00:00When I first told them about the song, my sister was like, so, you know, it was like heavy preface.
00:04I'm like, so I wrote a song.
00:06There's a lot of words in it.
00:09And my sister was like, Miranda, respectfully, like, we lived through a swinging scandal.
00:14The F word, that ain't nothing.
00:15That is so true.
00:17You're good.
00:21Virtual reality.
00:23Miranda Hope, Danny and I are so excited to have you in studio.
00:27Obviously, we love you from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, but you have just launched a music career.
00:31And as you know, we're obsessed with F you for that.
00:34It's so good.
00:35How do you feel now that it's like finally out in the world, the video, the song?
00:38I feel like it's being received so well.
00:40Yeah, it's been it's been so fun.
00:42I think it's been obviously a long time coming, you know, behind the scenes and between, you know, the writing
00:50sessions and the recording and then the back and forth of like, you know, getting your final master.
00:54It's been a process, but it feels so good to have it out.
00:56I'm happy that everyone so far.
00:58I mean, it's been pretty split, right?
01:00People are always going to have their opinions.
01:01Some people love it.
01:02Some people hate it.
01:02No matter what people are listening to it.
01:04A stream is a stream.
01:05Yeah.
01:06Wait, are people hating it?
01:08Yeah.
01:09There's I'm like, yeah, there's a lot of mean people.
01:12Well, guess what?
01:12Honestly, I'm like, luckily, I feel like I've had plenty of experience.
01:16I think at this point when it comes to like hate comments and stuff that I'm like, I'm like, you
01:20know what?
01:21Again, stream's a stream.
01:22That's and I was kind of wondering that.
01:23I mean, what because you were telling us before we started recording that singing was always on the vision board
01:29or hope board for you.
01:30Do you feel because of your experience influencing and being a reality star where you have dealt with some of
01:36the hate comments that kind of come for no reason?
01:38Did it feel like now is a perfect time to release the music?
01:41Because you're like, what are people going to say about me that I haven't already heard?
01:43A hundred percent.
01:44Yeah.
01:44Like and the thing is, too, is you see I see other artists that I look up to get hate.
01:49So the thing is, is like when you're a creative of any sort, like that's just going to happen.
01:54And if you are, you know, pursuing your dreams or if you're successful in any regard, there are people are
02:01always going to have something to say, you know, for for better or worse.
02:03And so to me, I'm like, you know what?
02:06I, I think I've I'm pretty callous, I guess, at this point.
02:11Right.
02:11Like throughout all of it that I can let it roll off.
02:14I mean, I'm still human.
02:15Sometimes it's still like gets to me.
02:16But overall, I'm like, you know what?
02:18Like I it's just drives more traffic to the streaming platform.
02:24Beyonce gets hate.
02:24Taylor Swift gets hate.
02:25So you are in great.
02:26Exactly.
02:27That's the thing is I'm like they they all get hate and look at them.
02:30So who you said who are some of your musical icons that you look to?
02:33Oh, my gosh.
02:34I mean, the two of them.
02:36Incredible.
02:37If we're talking like country music space, I, you know, I think going back to my roots, I feel like
02:43anything like 90s country.
02:44Is, you know, like Shania Twain or, you know, Miranda Lambert, Reba.
02:51Like, I think those are, you know, some powerful women that I've always just loved listening to.
02:56And but it's also like not even just like in the country's genre.
02:59I mean, there are so many incredible artists that I look up to and that I feel like are so
03:04inspirational.
03:04And now you are like one of those artists.
03:06Effie for that is so good.
03:08The lyrics are the lyrics are spicy.
03:10They are.
03:11Yeah, they're spicy.
03:13I'm like, who are we not have human these days?
03:15That's the real question.
03:18The song was written with intention of it just being about, you know, like men who've done me dirty.
03:23Obviously, you know, there's a handful of pointed lines about my ex.
03:28And I, you know, I but I keep saying that I'm like anyone else who feels like it could be
03:32pointed at them.
03:33I'm like, if the shoe fits.
03:34There we go.
03:34Well, I feel like wasn't he dancing to it on Instagram?
03:36So he's receiving that.
03:37Oh, yeah.
03:37No, he loves it.
03:38No, he loves it.
03:39I love that he is such a fan.
03:40Did you see his his post about his takeaways from the song?
03:44Yes.
03:44And do you have a response to any of those takeaways?
03:46I think I commented on it and I was just like, yeah, for sure.
03:50Yeah.
03:50Right, right, right, right, right.
03:51Yeah.
03:51A hundred percent.
03:52Yeah.
03:53How would you describe your relationship with Chase today?
03:55It seems like things are good.
03:56Yeah.
03:57I mean, we I think it's I always say it's best case scenario for, you know, being divorced and co
04:03-parenting.
04:05It's not always seamless.
04:07We still, you know, argue and there's ebbs and flows.
04:10But I think that at the end of the day, something I think that Chase and I both pride ourselves
04:16on is the fact that we always put our kids first.
04:19And so even when there are, you know, those ebbs and flows and those those lows, our number one priority
04:25is are the kids and being able to have the type of relationship where we can still have a family
04:29dynamic.
04:30And like, we still consider ourselves and refer to ourselves as a family.
04:33Like, we're still a family.
04:35It just looks different.
04:36And, you know, you have two homes.
04:38Yeah.
04:38Well, you you hear sometimes, too, where it is that when the couple chooses to separate, it actually makes the
04:43relationship better.
04:44Oh, so much better.
04:46Where you can be like, I don't have these expectations of you.
04:49And we can just kind of like level together in a very different way that helps you both and the
04:53kids.
04:54Right.
04:54And also, like, I have my own space.
04:55Like, we don't live together.
04:56So we're not around each other 24-7.
04:59Contrary to what people think online.
05:02So I think like that component.
05:04And then, yeah, like, I don't have expectations for him to be a partner.
05:08Like, I expect him to be the teammate.
05:10Yeah.
05:11And, you know, but besides that, it's just like our relationship just, you know, took a different form.
05:16And I think that we're both so much better for it.
05:18Did you give him an early listen of FU for that?
05:21Or did he hear it when everyone else heard it?
05:22No, I sent him the demo.
05:24Like, while I was like, like, while I was on the trip that I recorded it.
05:27And the original demo.
05:29And he sent me a picture back of him crying.
05:33But not because his feelings were.
05:34Because he was just proud.
05:35Oh, my God.
05:36Wait, that is really sweet.
05:37I know.
05:37It was sweet.
05:38Is there a world where y'all would ever get back to it?
05:40No.
05:40No.
05:40Okay.
05:41I'm like, no.
05:42You want me to slap him for you?
05:43I'm like, shut my ass down.
05:44I don't know.
05:45It's so funny because people are always like, oh, but what if?
05:48And I'm like, yeah.
05:49No, thank you.
05:50You're like, listen to the song.
05:51No, they're like, cue up your heart.
05:53How long did it take to make the song?
05:54Like, writing it and, you know, recording it, all that?
05:57So, we wrote it in one session.
05:58Wow.
05:59So, it was an hour and a half, maybe.
06:01Oh, my God.
06:01And I think a lot of people think, like, the writing process takes so long.
06:05It's like the recording.
06:06The back and forth of recording.
06:07Because, I mean, you'll record.
06:08But then whether you, you know, you get a version and then you send it back for, like, more mixing.
06:13Or, you know, if you don't like this part of it or that part of it.
06:17And then, like, background vocals, all of that.
06:20So, that's the longer process, I would say.
06:22But as far as, like, the writing.
06:23Like, I just did a session the other day and we wrote a song.
06:26And, again, I was going to say, is an album being born?
06:30Hopefully.
06:30Okay.
06:31Hopefully.
06:31That's kind of like the direction.
06:32At least an EP.
06:33EP, maybe.
06:33Yeah.
06:34Okay.
06:34That's exciting.
06:35That's really cool.
06:35And I do love it.
06:36It feels like all of your friends have been very supportive of you, too.
06:38Yes.
06:39That's amazing.
06:39Oh, all my friends have been so, so.
06:40Even, like, my very Mormon family have been very supportive.
06:43Okay, I love that you're very Mormon family.
06:45Because, like, the music video was, like, sexy and fond.
06:47Yeah.
06:47Yeah.
06:48Yeah.
06:48Yeah.
06:49No, they were super supportive.
06:51When I first told them about the song, my sister was, like, so, you know, it was, like, heavy preface.
06:55I'm, like, so, I wrote a song.
06:57There's a lot of words in it.
06:59Yeah.
07:00And my sister was, like, Miranda respectfully, like, we lived through a swinging scandal.
07:05Oh.
07:05That F word, that ain't nothing.
07:07That is so true.
07:08You're good.
07:09Wait, speaking of being supportive, too.
07:11Someone that we all love.
07:12We love that Layla is owning her truth and being so open about who she is and who she loves.
07:17How excited are you for that?
07:18I cried when she told me.
07:19Yeah.
07:20I was so happy for her.
07:21And I honestly, she was, like, did you see it coming?
07:23Because some people are, like, oh, like, yeah, I can see.
07:25And I guess in hindsight, I'm, like, okay.
07:28But, like, I felt very, like, taken back by it.
07:30Yeah.
07:31But just, like, as she opened up about it and, like, spoke to me about it, I was, like,
07:36it just, you could just see her, like, oozing, just, like, relief, confidence.
07:41Like, she was just glowing.
07:42And I'm just so, so, so happy for her.
07:44That has to be such a, I mean, like, just to come out in general, but especially, you know,
07:49So publicly.
07:50Yeah, publicly and with the Mormon faith and everything like that.
07:53There's a lot of levels to it.
07:54A lot.
07:54Where it could have maybe been easier for her just to keep that all bottled down, but
07:59that she chose herself.
08:00A hundred percent.
08:00And I think that, like, her really coming into her own with being a black woman as well,
08:04I think that was kind of, like, a step one in, like, her hair journey and just, like,
08:10you know, feeling more like herself, you know, growing up in such a predominantly white area.
08:15I think that was huge for her to kind of, like, start feeling and living, like, more authentically
08:22to her.
08:22Right.
08:23And I think that was a great, like, segue into her being like, you know what?
08:25Actually, like, there's, like, more I want to share.
08:28And so it's just been so beautiful to watch it all unfold over the last, like, year or
08:32two years.
08:33And to do it in such a big way on Jay Shetty's podcast, like, that is so major.
08:36And during Pride Month.
08:38No, I literally said, I'm like, okay, I'm obsessed.
08:40I'm like, and in the month of June, that's what I said when I was like, we were talking about
08:43the other day, I was crying.
08:44I'm like, and in the month of June.
08:45It's so beautiful.
08:46Going out with a bang.
08:47Literally, yes.
08:49It makes us so happy.
08:50I know.
08:51I love just seeing all the people that we love thriving.
08:53I know.
08:54It's exciting.
08:55Yeah.
08:55No, it's been so fun.
08:57And seeing, like, all of, you know, my other castmates doing their thing and watching,
09:00like, Whitney do all, you know, her stuff.
09:02And it's been so fun.
09:04Well, watching Whitney do Broadway.
09:07Yes.
09:07Is it enticing you?
09:08Because we are in New York and you are singing.
09:10Yes.
09:11Hello.
09:12I would, I mean, never say never.
09:14I mean, I, like, I grew up doing, like, more, like, musical type stuff.
09:19And so, you know, maybe at some point, I think for me with music, though, I love to sing,
09:25but, like, writing is, like, the part I'm the most passionate about, I would say.
09:31I think, like, especially because I'm, I mean, you kind of get out, see on the show a little
09:34bit where, you know, I've come out of my shell more so as time has gone on, but I have
09:40a
09:41harder time opening up.
09:42And I think even though, like, I've definitely evolved a lot and I'm a lot more comfortable
09:48doing that, I think when it comes to, like, music, it's just a way easier way for me to
09:53do that, for me to be vulnerable and, you know, to put it on paper and to, like, put it
09:58into
09:58words lyrically, I think is something that I've always found, like, very therapeutic
10:02since I was really young.
10:03And so, I think that to me is, even though I think doing, like, Broadway and stuff again,
10:08like, I would never say never, but I feel like the creating of the music is, like, a
10:13huge component of why I love it.
10:14What was the first song you ever wrote?
10:16Was it F you for that or do you have tracks in the vault?
10:19I have, like, I had this little purple, I need to go look for it at my mom's house.
10:23It's a fuzzy little purple journal.
10:24Oh my gosh.
10:25And I would write songs in it all the time as a kid.
10:27And I'm, like, I want to, like, I want to find it because I'm, like, it would be hilarious
10:32to, like, actually make a song, like, just for funsies, like, a juicy little, like, to
10:36actually, like, record one of them.
10:37Have your kids listened to the song yet?
10:40I mean, okay.
10:40And what do they think?
10:41Yeah.
10:41Oh, they love it.
10:42Oh, that's so fun.
10:42I actually just recorded a clean version while I was in Nashville.
10:45Oh, amazing.
10:45Okay.
10:46So, there's a radio edit version.
10:48A Mormon version.
10:49A Mormon version.
10:50I keep calling it the kid's bop version.
10:53And yeah, so that'll be going.
10:54That is so cute.
10:55And I know because you said the writing part of it is what really speaks to your soul more.
11:00But would you want to, like, do a little tour or live performances here and there of your
11:04music?
11:04Yeah, I think so.
11:05Like, you know, we've definitely talked about it.
11:07And so, it's something I'm open to.
11:09Obviously, like, when it comes to being, like, a touring musician, there's, like, there's
11:14different levels to it.
11:15But it's obviously very much a lifestyle.
11:17And, like, as a single mom, I'm like, but again, like, never say never.
11:21And we'll see.
11:22Is there any?
11:23Because I know F you for that for the people who deserve it.
11:25But maybe there could be some fun new people to just F.
11:29Are there any?
11:29Like, are we in the mood to date?
11:31Yeah, just F.
11:32I'm like, absolutely.
11:34You need some writing material.
11:34It's so true.
11:35Yes.
11:36How are you going to have material if you're not dating?
11:39What are we dating?
11:40You're like, real recognizes real.
11:42So, yeah, no, I actually more recently started dating again.
11:46I, like, went, like, a whole year without, like, dating really at all.
11:48It probably felt so good.
11:49And so, no, I'm like, and then I start dating.
11:52I'm like, oh, that's why.
11:53Yeah.
11:54Actually, that's why I didn't date.
11:55No, honestly, it's been fun.
11:56Like, it's been fun.
11:57And, like, just, you know, kind of putting myself back out there more.
12:01And I don't really ever, like, meet people in Utah.
12:04I'm like, I just, call me crazy.
12:05But I'm like, I don't feel like my person's in Utah.
12:07Do you, where do you, where do you typically meet guys?
12:10Is it through apps, online, et cetera, mutuals?
12:13Maybe, like, I've had, like, some DM me, maybe.
12:15But besides that, like, I don't do any, like, apps or anything like that.
12:18It's mostly just, like, through either, like, Instagram or, um, I've met, like, a handful
12:26of people from just, like, different events.
12:28Okay.
12:28Like, just, like, yeah.
12:30Just, like, different events that I go to.
12:31Is it tough to date famous now?
12:34Is, like, do you have to, are there more considerations you take just because you don't know if people's
12:38hearts are in the right places?
12:39Yeah.
12:40I think that's, yeah, it's hard because there's a fine line where I'm, like, I don't think
12:43it's fair to assume that people are using it.
12:46Because I'm, like, not everybody has negative intentions, right?
12:48So, I'm, like, there's, there's that where I'm, like, I don't want to assume that because,
12:53you know, obviously, I want to assume the best in people.
12:55Yeah.
12:56But I'm a little jaded, too, I guess.
12:57I guess, like, from, you know, being burned in certain circumstances.
13:02And so, I think, yeah, that's definitely a concern.
13:04Um, but, you know, I think, and then also you add the added layer of being a single mom.
13:11Yeah.
13:12And, like, is, like, he ready to be a step-parent?
13:15That's cute.
13:15I don't know.
13:15You know, I'm, like, there's just a lot of layers that make it harder to date now.
13:19Because it's, like, you're not looking for your partner, you're looking for someone to
13:22join your unit.
13:23Yeah.
13:23Which is such a different ballgame.
13:24Yes.
13:25What was the best thing, taking a year off of dating, what was the best thing you learned
13:29about yourself?
13:29Because I feel like it probably was a time of, like, self-discovery and everything, too.
13:32Oh, my gosh.
13:33I feel like I changed, like, so much as a person.
13:37I just think that, like, I think everybody needs to have an extended period of time that's,
13:42like, their, like, hermit phase.
13:44Where it's just, like, that solitude is, it just, nothing, like, helps you know, get
13:52to know and understand yourself better than, I think, having that alone time with yourself.
13:57And I think, I don't, I just really learned to, like, love being with myself and, like,
14:04in my own head.
14:05And I, like, I'm okay sitting with myself.
14:08And I'm, like, oh, like, I like who I am.
14:10And I think just, like, coming into that, I think, has really, like, prepped me for dating.
14:14Like, I'm very, I think the last time I was dating, I was 18.
14:17Wow.
14:17Like, I got engaged when I was 19.
14:18Wow.
14:18And then got divorced.
14:19How old are you now?
14:2029.
14:21Oh, my gosh.
14:22Girl, it sounded good.
14:23I know.
14:24Literally, it is my sounded good.
14:25I know.
14:26That's crazy.
14:26And then I had a boyfriend after my divorce for a while.
14:28And then when we broke up, I, like, didn't date at all until more recently.
14:33I kind of like that your break from dating converged with your journey on The Secret Lives
14:38of Mormon Lives.
14:38Because I know reality TV isn't easy, but in a way, it, like, forces you to have these
14:42tough conversations that you might not have if there weren't cameras in front of your
14:46face.
14:47I agree.
14:47I think that's something I, like, have said so many times where I'm, like, it is truly
14:52exposure therapy where, you know, I think reality TV can really make or break you.
14:57I think, obviously, that's up to you.
14:58But I think, for me, yeah, what other circumstances are you going to be put in positions where you
15:05are encouraged to have these confrontational conversations?
15:09And I think as somebody who did not like confrontation, and I'm, like, I was very, like,
15:15pick and choose my battles.
15:15Like, something had to really, like, bother me for me to say something about it.
15:18And now I'm, like, no, I didn't like that.
15:21Like, I truly, like, don't have, I don't feel anxious about it.
15:24I just, it's been so fascinating, which is another thing, I think, in the year of, like,
15:28not dating and, like, really focusing on myself, I think also having that, those experiences
15:33with filming have genuinely been, like, so oddly therapeutic.
15:37I love that.
15:38Before you decided to sign on to Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, did you kind of see it as
15:43potential to leverage a singing career?
15:47Yes and no.
15:48I think maybe it was kind of a thought that I had, but I also, like, I didn't know what
15:52life would be like after I started.
15:54Like, I think I was very, I mean, I didn't sign my contract until the day before we started
15:57filming because I was so on the fence about doing it at all.
16:00And so I think I was just so focused on trying to, like, get out of the woods with all
16:07of the,
16:07like, swinging conversation of it all and, like, worried about how that was going to go
16:11that I, I didn't really give much else a thought really.
16:16But I think once I was, like, a season or two in, I think I was like, oh, okay, there
16:21are a lot of, like, doors that open up and that, you know, it felt more, like, realistic
16:26to be able to, like, chase that.
16:28Also because, like, you have a good head on your shoulders and you know, like, what you're
16:31doing and the story you want to tell and everything with it, too, which is really commendable.
16:37Yeah.
16:37Yeah.
16:38I think that as, you know, like I said, over this last year, I think just reaching a certain
16:44level of confidence within myself and, and who I am, I think it definitely is more reassuring
16:51going into pursuing new things and a lot less, I feel a lot less fearful about it.
16:54I love it.
16:55You found your voice and you're singing with it.
16:56That's right.
16:57That's right.
16:58That's right.
16:58Miranda, thank you so much for stopping by.
17:00And we need the EP.
17:02Yes.
17:02Immediately.
17:03Stay tuned.
17:03And then you're going to come back to your performance for us.
17:05Absolutely.
17:06Oh my gosh.
17:06Say less.
17:07I'll be there.
17:08Thank you so much, guys.
