00:01What the intention behind this style was to do something that's quite, that
00:05respects the landscape and here we are in Bali. So we use a lot of natural
00:09materials found in Indonesia.
00:18Hi Bali interiors, I'm Ed, welcome to my house and let's take a peek in my paradise.
00:32I bought this land in 2016 when they were still nice and quiet. We worked together with Alejandro
00:39Borrego, who is a very talented architect.
00:43So we use a lot of natural materials found in Indonesia, a lot of wood throughout, ule
00:48and bankirai and so on.
00:51What we try to achieve is how we can maintain and respect the traditional Balinese elements
00:58while still making it a bit modern. A lot of, I guess you would call it minimal and brutalist
01:02lines. We kind of tried to achieve that combination.
01:11I'm really into open space living. So we have the living room, dining and kitchen, it's all in one
01:16because, you know, I blur it all together, especially when we have friends over, people are everywhere.
01:21But what we try to do here is to combine things as with the architecture of the house,
01:26which is traditional and vernacular. It is also modern.
01:39And this is the dining room and kitchen, which is a lie because it's the same room as the living
01:44room.
01:45But yeah, a big table so we can have a lot of friends come over.
01:51And you have a lot of little architectural elements that showcase that.
01:55The kitchen is a simple example. This screen, it connects inside to outside.
01:59So you kind of blur and lose that boundary between what is inside and outside.
02:03The countertop is a pigmented concrete, which is pretty much just a concrete that the color into.
02:07And that's the other main material that's used in this house, apart from the wood.
02:17So this is my bedroom. It's where I sleep.
02:20Going back to the theme of how we blend the inside and the outside, I think the bedroom kind of
02:24does the same thing.
02:25Building wise, you can see there's not much and that's done on purpose to be subtle so that it actually
02:32acts as a blank canvas for what's outside, which is, you know, the rice fields, the river and all that.
02:43Our attention is drawn to the sounds of the river, the greenery outside, the rice field and so on.
02:48And it's actually quite nice for me to wake up to it, to the sound of the rice field and
02:53this river down here.
03:00This is my bathroom, where I do all my bathroom things.
03:03This shower with a bit of a garden, again, it keeping consistent to the theme of blurring the lines between
03:09indoors and outdoors.
03:11So we're in an indoor bathroom, but we have a bit of a small garden, but also a bit of
03:15visual permeability to the outside space.
03:17And it just makes it more that we are in nature.
03:23And of course, the beauty of living in Indonesia is that we have the creative freedom to make things.
03:29I designed these towel holders, which I also had made, nice and slim.
03:33And yeah, a few iron laundry and stuff.
03:43And now we go to kind of the living room.
03:46This room actually can be, it's kind of convertible.
03:49It can be a bedroom, but because I'm alone, I made it a living room so that when it's hot
03:53upstairs, you can turn on the AC and just hang out here.
03:57Normally, when I have guests and there are not enough rooms, I also plop like a memory foam on this
04:03and make this a mattress because the dimensions are 90 by 200.
04:06So that's two twin size mattresses.
04:09It also has its own bathroom.
04:10So that's why it can be a bedroom.
04:15In this bathroom, it's the same principle as you have in the other bathroom and the rest of the house.
04:20How do you blend indoors and outdoors?
04:22So here we're inside, but it kind of feels like we're outside, which is nice in this environment.
04:29And now the guest bedroom, I guess.
04:39This room in particular, sometimes I actually just sleep here because this room is a bit darker.
04:44So it has a bit more of this cave feeling.
04:46And I kind of like that.
04:48It's just a bit different.
04:49The other one has a pool.
04:50It's bright.
04:51It's airy.
04:52This one's a bit dark.
04:53So when I just feel like megging out, I veg out here.
04:59When it was designed, we also thought about privacy.
05:01I think this room is a bit more private in the sense that it's kind of separated from the rest
05:05of the house.
05:06Guests or myself, if we want to like sneak in or not, we can.
05:09There's like a direct path to the main door without having to go to the rest of the house.
05:13And that was the idea behind it.
05:15So it's a holistic sense of privacy.
05:20This is the swimming pool.
05:22I mean, it's not a lap pool or anything.
05:24It's just more of a hanging out pool.
05:25There's like steps on all sides.
05:27And apart from acting as a step, it's also a nice place where people can just relax.
05:35What I like about it is also it kind of has, again, that contrast.
05:40And by that, then the greenery and the rice fields and everything can stand out a bit more.
05:44It's like they complement instead of compete with each other.
05:51So this is the terrace.
05:52Again, going back to the idea of working with the land, we didn't want to build too much here.
05:57So you have the main building and then we just left this as it kind of is built around the
06:02land.
06:02Not too many buildings that are disproportionate to it.
06:07But there are different like hanging out spaces.
06:10The one there is a bit more intimate and the one here is a bit more social.
06:14And it's nice to be here in the mornings or late afternoons for coffee, hanging out with friends.
