00:01Hi Bali Interiors, my name's Zoe, I'm the creative director of Mr Zimmy.
00:05Welcome to Villa Mizzy, come take a peek in my paradise.
00:21This is Villa Mizzy and this is 15 years in the making.
00:25I've been lucky enough to have a few different villas in Bali for 15 years.
00:30Bali is my second home and so over the years I've been searching for the final dream villa and this
00:37is it.
00:38We have done an extensive renovation to this place, we didn't build it from scratch.
00:43I found it and I felt like the bones were so amazing that we had to use it and restore
00:48it back to its beautiful self that it is.
00:51Come and have a look in the kitchen.
00:58Okay so with the kitchen I wanted something really really simple, just all paired back with natural materials and colours.
01:07So we designed it really simply with just all concrete bench tops and then all of the cabinetry is made
01:16out of something called Lupo, which is made from bamboo.
01:19It's all handmade, they slice it down and they stitch it together and so that's what we've ended up with
01:25all the cabinetry.
01:26And I just think it gives it a really beautiful soft touch.
01:29Also big windows opening out to the tropical plants so it really feels like Bali when you're in here.
01:35So this is the kitchen nook area and I have to say it's one of my favourite places in the
01:39whole villa.
01:41So we've got this beautiful antique table that we got and we created this round really cosy breakfast nook area
01:48and then the cabinetry with all of our ceramics that's also made out of that same bamboo.
02:00So this is our huge living zone which is the thing that drew me most to this villa before we
02:08did the big renovation.
02:09I have four children and always lots of extra people and lots of family members here.
02:15We have a big dining table to sit the family so we have breakfast around there or we sometimes end
02:22up here.
02:23We have breakfast, lunch and dinner at this big table.
02:27I wanted it to be really solid to fit the space cos this space is so big with 10 metre
02:33high ceilings.
02:34So all of the furniture that we custom made had to have like a really solid feel to it.
02:39So as you can see this table is so thick and chunky and I think it fits really well in
02:44the space.
02:45We also have a huge sofa so we can fit all of our family and friends here together that we
02:54custom made.
02:55I had an idea I went to a villa in Greece and they had a massive one like this.
03:01So I wanted to try and replicate it but on scale.
03:05So we've done that and it's so comfortable and I love it.
03:09So something we really need to talk about in this villa is the ceilings.
03:13Myself and the girl that I got to help me with designing the interiors had all these crazy ideas about
03:20what we wanted to do with the ceilings because they are such a feature of the villa.
03:25And so we came up with this pattern that was actually really difficult to try and replicate cos we had
03:30to fit it exactly in the space.
03:32We came up with this pattern that goes across all of the ceilings using the same bamboo handmade texture.
03:39It was a labour of love. It took weeks and weeks and weeks to make and install it but I
03:44think that it really does make the villa feel so warm and inviting and really unique cos I haven't seen
03:50it anywhere else.
03:56So this is our home office and we split our time between Bali and Byron Bay so whenever we're here
04:04because we produce here we always need an office to work out of and we needed a lot of space
04:09so we've turned this mezzanine level into an office.
04:17So previously in the old villa there was the mezzanine here. We changed it by adding a much more solid
04:24staircase in.
04:25There was an understair storage space that we thought we could do something really cool with and have a look
04:31what we've done.
04:35We turned it into a cinema room which has been a godsend.
04:40In the heat of the day if we're here on holidays it's nice to have a place that's really air
04:45conned because of the 10 metre high ceilings in the living room we couldn't make that air conned.
04:50So we turned what was an under staircase storage into probably the kids favourite room in the whole house and
04:57I think it's worked out really well.
05:06So originally with the old villa before we did our big renovation it was three separate buildings.
05:13We like to have everything connected when we're in Bali all the bedrooms connected living room connected similar to what
05:20we sort of have in Australian homes.
05:22So we came up with a really good concept of how to connect the buildings.
05:27We created this sort of internal light well turned out beautifully.
05:32The light that we get through the glass and the wood in the afternoon creates its own piece of art.
05:37Which is why we decided to not put art on this wall because it moves up all the way to
05:43the wall.
05:43So if you come through I'll show you how you get to the bedrooms.
05:46So this is our first bedroom the one that connects through to the living area.
05:51We've done this as can be adults can be kids because it all connects in together.
05:57Just a really simple bedroom.
06:00I can confirm it's so relaxing to sleep in these rooms just because there's not too much going on it's
06:07really simple.
06:09We just kept all the same finishes throughout the bedrooms the bathrooms and the outside.
06:15I wanted to have the same finishing so that it all had this indoor outdoor flow.
06:23So this is the kids bathroom and the first bedroom that they share together.
06:28Because we were combining it between two we wanted to originally in the old house it was the big garden
06:35the indoor outdoor bathrooms that you see in lots of traditional Balinese villas.
06:39I wanted to enclose it to make it feel like a really big space.
06:43So we were able to create this really big bathroom.
06:47Again just the really simple finishes.
06:50It feels really nice and cool which is what you need with the Bali heat.
06:54So this is how you get through to the bedrooms they're all interconnecting.
06:58So it works really well for families when they're staying there or they can all be shut off to be
07:03individual bedrooms.
07:04This is my kids bedroom.
07:06We have done inbuilt bunks all made out of the same Lupo material as well as the wood.
07:13Bought all of the French linen over from Australia.
07:16Again just to make it feel so simple and relaxed for sleeping.
07:21Let me show you guys the master bedroom.
07:29So this is our master bedroom.
07:30We're so lucky to have such a big space.
07:33I really feel so blessed.
07:35It's funny because we've got the kids bedroom through that door which connects in but as usual they all end
07:40up in here.
07:41So it's actually good that I've got space for four kids to share with us.
07:44Again just wanted to keep it all really simple, neutral colours.
07:49All of the wood, the dark wood, the pieces that we custom designed for the space I think has worked
07:54really well.
07:55Aside from the custom furniture that we had made for the master, there's a couple of other things that I
08:00really love.
08:01One is this rug.
08:03We've got a few of these rugs throughout the house.
08:05So appreciative for the lovely people that made these rugs for us.
08:09Every single part is hand knotted.
08:12They're made out of rope and the feeling underfoot is really nice on top of obviously the cool floors that
08:19we've chosen.
08:19Let me show you guys the master bathroom.
08:22Come through.
08:28So this is our master bathroom.
08:31Also one of my favourite parts of the villa because it was a garden and a bathroom originally.
08:37But we've decided to make one big really bright airy space but enclose it in.
08:43We have sliding doors to let the light and the air through when we feel like we need a little
08:49bit of air through here.
08:50But we're so blessed with so much space.
08:53I decided I wanted all of our wardrobes in the bathroom.
08:57So that when you jump out of the bath or the shower you can get changed without having to go
09:01into the bedroom.
09:02We have our toilet through here, our big sinks, our bar and then our hidden shower which is through here.
09:11Which works beautifully because if you stand here the view that you get to the little courtyard is lovely.
09:21One of the things that I think is really great about this villa is that we're so lucky that we've
09:25got this huge grass area.
09:27Which not only does it make it feel really fresh and special and you don't see a lot of these
09:33in Bali villas these days.
09:35It's so good for my kids to be able to play.
09:37They set up soccer nets here and play soccer.
09:39But it also creates a good space between our side of the villa and then the guest wing and I'll
09:45show you that now.
09:48So this is the guest wing.
09:50Again bought all of the beautiful linen over from Australia.
09:54Lots of comments on that when people stay because it's so breezy.
09:57But again just kept the really simple, simple textures, custom made furniture, the beautiful rug, some more of the African
10:05mud cloths.
10:05So they've got a little area that they can hang out and then we've got the kids space through here
10:11with formal bunk beds.
10:18This is our outdoor dining area.
10:20When it's not too hot depending on the season this is where we like to eat.
10:24We also like to have lunch here as well so you can jump out of the pool straight to this
10:28dining area.
10:29The travertine table is by far the best part of it all.
10:34It was custom made for the space and aside from looking really luxurious and amazing it's so easy to clean
10:41with the water on it.
10:42So we also really changed the exterior, the garden, we made some changes to the pool.
10:48Originally a lot of this, this was all garden bed through here.
10:52The pool was only this section.
10:55So we put all decking through here, added in all these just really simple garden beds only using three types
11:02of plants.
11:03I wanted to use three types of materials for the interior and three types of plants for the outside.
11:08Just so it all feels really considered.
11:11So we added in the decking which really creates this big sense of space that it didn't feel like that
11:16before.
11:16I think it's worked really well and it just feels really simple and calming.
