Curse of the Faceless Man is a 1958 independently made American low-budget black-and-white horror film, produced by Robert E. Kent, directed by Edward L. Cahn, that stars Richard Anderson, Elaine Edwards, Adele Mara, and Luis van Rooten. Science fiction writer Jerome Bixby wrote the screenplay. The film was theatrically released in the U.S. on August 14, 1958 by United Artists as a double feature with It! The Terror from Beyond Space.

Storyline:
In the excavation of Pompeii, a stone-encrusted body is found with a bronze medallion bearing a strange Etruscan inscription. Carlo Fiorillo, Italian archaeologist, speculates the robust body may hold some life; medical researcher Paul Mallon scoffs at the idea. But people left alone with the seemingly petrified "faceless man" keep dying of crushed skulls; and Paul's artist fiancée Tina starts having strange visions...

00:00:38THE END
00:01:1079 years after the birth of Christ, the city of Pompeii ceased to exist, destroyed by a mountain of seething
00:01:19hell known as Vesuvius.
00:01:22On a quiet August afternoon, almost 2,000 years ago, the volcano erupted.
00:01:28The earth shook. Day became night. Birds fell dead from the sky. Fish died as the ocean boiled.
00:01:36And the people of Pompeii perished under an avalanche of volcanic ash and stone. Burned, suffocated, crushed.
00:01:48Many strange and mysterious things happened on that day. Some have been explained by archaeologists over the years. Some, perhaps,
00:01:58will never be explained.
00:02:10The startling narrative of the faceless man begins on June 3rd of this year, when a gold jewel box was
00:02:17discovered by a workman of the expedition, unearthing the ancient ruins at Pompeii.
00:02:47The terrified laborer was the first to bring the news of the white, stone-like hands.
00:02:52the land to the headquarters of the expedition. That same day, the body was taken from the earth, where it
00:02:58had been buried for 2,000 years.
00:03:18I bet you could come, Paul. You're solid worried on the telephone. Anything wrong, Carter? Come in, please. Come in.
00:03:27A very strange thing has happened, Paul.
00:03:29Who? A discovery was made yesterday at the Pompeii diggings by one of Dr. Emmanuel's workmen.
00:03:35A body, almost 2,000 years old.
00:03:40A body? Well, it's not a mummy such as we usually find at the Egyptian section of Pompeii. It is
00:03:47a body.
00:03:48And I am not even sure if it is dead.
00:03:52Carlo, what is this nonsense?
00:03:55You think your friend Carlo is losing his mind, then?
00:03:58Well, I would think so, too, if I had not seen the body myself in Dr. Emmanuel's laboratory this morning.
00:04:03Carlo, it's been proven that anything so old cannot support life.
00:04:09And what about the things that we have not proved?
00:04:34When I examined the body, I discovered a certain resiliency of the crust.
00:04:38Crust?
00:04:38A form of outer shell. That's why I want you to work with me, Paul. You are a doctor.
00:04:42You're a specialist in tissue culture, the preservation of the cells.
00:04:46Well, Maria's a medical doctor now. Couldn't she run some tests for you?
00:04:49Well, yes, but she doesn't have your specific training, Paul.
00:04:52Of course, she'll give you all the help you need.
00:04:53What about your assistant, Dr. Ricci?
00:04:55He's on his way now with Maria.
00:05:07Maria, I wish your father had called in someone other than Paul Mallon.
00:05:10My father knows what he is doing, Enrico.
00:05:13My past relation with Paul has nothing to do with it.
00:05:21At the time that the body was discovered, another important find was made.
00:05:26A small chest of jewels.
00:05:29A broach of pure gold, a tiara set with precious stones.
00:05:32Some, uh, gold and pearl pins.
00:05:36And a bronze medallion.
00:05:38Was the chest discovered with the body?
00:05:41In the same pit and by the same workman.
00:05:44In all probability, it was being carried by the man that we discovered.
00:05:48Well, the bronze medallion would seem to have little worth as compared to the other pieces.
00:05:55You are wondering why it was in the chest with the jewels.
00:05:59So are we.
00:06:00If a man is trying to save valuables while escaping from a volcano,
00:06:04he would take something of greater value.
00:06:08No distinguishing marks or designs on it.
00:06:12I saw the medallion, Paul.
00:06:14There was something written on it in ancient Etruscan.
00:06:17Etruscan?
00:06:18Now, wait a minute.
00:06:19The Etruscans died out as a people long before the Roman Empire.
00:06:22No, not entirely.
00:06:24They were absorbed by the Romans.
00:06:26But some of the bloodlines were kept intact.
00:06:29Very strange people.
00:06:31Mysterious.
00:06:32They had strange cults dealing with the supernatural.
00:06:36We have not been able to find out very much about them.
00:06:40Well, save this or not.
00:06:58Come on, sir.
00:06:58Come on, sir.
00:06:59Come on, sir.
00:06:59Come on, sir.
00:06:59Move this then, sir.
00:07:09Can the words on the medallion be translated?
00:07:12Dr. Emanuel is having it done.
00:07:14As soon as the translation is completed,
00:07:15he is turning over the collection of jewels
00:07:17to the museum for display.
00:07:19I think that...
00:07:20Excuse me.
00:07:26Yes?
00:07:27Talk to Dr. Fiorillo.
00:07:32What?
00:07:33What?
00:07:35Impossible.
00:07:37Yes, yes, yes.
00:07:38Come on.
00:07:40There has been an accident.
00:07:43The truck crashed.
00:07:45The driver is dead.
00:08:05How could it have happened?
00:08:07Tony was such a reliable driver.
00:08:11Well, the truck isn't badly damaged.
00:08:19I can't figure out the wound on the back of his head.
00:08:23Nothing in here could have caused it.
00:08:25The shoal on the back of his skull was just wiped away.
00:08:28Senor, we must ask you to touch nothing.
00:08:32I am Maria Fiorillo of the Pompeia Museum.
00:08:36This was one of our trucks.
00:08:38Your pardon, Signorina.
00:08:40We must ask that nothing be touched.
00:08:41There are some things we are not sure of.
00:08:54Must have been thrown here from the crash.
00:08:57Well, at least the body was not destroyed.
00:09:03Dr. Emanuel is coming.
00:09:11I am sorry it takes something like this for me to be able to see you again, Paul.
00:09:17I thought you knew, Maria.
00:09:19I am engaged to be married.
00:09:21I had not heard.
00:09:24What is her name?
00:09:25Tina Enright. She is an artist.
00:09:28Please, let me congratulate you.
00:09:32Terrible thing. Terrible.
00:09:34No one seems to know what happened, Dr. Emanuel.
00:09:37I am glad you are here, Dr. Emanuel.
00:09:40Carlo, I have some news about the medallion.
00:09:44You have it translated?
00:09:46Is the body still intact?
00:09:48Oh, yes. It wasn't damaged.
00:09:49Good, good.
00:09:51Dr. Ricci.
00:09:53You will see that it reaches the museum safely now.
00:09:56Of course.
00:09:57Dr. Emanuel.
00:09:58What about the medallion?
00:10:02We had better discuss it in private.
00:10:18This is the medallion.
00:10:20Undoubtedly, when the workman uncovered it, it was the first time it had seen the light of day in 2
00:10:25,000 years.
00:10:27But the translation, Dr. Emanuel, what was the necessity for so much privacy?
00:10:33Because one man is already dead.
00:10:38And there could be more.
00:10:40But the driver of the truck, now that was an accident, Dr. Emanuel.
00:10:44Maybe we'll know more about that when Dr. Ricci brings the body in here for you to examine.
00:10:49What do you mean, there could be more that could die?
00:10:54This is the translation from the medallion.
00:10:58The house on the fourth hill of Pompeii shall fall, its people shall perish, and whatsoever stands between me and
00:11:07what is mine shall perish.
00:11:08I visit a curse upon them until eternity.
00:11:12The fires of the earth shall consume them.
00:11:15I am the son of Etruscan gods.
00:11:18I will live when the Roman is no more.
00:11:21It is signed Quiltillus Aurelius.
00:11:25Fires from the earth shall consume them.
00:11:29Vesuvio was a fire from the earth.
00:11:31Father, are we going to believe that this man's curse actually caused the volcano to erupt and destroy Pompeii?
00:11:38Or that Tony died because of this 2,000-year-old medallion?
00:11:43What we believe is unimportant.
00:11:46The only important things are what we can prove.
00:11:50I think right now our greatest concern is this sentence in the translation.
00:11:57I will live when the Roman is no more.
00:12:01In short, Dr. Mellon, is that thing alive or isn't it?
00:12:27It is the most frightening thing I have ever seen.
00:12:32Dr. Mellon, you may begin your examination.
00:12:35All right, Dr. Mellon.
00:12:41Wait a minute.
00:12:44It's just blood.
00:12:45I think you will find, Dr. Mellon, that the blood is not from the creature, but from the wound that
00:12:50killed the truck driver.
00:12:52Now look, Dr. Emanuel.
00:12:54I don't believe in this curse.
00:12:55And I don't believe that this thing killed Tony.
00:12:58And I don't believe that this thing is alive.
00:13:00I pray that you're right, Dr. Mellon.
00:13:10Good evening, darling.
00:13:14Sorry to be late.
00:13:16What time is it?
00:13:188.30.
00:13:19Oh.
00:13:21Oh, I've been working steadily and didn't realize.
00:13:23Dr. Fiorillo asked me to come up to the Pompeii Museum this afternoon.
00:13:27I've been there ever since.
00:13:28Museum?
00:13:28Yes, he wanted me to examine a body they found at the site of the diggings.
00:13:32When was this body found?
00:13:33Yesterday.
00:13:36Well, what's this?
00:13:42Did you paint this?
00:13:44It was a dream I had last night, Paul.
00:13:47It, it, it felt so strong I could feel the presence of it in my room.
00:13:53This morning it's almost as if I were being forced to paint it, to bring it to life.
00:13:58Well, what did you dream, Tina?
00:14:02I, I, I saw the excavation and the workman finding the body.
00:14:07First the hand, white, dead, and yet not dead.
00:14:13Its hands were bound as if it were being held in slavery.
00:14:16Anything else?
00:14:18Well, later it was, it, it was in a, a box, a crate on a truck.
00:14:23And it got out, killed the driver.
00:14:30You dreamt all that?
00:14:32It was trying to get to me, Paul.
00:14:34It was the most terrible nightmare I've ever had.
00:14:36Impossible.
00:14:37I examined that body myself.
00:14:38Of course, I can only analyze the outer crust around it.
00:14:41The rock dust, chemicals, the earth.
00:14:46Nothing can convince me that that thing is living.
00:14:49Living?
00:14:52A truck driver was killed today.
00:14:55Oh, no.
00:14:55No, it was only an accident.
00:14:56That's all it was.
00:14:57It was an odd coincidence.
00:14:58That's all there was to it.
00:14:59Well, where is the body now?
00:15:00It's in the room, the main room at the museum.
00:15:02The police are coming up there tonight to ask us for some questions.
00:15:05I have to go back.
00:15:06Paul, I want to go with you.
00:15:07Just wait.
00:15:08No, I, I must see it, Paul.
00:15:10Please take me, please.
00:15:12Tina, why don't we get married tomorrow?
00:15:14Go back to New York and forget this whole thing.
00:15:16No, Paul, I, I, I have my studies and you have your work.
00:15:20What would we be running away from?
00:15:21A, a bad dream?
00:15:23An impossibility?
00:15:26Isn't it better to stay here and prove it's an impossibility?
00:15:32I'll be dressed in a few minutes, Paul.
00:15:39Dr. Paul Mallon began to feel a deep concern for his fiancee.
00:15:43For he was wondering now if the faceless apparition she had painted was an impossibility.
00:16:01So, Dr. Fiorello, this is the thing you dug up.
00:16:04You see, it's human.
00:16:05It was once, Inspector, as human as you or I.
00:16:08I'm afraid my superiors would think I have grown too old for my job if I were to list this
00:16:12as a suspect.
00:16:14Suspect?
00:16:15We have definitely proved that your driver did not die in an accident.
00:16:19He was murdered.
00:16:21But who would want to kill Tony?
00:16:24What reason would they have?
00:16:26That's why we are here ourselves tonight.
00:16:28If you have any information to give us, please tell us now.
00:16:31Oh, uh, Dr. Mallon, Inspector Rinaldi.
00:16:34How do you do, Inspector Rinaldi?
00:16:36Tina, uh, Tina.
00:16:39Oh, I'm sorry.
00:16:41Uh, Miss Enright.
00:16:42Dr. Maria Fiorello.
00:16:44My father, Dr. Fiorello.
00:16:46Dr. Ricci.
00:16:48Inspector Rinaldi.
00:16:49You, you are Paul's fiancee.
00:16:52We'll be married in September.
00:16:54Paul has told me about you.
00:16:56You are very beautiful.
00:16:58Well, thank you.
00:17:00Please, I'm sorry.
00:17:01With a killer loose, I do not like to waste time.
00:17:04Oh, uh, the police have discovered that Tony was murdered.
00:17:16Perhaps you can give me some information.
00:17:19Uh, Inspector, I made a chemical analysis this morning.
00:17:23Tony's blood was on his hand.
00:17:25What would you have me believe, Dr. Mallon?
00:17:27You ask me for information, that's all I know.
00:17:31So...
00:17:33The hand of the thing could have brushed against the driver
00:17:36after the truck had crashed?
00:17:39No.
00:17:40No, I believe the killer is a great deal younger than 2,000 years.
00:17:46Dr. Fiorello, these valuable jewels found by the body...
00:17:52Could someone be after them?
00:17:54They were in Dr. Emmanuel's possession at the time.
00:17:56The only one who knew about them was the workmen
00:17:58who discovered them in our cells.
00:18:00The workmen.
00:18:01That gives us motivation and a starting point.
00:18:06Policemen have to be practical about crime.
00:18:09We do not get paid for following ghosts and...
00:18:12or the walking dead.
00:18:14Now, we will find your murder, but until we do,
00:18:16I must ask you to keep the museum closed to the park.
00:18:19Closed proposed to? Why?
00:18:21The motivation may still be here.
00:18:25Good night.
00:18:27Inspector.
00:18:35I think you'd all better listen to what Tina has to say.
00:18:41Shall we go into my office?
00:18:49I felt very strange, of course.
00:18:53It was almost like trying to paint a picture
00:18:57from one's own imagination.
00:18:59But I didn't attach any significance to the painting until...
00:19:03Pol told me what had happened.
00:19:06I thought it would be better not to tell the police about this.
00:19:10You were wise.
00:19:12If you had shown such knowledge of the murder,
00:19:14they would have listed you as one of the suspects.
00:19:18Dr. Fiorillo,
00:19:20would you mind if I came here tomorrow
00:19:22to make some sketches of the body?
00:19:25But why, Tina?
00:19:27My painting isn't finished.
00:19:29And now we're the actual subject in the next room.
00:19:32No, no, please, Miss Enright.
00:19:34Do not ask.
00:19:35We do not know what that thing is.
00:19:38If Paul hasn't completed his work,
00:19:39we were unable to penetrate the outer shell.
00:19:42Now, when we do know,
00:19:43you can come and make your sketches.
00:19:45Please, not now.
00:19:48My father and I have quarters of the museum.
00:19:50And I am not even sure I like that now.
00:19:55All right.
00:19:57Thanks anyhow.
00:19:58I'll wait.
00:19:59We'll be making some further examinations in the morning.
00:20:02Won't be much longer.
00:20:04Come on, Tina.
00:20:04I'll show you home.
00:20:10Dr. Fiorillo was puzzled and worried
00:20:12over what was obviously more than just a coincidence.
00:20:17For Tina Enright, the strange dreams persisted,
00:20:21as though the stone-like man lying in the museum
00:20:24had forced her to think of him,
00:20:26had impressed himself so indelibly on her mind
00:20:29that she had to go to him
00:20:31so that his portrait might be finished.
00:20:49What?

00:24:44She's in shock.
00:24:45The watchman?
00:24:46Dead.
00:24:48What could have happened here, Maria?
00:24:50What could have happened?
00:24:51Perhaps Tina could tell us that when she's able to.
00:24:55Father, look.
00:24:56The brooch for the quintila's chest.
00:24:59But how could she be wearing it?
00:25:01Perhaps she took it unconsciously.
00:25:03Anything is possible in deep shock.
00:25:05I'm going to call Paul.
00:25:06Maria.
00:25:08Two men have died today.
00:25:10The inscription on the medallion said,
00:25:13Whosoever stands between me and what is mine shall perish.
00:25:17Father, we still have no proof that this thing is responsible.
00:25:22Perhaps the inspector is right.
00:25:25Perhaps the same thieves are still trying to get the jewels.
00:25:28Perhaps.
00:25:29Perhaps.
00:25:31Who will die next?
00:25:34I'm going to telephone Paul.
00:25:38Dr. Fiorello studied the ancient books of his library for hours and finally found what he wanted.
00:25:44A picture of Roman women at the time that the Roman Empire flourished.
00:25:49For Tina Enright, time had ceased to exist as she lay suspended in the vague twilight between the past and
00:25:57the present.
00:25:58Maria, isn't there anything you can do?
00:26:01No.
00:26:03Shock is like a heavy door in the mine, Paul.
00:26:06Sometimes it can be opened with the same keys that caused it to calls.
00:26:10But I don't know what put her into it.
00:26:13I thought when the police tried to question her why she'd snap out of it, she didn't even hear them.
00:26:18Paul.
00:26:18Maria.
00:26:22Look at this.
00:26:24Notice the brooches on the women.
00:26:27Here, use this.
00:26:32That is exactly where the brooch was pinned on Tina.
00:26:35What does this have to do with what's happened?
00:26:37I'm not sure, Paul.
00:26:40Perhaps this brooch will be the key that will open that heavy door.
00:26:45Carlo, are you trying to say that that monster had something to do with this?
00:26:48I know, Paul.
00:26:49I know.
00:26:50To most people, the past is something that happened a long time ago and is gone forever.
00:26:54But to a curator of a museum, such as myself, he lives in the past.
00:26:58It's all around him, present, here, now.
00:27:01Now, where is the dividing line between yesterday and today, between the past and the present, even between life and
00:27:06death?
00:27:07Carlo, two men have died.
00:27:10And each time the body of that thing was lying nearby.
00:27:12Now, if it were alive, if it could move, why did it stop?
00:27:17Why didn't it keep going?
00:27:19We can only hope that this brooch will give us the answer to that, too.
00:27:23Now, first, I want you to take Tina back to her apartment.
00:27:27Why?
00:27:27I don't think that she should be anywhere near Quintilus.
00:27:31Now, please do as I say.
00:27:32Come, Paul.
00:27:33I will help you.
00:27:34I will stay here.
00:27:35There are still some books I want to go through.
00:27:53Maria, do you think it's safe to leave her here?
00:27:56I'm hoping she will sleep.
00:27:57It might do some good.
00:28:04If she's not better by morning, I suggest she be taken to a hospital.
00:28:08Do you think she might have a concussion?
00:28:11I almost wish it were.
00:28:15Sometimes it is better to deal with a concussion than it is with a mental state.
00:28:20Mental state?
00:28:22She was perfectly all right until they found that creature.
00:28:27Then you are beginning to think, as my father does,
00:28:30that there's something supernatural about Tina's dreams.
00:28:33Well, you'd like to believe that she's probably insane.
00:28:36Paul!
00:28:38I'm sorry, Maria.
00:28:41I shouldn't have said that.
00:28:42It's just that I'm...
00:28:43I'm concerned about Tina.
00:28:47Paul.
00:28:49I wanted you once very much.
00:28:52But when I lost you, I...
00:28:54I was able to rationalize.
00:28:57My life was not disrupted.
00:29:01Maybe it has been bad for me seeing you again and...
00:29:04seeing how much you love Tina.
00:29:08But I can still rationalize.
00:29:11Believe me, I want Tina to get well.
00:29:17Father thinks the brooch is the answer to a lot of things.
00:29:20Let us find out.
00:29:24All right.
00:29:25An ancient brooch.
00:29:27Yet the mystery of it had survived the ages...
00:29:30to make itself felt again in the presence of Tina Enright.
00:29:35Now, perhaps, a phase of the mystery might be solved.
00:29:42Close the door.
00:29:44And stay near to it.
00:29:45We may want to get out quickly.
00:29:48We may want to get out of the mystery.
00:30:10Now, I will place the brooch near the body.
00:30:13But the thing has no eyes.
00:30:15How will it see the brooch?
00:30:17Quintelis may have some sort of inner vision.
00:30:21If his mind is intact, it receives images.
00:30:24But it seems almost impossible
00:30:25that an image reflection could penetrate the crust over the head.
00:30:29Mads can see without eyes.
00:30:31The blind have vision, too.
00:30:32Not exactly like ours,
00:30:34but still some kind of sight that guides them instinctively.
00:30:37.
00:30:40.
00:30:54.
00:31:12Now, now we shall see.
00:31:20Keep your eyes on Quintus.
00:31:33It moved.
00:31:35Are you sure I could see?
00:31:40Perhaps it was the shadow that...
00:31:43Look!
00:31:51That's what Tina said.
00:32:03See if Quintus goes for the brooch.
00:32:16Uh-oh.
00:32:35I was right.
00:32:41It's coming towards us.
00:32:44We cannot stop it.
00:32:45Don't let it get near.
00:32:46It could kill you with those fists.
00:32:51Get back!
00:32:52Damn it.
00:32:53Get out of this room.
00:33:15You are hurt, Paul.
00:33:16Don't go.
00:33:17You cannot stop it.
00:33:18It's going after Tina.
00:33:19It's doing what she dreamed.
00:33:20Maria, call the inspector immediately.
00:33:22Tell him to put armed guards at Tina's apartment.
00:33:34Inspector Reinaldo is sending me to Tina's place immediately.
00:33:37Did you tell him what you wanted them there for?
00:33:38Yes, but I don't think he believed it.
00:33:41It's a good thing it is so late there will be nobody around for him to run into.
00:33:44For the first time since the destruction of Pompeii, Quintillus Aurelius was a free man.
00:33:52The dreams in the mind of Tina Enright returned, baffling dreams that she could not understand.
00:33:59Yet the dreams were very real, for she could see the approach of the man of stone, could
00:34:05feel his terrifying presence as he neared the apartment in which she slept.
00:34:22You mean we're actually to watch for the stone corpse we see the museum?
00:34:26Yes.
00:34:27If what they told me on the phone is true, you better see it before it sees you.
00:34:32These were not the streets and avenues as Quintillus had known them 2,000 years ago.
00:34:36What were once well-traveled thoroughfares were now alleys and the backyards of homes.
00:34:44But the stone man's strange memory and instinct guided him surely toward Tina Enright.
00:34:58We are still waiting for your fantastic dead man to make his appearance.
00:35:01It's good that nothing's happened.
00:35:03Nothing except we're losing sleep.
00:35:05Well, maybe we should wait from Tina's apartment.
00:35:07No.
00:35:08I would be afraid for Tina if something should happen.
00:35:10She should be brought out of the shop carefully.
00:35:27What's up, er?
00:35:39You were all about us.
00:35:42Okay, Lord.
00:36:01Inspector, would you know the location of an old area once known as the Fourth Hill of Pompeii?
00:36:06Of course. You are standing on it.
00:36:12Why do you ask?
00:36:14I just wanted to make sure.
00:36:50Help!
00:36:56Help!
00:36:57No!
00:37:49Let's go!
00:37:51The basement!
00:37:57The basement!
00:38:05Tina!
00:38:15I'm all right, Paul. I'm all right.
00:38:21He just fell down there.
00:38:24So he died.
00:38:28Collapsed, like he did before.
00:38:30Something's driving that thing. Something motivates it.
00:38:37Paul, I had that dream again.
00:38:41I knew it was coming for me.
00:38:44How could I know, Paul?
00:38:46Why should I know?
00:38:49It isn't possible.
00:38:50It has no face, no eyes, and yet it knows where to go.
00:38:54It can only be instinct.
00:38:55Something that has survived from long ago to guide it.
00:38:58The way the blind are sometimes guided.
00:39:00But still it cannot be alive.
00:39:04Not the way we know life.
00:39:06And it is not dead.
00:39:08Not as we know death.
00:39:21The door is not dead.
00:39:24No, sir.
00:39:26I'm sorry.
00:39:27I'm sorry.
00:39:28I'm sorry, sir.
00:39:30I'm sorry.
00:39:32You're not dead.
00:39:33No, sir.
00:39:33No, sir.
00:39:36I'm sorry.
00:39:38I'm sorry.
00:39:44the police have gone already they left about 10 minutes ago one more of these
00:39:47killings and they will hold me criminally responsible the fools here we are so close
00:39:52to solving the mystery of life and death and they worry about their precious laws
00:39:56the body has been returned here it's in the laboratory and the girl miss enright is waiting
00:40:01maria and enrico went to rome they will be back with the machinery later today we are making progress
00:40:08tell me how do you think this information will affect miss enright we shall see we shall see
00:40:17we know now that some sort of force gives life to the creature and that suddenly seemingly without
00:40:24reason the body collapses and becomes suspended somewhere between life and death the reaction
00:40:31may be a tangible one some chemical reaction that takes place inside that outer crust
00:40:37dr mellon
00:40:44these old books deal with alchemy as you know the word alchemy is generally explained as egyptian art
00:40:52the black arts of the land of chem is the ancient world for egypt read these books before you make
00:41:00your chemical test today well doctor after what's happened i'm almost willing to believe anything even
00:41:07the black arts of egypt bear in mind the body was discovered in the ruins of the temple of isis
00:41:14the egyptian section of pompeii
00:41:18i'll remember tina ever since quintilis was found dr emmanuel has searched everything books old papers
00:41:27scrolls parchments he's found something that i think may be very disturbing to you
00:41:34i don't think anything can be more disturbing than what's already happened i think it can now please tell us
00:41:42exactly what happened when you came to make the sketches of quintilis
00:41:48well there there isn't much that i know
00:41:53all i can remember is
00:41:57suddenly the body rising getting off the dais coming toward me
00:42:11just just before i fainted i saw him bend over me
00:42:18pin something on my jacket
00:42:24what he pinned on you was a brooch from his jewel box
00:42:29miss henright it was a custom of the etruscan civilization for a man to pin the jewel over the
00:42:36heart of the woman he loved what are you trying to say thousands of years separate me from that thing
00:42:44leave her alone doctor i think she's had enough no he's right i must know
00:42:50i must know if you don't get that the truth this might affect her mind permanently
00:42:56he's right paul i've got to know
00:43:00all right what do you want doctor will you come to my home now so that we can talk
00:43:10and i will phone you here when we're finished
00:43:16paul it's better not to worry about her now here
00:43:21take these books and study them it will occupy your mind
00:43:31it's better not to worry about her
00:43:31if you don't mind we'll make one stop on the way if you wish have you ever been to a
00:43:36bay near the beach
00:43:37called the cove of the blind fisherman no i've never heard of it that's where we will stop
00:43:43all right
00:43:45only scholars of ancient history had ever heard of the cove of the blind fisherman
00:43:50the test which dr emmanuel was about to conduct would be a conclusive one for tina enright
00:43:57for quintilis the cove of the blind fisherman as it had been for the people of old pompeii
00:44:02was a reality if the ghosts of memory exist in time then the cove of the blind fisherman was alive
00:44:23with ghosts
00:44:24for this had once been the scene of violent death
00:44:29so
00:44:30do you still think you have never been here
00:44:42strange now i don't know let us go toward the water
00:44:53what did you bring me here for try to think see if you know
00:45:05there was a blind fisherman who lived here once
00:45:10he was killed like the others this has not been known as a cove of the blind fishermen since the
00:45:17days
00:45:17of the romans hundreds of them all trying to escape from the volcano
00:45:26they rushed into the sea the water was boiling hot they were all killed
00:45:36terrible
00:45:40i can i can i can almost hear the screams we can go now
00:45:59there's a group of an even know who is now
00:45:59that
00:45:59the
00:45:59the
00:45:59the
00:46:05the
00:46:08the
00:46:30I've isolated one of the substances.
00:46:35It's a form of finilamide.
00:46:37Do you think it could be good for you?
00:46:38Do you think it could be good for me?
00:46:38would be what the Egyptians called ferranti?
00:46:40Yes, and other unknown chemicals included.
00:46:43But phenilamine is the base.
00:46:45An organic base, Carlo.
00:46:49Derived from ammonia by the substitution of atoms of phenyl
00:46:52with equal amounts of hydrogen.
00:46:55Ferranti is believed to have been the vital ingredient
00:46:58in the lost heart of Egyptian embalming.
00:47:01How do they know all about these complex compounds?
00:47:05Civilizations appeared on the face of the earth and then vanished.
00:47:08And their secrets vanished with them.
00:47:12It is quite probable that Quintilis was trapped in the temple of Isis
00:47:15where the high priests keep their vats of embalming solution.
00:47:18Even if the stuff saturated this corpse, it couldn't...
00:47:20But there is another thing.
00:47:22The heat of the volcano, enough heat to boil any liquid in the body.
00:47:26From there on, we can only theorize as to what power could have been created.
00:47:32Hello?
00:47:33Yes, this is Dr. Mallon.
00:47:36Yes.
00:47:37Well, is Tina still there?
00:47:40Oh.
00:47:42Okay, I'll come right over.
00:47:43Right.
00:47:44It was Dr. Emanuel.
00:47:46He wants me to come right over.
00:47:48Is she all right?
00:47:48Yeah, she's fine.
00:47:50She's resting back at her apartment.
00:47:52I'll go on over, and I'll call you later.
00:48:05Once Ms. Enright was in deep hypnosis, I regressed her deep into her subconscious memory.
00:48:11Then allowed her to talk freely.
00:48:14Once I brought her out of hypnosis, she remembered nothing of what you are about to hear.
00:48:19Did she agree to being regressed?
00:48:21Yes.
00:48:22The skies have been dark since yesterday, when Father returned from the Senate in Rome.
00:48:29I feel that something terrible is going to happen.
00:48:33There has been no rain, no clouds.
00:48:38Just the gray light over Pompeii that depresses me.
00:48:42As I look from my window and see Vesuvius, and I remember the curse placed upon my family by the
00:48:53slave Quintillus Aurelius, who calls himself the son of Etruscan gods.
00:49:01I fear the slave and his strength, for he is the most powerful gladiator in all the empire.
00:49:08He has threatened to escape his cell and take me from my house, and those who try to stop him
00:49:14will die.
00:49:14Yet, how can I return his love?
00:49:20I am an aristocrat.
00:49:22He is a slave.
00:49:24And it is not permitted for...
00:49:28There is a rumbling in the ground.
00:49:32The house shakes.
00:49:34The gods are angry, and the sky is black with smoke.
00:49:39I hear shouts in the streets.
00:49:41The crying of children.
00:49:43It is a volcano.
00:49:45It is Vesuvius.
00:49:47I can see other houses on the fourth hill crashing to the ground.
00:49:52And now our house is falling about me.
00:49:55The walls.
00:49:56Oh!
00:49:58That's all of it.
00:50:00Well, doctor, what does it mean?
00:50:03The reason I took such drastic measures with your fiancé, Dr. Mellon, was because of this.
00:50:09This is a photograph of a bust in the Scharner Museum in Berlin.
00:50:15Oh, this is Tina.
00:50:16No.
00:50:17Not Miss Enright.
00:50:19We have the complete history since the girl belonged to a prominent Roman family.
00:50:25The photograph is of a girl named Lucilla Helena.
00:50:31Queen Tildes was a family slave, a powerful man.
00:50:35Lucilla's father trained him to be a gladiator.
00:50:38Obviously, the slave fell very deeply in love with the girl.
00:50:42A love that has lasted through 2,000 years.
00:50:45A love that would not die.
00:50:47Doctor, slaves don't have chests with precious jewels in them.
00:50:54Two of the jewels were of Egyptian design.
00:50:57Queen Tildes could have stolen the chest from the Temple of Isis.
00:51:01Perhaps he was just about to get out of the temple and go to the fourth hill
00:51:06and present the chest to the girl when the volcano struck.
00:51:11Well, Doctor, I don't know what's happened, but Tina Enright is not Lucilla Helena.
00:51:18I'm going to get Tina out of Italy and away from Pompeii just as soon as possible.
00:51:25Separating her from the surroundings might help, Dr. Mellon, but I don't think so.
00:51:29At the risk of sounding ridiculous, I think she would have a better chance if...
00:51:34if the curse were destroyed.
00:51:36The curse?
00:51:38Doctor, you can't destroy that without destroying Quintillus.
00:51:43And science has proven you can't kill something that's already dead.
00:51:47You told me of the chemical discovery you made this afternoon.
00:51:51Surely you can...
00:51:51There's no more time for experimenting, Doctor.
00:51:53I'm going to get Tina out of Italy tonight.
00:51:57Dr. Emanuel knew that Paul Mellon could never run away from what had happened.
00:52:02The only escape was in death.
00:52:05Tina's or that of Quintillus.
00:52:08For Tina, her painting of Quintillus had become an obsession.
00:52:12An obsession that had begun with a tragic love affair 2,000 years ago
00:52:16when a slave in bondage had dared to love a girl of the Roman nobility.
00:52:22Paul, still determined to get Tina out of Italy, arrived at Tina's apartment.
00:52:35Tina?
00:53:03The hand holding the knife could mean but one thing.
00:53:06The release of Quintillus from his bonds of slavery.
00:53:10And the canvas was still wet.
00:53:13The hand and the knife had just been painted.
00:53:17But Paul was too late.
00:53:20Quintillus had already been released from his bonds.
00:53:22So even though he's frozen.
00:53:23Legit...
00:53:41Doctor.
00:53:41Oh yeah, let me try.
00:53:51coloceration!izaçãoazol
00:53:52Let's go.
00:54:32Tina, Tina, get out the door.
00:54:52Let's go.
00:55:34When Paul sees these x-rays, I think that...
00:55:39Who'd leave the door open like that?
00:55:49Hurry.
00:56:02He's more fortunate than Enrico. There's no fracture, just a slight concussion.
00:56:07How long will it be before we can question him?
00:56:10He should regain consciousness soon.
00:56:13You say there were no other witnesses. Where was the museum guard?
00:56:17Well, he was in his quarters asleep. It was after 11.
00:56:19Then there was no one here at that time other than Dr. Marlon, Dr. Ritchie and the body.
00:56:25Well, I have told you. We were returning with the developed x-ray photographs we had taken.
00:56:29We were not here at the time it happened.
00:56:32Someone wanted that thing to get away.
00:56:35The canvas bonds holding the body were cut with a knife.
00:56:41Who would do such a thing? Why?
00:56:43I am only interested in one thing, to keep that monster from killing anyone else.
00:56:47Half the police of Naples are out looking for it now.
00:56:50Tina.
00:56:52Oh, you called for Tina?
00:56:54Yes, yeah.
00:56:56Well, where is she?
00:56:57What do you mean? Was she here?
00:56:58Well, yes. Where did she go?
00:57:01We have not seen her. She was not here.
00:57:05Oh.
00:57:07Oh.
00:57:09Well, Tellis must have gotten to her.
00:57:10The police are looking now. There's nothing you can do.
00:57:13Well, what about Dr. Ritchie? Where's he?
00:57:14He's in the hospital. He is very badly injured.
00:57:16We will not know how badly until the doctors have made a thorough investigation.
00:57:20That thing must be killed now, tonight.
00:57:23You are scientists.
00:57:25How do we kill it?
00:57:26What gives it life?
00:57:28Paul, we have the x-ray plates.
00:57:30Inside that shell, which has become part of the body, there's a human being.
00:57:34A man.
00:57:36A man.
00:57:37The body of a man.
00:57:40Flesh and bones.
00:57:42And a brain.
00:57:44Kept alive probably by the radioactivity in the ground, which has preserved the cells and provided energy.
00:57:49When the body was taken out of the ground, the source of energy was stopped, so that the body collapsed
00:57:54and lay dormant.
00:57:55It must have been the x-ray machine.
00:57:58In all probability, the x-ray machine did give it new energy.
00:58:02I will get it.
00:58:06Yes.
00:58:07Yes, this is Inspector Rinaldi.
00:58:11I see.
00:58:13All right.
00:58:14Begin to close the circle.
00:58:15Issue instructions to all units and give me a report every 30 minutes.
00:58:18Yes.
00:58:22No sign of the thing.
00:58:24No, not Miss Rinaldi.
00:58:25Well, we can't wait here.
00:58:27Come on.
00:58:27Dr. Mallon.
00:58:28As much as it is within our power, we have formed a circle around the Pompeii and Naples area.
00:58:32That circle is being closed now.
00:58:35There is nothing we can do but wait.
00:58:43For Quintillus and Tina Enright, the terror of that August day in the year 79 AD, when Vesuvius erupted and
00:58:51destroyed Pompeii, was being relived.
00:58:53For them, this was the day.
00:58:57Pompeii was beginning to die under flaming ash and stone.
00:59:01That circle was going to be expected to see.
00:59:06A new gun.
00:59:09A new gun.
00:59:13A new gun.
00:59:13A new gun.
00:59:14A new gun.
00:59:15A new gun.
00:59:15A new gun.
00:59:16A new gun.
00:59:21A new gun.
00:59:29Yes?
00:59:30Yes. One moment. It's for you.
00:59:36Hello? Yes, this is Maria Fiorillo.
00:59:41Thank you. Thank you for letting me know. Goodbye.
00:59:46That was the hospital. Enrico is out of danger. He will be all right.
00:59:51I'm glad, Maria. He would have been a great loss to your work.
00:59:55Perhaps to me, too. I have been blind and very stubborn.
01:00:27There was only one escape for Quintilis and the girl he had loved for all eternity.
01:00:33The sea.
01:00:35So you still refuse to tell me why Quintilis should wish to kidnap Miss Henright?
01:00:40I didn't say he tried to kidnap her. He took her because he thinks she belongs to her.
01:00:45Belongs?
01:00:45That's your half-hour call.
01:00:49Hello? Yes? Yes. The beach. Send every available car to the area. Yes.
01:00:58A shepherd reported seeing the creature carrying Miss Henright through the woods toward the Bay of Naples.
01:01:02She seemed to be unconscious.
01:01:03The bay? He has carried her over 15 miles.
01:01:06You said something about the beach.
01:01:07He's heading toward the south end of the bay.
01:01:09That's it.
01:01:10Dr. Emanuel told me about the place. It's a place called the Cove of the Blind Fisherman.
01:01:15And Quintilis is trying to reach water.
01:01:17But why?
01:01:18Because today is August 24th, the day that Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii 2,000 years ago.
01:01:23He thinks he's trying to save her.
01:01:25If he takes her into the water, she will drown. She's unconscious.
01:01:29Quickly!
01:01:32Vesuvius was reaching its terrible climax of death and destruction.
01:01:36And the strange, unreal strength of the stone man drove him on, seeking escape.
01:01:41Seeking the water of the Cove of the Blind Fisherman.
01:01:44To save his beloved Lucilla Helena.
01:02:14To save his beloved Nearly J muted him.
01:02:16It's the same message of Peter Petion's s 연트.
01:02:20All right, Hugh.
01:02:21Your father, did you?
01:02:41vender yourMan
01:02:42But don't hit the girl.
01:03:08Shoot! Now!
01:03:21Go get the girl.
01:03:42Go get the girl.
01:03:50Keena!
01:03:54Stay away!
01:04:09He... He is dissolving.
01:04:22He is turning to powder.
01:04:25Go get the girl.
01:04:29Go get the girl.
01:04:29Let's go!
01:04:30Go get the girl.
01:04:31Oh my God!
01:05:17It's all right, honey. Everything's okay now.
01:05:19What are we doing at the beach?
01:05:23You mean you don't know why you're here?
01:05:25I can't seem to remember anything.
01:05:30Uh, just as well. Let's go home, honey.
01:05:39The strange narrative of Quintillus Aurelius ended here, in the quiet waters of the Bay of Naples.
01:05:47The story is finished.
01:05:49And perhaps Quintillus Aurelius has found the true Lucilla Helena,
01:05:54where mortal men don't walk, and time is eternal.
01:06:11The story of the city council agrees with quintillus Aurelius
01:06:16as the duo of Kanes никаких technophiles are completely destroyed.
