00:00:50I just want to confess, I do always enjoy meeting here.

00:01:02Not just for the humour, but just the sweet spirit amongst us

00:01:05and we know that that's only of God, isn't it?

00:01:07We're sinful beings, we are contentious at the core

00:01:10but praise be to God, we can gather around his word

00:01:14and I think that's important.

00:01:16I first started maybe coming here a couple of years ago

00:01:19the first time I came roughly, maybe just over two years ago

00:01:22and the fellowship's still going, the chapel's still meeting

00:01:26it's a wonderful thing, isn't it?

00:01:28And not that this building's still here

00:01:30but we still continue to meet.

00:01:33No matter the obstacles, no matter what

00:01:35God's able to do great things and we thank him for it.

00:01:38I'll just open up the scriptures.

00:01:39You want to turn to the book of Psalms with me?

00:01:41Psalm 72, wonderful scripture here that I'll start us off with

00:01:46and it reads

00:01:48Give the king thy judgments, O God

00:01:51and thy righteousness unto the king's son

00:01:55He shall judge thy people with righteousness

00:01:58and thy poor with judgment

00:02:00The mountains shall bring peace to the people

00:02:04and the little hills by righteousness

00:02:06He shall judge the poor of the people

00:02:10He shall save the children of the needy

00:02:12and shall break in pieces the oppressor

00:02:14They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure

00:02:19throughout all generations

00:02:20He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass

00:02:24as showers that water the earth

00:02:25In his days shall the righteous flourish

00:02:29and the abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth

00:02:33He shall have dominion also from sea to sea

00:02:36and from the river unto the ends of the earth

00:02:39They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him

00:04:12I've chosen Job chapter 9

00:04:15We're going to be reading from chapter 4 through 24

00:04:21We won't read all of it together

00:04:23Just for the sake of time

00:04:26And we won't expound every piece of it tonight

00:04:29Just for the sake of time

00:04:31But one of the chapters

00:04:33There's always profit in reading

00:04:35I always like to read an entire chapter

00:04:40Not only because it's separated for us already

00:04:42But it's just because

00:04:44We're told to give attendance to reading

00:04:47And the importance of God's word

00:04:50In our own lives as individuals

00:04:52But collectively and corporately

00:04:55I think that the scriptures should always be read

00:04:57Like this is central to us

00:04:59God's words, not a man's words or opinion at all

00:05:03So let's read Job chapter 9 together

00:05:05Then Job answered and said

00:05:09I know it is so of a truth

00:05:13But how should man be just with God

00:05:17If he will contend with him

00:05:20He cannot answer him one of a thousand

00:05:23He is wise in heart

00:05:25And mighty in strength

00:05:28Who hath hardened himself against him

00:05:30And hath prospered

00:05:32Which removeth the mountains

00:05:34And they know not

00:05:35Which overturneth them in his anger

00:05:38Which shaketh the earth out of her place

00:05:41And the pillars thereof tremble

00:05:42Which commandeth the sun

00:05:45And it riseth not

00:05:46And sealeth up the stars

00:05:48Which alone spreadeth out the heavens

00:05:51And treadeth upon the waves of the sea

00:05:53Which maketh Arcturus

00:05:56And Orion

00:05:57And Pleiades

00:05:58And the chambers of the south

00:06:00Which doeth great things past finding out

00:06:03Yea, and wonders without number

00:08:56Just to unpack that

00:08:57Chapter alone tonight

00:08:58But there will be a lot

00:09:00In this

00:09:00Just in this portion

00:09:02I've been greatly

00:09:03Greatly

00:09:04I don't know

00:09:05I underestimate this

00:09:06But I've been greatly challenged

00:09:07Just trying to read

00:09:08Through this

00:09:09And study it

00:09:11Myself

00:09:11And I've learnt

00:09:13A few things

00:09:13From Job

00:09:14And Job's friends

00:09:14Some new things

00:09:15Or maybe

00:09:16You know

00:09:17Maybe some truths

00:09:18That I perhaps

00:09:19Already knew

00:09:19And they were reiterated

00:09:20To me in a stronger way

00:09:21So I'm hoping

00:09:23With God's help

00:09:23We'll be able to

00:09:25Unpackage some of this

00:09:26And have some understanding

00:09:28And clarity

00:09:29Going through

00:09:30Because it's not just

00:09:31A chapter

00:09:32It's not just a portion

00:09:33It's not just a

00:09:34Particular subject

00:09:35But it's a large

00:09:37Piece of text

00:09:38And it's a back and forth

00:09:40Discussion

00:09:42That we could open it up

00:09:44In so many different ways

00:09:45I think

00:09:47Just even human character

00:09:49You know

00:09:50We find truths

00:09:50Of human character

00:09:51In this

00:09:52And I mean

00:09:53Even Job's friends

00:09:54They start off

00:09:56There's three of his friends

00:09:57That we're going to look at

00:09:58Because the fourth one

00:09:59Isn't mentioned

00:10:00Until later on

00:10:00In the book

00:10:01But we're kind of

00:10:02Covering nearly half

00:10:03Of this book

00:10:03To be fair

00:10:04But Job's friends

00:10:06Even start off softly

00:10:07Because they recognise

00:10:08That their friend Job

00:10:10Is in such grief

00:10:11And agony

00:10:12And despair

00:10:13And they know

00:10:14That their words

00:10:15Aren't going to be

00:10:15Much comfort to him

00:10:16But what they're trying

00:10:17To do is just

00:10:18Express what they think

00:10:20Is true to him

00:10:21And they start off

00:10:22Quite lightly

00:10:23They start off

00:10:24You know

00:10:25Subtly

00:10:26You know

00:10:26Even with compliment

00:10:27They compliment Job

00:10:28And they acknowledge Job

00:10:29For who he is

00:10:30And things that he's done

00:10:31If you want to open up

00:10:32Just to chapter four

00:10:33As well

00:10:34We'll start briefly

00:10:34Job chapter four

00:10:36But we can learn

00:10:37A lot of things

00:10:38Like this

00:10:39But also it's human nature

00:10:40Just to vent

00:10:41And rant

00:10:43And give our opinion

00:10:44Because the thing is

00:10:46With us

00:10:46Is we think

00:10:47Our perspective

00:10:48Is right

00:10:48Because it's the way

00:10:49We perceive reality

00:10:50Isn't it

00:10:51Rather than

00:10:52Our perception

00:10:53And that's a great difference

00:10:55And when we begin

00:10:56To understand that

00:10:57That will help us

00:10:59Because the scriptures

00:11:00Do say that we're

00:11:01Supposed to love

00:11:02Our neighbour

00:11:03As ourself

00:11:04And love the Lord

00:11:05Our God

00:11:06With everything

00:11:07That we have

00:11:07And in doing that

00:11:09We have to put

00:11:10Ourselves to the side

00:11:12And it's not

00:11:13What we think

00:11:14Is most important

00:11:15It's not what

00:11:15We think is right

00:11:17Is what does

00:11:18God want

00:11:19What is God's desire

00:11:20And how can I

00:11:21Love my neighbour

00:11:22Well you love

00:11:23Your neighbour

00:11:24As you would

00:11:25Yourself

00:11:25You would

00:11:26Have them

00:11:27Sorry

00:11:28You would do to them

00:11:29As that

00:11:29You would them

00:11:30Do to you

00:11:31So that's us

00:11:32Putting ourselves

00:11:33In their shoes

00:11:35Not always

00:11:36Having us

00:11:36At the forefront

00:11:37Of our minds

00:11:38As we go through life

00:11:39Because many people

00:11:40Live like this

00:11:40Don't they

00:11:41Me

00:11:42Me

00:11:42What I want

00:11:43My pursuits

00:11:44My happiness

00:11:45What I think

00:11:45Is mostly

00:11:47Important

00:11:47And most of the time

00:11:48It's to the neglect

00:11:49Of others

00:11:50And we have that

00:11:51Especially in

00:11:52This western world

00:11:54That we live in

00:11:54It's all me

00:11:55Me

00:11:55It's

00:11:57Consumerism

00:11:57It's just

00:11:58What I want

00:11:59What I can have

00:12:00What's most

00:12:00Comfortable and

00:12:01Desirable for me

00:12:03And I don't think

00:12:04Job's friends

00:12:05Realised that

00:12:05Because they didn't

00:12:06Put themselves

00:12:06In his shoes

00:12:08They just saw it

00:12:09From their perspective

00:12:10And that's why

00:12:10They were wrong

00:12:11Because

00:12:12Just through my

00:12:13Constant reading

00:12:14Of the book of Job

00:12:14And you've probably

00:12:15Seen this as well

00:12:16And a lot of the time

00:12:17When people quote

00:12:18The book of Job

00:12:19They're not always

00:12:19Quoting Job

00:12:20A lot of the time

00:12:21They're quoting Job's

00:12:22Friends

00:12:23So you can read

00:12:24Through Job

00:12:24And it's almost like

00:12:25You're reading

00:12:25Through another book

00:12:26Like Proverbs

00:12:27Or the Psalms

00:12:28Because a lot of

00:12:28What they are saying

00:12:29Is true

00:12:30And it holds a lot

00:12:31Of truth

00:12:31And believe me

00:12:32I've got cross-references

00:12:33With other texts

00:12:34In the Bible

00:12:35Continuous notes

00:12:36Of what Job's

00:12:37Friends are actually

00:13:07They're all

00:13:08Going to be

00:13:08Giving their opinion

00:13:09They're all

00:13:10Perspective

00:13:11Right

00:13:11We see this

00:13:11All the time

00:13:12We get a glimpse

00:13:14Into this

00:13:15And I think

00:13:16This is obviously

00:13:16A unique

00:13:17Or maybe

00:13:18An extreme

00:13:19Example

00:13:19But it was

00:13:19A real example

00:13:20That happened

00:13:21And the Bible

00:13:22Records it for us

00:37:39know he's done wickedness he's crafty he's even lying to them in front of their faces with his own

00:37:44words and they accuse him of being wicked and thine iniquities infinite now imagine you're not going

00:37:51through grief imagine it's a happy summer's day for you and you've had a blessed sunday and then

00:37:55your friend says these words to you he says it look imagine your friend said this is not thine

00:38:01iniquities infinite now again i think there is some truth to that in all of us you know

00:38:09like are not our iniquities are they just countless do they not go on and on of course they do

00:38:13but here's what he's saying look job you can't fool me your iniquities just go on and on and on

00:38:18and on

00:38:18and on like that like you know don't try and make yourself righteous in my eyes keep reading verse

00:38:23six for thou has taken a pledge from thy brother for naught now he's actually accusing him not just

00:38:29of having a wicked character but he's actually giving detailed actions that you think job job has

00:38:34done for thou has taken a pledge of thy brother for naught and stripped the naked of their clothing

00:38:40verse seven thou hast not given water to the weary to drink and thou hast withholden bread from

00:38:47the hungry but as for the mighty man he had the earth and the honorable man dwelt in it thou

00:38:53hast sent

00:38:53widows away empty and the arms of the fatherless have been broken all right first of all they start

00:39:00off by saying job we know that you've been an honorable man you've strengthened the weak you've helped

00:39:04people now they're saying the complete opposite aren't they a friend in need is a friend indeed

00:39:11isn't it now and how comfortless have they been and you can see the the words that job said he

00:39:18says

00:39:18look i'm not inferior to you you know i i know the things that you know all these things that

00:39:23you've

00:39:23said to me i would have already known it i've already thought of these things over

00:39:29and what a shame that they wouldn't listen what a shame that all they wanted to do was speak

00:39:34i've i've been guilty of this just just cast in in my lot as it were you know when people

00:39:38are having

00:39:38discussion i i need to kind of say my piece as well so that they don't think i don't know

00:39:43what i'm

00:39:43talking about now let's all go back let's see the mindset of job now i'm gonna go back to chapter

00:39:48six

00:39:48if you can chapter six we'll see a few things that job mentions now some of his thoughts and

00:39:55reflections that he says about himself here are quite telling and and relatable to us as believers

00:40:03now he does acknowledge his friends but i think at the core of it job wants to know how he

00:40:09stands

00:40:09with god job wants to know why god has dealt thus so with him i think that's at the core

00:40:14of job's

00:40:15mindset look at verse eight if we're all down in chapter six verse eight oh that i might have my

00:40:23request and what is this request he says and that god would grant me the thing that i long for

00:40:30even that it would please god to destroy me that he would not loose his hand and cut me off

00:40:37then should i have comfort yea i would harden myself in sorrow let him not spare for i have not

00:40:44concealed

00:40:44the words of the holy one he's saying i can't bear this anymore i wish that god would just end

00:40:51it all

00:40:52i wish that god would not just take these things but he'd take my life but we see this a

00:40:57lot in the

00:40:57bible we we can give you countless examples in the bible we give you elijah we can give you others

00:41:03they felt similar to how job feels now like why god i can't bear this anymore i feel like i've

00:41:10done

00:41:10the right thing and nothing good is happening i feel like i do the right thing and it's of no

00:41:15no gain

00:41:15no value well the bible tells us don't grow weary in well-doing you know don't grow weary christian

00:41:24keep pursuing if thou faint not if thou faint not it says you'll see god do greatness and and wondrous

00:41:32works out of the suffering of his people great things but we have to be patient do you know the

00:41:38only time job is referred to or referenced in the new testament is james chapter five let's just go there

00:41:43for the sake of time anyway james chapter five this is the only time job is actually um quoted in

00:41:48the

00:41:48new testament and look what it says about him i believe this is a good reason why the book of

00:41:56job was

00:41:57written it wasn't just written for job for the people at the time or the people in in that day

00:42:03and age

00:42:04i think it is written for us even more so for our learning uh look here with me here we

00:42:11go

00:42:14so if i just give you context for this we're looking at verse seven onwards this is talking

00:42:20about people that are persecuted they're doing the right thing and they're persecuted they go and work

00:42:25in the fields and they're not being paid for their labor they're they're trying to do right and wrong

00:42:31keeps on happening to them so he says in james five verse seven be patient therefore brethren

00:42:36unto the coming of the lord behold the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth and

00:42:43hath long patience for it until he received the early and latter rain so that means you know you get

00:42:51the early rain and that that that helps bolster the harvest and the latter rain brings it about so

00:42:57that it's perfectly right and he says that he hath patient long patience for it verse eight says be

00:43:04ye also patient now you've heard what the bible says be ye holy for i am holy he tells us

00:43:11be patient

00:43:12because god is also patient why because he wants the harvest he's patient not just all right i've had

00:43:21enough the harvest has taken too long no those locusts they drive me crazy bring it all down no no

00:43:26no

00:43:27he's patient because he wants more of a harvest you know what harvest represents lost souls the fruit

00:43:35that god desires is souls that great harvest that will come about at the end of the world because

00:43:41the field is the world and the harvest are those that are brought in the saved shall go into that

00:43:47barn

00:43:47they'll be called blessed the lost the chaff shall be burnt keep reading with me be also patient in

00:43:54verse eight establish your hearts you know what that means stabilize make sure that you're grounded

00:44:01as a believer establish your hearts because our hearts are going to be swayed especially through

00:44:07those valleys especially when we go through those difficulties our hearts are going to be swayed

00:44:11they're going to be pulled we're going to be taken advantage of in our vulnerability aren't we

00:44:17but he says establish your hearts for the coming of the lord that means we should have our eyes

00:44:23fixed on the lord jesus has he forsaken us no he is with us and he is coming back for

00:44:31us

00:44:31that's a promise that helps the heart of a believer that jesus is returning for his sheep

00:44:39his church awaits his coming doesn't he now keep reading verse nine grudge not one against another

00:44:44brethren lest you be condemned behold the judge standeth before the door now that that goes to

00:44:52how we treat each other don't be bitter don't grudge one another be patient be forgiving be loving

00:45:00why because the judge stands at the door and he will open it when it's time to open it verse

00:45:0610

00:45:07take my brethren the prophets who have spoken in the name of the lord for an example of suffering

00:45:11affliction and of patience so he says look look all the prophets that we read of in the old testament

00:45:16christian they're an example to us of affliction and suffering oh sorry suffering affliction and of

00:45:24patience they're examples to us for that reason because we also need to learn what it is to suffer

00:45:31and we also need to learn what patience truly is and not only that it gives us a specific name

00:45:36of one

00:45:36of these in the old testament behold we count them happy which endure the ones who endure not give up

00:45:42we count them happy which endure endure hardness like a soldier of jesus christ the bible says endure

00:45:49you have the strength to do so because god has given you it endure those things you've heard of the

00:45:56patience

00:45:57of job now most of us think shouldn't the bible say you've heard of the suffering of job

00:46:04you know you've heard of the persecutions of job no no no no he says you've heard of the patience

00:46:09of

00:46:09job learn of his patience learn what he went through and i don't believe that he lost faith

00:46:17because we'll look at some of those verses was he discouraged oh extremely was he downcast extremely

00:46:24did he fully understand no of course he did not but you've learned of the you've heard of the

00:46:29patience of job and look what it finishes here and i've seen the end of the lord that the lord

00:46:36is very

00:46:36pitiful and of tender mercy and we don't just learn oh you know god likes to see his children suffer

00:46:43so

00:46:43that he can poke his finger back in the devil's face and say i told you so that's not why

00:46:47god does

00:46:47that does he it's so that it shows god is very pitiful and of tender mercy

00:46:54now i think we understand his mercy his tender mercy his heartfelt mercy toward us when we do go

00:47:01through suffering because we tend to draw nigh to him during those times everyone go to job 7 i'm i'm

00:47:06opening job 7 already if you go to job 7 verse 7 so that that what he said if only

00:47:12he would take my

00:47:13life away if only he would grant me my request and he says then i'd have comfort that's all job

00:47:19he wants comfort and understanding look at job chapter 7 verse 7 he says this oh remember that

00:47:26my life is wind in in the new testament says that that our life is but a vapor mine i

00:47:32shall see sorry

00:47:35my eye shall no more see good the eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more

00:47:41thine eyes are upon

00:47:42me and i am not as the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away so he that goeth down to the

00:47:48grave

00:47:48shall come up no more so he's saying you know my life is but wind if only it would end

00:47:53quickly

00:47:53now there's a reason why i i read from this verse earlier i got so much out of this chapter

00:47:58alone

00:48:00job chapter 9 let's read uh from verse 1 onwards so this is in response to what bildad said job

00:48:06answered and said i know it is of a truth but how should man be just with god

00:48:14if he will contend with him he cannot answer one of a thousand he is wise in heart and mighty

00:48:21in

00:48:22strength who hath hardened himself against him and hath prospered so job knows this he's saying it to

00:48:28he's like look who's hardened themselves against god and prospered you know who's managed to get one

00:48:34over on god as it were who's managed to deceive god who's managed to kind of worm their way around

00:48:39him

00:48:39and god couldn't do anything about it job knows these truths and he's expressing it back to his

00:48:44friends look at verse 15 with me if you could i'll give you 14 just for a bit more context

00:48:51how much

00:48:52less shall i answer him and choose out my words to reason with him so he's saying if i could

00:48:58like i'd

00:48:59examine every word i could if i was just to ask god a simple question whom though i were righteous

00:49:05he's

00:49:05saying even if i was righteous yet would i not answer and we know that to be true because when

00:49:12god does come when god does answer and he and he asked him those countless questions god just says

00:49:18you know i'm a job says i'm a man of unclean lips he can't possibly speak back to god he

00:49:24says yet would

00:49:25i not answer but i would make supplication to my job you know what he'd say to god and you

00:49:30know we

00:49:31would all say to god we wouldn't say god why did you let it we'd never ever say we'd say

00:49:35it now

00:49:36but when god would truly speak to us we wouldn't dare we would not dare because we know he is

00:49:42righteous

00:49:42we know he is holy and if we just got a slight slight glimpse of that we'd put our hands

00:49:47over our

00:49:48mouths we'd hide ourselves in shame from god because what we'd subtly be doing is accusing god

00:49:54would be accusing him of wronging us and truly when we'd see him we know that's not the case

00:50:00we'd see how lovely he is we'd see how righteous he is and that would never ever enter our minds

00:50:06and he says this i would make supplication to my i'd say lord help me lord be it far from

00:50:13me that i'd

00:50:13say anything against you help me keep reading with me uh go down to verse 20 and 21 if you

00:50:20can

00:50:20in the same chapter he says this this is job again job's not trying to be self-righteous to his

00:50:26friends there's conversation it's escalating and then job feels the need to defend his character

00:50:31because he hasn't actually done anything verse 20 says if i justify myself mine own mouth shall

00:50:39condemn me and that's what his friends were saying to him he says look i know that i know if

00:50:43i claim to

00:50:43be pure and righteous like just me saying those words people would laugh at me i know i know i'd

00:50:49condemn myself if i say i am perfect it shall also prove me perverse though i were perfect he says

00:50:57even

00:50:57if i was perfect even if i had no wrongdoing against my name yet would i not know my soul

00:51:03i would despise

00:51:04my life and truly when we do get the correct perspective of god and ourselves we would truly even

00:51:14if we was perfect we would still be vain in his sight we truly would now let's uh go down

00:51:22a few

00:51:22other things here because i think it's very important when we look at the life of job we see

00:51:28not just his suffering not just his patience but also his faith i believe that that's what was coming

00:51:34out to me when i was reading these scriptures recently go to chapter 13 if you can go to chapter

00:51:4013

00:51:41look at verse 15 i actually have uh this verse framed at my house at the top of my stairway

00:51:48there's

00:51:48this verse job 13 15 now again i i could go through several different verses but just for sake of

00:51:55time

00:51:55i was i was just led to look at some of these job 13 15

00:52:02though he slay me now this is a man who has lost his children this is a man who honestly

00:52:10and justly

00:52:11worked hard to build up his life and has lost everything just just think of the cost i know i

00:52:18know people that have lost financially and i think how unfair is that how unfair and i know other people

00:52:24that have lost people they've lost children wives parents brothers sisters i think how how unfair is

00:52:30that the grief you know now put yourself in job's shoes and try and imagine what he's going through

00:52:37and then he says though he slay me yet will i trust in him but i will maintain mine own

00:52:47ways before him

00:52:48now hey even if something bad happens to you or something just think of the most recent thing

00:52:54that happened to you did this come to your mind even if god were to take my life even if

00:53:02god killed

00:53:02me today i'll still trust him because he's god because he is the righteous judge i would still trust him

00:53:09even if god hung me out to dry tomorrow i'd still trust him would you think like that

00:53:15that's what job thought now sometimes we give job a bad time if all of my words were written down

00:53:23in the midst of my suffering i'd hate to think what people would say of me i'd hate it

00:53:29now just imagine we we have all of job's words that god needed us to hear

00:53:34though he slay me yet will i trust in him

00:53:39would we say that would we follow through with that that's what job said that's what job thought

00:53:46that's what job believed even if god were to hurt me even if god was to do this to me

00:53:52i would still

00:53:53trust him and i have that yeah in a frame at my house and it reminds me whenever i walk

00:53:59up the

00:54:00stairs just whatever god does is right whatever he does is right you know who am i to question him

00:54:09to question his ways go to job chapter 19 together again i think this was a man

00:54:15through his affliction through all of these things through the doubts that his friends are putting in

00:54:22his head i think he still trusted god he still trusted god uh job 19 if you're there look at

00:54:30um

00:54:3221 onwards please look what job says here have pity on me have pity on me oh ye my friends

00:54:42for the hand

00:54:43of god hath touched me why do ye persecute me as god are and are not satisfied with my flesh

00:54:52that's

00:54:52just basically what he's saying you know you're not satisfied with everything i'll go through you

00:54:56got to make it worse for me keep reading verse 22 sorry verse 23 oh that my words were now

00:55:04written

00:55:04oh that they were printed in a book that they were graven with an iron pen and led in the

00:55:12rock forever

00:55:13so he's saying if only the things that i could express the words i could say right now if only

00:55:19they were inscribed and then no one could take them away and what do we have here we have this

00:55:27wonderful book this book of job that has been inscribed i don't think job knew that this book

00:55:32would go on i don't i don't think he believed that before it was written if only his words would

00:55:37have

00:55:37been written in a book and they would be preserved keep reading verse 25 for i know that my redeemer

00:55:44liveth job didn't say i hope he said i know that my redeemer lives i know he lives and what

00:55:54is a

00:55:54redeemer someone that has purchased your freedom someone that has redeemed you at their own cost

00:56:02that's how he saw god now again this is a man who's gone through anguish and grief and he still

00:56:09believes that god is for him but he doesn't understand the confusion the discomfort of course

00:56:17is horrible and no doubt we don't fully understand these things keep reading verse 26 and though after

00:56:23my skin worms destroy this body yet in my flesh shall i see god now i don't know how these

00:56:32guys

00:56:32knew such truths in the old testament they would have no doubt come from god because faith comes by

00:56:37hearing and hearing by the word of god i don't think they had it in written form at the time

00:56:41but

00:56:41job knew biblical truths job knew characteristics of god that were true where did he learn them he knew

00:56:50them he must have learned them somehow but not not just from creation no not just there must be a

00:56:57mighty righteous intelligent invisible creator who must be eternal because he's not bound by time

00:57:03who who must be magnificent and intelligent because we see this vast creation and the beauty of it no no

00:57:10no he knew that there was a resurrection a bodily resurrection because he says this in 26 and though after

00:57:17my skin worms shall destroy this body in my flesh i shall see god not i shall stand before him

00:57:24one day

00:57:25when i leave my flesh behind he's even in my flesh i shall be in body when i see my

00:57:30redeemer

00:57:31he knew these truths thousands of years before christ verse 27 whom i shall see for myself and mine eyes

00:57:40i shall behold and not another though my reins be consumed within me so he's saying i know i shall

00:57:48stand before god i know i shall behold him and see him i know i'll be with him i know

00:57:51that my redeemer

00:57:52lives i know that my god is not just an imagination he's not just a nice thought a nice thought

00:57:58of heaven

00:57:58and everlasting no no no he knows that god is the living god i think he had great faith to

00:58:05know these

00:58:06things and still believe them and not give up on them chapter 23 look at verse 10

00:58:14but he knoweth the way that i take and when he hath tried me i shall come forth as gold

00:58:26when he has tried me i know i shall come forth as gold did job want the suffering no he

00:58:32wanted god to

00:58:32take his life he didn't want to go through it do we want suffering is that what no no do

00:58:38we want to

00:58:38draw closer to god yes we do do we want to be more patient yes we do romans chapter 5

00:58:44talks of

00:58:45tribulation work of patience we get patience from suffering we get patience from trouble don't we

00:58:52but job knows this just think this is the confession of a man in the midst of of this interaction

00:58:58with his

00:58:58friends they're accusing him of wickedness they're accusing him of lies they're accusing him of

00:59:03unrighteousness they're accusing him of being a hypocrite job was a man who had a righteous

00:59:08character to all the people in the land even god said that he was perfect and upright and he eschewed

00:59:13evil that was his character that was his reputation but they said no no you're a hypocrite in secret

00:59:19you've been wicked job and then look at his mindset in the midst of it look at his faith he

00:59:25says

00:59:27he knoweth the way that i take and when he hath tried me when god has bent me when god

00:59:34has tried me

00:59:35when god has stretched me when god has put me through the fire i shall come forth as gold

00:59:42my foot hath held his steps his way have i kept and not declined neither have i gone back

00:59:50from the commandment of his lips i have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food

00:59:59that's a man who's really really trusting god to me in my perspective he believes that this suffering

01:00:08shall lead to something good he believes that he'll be better off after the suffering is gone

01:00:13that's what he believes he believes that he shall come forth as gold he believes that he'll be purified

01:00:18through this and not only that he says i'll esteem his words more than my necessary food do we need

01:00:26food

01:00:27of course we do and then there's also the blessing of good food amazing taste and and just all the

01:00:33blessings

01:00:34that we have from food that god has provided for us but not only that job says i need his

01:00:38words more

01:00:39than my necessary food just the basics i need his words more than that that sounds like a man who

01:00:47trusts

01:00:47god yes he's faltering yes he's shaky but he still has faith and what a wonderful example now let's go

01:00:57to

01:00:57back to job back to job chapter nine just a few pages that that chapter that we read opening up

01:01:04not only that we see job suffering we see his patience

01:01:10but there's also what jumped out to me is the need for a mediator he understands that god has a

01:01:18plan he

01:01:19understands that he's suffering there's a reason for it but he feels so far from god

01:01:26during this time he feels like there's no one who who can truly bring him to that place of

01:01:31understanding because his wife can't his friends can't and job can't fully understand it for himself

01:01:37either but look here with me in verse 32 if you're there in job chapter 9 verse 32 together

01:01:43he is not a man as i am that i should answer him and we should come together in judgment

01:01:51so we all know this is god a man no he's not a man i hear this uh come up

01:01:56all the time there's

01:01:57there's also a quote from numbers chapter 23 samuel chapter 15 it says god is not a man i whenever

01:02:04i

01:02:04interact i i meet countless muslims all the time every day even and i whenever i discuss with them

01:02:09this comes up more than more than you think well the bible says that god's not a man so jesus

01:02:14can't be

01:02:14god well oh you know all right default position we fold is that really the case now jesus is god

01:02:22in

01:02:23the flesh what do you mean what god cannot take on the form of a servant he cannot indwell a

01:02:29body god

01:02:29cannot do that no well the bible says that god's not a man but look at the context even here

01:02:34in job

01:02:34it says he is not a man as i am as in his ways are above my ways he he

01:02:42is more than me he's not

01:02:43a man as i am in numbers it says god is not a man that he should lie but god's

01:02:49not like us and when god

01:02:51became a man was he a liar like us was he a man void of understanding like no no no

01:02:57no jesus christ

01:02:59the righteous of course he wasn't like us he became man but he wasn't like us in that way

01:03:05look at verse 33 neither is there any days man betwixt us that might lay his hand upon us both

01:03:16so he says god's not a man but even if god was a man like you know i can't even

01:03:22compare imagine god

01:03:23sat next to you in the midst of your suffering and explained why the suffering is would we truly

01:03:29understand it would we i don't think we would and job knows that and he says but even even if

01:03:36there

01:03:36was a middleman that could you know at least line it up at least at least bring me to him

01:03:42that might

01:03:43ease the pain that might make it easier that might explain things if only there was a daysman a daysman

01:03:49means a middleman a mediator a go-between that's what daysman means everyone go to job chapter 16 just a

01:03:56few pages to your right if you can job chapter 16 look at verse 20

01:04:03and he says this in verse 20 my friends scorn me but mine eye poureth out tears unto god

01:04:13so i uh had to deal with a child earlier they uh their sister got a reward for behaving very

01:04:20well

01:04:20but the boy didn't quite you know earn it um i feel like you don't do justice when you give

01:04:26someone

01:04:27something they didn't deserve because they always expect it and you know you're not training them

01:04:30correctly but the boy was wailing and crying and he got angry and angry and angry and you know

01:04:35and uh yeah there's no consoling him but uh he had tears of sorrow because he didn't get what he

01:04:44wanted

01:04:45if we would have just given him what he wanted the tears would have gone away okay job's different

01:04:51here because he says look mine eye poureth out tears unto god job's not crying just because of his grief

01:04:59just to to express his upset or anger no no no no he's crying to the lord that's who his

01:05:06tears go out

01:05:06to i think it's important to remember and then look at verse 21 oh the and in the midst of

01:05:13his grief

01:05:13in the midst of his sorrow in the midst of his weeping oh that one might plead for a man

01:05:18with god

01:05:19as a man pleadeth for his neighbor oh if only there was someone that could on my behalf go to

01:05:29god

01:05:29for my sake only if there was someone who could be a mediator for me

01:05:35when a few years are come then i shall go away whence i shall not return

01:05:41job not only was patient through his suffering we learn of his sufferings we learn of job's faith

01:05:46i've learned a lot through just reading job's words and i see his faith you know i don't know if

01:05:52i would

01:05:53be as faithful job didn't curse god he cursed his day he he didn't want to be in that situation

01:05:59and

01:05:59none of us would none of us would volunteer for such things let's not let's not be ignorant or naive

01:06:05let's not lie to ourselves we wouldn't volunteer such things would we but we also see job's faith

01:06:12and his need for a mediator and i believe on the inside of man every man i truly believe this

01:06:19because

01:06:19it's biblical is everyone knows they need a mediator everyone knows they need god and they can't quite

01:06:27make it to him and you know who that mediator becomes a priest a guru a teacher even themselves

01:06:36and they form and fashion god in their own image to appease their conscience and they make their own

01:06:42way to god somehow usually their own mediator they become but job knew how righteous and holy god is

01:06:50and he knows he needs a mediator how much more today when we know of this great mediator the lord

01:06:59jesus

01:06:59i i believe job is set approximately just uh you know i can't give you exact years but approximately

01:07:072000 bc okay now how long ago christ was on the earth 2000 years ago just think job was just

01:07:16as far

01:07:16away from christ time wise as we are today and he saw his need for a mediator now 2000 years

01:07:23on we read

01:07:24this text today that god's preserved look in 1 john chapter 2 verse 1 you've probably heard it read it

01:07:30memorized it perhaps you'd no doubt familiar with it my little children these things write i unto you

01:07:36that ye sin not and if any man sin we have an advocate with the father jesus christ the righteous

01:07:47it doesn't say we had we will have it says we have an advocate with the father you know what

01:07:54that

01:07:55means we have a defender we have a mediator with the father jesus christ the righteous and how beautiful

01:08:02is that now i i do believe that job knew that but he didn't quite see the full revelation of

01:08:09that that

01:08:09we can see today and what what a privilege what an honor what an insight that we can see that

01:08:15jesus is

01:08:16the answer jesus is who job needed he couldn't fully explain that but in his own words he knew he

01:08:24needed

01:08:25a righteous mediator between him and god that might bring him to god that would give him understanding

01:08:30because he knows if god comes down to his level job couldn't possibly do anything and he can't bring

01:08:37himself to god there has to be a mediator there has to be and we have to make that mediator

01:08:44known to

01:08:44all other people and praise be to god we have him and we can make him known others need him

01:08:51others need

01:08:52him and usually in the midst of suffering in the midst of loss people realize their need for god

01:08:58and it's not nice to say because i don't like to sound pessimistic i don't like to sound

01:09:03you know the term that gets thrown around now is uh giving people the black pill

01:09:08you know the pessimistic version uh pessimistic answer as it were but the bible does say it's

01:09:15better to go into the house of mourning than a feasting you know why people draw closer to god

01:09:29for god and usually god shows us our need for him in times of trouble so may we remember that

01:09:36we be there when times of trouble come like solid rocks may our hearts be stable like the book of

01:09:42james said so that when trouble does come we might be able to comfort them and show them who god
