00:00If you've got a question and you don't know where to go
00:08Ask Nina for some help, cause she's got a science show
00:11She makes sense of her senses while helping all her fans
00:14By doing her experiments with potions and with bats
00:17Touch her tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, nose
00:22Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know
00:26Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know
00:29He helps us with our eyes and Felix with our touch
00:32Ollie sniffs our smells and sends some bells she hears so much
00:35But it's Ollie's brother, he helps us with our taste
00:38Then he does little neurons and they're coming to your place
00:41Touch her tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, nose
00:46Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know
00:50Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know
00:53Oh yeah!
00:54Oh hello, I'm just filling up my watering can
01:00Silly me, I forgot to water my little plant
01:03And the soil's all dried up
01:05Needs a drink of water
01:06That's better
01:08I hear a beep, I see a flash
01:13I wonder what they're going to ask
01:14Hi Nina!
01:19Hi guys!
01:21We've got a question for you
01:24Why do we have to wait for our paintings to dry?
01:27That's a great question!
01:29Why do we have to wait for our paintings to dry?
01:32So why don't you come down to my lab and we'll do some experiments to investigate
01:36See you soon Nina! Bye!
01:40Bye!
01:41Well I'm going to need some help to answer this one
01:43And I know just who to ask
01:45Okay neurons, time to get to work
01:47Okay, today's question is why do we have to wait for our paintings to dry?
02:11Now which neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us find the answer?
02:15Me!
02:16Me, me, me
02:17Will it be Fabulous Felix?
02:19I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch
02:23Will it be Beautiful Belle?
02:25I send messages to Graham from ear
02:27If there's a sound, I'll help you hear
02:29Will it be Lovely Look?
02:31For looking and seeing, day or night, I'll help you with your sense of sight
02:36Will it be Awesome Ollie?
02:38If it's Polly or Wiffy but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell
02:43Or will it be Baby Bud?
02:44Sour, salty, bitter or sweet I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat
02:49It's Felix!
02:54Go Felix!
02:55Go Felix!
02:57Go Felix!
02:58Go Felix!
02:59Go Felix!
03:00Go Felix!
03:01Go Felix!
03:01Go Felix!
03:02Go Felix!
03:03Go Felix!
03:04Marvellous!
03:04A little touch can mean so much, Nina!
03:07Today's question is why do we have to wait for our paintings to dry
03:12Now, we feel if something is dry or not
03:14So Felix, our touch neuron will be helping me today
03:17Right, I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive
03:21Tia likes skipping, Katie likes making jewellery, Lucy loves art
03:27But they all want to know why paintings have to dry
03:30So today, for one day only, Tia, Katie and Lucy become the experimenters
03:36Hi, Nina!
03:37Hi, Nina!
03:38Hi, Nina!
03:39Oh, welcome to my science lab!
03:42It's lovely to see you all
03:44Now, you asked why do we have to wait for our paintings to dry
03:49But why do you want to know?
03:50We love painting, but we don't like waiting for them to dry
03:53Oh, I know that feeling
03:55You've spent time painting a lovely picture and then you can't touch it for ages because it's wet
04:00I think we need to investigate to find out more
04:02And for our first experiment, we're going to use our senses
04:06Whoop-whoop! A senses experiment! We're ready, Nina!
04:10You're going to make some lovely pictures for me
04:13So Katie, you'll be using the felt-tip pens
04:15And Lucy, you've got runny poster paints
04:18And Tia, you'll be using the hard paint blocks
04:21OK, time to get experimenting with art!
04:24Nina, my paint's not working
04:35Please may I have some water?
04:37Oh, of course Tia, I'm so sorry!
04:40Of course you'll need water, I totally forgot!
04:43There you go, pop it there for you
04:45And Lucy, you don't need water because the poster paint you're using is like the hard paints
04:50But already has water mixed in
04:52What lovely bright colours they're using
05:01These pictures will look beautiful
05:04Oh, your pictures are looking great, guys
05:07And Katie, how are you finding the felt-tip pens?
05:10Fine, Nina
05:11Good
05:12Try touching the tip of the felt-tip pen
05:16How does it feel?
05:17Oh!
05:18Oh, that's tickly, Nina!
05:19Oh, stop!
05:20Oh!
05:21It feels a little bit wet
05:24Yeah, the felt-tip pen feels a bit wet because it contains a tiny bit of water
05:29But what about your picture?
05:31Does it feel wet?
05:32No
05:33And what about the two painted pictures?
05:36It's wet
05:38Still wet
05:39Oh!
05:40Oh, yeah, it's still wet, isn't it?
05:43Oh, yes, definitely still wet
05:45So this senses experiment has shown us that felt-tip pens dry straight away when you use them
05:51But paints take a while to dry because they're mixed with water
05:55I thought we need to do another experiment and I need to wash my hands
05:58It's my turn to make a picture now and I'm using a different type of paint
06:06It's called a dry powder paint
06:08Here we go
06:10That's strange-looking paint
06:13It's all powdery
06:15Oh!
06:17Oh!
06:18What can you see happening?
06:20It's slipping off your brush
06:22Yeah!
06:23Well, I'll try painting a picture now
06:25Oh!
06:26Oh!
06:27It's just making a bit of a mess, isn't it?
06:30It's not working very well, is it, Nina?
06:33No, it's not
06:36Oh!
06:37Oh!
06:38Nina's picture's falling off the paper!
06:41We want our paintings to last a bit longer than that, don't we?
06:44Well, actually, I knew that was going to happen
06:48You see, all paint colours start out as dry powders like this
06:53And the dry paint colour needs to be mixed with wet things like water
06:57To help it move around and stick to the paper
07:00And then when the water dries, the colour is left behind
07:04We found out earlier that felt-tip pens contain a tiny bit of water
07:09And they also contain a special chemical that helps the colour to dry really quickly
07:14And I have some of the special chemical here
07:17Now watch this
07:18So I'm just going to dip some cotton wool into some water
07:22And spread the water here
07:25And now I'll do the same with the special chemical
07:31I wonder what's going to happen?
07:38So what's happened?
07:40The chemical's gone, but the water's still there
07:43That's right
07:44And because the chemical is in felt-tip pens
07:47Pictures drawn with felt-tip pens dry really quickly
07:51So if pens dry faster than paint
07:53Which would you rather use to colour a picture in with?
07:56Pens!
07:57Pens!
07:58Well, our next experiment is a big challenge
08:01So we'll see if you change your minds
08:02Let's go, experimenters!
08:11Off we go for another adventure
08:14Nina said something about a big challenge
08:16Hey! We're still in the science centre!
08:19There's the skeleton on the bicycle
08:22And there's the giant piano that you can play with your feet
08:26I had to find a big place for your big challenge
08:30And the science centre is perfect!
08:32Look over here
08:35Look! Look! It's me!
08:37That's a picture of me!
08:39Oh! And look! There's you, Belle!
08:41And Ollie!
08:42And Luke!
08:43And Felix!
08:45For this experiment we're going to colour in
08:47These giant pictures of my lovely neurons
08:50So let's go!
08:51So we've found out that felt tip pens dry quicker than paint
08:58So just remind me
08:59Which one would you rather use to colour in with?
09:01Felt tip pen!
09:03And I'm going to use this paint
09:06And a nice big brush
09:08So let's get experimenting!
09:10Nina's working really fast with that paint
09:31She's way ahead of the experimenters
09:33How's it coming with those felt tip pens guys?
09:36The pens are too small!
09:38We'll never finish it!
09:40Well, why don't you try these bigger pens?
09:43They might help!
09:55Nina was really fast with that big brush
09:57Right! That's me finished!
09:59How are my experimenters getting on?
10:01It's taking ages, Nina!
10:04Actually, I've been a little bit naughty
10:06I knew that colouring in such big pictures with felt tip pens
10:09Would take a long time
10:11Because the tip on a felt tip pen is really small
10:15Look!
10:16Now felt tips are great for small pictures
10:19And they dry really quickly
10:21But if you want to colour in big areas quickly and easily
10:25It's much better to use paint and a brush
10:28But I wonder if there's a way of making paint dry faster
10:32Let's go back to the lab for one final experiment
10:35We want to know if we can make paint dry any faster
10:41So let's get experimenting!
10:43Yay!
10:45Now we're going to work in pairs for this experiment
10:48So Katie and Tia, you guys can go together
10:50And Lucy, you and I will be a team
10:52OK, we're going to do some more colouring in
10:55Now Katie and Tia, can you please share this beaker of water in front of you?
11:00You can use that to dip your brushes in
11:02And Lucy, you and I are going to use this
11:05It's a special chemical that's added to felt tip pens
11:08To make them dry really quickly
11:10It's safe for us to use for this experiment
11:12But please remember that some liquids are not safe to touch or drink
11:17OK guys, are you ready?
11:19Are you ready?
11:20Yeah!
11:41It's not working very well
11:43No!
11:44My paintbrush isn't getting the paint onto the paper at all
11:49And we're using the same paints
11:51So what do you think might be wrong here guys?
11:54The chemical
11:55Yeah, it's the quick drying liquid
11:57In our beaker it's drying too quickly to use with paint
12:01Water is much better because it keeps the paint wet long enough to move around the paper
12:06So your question was why do we have to wait for our paintings to dry?
12:12And I think we've answered it
12:14We discovered that the colours used in paint would be too dry and powdery to paint without water
12:20Felt tip pens are good for colouring in small pictures
12:23Because they have a special chemical in them that makes them dry really quickly
12:27But if you want to colour in a big area
12:30The water in paint lets you spread the colour quickly and easily
12:34So although we have to wait for the water to dry
12:37It's worth it to make such lovely big colourful pictures
12:41I hope that's answered your question
12:43Thanks Nina! Bye!
12:45Bye!
12:46Bye!
