Willard and Dibs react to the reporting of Kyle Shanahan's car accident and ensuing injuries. What happened here, and do fans have a right to know things like this earlier than this?

00:00I find this to be a fascinating conversation, an understandable one and a frustrating one
00:06all at once.
00:07And I think we'd really love to involve a lot of you in this.
00:11I think there are a lot of perspectives here that to me are all sort of fair, but I find
00:18it also to be there's a lot of different perspectives.
00:21It's a lot of variance here.
00:23So 888-957-9570.
00:26If there's anything you want to say with regard to this Kyle Shanahan car wreck and how it
00:36has been delivered to the public, the first thing I want to say, and quite frankly, in
00:42some ways, the only thing I want to say is, coach, I hope you're okay.
00:49I hope you and your family are okay.
00:52And I know that he's alive and he's at practice the last two days and that makes everybody
00:59go, oh, cool.
01:00He's okay.
01:00Well, he have 40 stitches in his face.
01:03He almost lost an eye.
01:05He's got sunglasses on round the clock.
01:08He is absolutely still dealing with concussion symptoms.
01:12His wrist is broken.
01:13And what no one has talked about is the mental side of something like that.
01:19I have got to believe that that shakes a family to its absolute core.
01:26And to act like 13 days later, that's just gone.
01:30Let me share with you something that probably shouldn't even be in this conversation because
01:35I'm already uncomfortable with the fact that here at work, there's been a lot of, hey,
01:40you were in a car accident recently because my God, I do not want my accident to be compared
01:46to Kyle Shanahan because Kyle Shanahan's was really, really serious.
01:50And I was lucky.
01:52Nobody even had a mark on them in the car accident that I was in.
01:56Yep.
01:56But let me tell you something a month later.
01:59And I was not at fault at all in my accident, but I am driving differently.
02:05I am totally tentative.
02:07Oh, I bet.
02:08It is scary.
02:09It's super, super jarring.
02:11And I think I've been in one accident and I was driving on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard
02:19in San Anselmo and I saw somebody who I knew next to me.
02:22And so I looked at it and he started waving and running material.
02:26I turned back around.
02:27Whammy.
02:28Wham.
02:28And I just whammed into the back of somebody.
02:30It was completely my fault.
02:31No injuries.
02:32But to your point, it took some time before you could like, you know, let that go and,
02:37you know, get back to, and I'm not a fast driver or reckless driver, but it definitely
02:41stays with you for a long time.
02:43It stays with you.
02:44I was still like, I was kind of, you'd lay down in bed at night and the visuals are still
02:49flying around in my head for at least a week or so.
02:52It just getting into a car feels different.
02:56Now, if you're in an experience like that and you have major injuries, you know, you're
03:04a dad.
03:05Like, forget the wide nine for a damn second.
03:09You're a dad.
03:10You're a husband.
03:12And something like that happens?
03:14Like, hold on a second.
03:17Life flashes before your eyes.
03:20And so, that's my first thought.
03:23I really hope that Kyle and his family are navigating this.
03:29I hope mental health is okay.
03:30I hope that he gets himself back to full strength.
03:35And whenever that is, is when that is.
03:37The next thought is, it really, really bugs me in 2026 that no matter what it is that happens
03:45in life, it's no different than when there's a school shooting and we wait four minutes
03:49before we start arguing with each other over whose fault it is and how it should be talked
03:55about and whether thoughts and prayers is kind or sarcastic.
04:00And this happened on a much lower scale here where Kyle Shanahan was in a life-threatening
04:07accident and within four minutes, social media is screaming at each other over whether or
04:15not it's okay that this happened 11 days ago and certain beat writers knew like tiny
04:22little bits and pieces and damn it, they didn't tell everybody because they have an obligation
04:27to tell everybody.
04:29Yeah, I don't, that part of it I'm not getting.
04:31I don't get that, but the thing that strikes me, there's so much about this that is striking
04:37me as odd.
04:39And yes, the other driver, thankfully she, I guess you were telling me she, whoever that
04:45individual is apparently was not badly injured or injured at all.
04:50And the injuries that Kyle sustained are so severe.
04:54I have like a million questions and I'm looking at the location, the alleged location of the
05:00accident, which is about a block away from the campus, Stanford university and looking at
05:07this intersection and just doing a Google age.
05:09I believe the speed limit is 25 miles an hour.
05:12And when you have injuries of this severity, it seems to me that the neither car was going
05:1825 miles an hour.
05:19I don't know how fast you have to go to have a crash to where you have this level of
05:24injury.
05:25And I just, I'm wondering about the 11 day delay.
05:29How did, how did this happen?
05:31And 11 days went by to where it didn't get revealed in any way, shape or form.
05:37And I know that it's because it's the off season.
05:39And so Kyle, it's not like Kyle had to go to work the next day and he didn't show up
05:43at
05:43practice and whatnot.
05:44But I just have a lot of questions about how this happened, what the speed was.
05:50And ultimately it's none of my business.
05:51And I get that.
05:52But when you have something like this happen and 11 days go by and then was it like Friday
05:58or Saturday or Saturday, I think when the news got released that, Oh, by the way, uh,
06:04yeah, Kyle had this accident and you know, 40 stitches in the face, broken nose, multiple
06:09broken ribs and he has a concussion that's going to keep him out of practice.
06:13But you know, the vets report on Monday, see you there.
06:16It felt to me like, you know, and again, maybe this is my spidey sense, but it seems like
06:21there's more to this story than we're being told.
06:24And I know that immediately they're like alcohol and drugs were not, not a part of either of
06:29the drivers.
06:30And I was just looking at the story and I played, I don't think you heard it, but I played
06:34the
06:34911 recording, which there's not much to it.
06:38It's basically the recording and then the officer saying, yes, I'll respond.
06:42The accident happened at like six 15 in the evening.
06:45Okay.
06:45So it wasn't one of these classic, like two 28 in the morning, somebody is coming from
06:50the bar.
06:50So I just am curious.
06:52And again, I don't deserve to know none of us do, but an 11 day gap and an accident of
06:59this severity in a place where I think it's 25 miles an hour.
07:04I just have questions.
07:05But 25 miles an hour and people obviously go maybe 30 or whatever.
07:08I'm not offended by that.
07:10If you have, and I have no idea.
07:12I know nothing about this accident.
07:14But my accident was in a 25 mile an hour zone and I barely hit the brake and I plow
07:19like
07:20these two cars ended up off the road and totaled 25 miles an hour.
07:26But were you actually going 25 or I thought you were at the stoplight and then you just
07:30went to go?
07:31No, no, no.
07:31I was, I had a clear lane and someone pulled right in front of me and I barely even had
07:37a chance to get my foot to the brake and plow.
07:39And I mean, if you looked at the two cars, you would not be like, oh, I'm just going,
07:44he was going 25 and she was probably going about 10.
07:47Like she just pulled right in front of me.
07:50And so like the whole thing, you can have significant impact at that speed.
07:58So I have no idea.
07:59But here's a question I'd love to ask you.
08:01And again, David Lombardi will join us in 15 minutes.
08:04This won't all be about Kyle.
08:05We want to talk about some football as well with what we're all seeing down there.
08:09You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports
08:14Station and the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries.
08:17He's always live on the free Odyssey app coming to you live from the Laughing Monk studios.
08:20I have no idea how this information ends up with Tim Kawakami, Matt Barrows, Matt Mayoko,
08:26Jennifer Lee Chan.
08:27I have no idea how this ends up getting to them.
08:31The one who's been the most outspoken on it in a public forum has been Tim Kawakami.
08:37He states that, for example, he knew on maybe Thursday that when they arrived at camp on
08:47Saturday, Kyle would not be the one handling head coaching press conference duties.
08:55And did he know that there was a car accident?
08:58Let me ask you something.
09:00If you were a quote unquote 49ers journalist, let's say you come into this information last
09:07Wednesday, there was a car accident and Kyle got hurt and camp is opening this weekend.
09:15And at least at the beginning, it's going to be a little bit different.
09:20But hey, 49er beat reporter, this is a sensitive thing for the family.
09:28There's a lot going on.
09:31Kyle's kids are pretty freaked the heck out.
09:33And Kyle's roughed up a little bit.
09:35And the family is asking that right now, we don't get into this yet until we have a better
09:45sense of kind of how we're going to handle all this.
09:50So you have some information, but the family is asking that this be off the record right
09:58now.
09:59What do you do?
10:00Depends on two things.
10:02One, how do you roll as a journalist?
10:05Tim Kawakami has got to be 40 years, 35.
10:09Sorry, Tim, if I'm overestimating your age, I think you're my age.
10:12So it might only be 30, 35, but he has been an above board, not a burn it down kind
10:19of journalist.
10:20So if you're one of those people, and there are some in this market who, you know, I want
10:25I want the scoop and I don't I don't give a bleep.
10:27If I burn my sources on this, I'm going with it.
10:30He's not that guy.
10:31And then the second piece is how for me anyway, how pressing is this to the the core of what
10:39we're all doing as 49er fans and people who are going to like really learn about the Niners
10:46and we're all in on the Niners, because if Kyle Shanahan gets in an accident and he can't
10:51coach a game on Sunday, well, that becomes an immediate story.
10:54But this is the offseason.
10:55So for me, there's no major urgency.
10:58And I would imagine that when Tim Kawakami and others found out about it, I would bet that
11:04the 49ers did exactly what you said, which is, hey, you know, this is it's obviously going
11:08to come out very soon when he can't coach at practice.
11:11But in the meantime, we're hoping that you'd be sensitive to the family and this and that.
11:17And reminds me a little bit of the Andrew Wiggins situation where that was where my head
11:21went to people probably at the time knew what was going on.
11:25And the Warriors and the Wiggins family or whomever said, hey, even if you know why he's
11:30not here, we'd appreciate it because, you know, it's a family thing.
11:33And he's a private guy.
11:35And so you as a journalist have that choice to make.
11:37Yep.
11:38It's fascinating to me what we have all decided we get to know.
11:43That's my response to this.
11:45It's just fascinating to me.
11:47And there is a whole journalism thing in here, right?
11:50There's ethics.
11:51And you know what I mean?
11:52How do you handle information that you know?
11:54And if you if you have the info and you hold on to it, you get painted as like the
11:59old
11:59boy network where everybody used to go to a bar late at night.
12:02Right.
12:03And they'll have drinks together and you let the reporters know how you'd like the stories
12:08to be written.
12:09Look, I get that side of it.
12:12I really do.
12:13If we're talking about something that is either nefarious in nature or directly affecting the
12:22sport in that moment.
12:24I love what you just said.
12:25This is the offseason.
12:26If there were a game on Sunday and Kyle was potentially going to miss that game.
12:33Now we have something that is relevant to a 49er football game.
12:39And if you're a 49er beat reporter, I would imagine that that's the kind of information
12:44you might be in a safe place to start reporting.
12:48But on, as it turns out, I guess now it was 13 days ago.
12:53So on July 14th, camp is not open.
12:57There is not a game that month or next month for that matter.
13:02And somebody is in an horrific car accident.
13:07I don't understand all of these people who believe that they deserve to know that.
13:13I know that you want to know.
13:15We all want to know.
13:17I love that you brought up the Wiggins things.
13:19First thing that popped into my head.
13:21So many people on this station and listeners to this station.
13:26Oh, what is going on?
13:28Guess what?
13:29You don't get to know.
13:30You don't get to know because it's private and it is not relevant to anything that matters
13:39to you right now.
13:40Just because you want to know and a journalist might know 10% of the story, I would argue
13:48A, you don't get to know, number one.
13:51And number two, that journalist is really riding the line of being irresponsible if they start
13:56reporting a bunch of crap when they don't have all of the details.
13:59And that's where this, I think, lies for me.
14:01It still does at this hour.
14:03And this is why, for me, it is really kind of fascinating because it did happen 13 days
14:09ago now.
14:10And still, like, there's the 911 call that now the New York Post has been able to get,
14:15but it's not a 911 call that Kyle Shanahan made.
14:18It's an automated call that goes to the officer who then responds to the intersection.
14:23That's all there is.
14:25So, like, who was the other party involved in the crash?
14:28And, you know, what happened to the vehicle?
14:32Are there pictures of the vehicles in the accident scene?
14:35Were there any witnesses to the crash?
14:37And for me, there are so many questions that, again, we don't automatically get to have the
14:43answers.
14:43But when you hear the story, when you see it, and you think about all of the injuries he
14:48had with three broken ribs and a broken nose and 40 stitches in the face and almost lost
14:53the eye?
14:54Like, this had to be a pretty horrific accident.
14:58And so, I don't know, was there, was he wearing a seatbelt?
15:02Did the airbag deploy?
15:03And maybe it's the traffic nerd in me?
15:06But I'm just fascinated.
15:08And again, I'm not going to, like, go down to Palo Alto and knock on the door and try
15:12to get into the archives and find out.
15:14But I'm just really amazed that in the two weeks since this has happened, there are really
15:20no additional details, no eyewitnesses who've come forward.
15:24Like, this happened at 6.15.
15:25Like, I share that.
15:26I share that with you.
15:27You know, Paulie Palo Alto guy who just happened to be chilling, walking his dog, and you see
15:32the accident, like, nothing has really come out from anybody.
15:36No.
15:36No.
15:37And so, yeah, I can share my surprise with you on that.
15:39And I know that you have these questions, and these are fair questions.
15:43My opinion on what I'm saying right now will change if there was a crime committed.
15:48I have no reason to think that there was, but maybe there was.
15:51Was somebody going 80?
15:53Now we have a different conversation.
15:55Right.
15:55Now we have a different conversation.
15:57Or if somebody was, in fact, inebriated, and, you know, police have, you know, did they
16:03do toxicology on Kyle Shanahan and or the other person?
16:07And if they didn't, why didn't they?
16:09And if they did, and in fact, they reported right away that, you know, drugs and alcohol
16:14were not a part of this.
16:15Not a part of it.
16:16And I, like, listen, I'm like everybody else.
16:18I'm not getting on anybody for having their curiosity.
16:22We're all human beings.
16:23We have curiosity.
16:24We can have questions about how did this go the way that it went.
16:29And maybe those questions will be answered in time.
16:32And just like Andrew Wiggins, maybe they won't.
16:35Maybe they won't.
16:37But this one's interesting to me.
16:39Because, by the way, here's another good example.
16:41Let's talk about Wiggins for a second.
16:43How many times has someone who's in the reporter world kind of done a wink-wink on this show
16:50or in any other conversations you've had to where you can tell they know.
16:57They know what's going on with Wiggins.
17:00I can give you the names.
17:03Like, dude, Kendra Andrews came on this show and she was like, yeah, dude, it's not that.
17:10It's not what you're always thinking.
17:13Am I not supposed to?
17:15There's a salacious rumor about his wife or his baby mom or girlfriend or whatever who was, you know,
17:20maybe his kid's not their kid and all the rest of it.
17:23Should you or I have grilled Kendra?
17:25Hey, Kendra, you've clearly got information about a celebrity who plays sports in the Bay Area.
17:31You have an obligation right now on this radio show to tell the whole world what the hell's going on
17:37with Drew.
17:38I just don't get it.
17:40I don't understand why a man who I think the majority of this area really, really respects,
17:49has done wonderful things here in the Bay Area, gets in a horrible car accident,
17:54and for many of you, the first or second thought within the first few minutes is,
17:59why didn't we know about this earlier?
18:02Did any, like, can we stop and just be a human for a second?
18:06Well, it's funny you say that because I have that exact same question,
18:10but it's not in a demanding way.
18:12It's almost like, how did we not hear about this earlier?
18:15And I think that's fair, but there are a lot of people who are pissed
18:18and they're coming down all of the beat writers' roads.
18:21I was texting with Barrows last night.
18:24He's going to come on the show this week.
18:27And I, like, part of the reason I joked with him, I said,
18:31you need to come on the show.
18:33You need to explain to everybody.
18:34That's right.
18:35When did you know?
18:36Where the hell you've been for the last 13 weeks?
18:38He joked.
18:39He goes, you know, as it turns out, I knew before the accident even happened.
18:43That's funny.
18:44And I've been holding it since June.
18:46Yeah.
18:47I mean, that's funny.
18:48It's not funny because it's a serious accident, but that's a funny retort.
18:51Right.
18:52Like, I don't, I mean, I don't know, man.
18:55So, if you're curious, this is my opinion, that's a safe space.
19:01If you're mad, what the hell is wrong with you?
19:05What is wrong with you?
19:06Yeah, I don't.
19:07Are you going to turn this accident into a journalistic integrity story?
19:11And give me a break, Mike Florio, waving your finger at everybody for not talking about this
19:18when your co-host is his best friend getting pictures from the accident scene.
19:24Right.
19:25And you're going to wave your finger at everyone else for not talking about Chris Sims, who
19:29was roommates with Kyle Shanahan in Texas, who allegedly got a text from Kyle Shanahan's
19:36wife saying, oh my God, there's been an accident.
19:39It's not really alleged.
19:40He shared the story himself.
19:41Right.
19:42I didn't know if it was, you know, Mandy who sent him the pictures, whatever, Mandy Shanahan
19:46and, you know, pictures of Kyle, like horrific pictures of what Kyle looked like after the
19:52accident.
19:52So, would he not have told Mike Florio for 11 days about the information that he received?
19:59Or did Mike Florio, maybe Mike Florio should have gotten mad at his co-host, who opted to
20:04act as a best friend rather than a journalist.
20:07Maybe Mike Florio should have broken the story then, as opposed to getting mad at people for
20:12not breaking the story.
