00:00Thursday, Stiney's Friday. That's why he was in such a jolly mood.
00:04No Willard today. It's Dibs and Grandy on Willard and Dibs.
00:08He ran 95-7 the game. This is the most Friday-feeling Thursday.
00:11That was a Friday crossover, is what that felt like.
00:13No doubt. Everything but what's bugging you, and we'll save up something for tomorrow.
00:17But, yeah, everything is on the precipice, I feel like, of something happening, maybe.
00:24Like, Brandon Aiyu could be cut. He won't.
00:27Brandon Aiyu. And LeBron James could decide he won't.
00:30The Giants could actually decide to, I don't know, compete in a baseball game.
00:35Oh, they won't.
00:35They won't. But today's kind of one of those weird days where it feels like there's a bunch of things,
00:40and we've got World Cup, France, Morocco, into the second half.
00:44Like, somebody's going to win this one, and that probably is the most likely result of all the things I
00:50just mentioned.
00:51A winner of this soccer game?
00:52Someone's going to advance.
00:54Yeah, guaranteed.
00:54Who knows how long it will take, but it will happen eventually.
00:58Right, but, like, LeBron, probably not.
01:00Like, the Giants, what are they doing? Who knows?
01:02And then the Aiyu thing feels like it's going to be another three weeks before it's three more weeks.
01:07And so, yeah, like, everything that feels like there's urgency, it doesn't also feel like there's urgency.
01:13Yeah.
01:14If you're a dedicated listener to 95.7 The Game, first of all, welcome in.
01:18Again, it's Dibs and Grandy with you in for Willard here on Willard and Dibs.
01:22You haven't heard a ton of Giants talk the last couple of weeks, and there's a couple of reasons for
01:26that.
01:27The number one reason is LeBron James and everything that's happened over the last 10-ish days with Draymond Green
01:34opting out and it being announced LeBron's not going to return to the Lakers and all the drama that has
01:39ensued since then.
01:42But nothing's really changed, Dibs.
01:44We haven't talked a lot about the Giants of late, but nothing has really changed.
01:47Did they reach a new low yesterday?
01:50Yeah, probably.
01:50They're now a season-worst 16 games under .500 after they got blown out by Dylan Cease and the Blue
01:57Jays.
01:58They lose 10-0.
01:59They were no-hit through eight.
02:01Elliott Ramos, as Gu was mentioning during the crossover, bat-flipped a single to lead off the ninth to erase
02:07the no-hitter,
02:08but the Giants still lose 10-0, and Logan Webb, who gave up five runs before he could blink in
02:13the first inning and then was very good after that,
02:16he takes to social media to defend himself and call out members of the media, fans, everyone alike that's tweeting
02:23at him and is upset about the way that this team is playing.
02:26He goes to social media to defend himself.
02:28Later on, he deletes his account or deactivates it, whatever.
02:32The tweets do not exist anymore.
02:33His account does not exist anymore.
02:35And this just feels like a new low for the Giants.
02:40I didn't realize they could reach a new low, but they found a way yesterday to reach a new low.
02:45It's kind of a different low for me because, yes, you are 16 games below.
02:49That's a new low.
02:50You've never been this far below .500, but it feels different because, you know, Logan Webb was frustrated when Tony
02:57Vitello took him out after eight innings,
02:58and then the bullpen blew it, and then the next game, he was able to go out there and complete
03:02the game,
03:03and he's been mostly really good, if not spectacular, up until yesterday, and then yesterday happens, and it's a bad
03:10first inning,
03:11and you lose 10-0, which he didn't give up all 10, but after the game, I'm sure he'sā
03:15He's six shutty after the first.
03:18Right, so he's looking at all of the things, and he's frustrated, and they got one hit, and, yeah, enough
03:23is enough.
03:23And I do think that it might speak to a deeper issue in the clubhouse as far as, like, how
03:29this year has gone,
03:30how it's been handled from the manager to the general manager, the president of the baseball ops.
03:35Yesterday, to me, felt like a little bit more of a tip of the iceberg of the frustration.
03:40Yeah.
03:40I mean, I don't mind the players, the star players on my favorite sports teams being, I don't know, open
03:49to conversing,
03:50and, you know, Steph says he sees everything.
03:53He's not one to go on Twitter and reply to anybody like that.
03:56I'm sure he doesn't even run his own Twitter, but he sees stuff, right?
04:00And he's talked about that, how he sees and reads everything.
04:03I think a lot of these athletes, they do that more than probably a lot of us fully know or
04:08expect.
04:09I think a lot of these guys are searching their names and are aware of things that are being said
04:13about them and all of that.
04:14And so I don't mind a player that is aware of all that, that does seek it out and at
04:20times has to, you know, defend themselves.
04:23But it does seem to me, Dibs, that Logan Webb doing it the way that he did it yesterday says
04:30something about how he's feeling in general,
04:33not just about what happened yesterday.
04:35This is not just about yesterday and giving up five runs in the first and then figuring things out and
04:38being good the rest of the game,
04:40but the team losing 10-0 and nearly getting no hit.
04:42This is about the season as a whole.
04:44And for Logan Webb, this might be about his career as a whole.
04:47Not that he is performing poorly.
04:50He's an all-star.
04:51And, you know, some of the things that he was responding to was a fan saying,
04:54you're an all-star, you with your four-point whatever ERA this season, this is an all-star.
04:59And Logan Webb was like, yeah, that's me.
05:00I'm an all-star.
05:01This isn't about that.
05:03This is about, I think, the frustration that Logan Webb is feeling being saddled on this team
05:08that cannot do anything right when Logan Webb is great, when Logan Webb is all right, when he's bad.
05:14It doesn't matter.
05:15You lose anyway because the team around him is so bad.
05:17Right.
05:18And even when, like yesterday, he was not great.
05:20He gave up five runs.
05:21And it was a little bit of a sideways first inning.
05:23But, yeah, you play bad, and now you're 16 below, and everybody wants to come for you
05:29because you're supposed to be the ace, and you're this all-star.
05:31And if you look at what he's done over his last six or seven starts, he's been spectacular.
05:36He was the pitcher of the month.
05:38In June.
05:39In the month of June.
05:39And so if you're Logan, and you look at your record, your ERA, and you look at the team's record,
05:45and you're frustrated, and now fans are coming for you, and it's easy to come for Logan
05:49because he's been better than what he's been this year.
05:52But if you're Logan, you're thinking, my first four or five starts coming off the WBC,
05:57my knee was not great.
05:58No excuses, but I was shaky.
06:01I went on the IL.
06:02I got better.
06:03I was dominant.
06:04And the second he comes back from the IL, he's the best pitcher in baseball.
06:07Right, and so now he's had a bad outing, and it's like, oh, and you're really an all-star?
06:12So if you're Logan, I get the frustration, but I think it goes deeper than just how he's doing.
06:17It's how they're all doing.
06:18Yeah.
06:18So what do you think, why do you think he felt the need to go on Twitter?
06:24And it's not just like one response.
06:25We were talking about with Steining and Goo.
06:27They said something about Logan a couple of weeks ago and was put out on social,
06:31and he responded to the post from our station's Twitter account,
06:34at 957thegame, and he said, who are these guys?
06:37Right.
06:37Which is funny, and that's kind of playful, and as Steine said, like, I got a kick out of that,
06:41which is great, and that's the way to take it, I think, when an athlete responds to something like that.
06:47But what do you think is running through Logan Webb's mind when he's on Twitter yesterday,
06:51responding not once, not twice, not three times, but over and over and over to almost anybody that's tweeting at
06:57him?
06:57And sub-tweeting him, not adding him, but sub-tweeting him, just saying Logan Webb.
07:01The way it works, you go onto Twitter, maybe you see some of it naturally pop up because of the
07:05Twitter algorithm feeds you stuff,
07:07but you search your name, you go to the search bar, you search Logan Webb, and you see what people
07:12are saying about you.
07:13And the need to respond.
07:16What do you think Logan Webb is feeling about this entire situation?
07:20I think he's looking at it like, you know, bone thugs at Harmony, and it's the crossroads.
07:25Like, you're at the crossroads.
07:26You've got two more years after this, and so you can stay a giant, and you can do your level
07:31best,
07:31and after that, you can be a free agent and go out there and pitch for whomever you want.
07:35Or you're looking at a team where you're 16 below, and you've been mostly great throughout the course of your
07:42major league career,
07:43and yet now you're in a spot that has you further away from the playoffs than ever before.
07:47And we go back to 2021, the anomaly year where he pitched two playoff games.
07:53He gave up one run, and you couldn't even advance.
07:57And so if I'm Logan, I'm looking at this whole situation, which is we don't have a lot of help
08:03in the rotation.
08:04We have a terrible bullpen, and we have an offense that's good, but not quite good enough.
08:09I have a manager who I'm not really sure about, so I would not fault him if he was, you
08:14know, quietly saying,
08:15Hey, why don't you look to shop me?
08:17Well, that's where my mind immediately went, and this is where I want to hear from Giants fans.
08:21888-957-9570.
08:24It's Willard and Dibs, but Dibs and Grandy in today.
08:28888-957-9570.
08:31Why do you think Logan Webb is taking Twitter the way that he is,
08:34and what do you think that says about how he feels about this entire situation?
08:37You were talking during the crossover about Tony Vitella.
08:39I think you bring up a good point, the feeling of, you know, the stepdad, right?
08:44Stepping in and trying to take over and trying, lack of a better term, control, corral these veterans,
08:50and you compare them to like a 16-year-old kid who's about to leave the house and become an
08:54adult.
08:55Right.
08:55How do you, as their new guardian, how do you come in and corral them and, you know, show them
09:01who's boss or whatever phrase you want to use?
09:04I can't imagine the, that being something that Logan Webb feels terribly great about going forward.
09:11Because he's not getting younger, I mean, he's almost 30 years old now, and he's been good for so many
09:16years at this point.
09:17Not just good, but really, really good.
09:19Darn near great.
09:20I wouldn't be upset if anybody described him as great over the last five years.
09:24He has been consistently one of the best pitchers in the National League for each of the last five seasons.
09:29I can't imagine that he's okay with just hanging out, hoping things go well,
09:36giving Tony Vitella another year to figure things out,
09:38hoping that the, you know, that ownership decides we're going to spend more money,
09:42they're going to add more starting pitching, they're going to solve the bullpen, do all those things.
09:46I got to imagine, Dib, that in the back of his mind, he might be thinking like,
09:50as much as I love it here, I'm a Northern California kid, maybe I got to get out of here.
09:55I can't help but think that might be on his mind.
09:57And if you look at like the immediate future, and I'm thinking about like next season, for example,
10:02because this year is done, it's done and dusted, and Robbie Ray is not signed for next year,
10:07and I would imagine that he's leaving.
10:09So Logan comes back, Roop comes back, either Hauser or Mally has an extra year.
10:16I like it.
10:17I mean, they're an amalgamation sensation.
10:18They really are.
10:19They're the same guy.
10:20They're two guys.
10:21One of them has an extra year, one of them doesn't,
10:23but neither one of them, quite frankly, should be in the rotation next year.
10:27Hauser has the extra year, yeah.
10:28Yeah, if you're Logan, you're like, okay, it's me and Landon Roop,
10:31who's been a little bit like, he's kind of come back to earth a little bit.
10:35And so if you're Logan and you're thinking, how do we go from where we are now
10:39to get me back to the playoffs?
10:41It's probably not next year.
10:43Doesn't seem like it.
10:44It might be the year after, and then that's his walk year.
10:46So, I mean, again, I don't begrudge Logan for thinking about maybe wanting to be elsewhere.
10:52Yeah.
10:53So 888-957-9570.
10:56How do you feel?
10:57I want to hear from Giants fans how you feel specifically about Logan Webb,
11:01because I was sitting in with the boss earlier today, and we were talking about Logan Webb,
11:06and he just asked me, yeah, Bloop, I got to talk to the boss today.
11:09That's a big deal.
11:10And he just asked me, how do you feel emotionally as a Giants fan about Logan Webb?
11:15Like, compare it to how you felt about Timmy or Mad Bum or Kane or even like Vogelsang
11:21or anybody like that.
11:22And my immediate first response was, well, Logan Webb is an amazing pitcher, a great pitcher.
11:27You know, maybe in my lifetime, pitchers that have been better than Logan Webb on the Giants,
11:34maybe it's just that core three of the championship era.
11:37Lincecum, Kane, Bumgarner.
11:39It might just be those guys.
11:41Legitimately, it might just be those guys better than Logan Webb in my lifetime as a Giants fan.
11:45But I don't feel the same emotional connection.
11:47I don't think that's his fault.
11:48It's because the team hasn't won around him.
11:51And if that's how I feel, I wonder if that's how other Giants fans feel,
11:55and I wonder if that's how Logan Webb feels.
11:57Maybe he doesn't have the same emotional connection to the franchise either
11:59because his career is running out and he wants to try to win and get to the playoffs.
12:03He's pitched in two playoff games in his career.
12:05He deserves a whole lot more than that.
12:07And he shoved in both of those.
12:08And that's where it gets frustrating because he did his part.
12:11I mean, he did his level best.
12:13And then yet they were unable to go ahead and advance.
12:15And I was doing the dive on the last time a Giants team was this bad
12:19and we can get into it 2017 and they got to the deadline and they did basically nothing.
12:26And it's because they had three or four or five or six guys on that team that were already made
12:31men.
12:31Now, this team, you don't have that.
12:33And you are almost as bad as the 2017 team.
12:36But none of these guys have that same sort of level of like, oh, we were champions.
12:41So it might be a little bit of a different approach.
12:43Yeah.
12:44Let's take a break.
12:45Eric, I see you on hold.
12:46We will get to you when we come back 888-957-9570.
12:51How do you feel about Logan and Webb Giants fans?
12:53Oh, you can tell me how good of a pitcher you think he is.
12:56I think he's a great pitcher.
12:57But how do you feel about his future with the Giants?
13:00How torn up would you be if he's not a Giant in the future?
13:03And we got the trade deadline, which is now less than a month away.
13:07These decisions are going to come pretty quick.
13:09The draft is coming up.
13:11Once you get through the draft, front offices around baseball will change gear
13:15and they'll start picking up phones and calling other general managers about trades.
13:19What should the Giants do?
13:21And how upset would you be if Logan Webb is no longer a Giant going forward?
13:24If you haven't already, make sure to subscribe to Willard and Dibs on the free Odyssey app

13:40and the Giants' 10-0 loss to the Blue Jays.
