00:01The question on many people's lips at the moment is just when will the rain return?
00:05Well the short answer is not for a while yet.
00:08And this graphic behind me just emphasizes how dry July has been so far.
00:12So away from northern and western Scotland where we've seen average or slightly above
00:16average amounts of rainfalls this month, many parts of the UK have actually seen less than
00:2110% of the average rainfall for the whole of the month in the first kind of 18 days
00:26or so.
00:26In actual fact, many parts of England and Wales have seen barely a drop of rain through
00:30this month and some places haven't even seen any rain since late June.
00:34So it's been exceptionally dry and that's obviously had an impact on farming and the ground.
00:38It's exceptionally dry at the moment and plants are struggling to survive.
00:42Unfortunately, there's not much change in the forecast through the week ahead.
00:45High pressure continues to dominate, centre to the west of the UK in the Atlantic.
00:49Winds moving clockwise around an area of high pressure.
00:52So a northerly breeze at times, but very little in the way of weather fronts.
00:56So not much in the way of rain, just the odd light shower for some northern, eastern parts
01:00at times.
01:00There are some signs towards next weekend that we might see a bit more aware of widespread
01:05showers, particularly in the north of the UK.
01:07But in the south where we desperately need the rain, certainly no strong signals at this
01:11stage for anything significant.
01:13But back to Sunday evening.
01:15It's a fine, sunny and warm end of the day for many parts of England and Wales and also
01:18Northern Ireland.
01:19But you'll notice across the north of Scotland, we have got that northerly breeze, just bringing
01:22in some thicker clouds as we go through the course of tonight.
01:24So there will be a tendency for cloud amounts to thicken, some bits and pieces of rain and
01:30drizzle arriving.
01:30So turning quite damp, some mist and murk developing over the high ground and possibly some showery rain,
01:35just working its way southwards through the North Sea as well.
01:37So into northeast England, parts of Yorkshire and the wash could turn a little bit damp by
01:41the end of the night.
01:42But many places will stay dry and where skies stay clear, particularly across the Midlands
01:46and East Anglia in the countryside, it will actually turn into quite a chilly night.
01:50So a much more comfortable night for sleeping for all of us.
01:53Temperatures in the towns and the cities, perhaps staying in double figures.
01:56But in the countryside where we could see lows of around five or six degrees.
02:00So it will be a fairly fresh start to the day for some of us on Monday morning,
02:03but it won't take long for temperatures to rise in that strong sunshine.
02:07Having said that, it will be a much cloudier day compared to today, particularly for more
02:11eastern parts of Scotland, northeast England, East Anglia and the southeast.
02:15And the cloud here will be thick enough just to give possibly one or two very isolated light
02:18showers, mainly through the morning.
02:20A cloudier day to come across Northern Ireland as well compared to on Sunday.
02:24The best of the sunshine developing across the heart of Scotland, Wales, Western England
02:28and especially the southwest where once again, temperatures may well climb into the
02:32mid-twenties for some of us by the afternoon and winds will remain fairly light.
02:36So it will feel very warm in the sunshine, but obviously quite a bit cooler where we hold
02:40on to the thicker cloud.
02:41Temperatures no better than 19 or 20 perhaps in some coastal areas.
02:46Any showers will tend to fade away as we go through Monday evening, with the exception
02:50being northern parts of Scotland where we might see more and aware of longer spells of light
02:55rain and drizzle pushing into the highlands, the islands and perhaps Shetland and Orkney
02:59as we go towards Tuesday morning.
03:01Most places though, elsewhere across the UK, remaining dry and largely clear.
03:05And once again, temperatures holding up in double figures, perhaps the low to mid-teens
03:09in some of our towns and cities, but a good deal fresher than this in the countryside.
03:14So not too bad for sleeping, certainly quite a bit cooler compared to of late.
03:18Now Tuesday once again promises to be a fine day for the vast majority.
03:22Any morning mist and fog patches quickly clearing and then another dry and largely sunny day.
03:27Sunnier and probably warmer for some eastern areas of the UK compared to on Monday.
03:31Certainly more in a way of sunshine I think anyway.
03:33For northern Scotland though, quite breezy, particularly for Shetland and Orkney.
03:37And still the chance of just one or two light showers or patches of light rain and drizzle at times.
03:43Temperatures largely speaking similar to recent days.
03:47So feeling very warm by the afternoon in the best of sunshine.
03:50Highs of maybe 25 to 27 in the highest spots in the south of the UK.
03:55But temperatures more comfortable, the low 20s generally in the north.
03:59So generally a fine settled picture as we go through the week ahead, as I say.
