00:28more like kind of the fabric of the bills here yes sean mcdermott's been the head coach but joe
00:32brady's been here these guys know him the offense knows him they've been a great offense that's a
00:37big story there's no doubt and maybe i'm not rising enough to think about that as much as i am

00:43defense because i just believe that sean mcdermott would be here if they didn't really want a new
00:48defense like that's the reason that's the biggest reason it wasn't because he was necessarily a
00:52quote-unquote bad head coach it was we need a new defense you can't do that without changing out
00:56sean mcdermott oh by the way going back kind of to what it was right before him this is a

01:01influence coach in in jim leonard that's who he played under that's who he you know uh modeled you
01:08know a lot of what he did under when he got to wisconsin and you know became a defensive
01:12coordinator i'm really interested in that and yes i mean mike you i think you hit a lot of the
01:16right points about how much the fan base and i'm one of these it might not realize like the difference
01:21between you know what's going to happen here with joe brady and sean mcdermott however you phrase that
01:26with tyler when he was on earlier but i'm i'm one of these people who you know it it just
01:31hasn't
01:32hit me quite yet that joe's the head coach because i'm familiar with joe i have a relationship with
01:37joe and he's still here but the defense will be totally different yeah yeah we just we just had a
01:43call that somebody's saying it was basically it's one of these people that's going to tell you like
01:47i'm not hearing anybody talk about this and like i i don't know i didn't say this to the caller
01:52because i didn't want to bog us down we were up against the clock like i feel like when we
01:55talk
01:55about the bills i'm talking about the defense all the time like the offense i don't want to take for
01:59granted the offense but it's hard not to um really the big question on the offense is does dj
02:07more elevate their passing game but their offense has been excellent and they've got everyone back
02:13with the addition of dj more and then a new left guard which i'm not going to lose a lot

02:17over i feel like you know they're going to get what they need out of alec anderson or austin corbett

02:48deep does it go how much do the best guys play is it similar to what was under mcdermott i

02:53could look go look at denver although it wasn't leonard's show there entirely um to maybe get some
02:59clues but you know do does that oliver play more in jim leonard's scheme does deon walker play more
03:06than he did last year like i'm curious about all that i am too and all these are unknowns and

03:13are questions that we really won't know until we get to the regular season in the meantime here over
03:19the next few weeks we can at least start to see kind of what it looks like the formulation of

03:23putting it together a little bit and i'm super interested in that and going okay like it just
03:27looks like a different defense now i will caution everybody this goes back a while to make sure
03:33everybody understands this is not your ted washington 3-4 defense okay this is not you're putting this
03:38really big guy at the nose guard position two guys outside of him and four people behind him that
03:43is not what jim leonard runs he actually does run a lot of even fronts meaning four guys who uh
03:48have
03:48you know who are down in the ground hand in the ground but it's a 3-4 in concept of
03:53where guys are
03:53rushing from what your defensive ends are doing you're not having two traditional defensive ends
03:57are generally standing up one might be putting his hand in the ground or getting closer to the line
04:02of scrimmage so when you go to camp when you watch a preseason game maybe it doesn't hit you like
04:07oh yeah that's way different but it absolutely is and i think the biggest difference is going to be
04:14how they are going to approach a down-to-down basis where pressure is going to come from how much
04:19pressure they're going to use what coverages they're going to play in the back end sean mcdermott to me is
04:24an excellent excellent defensive coach i think his numbers speak for themselves i know they've had
04:28problems in the postseason but one of the reasons they've had problems in the postseason is because
04:32his defense is i guess stagnant would be a because it's about doing your job being coachable keeping
04:41everything in front of you being sound and that's great and that but that i think we've seen now
04:46kind of has a ceiling and what this team is trying to do is not have that ceiling to try
04:50to break
04:50through that ceiling and get those big plays but with those big plays are going to come things that
04:54we haven't seen before could also wind up giving up big plays they also had terrible luck injury wise
05:00in postseasons with their defense um there's every year they were losing someone that mad bernard
05:06benford um just yeah benford in kansas city right just tough just tough bernard against kansas city
05:14here by the way i love anytime i love a ted washington drop yeah well with that in mind like

05:21vita ve is in the news today um right demanding a trade uh certainly you know it's a appealing enough
05:28idea it's a great player in a position that you know a lot of people see the bills as being
05:33in need
05:34of but with that said i mean deon walker not being ted washington he's a big heavy guy i think
05:41he did
05:41drop some weight coming into this year but the fact that he's not that that take on two guys space
05:48eater
05:48that a guy like washington was maybe what you're saying is that they don't need that necessarily
05:55this is not that kind of three four that's right that that's not really what they're going to be
05:59counting on where there be times where maybe a deon walker is going to be asked to do that sure
06:04but
06:04that's that's not what the the basis of this defense is the basis of this defense is we're putting four
06:10guys on our second level and you have no idea which one is coming at you from which spot they're
06:15going
06:15to be athletic enough to move around they can stay where they are stop the run but we're going to
06:21move
06:21guys around and then those guys up front we can kind of play games with them we don't have to
06:25tie
06:25them up necessarily tie up the offensive line and be a two gap guy two gap meaning right to your
06:30right
06:30and to your left you have two holes there and you have to kind of monitor both of them they're
06:34still
06:35going to ask that alvar to penetrate in this defense they're going to ask deon walker to penetrate
06:39in this defense but that's where the difference is it's going to be the aggressiveness of
06:42where these guys are coming from where the blitz package is going to come from disguising coverages
06:47and yeah the bills would do that before but when you have a three four it's a little bit you
06:51know
06:51i guess easier to do something like that because you just have so many guys that can walk around
06:56and do different things as far as via uh vita via i'm saying again via via is concerned tim graham

07:07they're having fun with it well i just it's almost like i don't want to waste time talking about it

08:23of having a little bit of a tennis match in my brain about what the bills defense in 2025 really

08:29like i mean people i think overstated how vulnerable they were against the run at least to my years and
08:37that's usually only something that happened when i was sitting right here listening to fans
08:40and maybe they would really overstate that i know we talked about it a lot like you know
08:45look at some of the metrics it's not that bad look at their ranking but if i think about it
08:49as i did
08:50earlier today another way there were a pile of games when they got gashed and that that isn't stats
08:57i mean that was baltimore and that was bijon and that was sean tucker out of syracuse and that was
09:02a few other guys over the course of the year so i don't know like did we not to ask

09:10how much help how much better do they need to be defensively than what they've been what they were
09:15last year i think you agree with this mike and chris both that you know passing and if you're good
09:23against the pass or bad against the run that's at least you still haven't given a chance to win
09:26you're holding teams back but that being said you can't be as bad against the run as the bills were
09:31consistently and you know expect to you know shut teams down the way that they want to so they have
09:37to be better against the run but i'm going to say this guys going back to the point i made
09:41earlier
09:41about the new defense one of the big issues with the defense last year it's not just against the
09:47run is they were getting beat a lot to the edge a lot remember the sean tucker run for a
09:51touchdown
09:52you just mentioned right dijon around the edge i mean joey bosa just kind of had no interest in
09:57playing the run he just you know that's fine i mean he was there to get the quarterback i get

10:01but every time there was a big run around the edge it seemed like joey bosa was involved in some
10:06sort of
10:07he let him get around the outside and that was a common theme around the defense last year no matter
10:13who was in there it seemed like uh the run that henderson had against the patriots i think that
10:18was a champ and that's who got sucked in right i think that's who it was there but it just
10:22seemed to
10:22happen too often so by the nature of the new scheme i think they should be better there the
10:27what the bills did this offseason was yes they wanted they want you know to get be better against
10:33getting to the passer getting sacks there's no doubt about it but they really concentrated on
10:37getting a guy in bradley chubb who's an excellent three down guy bradley chubb is really good at
10:41stopping the run he's very good at that and so is greg rousseau by the way and especially when you
10:46put
10:46them off the off the ball off the line of scrimmage and they're outside and going okay you want to
10:51come
10:51my way i can set the edge i have more room to do that here i'm not just flying off
10:54the edge
10:55to go get the quarterback and then they go get tj parker who by the way what did bradham mean

11:00about him he compared him to bradley chubb i mean this was a concentrated effort i think part of it

11:05we were so bad on the edges last year it wasn't the middle of the defense sure that happened once
11:09in a
11:10while it's let's make sure that we're keeping everything in the middle and letting our linebackers do work
11:15and i think they feel better about that situation i mean it's all those examples and it's even week
11:20one in the ravens game where what close your eyes what is derrick henry doing just like running right
11:26through them off tackle like in the game in baltimore he busted through busted along the game
11:32they won yeah uh the year before so a lot a lot of help needed there yeah you know um
11:38tj parker is
11:40someone who mostly this is because you have and i think a lot of people have followed your lead
11:46sort of targeted right after the just started right after the draft like saturday and even friday like
11:53the the third and fourth and fifth round picks were more interesting than maybe the second round pick
11:58but that said tj parker is their first pick and it's at a position where they're still looking for
12:04you know the next guy that's going to be an impact player a difference making type of player
12:09and the thing that's interesting about him i think to maybe remember is that he and i i watched a
12:16podcast today with sam monson and steve palazzolo and one of them i think steve made this point like
12:22parker was getting top half of the first round type buzz after the 24 season but last year was a
12:29was a
12:30tough year at clemson he didn't make phil all this out but he said that's a player that you know
12:34a
12:34year before his draft year was a high first round projection and the entire clemson defense kind of
12:41fell off a cliff and the production went away and so parker fell down draft boards i wonder
12:47if maybe there's a sneaky difference making player there in the form of tj parker yeah i think they
12:55they really liked his um his film from two years ago and there was a defensive scheme change at clemson
13:00last year which was part of the reason i think the bills felt and he felt you know that maybe
13:05the
13:05production quite wasn't quite there um i remember what ed oliver said about him during minicamp
13:11and oliver said he was watching film of a practice and he saw a defender running with one of the
13:20running backs he's like oh man like who's this guy in our team like he's running with the running back
13:24and then somebody said that's tj parker he's like wow this guy's he's fast he's athletic he can do
13:29that and yeah i think that maybe that that speed that athleticism that explosiveness that really
13:36wasn't the thing we talked about when he got drafted might be better than we anticipate and
13:41this could be a guy that they could really rely on i think the question with parker is going back
13:46to
13:46what you said about how i kind of started this after the draft thing it's an upside down draft and
13:52the
13:52guys later might contribute early might contribute i just don't know where the opportunity is right
13:56away bradley chubbs a three down guy greg rousseau is a three down guy yeah you can rotate them it's
14:01a long season no problem with that but like there's no starting spot for him to take right now right
14:06there it's not like caleb alarm's or who's going to have that door wide open it's not like uh somebody
14:13who comes at safety and you know cj garner johnson gets signed and i guess bad example there but you

14:18get the point jalen kilgore he'll probably they'll probably find a spot for jalen kilgore to be on
14:22the field in specialty situations to be your nickel corner your big nickel when when does tj
14:27parker play like what are those situations all right sal well enjoy uh the scenery on the 390
