The developers famous for the colorful world of Spyro found themselves relegated to supporting games like Warzone and Overwatch 2. This is the story of how the studio fought to buy back their independence from Activision and return to making the games they love.

00:00Imagine you're a gaming CEO overseeing a studio that's famous for beloved, colourful,
00:04family-friendly platformers. What do you make it do? If you answered put them to work designing
00:09assault rifles for Call of Duty, then thanks for tuning in Mr. Kotick. That's pretty much
00:12what happened to Spyro Studio Toys for Bob, which found itself relegated to supporting
00:16games like Warzone and Overwatch 2 at Activision. That's per studio head Paul Yan, who says
00:22deep down inside, we knew that it wasn't the right fit. We were getting away from the types
00:26of games that we love to make. Yan says the studio saw Microsoft's Activision buyout as
00:30an opportunity. We put forth a plan that said, hey, we'd like to buy back our independence.
00:34It was a close run thing, and Yan says it took many mini miracles to get out of the
00:38COD mines. But they made it, and yes, they're a lot happier making Spyro games.
