NECA Robocop Ultimate ED-209 Re Review

00:05Here's your relook at the NECA toys RoboCop Ultimate Ed 209.
00:16The NECA RoboCop Ed 209 Deluxe Action Figure with Sound is a massive movie-accurate collectible
00:22designed to scale perfectly with NECA's standard 7-inch RoboCop figure.
00:26First released in 2013, periodically reissued, this impressive figure captures the terrifying
00:32presence of the omni-consumer product enforcement droid from the original 1987 RoboCop film.
00:38While I'm sure Kenny wouldn't be thrilled to see Ed 209 resurface again, in celebration
00:43though of the 39th anniversary of the RoboCop 80s film, NECA is reissuing this guy.
00:48In fact, actually, he's available right now over on their site for $89, I believe, and
00:52$0.99. I say that granted though, that's US dollars. I know as a Canadian collector,
00:57I'm going to be paying a little bit more. Although, now already having Ed 209 in my collection,
01:02I can't think though there's going to be much that's different between this one and the reissue.
01:06But I thought though, as celebrating of not only the 39th anniversary, but also the fact
01:11that NECA has decided to reissue this guy, I would go back and look at Ed 209 again.
01:15I think for the most part, he has fared well. Although I've had some issues though with his
01:19batteries, we're going to talk more about that in a moment. In the meantime though,
01:22let's take the tape measure. Whoa! Let's take the tape measure and figure out how big Ed 209
01:27actually is. First, in his height, you're looking at him being about 8 inches, working out to be
01:32roughly a figure that's 21 centimeters tall. Then from one end of its Gatling gun to its other,
01:38Ed 209 is about 8 inches, working then again out to be about 20 centimeters wide. Now a Battle
01:44Damage Murphy would be the ideal way of displaying along with Ed 209. So for that, I'm going to bring
01:48in
01:48the Battle Damage Robocop that came included with his chair. I don't really think that he needs a
01:53chair. Ed 209 really has a hard time sitting down anyway, as we saw how he fared well with the
01:57stairs. As something I hadn't had the chance to do before, because of course I never had the Haya
02:01Toys release at that time, here's also what Ed 209 looks like with the release we got from Haya.
02:06Back to the batteries though, Ed 209 in the time that I've had him inside the box,
02:10the batteries have drained. So I thought, obviously I would only really need to pick up
02:16replacements and this guy actually needs three LR44 batteries. Easier said than done. Well,
02:22I went to Amazon and I got myself an entire tray of these. I don't really need more than really
02:27three of these, but at least I've got myself some extras. Unfortunately though, trying to replace
02:31them on Ed 209 first was difficult just to remove the battery plate. And even then doing that,
02:36the batteries didn't seem like they actually worked. I'm just going to actually move his legs out of the
02:41way so you guys can see. The battery compartment, I've taken, by the way, the liberty of already
02:45unscrewing the screw. The battery compartment is just right here. We slide that off. And inside,
02:50by the way, just to show you, it does say LR44. You see that? Good. So we already know the
02:56size
02:57should really work. Yet though, putting the batteries in, I put one. We're not going to spend the whole
03:04review. Obviously put me putting in batteries, putting in though the three, putting in the three.
03:11Let's make sure, of course, I've got everything lined up. You know what? I'll tilt this slightly
03:14to the side. That'll make things a lot easier to put the batteries in. Well, you'll always really
03:18know when you put the third battery in that it's tight. It's a tight fit because obviously they have
03:23to expand or you have to be able to fit snugly in there in order to conduct then the electricity
03:28or the power in between the batteries. Unfortunately though, these batteries are loose. Now, I don't
03:34know though, if maybe Amazon mislabeled these, that they're not actually LR44. They could in fact be
03:39LR43, which I think have the same diameter, but they're not as thick. That's my guess, at least.
03:46A workaround to that is that you can actually take yourself a folded up piece of aluminum foil. I
03:50wouldn't really recommend having this always displayed with aluminum foil, also stuck in its gullet like
03:55this, but it will work at least to give them sound effects. The batteries also will hold. I think
04:00generally, okay, we'll just kind of fold down the aluminum foil just a little bit here. Should we
04:04maybe also put the battery cover on here? Let's maybe do that too. The last thing, again, I really
04:09would want to have happen is I go to activate the batteries and all the batteries then pop out.
04:14Can we actually get these in here? This is so makeshift. This isn't really the way that you're
04:18supposed to have this displayed, but there is an activation button here on the side and ED209 will cycle
04:24then through several sound effects and phrases. Pressing the button as promised here on the side,
04:30let's hope the batteries actually work. No, no, in fact, they don't. Let's just want to make sure
04:35I've got the aluminum foil all the way in there. This could, again, have so easily even fixed had
04:41I had the proper batteries, but let's just make sure I've got this going. No, no, I'm just going to
04:46take, do I even have the batteries facing the right way? Let's just make sure that they're first
04:50facing the right way. I actually think I did have the batteries facing the wrong way. Okay,
04:55so now that we've got some aluminum foil as our makeshift stand-in, pressing the button here on the
04:59side. And again, we can also press the button here. You'd have to just to pretend that Kenny here is
05:15in
05:15the front being obliterated. Nobody, I think at one point they say, nobody touch him. I mean,
05:23like by now, Kenny's just ground beef. Press it again.
05:37That would near the end of the movie where Murphy is going to approach the old man at OCP.
05:43And of course, then Robocop again uses the Cobra assault rifle. There's a few more sound effects
05:48we can go through. And I think there's one more. While having some struggle, unfortunately changing
06:05the batteries and having relying on the cruelest way of doing this, I'm just using a piece again,
06:10aluminum foil. The sound effects, I will say to its credit, are actually clear and quite loudly.
06:15It's not even a case either that it takes, it actually sounds like they've taken the clips
06:18directly from the film itself. Let's just, I'm going to remove the aluminum foil because
06:23obviously the batteries are just going to roll around on me anyways. Let's just move those off
06:27to the side. But I might reach out maybe to Amazon, just explain the situation to them and say,
06:32like, I think you guys have mis-packaged the label because they're clearly not LR44s. Even though
06:38again, really on the top, it says, it does say LR44s. I think maybe perhaps they're LR43s.
06:45With batteries aside, now let's actually get a closer look at ED-209. Now, I, again, don't think
06:50that there's anything that's going to be different between this one and the reissue that NECA has
06:53already dropped on their site. You can also, of course, buy the original one. I think there's
06:58actually been several times this guy has been released. Maybe I had not grabbed the first one.
07:02I had grabbed maybe the first ED-209, sold it for reasons unknown. Then I ended up going and buying
07:07the
07:07one again that we are looking at here that I had reviewed before. ED-209, though, is pretty, again,
07:13accurate to the movie itself, right down to the fact that you can actually see there's some nice
07:17wires that they've put onto the side of this. These wires are actually, in fact, separate from
07:22the rest of the arm. So when it really then comes to moving around the arm, you can actually do
07:26that
07:26quite easily without any risks or perhaps maybe ripping those wires. They don't seem like they're
07:32going to be getting in the way. Of course, the face does look good for ED-209. I think at
07:35one point,
07:36though, the front area here, which you could probably look at and consider to be a mouth,
07:39I think at one point was maybe flipped around the other way. But they decided, though, to have
07:43the frown upside down. And I think it works a whole lot better for ED. Of course, he does have
07:48the
07:48texturing there on the top of his head. If you want to really call it his head, he has the
07:51Gatlin gun
07:52turrets here on the side. Those do rotate. We're going to talk about more of the articulation here in
07:56a second. And while this one only has the turrets, this one actually benefits from having the rocket,
08:00the missiles, and these missiles slide up. They don't slide up much, though, and nor can you actually go in
08:06there and remove those missiles. But the fact that this actually does have a section that swings out
08:10is, again, a really nice touch. The thing about it, though, is that if you already have this ED-209,
08:15there's probably very little reason you have to probably now get the reissue. I still really feel
08:20like when it comes to maybe doing another ED-209, NECA could go the routes of maybe what Haya did.
08:26Haya's, at one point, did release a regular ED-209, and then they put out a damaged version of him
08:30as
08:30well that has the damaged turrets. Of course, there's also, again, some damaged paint that you can see
08:35maybe on the side of ED-209. I feel really like NECA should go that route. I mean, it's fine
08:40and good
08:41to release a reissue of this guy, but I also feel like, too, release a battle damage version. Maybe
08:45that one could detach the top half from his bottom half so that you could have just, like, the legs
08:51left behind. Maybe having then a swappable turret that, again, you could pop out and replace with
08:55a battle damage version of that. I think those could all be things that NECA really hasn't yet
08:59entertained. They seem to be fine just to release the reuse of the original figure that we're
09:03looking at here. When it comes to, certainly, though, the rest of the details on the figure,
09:07really nice use, though, of silver. I like, generally, like the color that they use also
09:11for ED-209, not just in the movie, but also the figure itself. There is kind of a metallic sheen
09:16to
09:16it that you can probably pick up as the light's bouncing off of it. Of course, it does have the
09:21pistons here on the side. Now, the pistons here don't serve much purpose, but actually, there is some
09:26possibility to the legs. We can talk more about that in a moment. The one only other issue I have
09:30with ED, other than really having a struggle to change the batteries, is also, as well, the hydraulics
09:35that he has for his legs. I have seen people have this issue, and I think my original ED-209
09:41also had
09:41this issue as well. These clasps that essentially hold the side of the leg, I'm guessing the way the
09:47character was designed in the movie, I feel like these should have come out. These should have maybe
09:52had, like, a post right through here where you could actually have moved these out. Why I say that,
09:57though, is because the piston, the hydraulics, I should say, allow the legs to swing out, and
10:04swinging out is fine and good. The problem then comes, though, is when you go to push this back,
10:08because these aren't moving anywhere. They're still going to be flushed to the side of the leg
10:12here, and when you go to push this back, see how these little sections right here and right here are
10:18so very close to the rest of the leg that pushing is back in place. I feel like there's always
10:24going to
10:24be a time that these eventually are going to snap off. Now, again, I've seen some people where they
10:28have had their snap off. Luckily, mine are still fine, but I think there's a rest that's definitely
10:33there. It's a nice little additional labeling, and of course, you can also see some details there on
10:37the side of the leg. And again, it's a really nice recreation of ED-209 from the film. It's just,
10:42it's such a shame, really, that the figure does have, well, first of all, battery compartments. I don't mind
10:47so much that. I feel like, if anything, probably the battery compartment would have made better sense to
10:51maybe be up here or here on the back, instead of having trying to move the legs around just to
10:55get
10:55to battery compartment. And then, of course, you've got to find the right screwdriver. Then, unlike I
10:59did, you had to find, of course, the proper batteries, too. But overall, let's look at the
11:04articulation for ED-209. Now, while not having really this part of his body being able to move up and
11:09down,
11:09which is a bit of a disappointment, the main turrets can rotate back and forth. Not much, though.
11:16These sides can also hinge up, too. This, actually, side, I find hinges a lot easier than this side
11:21here. This one's a lot tighter. And then, you can also move the turrets up and down, too. So,
11:26if, with this now being out of the way, you can rotate the turret all the way around.
11:31Just make sure, of course, you clear the legs. And also, this part swivels. There is a hinge
11:36right here. So, you can also bend the elbow, if you really want to, again, call it an elbow or
11:40not.
11:41So, that's good to see. We already looked at the fact that the legs do hinge out. So, you can
11:45rotate
11:46those forward and back. So, if you want to have, like, a wider stance for ED-209, you can pull
11:49that
11:49off, too. Obviously, the legs are going to move forward and back. So, if it wants to have a tantrum
11:53when it gets to the bottom of the stairs, it can do that. Again, if you want to really consider
11:57this
11:57to be articulation, yes, again, the hydraulics do allow the legs to move forward and back. And you do
12:03have posibility, but you don't really have a whole lot here in the feet. Of course, there's what the
12:07bottom of the feet look like. Again, I would love that maybe they could do a
12:11version 2 ED-209 with maybe a removable top turret with maybe, again, swappable turret arms. And then,
12:17maybe, again, like, if they found a way to add some additional articulation here in the feet,
12:21where you can move these up and down or add some additional possibility there. He lacks a lot here
12:26in the top. I mean, again, moving it forward and back is fine, but I really wish, though, that they
12:30could have found a way to maybe add, like, a ball joint, something where you can move the turret,
12:34the main head of ED-209 up and down, or maybe, again, even rocking it back and forth. Saying that,
12:39though, I'm still glad to have ED-209 as part of my collection. I was really, again, looking forward
12:43to having a look at this guy again, because, again, like, he's been reissued, celebrating,
12:47what, 39th anniversary of Robocop, the original 80s film. So he's available right now on NECA's site,
12:53so I thought it would be a good time to maybe go back and look at this guy again. I
12:56really wasn't,
12:57though, expecting to have the hardships of trying to buy the proper batteries. I mean, LR-44,
13:02it's there on the bottom of the battery lid, and yet I bought LR-44, assuming it was going to
13:07be
13:07fine. Unfortunately, though, luckily, though, for me, I had, like, a makeshift, just a piece of,
13:12like, aluminum foil I could grab from the kitchen. Obviously, again, scaling this guy, he scales
13:17really well with the original NECA Murphy, the figure that we've already gotten. And again, it's
13:21just to show you guys what he looks like compared to the slightly smaller release that we got from
13:24Hyatt Toys. If you're a big fan of, you know, if you're a big fan of ED-209 and you
13:29love the classic
13:29RoboCop film, and you missed your chance getting ED-209 that first time around, just know, again,
13:35like, he's been reissued. He's available right now on NECA's site. $89, I think it was $89.99,
13:39not a bad price at all, if you want to have a foil for RoboCop. Now, it's not to say
13:45that you have to
13:45go directly to NECA in order to buy ED-209. He is widely available in other online sites as well.
13:51Expect about a $89 to $100 price point. I think Big Bad Toys Store actually has this guy currently
13:56listed as $102.99. But for the size of what this figure is, for the posability that he does
14:02possess, he could have always had more. But he has a good amount of it for the kind of robot
14:07that he
14:07is. And for the fact that he also does have sound effects. Once, of course, you get those sound
14:11effects to work, the sound effects are nice and clear, they have good bass to them, and they sound
14:15like they were pulled directly from the film. Let me know, guys, what you think of the, well, I wouldn't
14:20want to say it's a reissue of ED-209. It's clearly just the original ED-209. But have you guys
14:25had the
14:25chance to pick up the original one? Or do you have plans now to get the reissue now that NECA
