unable to perform list.
13:41Is there room for him once healthy?
13:44Like, is Shavers somebody, I know, like, last year, we brought his name up, or you brought
13:49his name up a few times, and he made a couple plays, but it was still just that.
13:53Is he somebody with a, you know...
13:56But they carried him all year on the run.
13:57Like, he was active.
13:59Like, he didn't make a lot of plays, but he played every game, I think, special teams.

14:05He was important to them.

14:06He was a special teams player.
14:08He's a willing and decent blocker.
14:10Not the biggest guy, but he's kind of tall.
14:13You know, he's just technically sound.
14:14He does a lot of things right.
14:15They really like what he brings.
14:17Yes, Mike, the answer to your question is yes, and I would say it this way.
14:22If Tyrell Shavers is healthy, when he's healthy, I think he's the six...
14:28They keep six wide receivers.
14:29Like, I think they keep six.
14:30And it's because he provides enough of a special teams boost that that counts right there.
14:38But he's not a punt returner.
14:39If they keep six wide receivers, you might see one of the other receivers, like Khalil Shakira, Keon Coleman, returning
14:46punts.
14:47If he's not healthy, then a couple things could happen here.
14:52They might keep five, and then they'll find a punt returner around the roster.
14:55That could still be one of the receivers, or it could be McCall Hardman as a receiver,
14:59or it could be somebody else around the roster.
15:01Or they'll kind of mix and match it the best way they go with elevations and things like that.
15:06But yes, I believe Tyrell Shavers has a spot.
15:09Now, the other part of this is they did sign Trent Shurfield, and I think they signed Trent Shurfield to
15:14be the quasi-Tyrell Shavers replacement.
15:17It doesn't have to be one-for-one all the time.
15:18He doesn't have to make the team.
15:20But he actually is a very similar type of player.
15:23Yeah, Bean said today that they don't – he does not anticipate Shavers being ready for the year.
15:28Like, he's on PUP now, and he thinks he'll be on PUP into the season.
15:33So he's going to have an uphill climb.
15:35You know, but I think if he proves to be healthy, you know, I guess it really depends on how
15:41they feel about Shurfield.
15:43Like, if he just settles into that role and makes the team in that role, do they feel like they
15:49need to replace Shurfield with Shavers eventually?
15:52Because that's really the spot, right?
15:54Yeah, that's right.
15:56So we'll see.
15:57I think it was very intentional to sign Trent Shurfield due to what happened with Tyrell Shavers.
16:02By the way, I did speak with Tyrell for a little while today, and he's feeling good about, you know,
16:06coming back and playing this year.
16:08But, again, it doesn't look like that's necessarily right on the horizon, but, you know, I think he feels like
16:12he'll play this year.

16:43Well, that catch you saw that I believe the Bills tweeted out was a really nice play.
16:49But I saw another one that was even better from DJ Moore.
16:52And he – DJ Moore, I say this to you guys all the time.
16:55He's just a really good football player.
16:57He does everything really well.
16:58He's not the fastest guy.
16:59He's not the biggest guy.
17:00But, man, he runs routes great.
17:01He catches the ball great.
17:02He knows how to get open.
17:04He can win vertically.
17:05He can win horizontally because of all these things.
17:07He reminds me a lot of Stefan Diggs, to be quite honest with you, when he plays.
17:10And he had a ball and a catch.
17:12Josh threw it to him kind of on a mid-range route towards the left sideline on an out pattern.
17:18And it was kind of between a couple defenders.
17:20And DJ Moore went down to get it.
17:21He went down to the ground.
17:22And because it was wet, he caught it and then slid.
17:24It was very similar to the play a little bit that you saw on Twitter.
17:27But it was a little different.
17:29That was a really nice play that he made.
17:32And then later on, Josh went deep down the field to Khalil Shakir coming right at me.
17:36I was on the side of the end zone on the left there when he walked on the field.
17:40And Khalil made a really nice catch.
17:42But it was a great throw in the rain by Josh.
17:44That was really cool to see.
17:45So a couple offensive plays highlighted the day.
17:48But maybe the best thing I saw today was Michael Hoyt being on the field.
17:51I think that is super cool.
17:52It's great for him.
17:53He was not on the pup list.
17:54Neither was Dorian Williams.
17:55But Michael Hoyt being on the field as part of this team right now is super impressive
