00:00What is your estimation of what went down, no pun intended, with the Bills last night, the three trades?
00:06I know you tweeted recently about the possibility that a player or two, they would have picked, were not there.
00:13I did, but I think what I tweeted was, I think it's easy to assume that.
00:17I think there's too much assumption on that today, Mike.
00:19I think there's too many people thinking, well, they must have just really liked Fiedemann or Concepcion, and they weren't
00:24there.
00:25I think this is more about the Texans.
00:27Look what the Texans gave up.
00:29From what I understand, they really wanted Rutledge to pair with him.
00:32Remember, they signed Wyatt Teller.
00:33They have had a lot of issues in offensive line.
00:35The Texans really wanted Rutledge, and they also knew, apparently, or thought that a couple of teams were sniffing around
00:42him,
00:43and they liked this kid a lot, so they paid a premium to go up and get him.
00:47Now, could it also be true that the Bills thought maybe they'd get Concepcion?
00:51I guess there was a report out there that maybe they even basically offered a trade-up for him.
00:56I guess so.
00:57I mean, sure.
00:58I don't dismiss that.
01:00I just think this is more about the Texans because, as you guys know, I have said for a while,
01:05I think the Bills are looking to trade down anyway.
01:07So, unless they were super in love with one of those guys, and they went and they go, oh, my
01:10God, let's just do something.
01:12I think this was, hey, we're willing to move down.
01:15And then when the Texans get there and they go, and the Bills get to 26, and the Texans are
01:18like, hey, dude, we really want this kid.
01:20All right, well, what are you willing to pay?
01:22Because we've got a couple other teams sniffing around, too.
01:25Yeah.
01:26Well, I'm totally fine with all that because as much as I might have liked to see them pick Casey
01:32Concepcion,
01:33giving up anything in this year's draft to move up a couple of spots I think would have really freaked
01:38me out.
01:38Like, if he just falls to you there and you're like, all right, well, we love this guy and it
01:44might not be our biggest need, but like, okay, let's do it.
01:46Like, I can get with that.
01:48If you needed to do what they did to get Kincaid, in this draft, I think I would much rather
01:54they choose the path they chose,
01:56which was move down and try to get more in between, you know, the beginning of round two and the
02:03end of, you know, round three.
02:05Which, you know, they at least accomplished to some degree.
02:08They've got two picks there now, which, oh, well, right, it's only the two.
02:12That's what they had.
02:14But they got all that other stuff, the fourths and the fifths.
02:17They were out of round two until last night.
02:19Now they're into round two, but they're out of round one.
02:20Right.
02:21Right, but the difference is they moved up an incredible number in the third round.
02:27They were at the back end, now they're at the front end.
02:28That's right.
02:29They have the third pick tonight in the second round, the second pick in the third round, and the first
02:34pick of the fourth round,
02:35which kicks off our Saturday.
02:36I mean, like, they're at the top of each of these rounds.
02:38The other reason why, if you do, let's say they did call Cleveland about KC Concepcion,
02:44it doesn't have to be about him.
02:46They're calling him about the pick, right?
02:47They're not telling him who they're taking.
02:49So you could also just be peeking in to see what the going rate is for 24 right now, right?
02:53Like, hmm, where are they about trading 26?
02:55What are they looking for for 24?
02:57And you kind of use that as intel to kind of make your deal at 26.
03:01Yeah, what's the economy like out there?
03:05Exactly.
03:06Right.
03:06Well, as we've said a lot today, they sit with the third pick of the second round,
03:11and there are several players that we spent serious time on and paid serious attention to in the last month
03:18or two.
03:19If they picked these players, any of them at pick 26, it would have, you know, at least been okay.
03:25It would have seemed like good value.
03:27So they'll do a little bit better value-wise if they pick from this list.
03:31Cassius Howell, Sal, Caden McDonald, a couple players that we've spent a lot of time on,
03:37still available here going into Friday night.
03:40Well, Caden McDonald's the player that I mocked them yesterday, so I'm going to keep with that.
03:44I think that he is a fit at 26, at 28, at 31, or at 35.
03:49You know, I mean, like, what's the difference to me?
03:52You're getting the same guy.
03:53He's even better fit at 35 than he was at 26.
03:55That's exactly right.
03:56That's exactly right.
03:57So you're getting a great value on a player like that.
04:01If they go and get that guy who I had at 26, okay, let's roll.
04:04I mean, I think that's a really good job by Brandon Bean.
04:06And then, sure, there are definitely other players.
04:10So I think Caden McDonald is very much, to me, in the mix here.
04:13I think another guy at that position, Kristen Miller from Georgia, is very much in the mix here.
04:19Cassius Howell, you mentioned.
04:20Zion Young, I think, could be a guy that they could like a lot.
04:23And then at linebacker, I think that's percolating.
04:25Now we get here, I'm a little bit more on the, yeah, hey, you know what?
04:29Yeah, that's the guy.
04:30That's the guy.
04:31Last night in the media room, that was the guy that a lot of people were kind of focusing on
04:34and really liked.
04:35Do you know what he said at the combine?
04:36I think Josh Reatt even asked him at the combine, who do you model your game after?
04:39He said, Matt Milano, the Buffalo Bills.
04:42Really interesting, right?
04:43So you don't have Milano anymore.
04:45And, like, could you go safety, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren?
04:48Sure.
04:48I mean, I think a lot of possibilities are here and opened up because of where you are value-wise.
04:52But, man, some of those guys we talked about are still there.
04:55Even Denzel Boston, obviously, the wide receiver.
04:57That safety is, he's not a direct comp, but people are making the comp to Emin Worry from last year.
05:04And I loved Emin Worry so much.
05:05This guy's not the, he's big, he's long, but he's lighter.
05:09He's like 6'4", 200, I think, is what I read.
05:12I don't know if that changed, maybe, I'm looking at an old list thing.
05:14So if I'm off on the weight, correct me, please, if you know different.
05:20But athletically, it's an intriguing idea for this new defense, I think.
05:25And listen, if they wanted to go safety, even last night when Thiemann was there,
05:29when we were talking about it in the media room, and I've been off of safety for the simple fact
05:33that they signed C.J. Garter-Johnson with a $6 million deal, they have Cole Bishop.
05:37But you could certainly talk me into, look, they can use three guys on the field at once
05:42with this new defense and hybrids and guys that can, as Jim Leonard said,
05:45he works with guys who don't fit in the box really well, and he likes those guys.
05:48So, okay, if you can use that guy and then, you know, see what happens with C.J. Garter-Johnson.
05:53And after one year, if you have to, you know, wave him goodbye because, hey,
05:57we got you for one year, what most teams do, and he moves on,
06:00then you have a nice safety tandem and pairing for the next several years
06:04with McNeil Warren in this case and Cole Bishop.
06:07Sure, I could definitely see something like that.
06:09Do you have any inkling on what happens in front of the Bills tonight
06:12with San Francisco and Arizona?
06:14Last year, no, two years ago with Keon Coleman, we were just totally locked in
06:18on the speculation because the Bills were first up in that second round.
06:23Have you considered the Niners and Cardinals?
06:26I think from what we're hearing that Denzel Boston is going to go to one of these teams maybe.
06:32I guess the Niners would be most likely maybe here.
06:36I think Matt Miller tweeted something about that, like he won't be on the board
06:40by the time it gets to the Bills because he was kind of confused why some Bills fans
06:44didn't want him or a lot of Bills fans were telling me they didn't want him.
06:46He's like, well, it won't matter.
06:47He's going to be gone.
06:47So I think he has got some intel about that.
06:49So I'm guessing he's going to be gone.
06:50And then I'm not sure.
06:51The Jeremiah Love pick was interesting.
06:54Look, to me it was always Bailey, Reese, and Love.
06:57Those three were going after Mendoza.
06:59We just didn't know which order.
07:01And we got it, right?
07:02So there you go.
07:04There's Jeremiah Love going to the Arizona Cardinals.
07:08I think did Reese go fourth, if I remember right?
07:10No, Tate went fourth.
07:11Tate went fourth.
07:12I'm sorry.
07:13So Bailey and Love.
07:14So two out of the three.
07:15I'm sorry, but you're right.
07:16So there you go.
07:17Love to the Cardinals is interesting.
07:18He's a really, really good player.
07:21Would they go wide receiver with Boston?
07:23I'm not sure.
07:23So maybe they go defense.
07:25Maybe they go O-line here before the Bills pick.
07:28What did you think of Ty Simpson?
07:31I think it's super interesting.
07:33I don't love it, what they did.
07:34I say from the standpoint of I'm kind of confused.
07:38He doesn't seem like he's considered by most to be that high level of a prospect to go 13th overall.
07:44All it takes is one team.
07:45I know the Rams have pretty much operated as a pretty smart organization over the last several years.
07:51And, you know, you can give them the benefit of the doubt, but they are a team that also should
07:55be looking maybe to win one last time before sending Matt Stafford off into the sunset and add around their
08:03team.
08:03They have a good roster.
08:04But the point was made today, and I heard, you know, it's a good one.
08:07Matt Stafford still had a great year last year, one league MVP with the roster he had.
08:11But they're looking out for, let's make this transition as smooth as possible.
08:15I still, I didn't, I was confused.
08:17The other part of why I was confused, though, Mike, was it seemed like at the press conference when I
08:23watched it today, when McVay and Snead were up there, it didn't seem like they were typically their joyous selves
08:31with each other.
08:32You know what I mean?
08:33Yeah, who knows?
08:36Remember when the Patriots made that pick, was it Cole Strange the one year the Rams were having their news
08:41conference, they both just started laughing almost.
08:45But, you know, like Ross Tucker said, McVay would want to be careful not to seem too excited about, you
08:52know, drafting a quarterback.
08:53The first chance he gets after, you know, his quarterback has won the MVP.
08:58I guess, who knows about the player?
09:00Most people like you say it's early for him, but I feel like the Rams can defend the move.
09:10I mean, Stafford is old.
09:12Last year, in the summer, we were wondering if he was even going to play, and so he's near the
09:17end.
09:17I think it's defensible.
09:18And the Rams, they've won a lot, and they have done some interesting things with their picks.
09:24They've also drafted great, gotten great results later.
09:27Their defense, they just put right back together with a lot of, you know, winning draft picks.
09:32Do you know the other part about this is really, I didn't know this until last night.
09:37I didn't realize Ty Simpson's dad is the head coach at UT Martin, and his dad and Les Snead are
09:45very good friends.
09:46Yeah.
09:46That was adding fuel to the speculation that it was not McVay's favorite idea.
09:52The GM did it, but we will see, or we won't.
09:56I don't know.
09:57I don't know which it will be.
09:59Time will continue.
10:00That we know.
10:01Yes, let's hope.
10:02Sal, what's the scene there, and how will you be contributing tonight?
10:08Well, last night we had great food from Mulberry delivered.
10:11Tonight, they just showed up with some bar bills, so there we go.
10:13We're going to have that in the media room tonight.
10:15As opposed to last night, we had the Sabres game on, and the bills, you know, it was really nice
10:21by them.
10:21They put it on the big board, like at the press conference table there, that digital board.
10:25They put it on the big screen, had the draft on one TV.
10:28I had the iPad going with the Yankees game, so we were able to watch everything, and then, you know,
10:32everything was happening with the trades.
10:33So that was cool.
10:34That's not going to be tonight the case.
10:36The draft starts at 7 o'clock, and, you know, I expect the bills will draft at 35, but I
10:41wouldn't be stunned if they moved down.
10:42What I do think, though, is they could definitely take one of those fourth-round picks, especially the very early
10:48one, the first one tomorrow,
10:49and try to move back into tonight and maybe have three picks overall.
10:52And they won't be putting Canadians' lightning on the big board, you think, probably, with the sound up?
10:58I don't think they'll put it on the big board, but I bet you will have that on the TV
11:01or one of the NBA playoff games.
11:03Right.
11:04Very good.
11:05Sal, thanks for your time today.
11:06Enjoy the night and the weekend.
11:08All right, guys.
11:09Thanks a lot.
