00:00I want to ask you about Sam Darnold here.
00:03How did that story evolve into this, Phil?
00:06I mean, do you believe in that line where organizations are more likely to let down quarterbacks
00:12than quarterbacks are more likely to let down organizations?
00:15Do you buy that because this is his fifth team?
00:19And here's another stat for you, Phil.
00:21He's the winningest quarterback percentage-wise since 2022.
00:27How did he get to that point?
00:31Oh, well, I don't even know how to begin with all this.
00:33You know, first, he's got the talent to be a franchise quarterback.
00:36He always has.
00:37Sometimes I would look at even just go, I wish he was a little more assertive.
00:41You know, when you're the quarterback of a franchise NFL, you've got to be a guy that is connecting
00:48to everybody to make it, to give it a better chance of working.
00:52And, you know, so I wasn't shocked to see what he did out in Seattle.
00:56Not at all.
00:57Let's see, he's big, pretty mobile, strong as hell, good arm, accurate when you give him
01:01enough protection.
01:03Yeah, that's a franchise quarterback.
01:05But, you know, we've got to go in all these, well, you know, he hasn't won before.
01:08Wow.
01:09You mean he didn't win down in Carolina when they had that awful team?
01:12Oh, and he lost with the Jets.
01:13Actually, I thought the Jets were going to the damn Super Bowl.
01:16So, there's a picture of the Carolina Panthers.
01:20There's Sam Darnold standing next to Baker Mayfield on the sideline as the game's going
01:24on.
01:26Who's playing quarterback?
01:28Yeah.
01:30It's P.J. Walker.
01:32He was a guy that kind of beat around the league, but he was a starting quarterback.
01:36Well, those two were on the sideline.
01:38Look what those two have done since they got out of Carolina.
01:42About this, too, you want to add one more?
01:44They were scout team defensive ends on a look team for Carolina.
01:50And those two guys now are going to be talking about $50 million contracts.
01:54Absolutely.
01:56Yeah, hey, listen, they were scout team show guys for the Carolina Panthers.
02:02Mayfield told me, he goes, yeah, Sam Darnold was the right end.
02:05I was the left end.
02:06And I'm like, my God, what was that?
02:08Let me answer it this way.
02:11You had a lot of comments before, and you said some things that are true.
02:15That just shows you, no matter who you are and what talent you have, you cannot overcome
02:20the coaching and the organization.
02:22You have no chance of overcoming it.
02:25And, you know, like Patrick Mahomes, you look at him, the great thing, all the years,
02:29all the talent, all of a sudden, what happened?
02:32Well, what happened is they didn't have the players.
02:35And even though he was making a few good plays and doing that all the time during the season,
02:40but unless you have that group around you to where you show your talent and they get it,
02:46then, oh, yeah, this quarterback can win any game, you know, whatever.
02:49So it's arguments that will never cease.
02:52About the quarterback one.
02:53So let me give you one last one here on Darnold here.
02:57How much of a difficult transition is that for a quarterback, Phil, when you go from a
03:02Clint Kubiak to a Brian Fleury, maybe a different voice, a different way, situational play calling?
03:08I try to explain this to people.
03:10You can have the same playbook, right, Phil, on the desk.
03:13But when you have a different play caller, situational play calling becomes an issue here on how that guy sees
03:20the game versus the other guy.
03:22Is that the main thing you have to work with with your new coordinator?
03:26Yeah, you know, there's a lot there, Dan.
03:30You know, teams could run exactly the same play.
03:34Exact.
03:35You know, every receiver is doing exactly what another team was doing.
03:39But one team makes it really work and the other one can't.
03:42And it's the way you present it, of course, the talent, when to call it.
03:46There are so many things.
03:48And just that, just calling it at the right time is good for three or four or five big plays
03:53for each team on both sides of the ball.
03:56So, you know, that's something I look at a lot.
03:59And, you know, as I watched, I went back and watched some Patrick Mahomes take from last year.
04:04And I just went, oh, my gosh, I watched every one of their games.
04:07But it's hit me even more right now that they were not very good.
04:13And what the hell was he going to do?
04:15He was getting crushed, throwing on the run, throwing it behind his head.
04:19He was doing everything.
04:20And it just kind of puts into perspective once again.
04:23No matter how great you are, the game of football, you need help with your teammates.
04:28And let me, and also maybe even more from the coaches.
