Willard and Dibs continue to react to what Draymond Green said to Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg. What does he mean by training camp is coming soon?
Transcript
00:00Let's hear this one more time, and then we're going to go to the phones.
00:02Draymond Green, Draymond Green Show, was asked to give a review of Yaxo Lendeborg's pitch to LeBron James.
00:09A lot of people I saw like, oh, man, Yaxo gave his pitch to LeBron.
00:12Hey, what about his pitch?
00:15And he said, I know you don't like rookies that much, but I'm not the average rookie.
00:18If you're looking to play with the greatest shooter of all time, and Draymond will be glad to have you.
00:25Is the pitch too weak or too strong?
00:27I don't know.
00:28I think the pitch is pointless, but it's fine.
00:34Training camp is coming soon enough, and you got to rein the rookie in a little bit, teach him a
00:41few things.
00:43Training camp is coming soon enough.
00:46Yeah, training camp will be here pretty soon, and I think you all know why I'm hitting that training camp.
00:55And, yeah, it'll get here soon enough, Yaxo.
00:59Enjoy all your media.
01:01Training camp's on the way.
01:02It'll be here before you know it.
01:03Summer will be gone.
01:05Training camp will be here, and the journey starts.
01:10And, yeah, Yaxo, it's on the way.
01:13Okay, see, like, I receive that, and maybe this is different.
01:18Like, that's not a threat.
01:21That's the way it works.
01:23That's the way it works for Draymond when he was a rookie.
01:27Only difference was no one was paying attention because he was a second rounder.
01:31And the team wasn't very good.
01:32Yeah, but I do think that what he says about—
01:34The friends are saying, okay, Rook, and you're getting a lot of love, and you're having a lot of fun,
01:39you're doing a lot of talking, and I'll see you at training camp because there are some things to learn.
01:45This is a process that everybody goes through.
01:48Right, so he's basically saying there that come training camp, we're going to burst your bubble.
01:53Your bubble's going to get burst because summer's over.
01:55No, we're going to go through the process.
01:57Right, but does the process have to be that, you know, at training camp, we'll see you in training camp,
02:04yaks?
02:04Yes, it does.
02:05But what does that mean?
02:07Put your uniform on and go get us donuts.
02:10Stop doing interviews.
02:11Right, but we don't really do that anymore.
02:12Like, we don't dress up rookies on the road and whatnot.
02:15The Giants did.
02:15The Giants sent the rookies for coffee in Chicago.
02:18No big deal.
02:19Go get coffee.
02:20It used to be you'd have to be up in outfits and costumes and the rest of it.
02:24We don't do that anymore.
02:25Whatever.
02:25Take us to dinner, whatever it may be.
02:28And actually, I don't even think that he's talking about rookie hazing.
02:31I think he's talking about, like, this is how we do it here, and you're going to need to learn
02:37that.
02:38And any rookie who does a lot of chatting before camp has even started is going to get the exact
02:46same reaction from the veterans.
02:49From the veterans?
02:50Yes.
02:51Like, I haven't heard Al Horford weigh in or Jimmy Butler.
02:53Well, they don't have podcasts.
02:55Right, but he wasn't asked about, you know, Yaxel's pitch.
03:00He is a solo show on his podcast.
03:03But I think he was asked.
03:04In fact, I think he started it off by saying a lot of people are asking me about Yaxel's pitch.
03:10Of course.
03:10For sure.
03:11He's, like, no different than us.
03:12He comes up with his content that he wants to talk about, and then he talks about it.
03:15The one thing I do agree with that Draymond said is, like, the Yaxel pitch is meaningless.
03:21I don't know if LeBron has ever met Yaxel-Lendenborg, but if LeBron hears that pitch, he's probably not thinking,
03:29Oh, Yax wants me?
03:32I'm in.
03:33Not only do I agree with that, I think Draymond's pitch was meaningless.
03:37I think everybody's pitch was meaningless.
03:39Well, Draymond at least went on a vacation with the guy, and he's friends with him, so.
03:42I mean, LeBron will listen to him, absolutely.
03:45But you know my thought on this.
03:46I think LeBron, LeBron is LeBron.
03:49He goes where he wants to go, and he probably had thoughts on this three, four, five months ago,
03:54and made his decision, and now he's executing it, and this is all part of the plan and the process
04:00of unfolding it.
04:01But, yeah, Grandy, so what led to this?
04:04Well, I sometimes, this will be a bloop for myself, but I sometimes work on Draymond's podcast.
04:09A bloop?
04:09So I can tell you the context of how this came up.
04:13Wait a minute.
04:13Are you topic building for Draymond Green?
04:16Not in this one.
04:18Oh!
04:19Oh!
04:21Beep, beep, beep, beep!
04:24Boosh!
04:25Anyway.
04:25Totally.
04:26That is a boosh.
04:27He has a Google Doc in front of him, and it's a bunch of, you know, notes and things that
04:33he wants to get into during the day,
04:34and one of the things that the producers of the podcast do is they wrote out probably what Yaxel's pitch
04:40was.
04:41They wrote it out for him so he could read it because he read it, and then they ask a
04:45question of Draymond,
04:46and the question was, is the pitch too weak or too strong?
04:49That was the question the producers asked of Draymond.
04:51He then asked the question to the audience, and then he gave his answer to the question.
04:55This won't surprise you.
04:56I now have other questions.
04:57I have 17 questions.
04:59Like, how many of those have you produced or been a part of?
05:03I mean, it started at the beginning of the season, and it's like, I don't know, once a month, whenever
05:08they need me, really.
05:09Have you, at any point, talked directly to Draymond pre-show about the plan for the show?
05:17Yeah, yeah.
05:20Okay.
05:21Wow.
05:21How many times?
05:23Whenever I'm working on the show.
05:24Does he?
05:25So you guys do, like, a show meeting?
05:26Not really.
05:27He'll just hop on, and then I'll be like, all right, this is what, you know, you should be talking
05:32about today or whatever.
05:33Like, he asks you, hey, Grandy, what should we do today on the show?
05:36There's multiple people involved.
05:38It's not just me.
05:39Right, right, right.
05:40I didn't say.
05:40There was nobody else.
05:42We'll send over the link to him, and he can join the Google Doc, and then he'll give it a
05:47look.
05:47Yeah, that's good.
05:48That's good.
05:49Let's try something.
05:50Yeah.
05:51Is there anything that has happened on the show that directly came from you?
05:56The shows that I've worked on?
05:58Yeah, but again, it's like once a month, and I haven't done any during the offseason, actually.
06:01Yeah, yeah, don't diminish it.
06:01Okay, and so what happened on the show that was straight from Grandy?
06:06He cursed me out one time on this podcast.
06:09I don't want to hear about that.
06:10On the pod?
06:11Yeah.
06:12Wait a minute.
06:12By name?
06:13Yeah.
06:13Let's talk about this.
06:15He said, bleep you, Mark.
06:16Because why?
06:18I shouldn't have even brought any of this up.
06:20Yes, you should have.
06:21It was around March Madness.
06:23Okay.
06:24And one of the things.
06:25You said Michigan was going to win it all.
06:27No, one of the things that we had him do.
06:29This actually wasn't even my idea directly, but it was the episode that I was working on.
06:33It was, I think it was during the Sweet 16.
06:35And Michigan State was in the Sweet 16.
06:38And we, there was a post online of best NBA player from each Sweet 16 team.
06:44Oh, boy.
06:45And it got to Michigan State, and they listed Jaron Jackson Jr.
06:49Uh-huh.
06:50Not Magic Johnson?
06:51Currently playing.
06:52Oh, great.
06:53Okay.
06:54And Draymond gets to that, and then he gets, he runs through the whole spiel.
06:58He gets to the end of it, and he essentially says, I don't even know why you guys wanted me
07:03to talk about this.
07:04He's like, what's the point of it?
07:05And he said, actually, I do know.
07:07I bet the producers think I'm going to be upset that they listed Jaron Jackson Jr.
07:11And not me.
07:11So then he goes, bleep you, Mark.
07:13And bleep you, Greg, who's the other producer.
07:15And then he just moved along.
07:16But yeah.
07:17So he calls you Mark.
07:18He calls me Mark.
07:19And I hope you have that drop.
07:21And if not, you should post for our very own Mark in here.
07:25Draymond Green telling off Mark Willard?
07:27That's too good.
07:28That's strong.
07:29Can you find it?
07:30I can find it.
07:31He can find everything, this guy.
07:32Yeah, find it.
07:33Find it.
07:33He's like human microfiche.
07:36I don't even know if I want to do our show anymore.
07:38I just want to talk to Grandy about producing the Draymond Green show.
07:41You need to hit the River Islands guest line then, because Mark Grandy joins us.
07:46Bleep you, Mark.
07:47That's pretty awesome.
07:48I'll go.
07:48I'll find it.
07:48I had no idea.
07:49But I haven't done an episode during the offseason.
07:53So I don't know.
07:54I haven't talked to him in a while.
07:55What determines whether or not you do a show?
07:57Whenever the normal producers are unavailable or it's a late night and they're out east and he's
08:02out here on the West Coast.
08:04What determines when he does a show?
08:07He does them twice a week.
08:09Twice a week.
08:09But I mean, is it the same two days or is it just when he's feeling?
08:12No, it just kind of depends on his schedule.
08:13Okay.
08:14Yeah.
08:14So it's kind of like when Kobe calls his trainer, like you just need to be there when he's
08:18like podcast time and everybody starts running around like crazy people.
08:22I mean, there's like a general set schedule, but you know, life happens.
08:25You got to move things around sometimes.
08:26Jacksall makes a pitch.
08:27And so now it's an emergency pod is how that works.
08:31When's the latest that you've ever been up talking to Draymond Green?
08:34Oh God, probably like 1 a.m.
08:36Um, right.
08:39And you get a text and it's like, oh, I'm, I got to drop what I'm doing and get right
08:43to this.
08:44Uh, I'll kind of know like day in advance that I'll probably be needed that night, but
08:49yeah.
08:50This is so good.
08:52Yeah.
08:52Well, thank you for, uh, like withstanding all those questions.
08:55You probably have more, but yeah, I don't want, like, I feel like we've kind of hit a
09:00standstill, but I don't want to be done.
09:02I want to think of more.
09:03Well, the only other one I can think of is, have you talked to Draymond about coming
09:07on our show?
09:09No, I have not.
09:10Okay.
09:11And yeah.
09:12Is that off?
09:13Is that off limits?
09:14Me asking him that?
09:16Yeah.
09:16No.
09:17Well, what the hell are you doing?
09:19Well, he probably would say no.
09:20I believe he would say bleep you, Mark.
09:22Is that the way you date people too?
09:24Do you not ask?
09:25Cause she might say no.
09:27No, but this is Draymond Green we're talking about.
09:30So what?
09:30What do you got to lose?
09:32All he could do is say no.
09:33He could say, I'll see you in training camp.
09:35Training camp's coming, Mark.
09:37You could.
09:38Training camp's coming.
09:40Ask him.
09:40We'll work on it.
09:42Axe him.
09:43I mean, I'd say that they're close, but he did say bleep you, Mark.
09:48So maybe.
09:48He did.
09:49Yeah.
09:50Is this always over Google Doc or Zoom or have you ever been in the room with him?
09:53I have not been in the room with him.
09:55You ever been in any room with him?
09:57Don't say Chase Center.
09:59Not including Chase Center, no.
10:01Okay.
10:01I don't think so.
10:02I know you get invited to parties and stuff like that.
10:04I didn't know if you.
10:05Oh, well, yeah, I guess.
10:07Oh.
10:07Steph's all-star party.
10:08Draymond was there.
10:09And where was that?
10:10Splash.
10:11That's not Chase Center.
10:12And that is a room.
10:13It's a very large room.
10:14Okay.
10:15Counts.
10:16Count it.
10:17I had no idea.
10:18I had no idea that Grandy was this much of a mover and a shaker.
10:21Bleep you, Mark.
10:22That's pretty awesome.
10:23All right.
10:23Thanks.
10:23Let's go to the phones.
10:24This is going to come up again, just so you know.
10:27Got to be like a Draymond podcast.
10:29Just out of nowhere, we'll be like, all right, start talking, Grandy.
10:33And I look forward to Grandy's pitch to Draymond about coming on our show.
10:38That's actually a pretty good idea.
10:41Actually, we should probably, we should workshop that.
10:44See if Grandy can, is Grandy's pitch better than Yax's pitch for LeBron?
10:49It would be no different than Yax's.
10:50Didn't Yax'll say, if you want to play with the greatest of all time, then you can come play with
10:56us.
10:56Yeah.
10:57You should say the same thing, Randy.
11:00Draymond.
11:01What's my pitch?
11:02What am I saying?
11:02You want to talk to the greatest of all time?
11:05Who are we talking about?
11:05And Draymond?
11:07Never mind.
11:08All right.
11:09The great one?
11:12Other people got it.
11:13Don't worry.
11:14Let's go to Martin Luther in San Francisco.
11:17Hi, Martin.
11:18Thanks for calling.
11:19Hey, what's up, guys?
11:20What's up?
11:20I listen to y'all all the time.
11:22Y'all are awesome.
11:23This is Martin Luther from San Francisco.
11:24I got a couple things, or maybe three things.
11:26Okay.
11:28Yax'll is going to have to focus on proving why he got drafted in the first place.
11:34So what Draymond said about training camp is coming.
11:37It's accurate because it's a lot of proving still to happen before game one.
11:42And we got to hope that we got somebody like Aaron Gordon out of Yaxl in the future, somebody
11:49that's going to be able to deliver and be a consistent player that is going to draw the
11:53defense, that's going to make people think.
11:55Because if Yaxl comes in freshman, rookie year, and start balling and embarrassing people,
11:59it's going to make people look at the Warriors totally different, like you got multiple threats.
12:03That's one thing.
12:05LeBron and Steph.
12:06Now, I've been saying this since the Olympics, I think that they both would like to get that
12:11fifth ring together.
12:13Now, I don't know if it's going to happen, but think about that.
12:16That'll be a Cinderella story for the whole year.
12:19And if they actually pull it off, I'm not a LeBron fan like that.
12:23I respect his game.
12:25He's an amazing player.
12:26One of the greatest of all time.
12:28I'm from the MJ era.
12:29So, it's over when it comes down to comparisons.
12:31But, think about what would happen every night, every game across the United States and around
12:38the world if those two cats was playing on the same team, albeit having a healthy season
12:43together.
12:44I think a fifth ring would be guaranteed.
12:46Lastly, Mark Spears is coming on here.
12:49Yes.
12:50And tell him, Martin Luther from San Francisco, my new album comes out tomorrow, and he better
12:56buy two copies of own vinyl.
12:58So, that's it.
12:59Okay.
13:00I love it.
13:01Martin, thank you for calling in.
13:03On vinyl.
13:03Two copies.
13:04Why two copies?
13:05One for home and maybe one for the road.
13:08I mean, vinyl for the road?
13:09It's a little bit of a stretch, but I'll say this, Mr. Martin Luther, and I was going
13:14to say this about his voice before I found out he has an album.
13:17Strong.
13:17Man's got a good voice.
13:18Yep.
13:19I don't know if it translates to singing, like yours doesn't.
13:21He's no Simon from Silverado, but it's close.
13:25Yeah.
13:25It's close.
13:26That voice is phenomenal, so.
13:27I'll have to do a little Spotify googlage on Martin Luther here during the break.
13:32Look, what Martin is saying, and I don't think Steph and LeBron playing together guarantees
13:36some sort of a ring like he does, but look, bottom line, and maybe this sounds overly simplistic
13:43after all the discussion.
13:44Does that sound attractive to those two guys?
13:47You damn well better believe it does.
13:49You know?
13:49That's probably something we haven't mentioned enough.
13:52Simple A or B.
13:55A. Are LeBron and Steph bothered by the idea of teaming up because certain people out there
14:03think that that's, I don't know.
14:06Soft.
14:07Anti-competitive.
14:08Right.
14:08Or does it sound really, really super-duper fun?
14:13B.
14:15B.
14:16Right.
14:16Look at their faces.
14:17Listen to them.
14:18Watch the, go watch the video of the Olympics.
14:21Um, yes.
14:23Yes.
14:23I think it sounds super fun to them.
14:25Will it happen?
14:26I don't know.
14:27But I think it sounds musical to them.
14:30And as far as it being the way the two of them end their career, yeah, joyful, poetic,
14:38maybe annoying to some, but they don't care about that.
14:41That'd be my guess.
14:42Yeah, I would imagine they don't care.
14:44They're all made men in the association.
14:46They're all Hall of Famers.
14:48They're all nearing the end of their career.
14:50So why would it bother any of them?
14:53And we don't really assign this to other people in other sports when Aaron Donald decides,
14:59oh, you, you got Miles Garrett.
15:00I might want to be a Ram again.
15:02No one's going to say, oh, that's so soft.
15:04I mean, why didn't you come back before Miles Garrett was there?
15:07No, I like doing the NBA.
15:10We do it in the NBA, but it's sort of because it's not really applicable in other sports.
15:16Um, baseball doesn't play that way.
15:18Football does, but you couldn't join up.
15:20You couldn't have Peyton Manning and Tom Brady play together.
15:23True.
15:24Because, obviously, I don't even need to explain that.
15:27But I get what you're saying.
15:29Um, it's an NBA thing, um, but I'm with you, and I've thought for a while, and I've said
15:37this on the show, this is the cool part about getting later in whatever it is you're doing.
15:43I don't really love calling these guys old.
15:44They're NBA old, but they're not old men.
15:47But the cool part about being comfortable in your skin, whatever it is that you do in
15:52life, is you arrive at a spot where you're like, you're able to get in contact with what
15:58makes you happy.
15:59You're able to get in contact with what you want, and then you do that.
16:04And you could not give two Casey Schmitz what anybody else thinks about it.
16:13That's, I love that.
16:15I love that.
16:17That's part of why I like this idea.
16:20I know some people, oh my God, LeBron and Steph, same team.
16:24I love it, because that's them just being like, this makes us happy, and this would be
16:30a show, and you don't need to make it about something else that it's not.
16:35Yeah, and it's not, I mean, as fans, we can all decide what we think it's about, but they
16:40get to decide what they want to do, and this is where Kevin Durant, I think, has had a long
16:45struggle with what other people think, because he's gone from here to there, to there, to
16:50there, to there, and he bounces around, and he's got that burner account, because he wants
16:54to clap back at people, and I don't think that LeBron James would ever think about that.
16:59We know that Steph does it, and Draymond's got his podcast, and quite frankly, he doesn't
17:04really care about what anyone thinks, other than our own Mark Grandy.
17:09There are more on that coming up around the bed.
17:11Let's go to Josue in Concord.
17:13Josue, thank you for calling.
17:16Yo, guys, you got me?
17:18We got you.
17:20All right.
17:21How you guys doing?
17:21First time caller.
17:23The reason, yeah, sir, I really enjoy your guys' show.
17:28I think I'm right there with Dibs.
17:31As you said, he was making the faces, as he heard what Draymond was saying.
17:36I was making all types of faces.
17:39I think that he needs to chill out.
17:42I think he's bugging out.
17:44He's not really sending.
17:46I understand what he's trying to do, but he, you know, given his history he has in training
17:51camp, we all know he just, you know, needs to pump the brakes a little bit and put on
17:58his mentor cap.
17:59I think him and Steph need to be better mentors this year.
18:04As they're exiting and new players are coming in, I think if they really want to leave the
18:08organization in a good spot, like they publicly stated, I think it's time to start mentoring,
18:15and Draymond needs to relax.
18:17And then I got a question for you guys, too, before I go.
18:20How do you guys feel about Grandy working for Draymond?
18:23Josue, thank you.
18:25We love Grandy working for Draymond, if he can deliver him.
18:30Right.
18:31I also love the fact that he's been keeping this a secret for almost a year now.
18:36I mean, I kind of knew that there was something.
18:38I didn't know how involved it was.
18:41I knew there was something.
18:43I've mentioned it before.
18:44Yeah, I knew he was on there.
18:45I had no clue.
18:46Yeah.
18:47By the way, Josue says Draymond needs to be a better mentor.
18:50My point is, I think that's what he's saying.
18:53I think Draymond has been a mentor to a lot of Warriors, and that reputation got ruined
18:59because of what he did to Jordan Poole.
19:01But Jordan Poole used to say that Draymond Green was his mentor.
19:05Right.
19:06And we don't really know what sort of mentorship Draymond Green has provided before Jordan
19:11Poole or after, but many of the young players vouch for Draymond Green.
19:15And so, yeah, and they're in the room with him every day.
