00:00We were talking a little bit about the SEC earlier, Bill.
00:02I mean, we're in like the post Nick Saban SEC era right now.
00:08Does that feel like, is there, is it lost some of the steam we think because of no Nick Saban
00:14who, you know, is arguably the greatest or most successful, whatever you want to say, college football coach of all
00:19time?
00:20I would say yes.
00:21I mean, when I covered plenty of SEC media days with Nick Saban and I, and I always made the
00:26comment that when he talked, it was typically Wednesday, Nick Saban would come on.
00:31They wouldn't, they wouldn't bring Nick Saban out there on Monday or Tuesday.
00:35They would bring it.
00:35It's a four day event.
00:36You bring them out on Wednesday.
00:38It felt like a little bit of Alabama football and a little bit of like the state of the union
00:42of college football.
00:43That's how much pull he had at the time.
00:46I mean, I remember walking into that, the Winfrey hotel and trying to get in the hotel and it was
00:51like eight in the morning and there are just, I'm not exaggerating, at least a hundred Alabama fans outside the
00:58doors.
00:58You know, some of them wearing the elephant hats and stuff, waiting just to catch a glimpse at Nick Saban
01:04and they would scream, you know, 17 or 18.
01:07They wanted that next national title.
01:08It was a wild scene.
01:10And at big 10 media day, it's never been quite like that.
01:13They do make it a fan experience there.
01:15I'm not saying like urban Meyer or Brian day or, or Kurt Cignetti or the, any of those coaches don't
01:21have the same presence, but it was a little bit of a different feel with Nick Saban.
01:25Do you feel kind of that centralized figure being done with college football?
01:29Cause you look at the big 10, everyone's kind of sharing a piece of the pie as far as national
01:32championships.
01:33Do you feel like that head coach, like a Nick Saban, who they're going out, they're winning five national championships
01:38in a decade.
01:39Do you think that's done where that's like, you're just not going to see guy have that dominance anymore.
01:43Or just with the transfer portal, NIL, like I don't, I'll see that happen.
01:47I'll see Nick Saban coming around, I guess, for the rest of college football.
01:50Well, maybe it feels a little bit like the nineties then, you know, where not to go back to all
01:54the way back to in time.
01:56But at that time you had Bobby Bowden, you had Steve Spurrier, you had Tom Osborne.
02:00I mean, the, the, the larger than life personalities of that era, it was still spread out.
02:06I mean, Nebraska won three, you know, Bobby Bowden won, I think two or three.
02:12Right.
02:12And Spurrier won the one at Florida, but I kind of feel like that's the, the playing field we have
02:19now.
02:19Now Kirby's one, two and Dabo's one, two Kirby, however, his media presence is one of like a former defensive
02:28coordinator that, that is more out of obligation than want to, if that makes sense.
02:33Like he, he's not bad and he's not rude to reporters or anything like that, but there's definitely a feel
02:38of, man, I got to go do this now.
02:40And, uh, he just wants to get it done and get back to film Ryan day, uh, Steve Sarkeesian, Marcus
02:46Freeman.
02:47Those are all coaches that are, you know, in that neighborhood, but you're dealing with a sport where there aren't
02:51a lot of active coaches with national titles.
02:55So next week at big 10 media day, I think it'll be interesting to see what's the difference between Ryan
03:00day and, uh, you know, Kurt Cignetti, you know, those are two different personalities as well, both very successful coaches,
03:06but very different personalities, especially when it comes to the media.
