00:19At this hour we got a life to Venezuela, where rescue efforts continue after back-to-back
00:24earthquakes measured in 7.2 and 7.5 affected the country.
00:28Our correspondent in La Guaira, Luis Alberto Matos, continues to keep us updated from Los Corales neighborhood.
00:35Go ahead, Luis.
00:40Good morning, Sophie. Good morning to our audience.
00:43As you were saying, we continue to be deployed here in La Guaira to continue informing our audience and the
00:49people of the world the situation here on the ground.
00:52As we were saying, this is a new dawn here. It's the ninth day since the back-to-back earthquake
00:57that hit on June 24th, last Wednesday, and rescue operations continue.
01:02That first phase of search and rescue is still ongoing, and it will not stop as announced by the authorities
01:09about the different rescue brigades.
01:10As long as there is one spot where there is a chance of life, the rescue work will continue.
01:16Alongside this rescue work is the second phase that already began, which is the comprehensive attention to all the victims.
01:22The different authorities of the Bolivar nation have established numerous temporary camps where people that have lost their homes are
01:29currently there staying,
01:30where they are receiving all the necessary attention. They are also receiving help in terms of health services, they are
01:37receiving in terms of physical health,
01:39but they are also receiving psychological support after experiencing this traumatic event.
01:45Especially special attention is being taken with the vulnerable sectors of the population, like, for example, the early temporary camp
01:55was established
01:56precisely for a special, a dedicated attention for this specific vulnerable sector of the elderly, where they have all the
02:03special care and special treatment that might be necessary.
02:07The authorities were traveling around the affected area here of La Guayra, seeing the elderly that were left alone due
02:13to the tragedy that they lost their families.
02:15And the same can be said about children. There's also special attention being given to the children,
02:20which is, without a doubt, one of the most impacted sectors of society following the back-to-back earthquakes on
02:27June 24th.
02:29Children have been left orphaned, children are currently alone, children that they don't know where their parents are or their
02:34League of Guardians are
02:35as of now due to the tragedy that occurred over nine days ago right now.
02:42So all this is taking place. This is part of the second phase we're saying to provide a comprehensive attention
02:47for all the victims of these back-to-back earthquakes.
02:52Now, something that is being planned, the preparations are underway is the next phase, which will be the reconstruction, the
02:59recovery phase of how Venezuela would come out of this.
03:03And one of the clear objectives is housing, to provide adequate housing for the people that lost their homes, that
03:09lost their place where they live, their families and their loved ones.
03:12And for that reason, the acting president of the country, Deos Rodriguez, announced in a presser yesterday that an initial
03:20$200 million fund was allocated for that purpose of rebuilding.
03:24In that presser, also, the acting president thanked all the international support, as we have seen throughout this coverage,
03:31on the ground of the aftermath of what happened after the earthquakes, we have seen the international support that Venezuela
03:37has received.
03:38Over 140 countries provided support to Venezuela and are currently providing support to Venezuela with the deployment of rescue brigades
03:46that are currently doing their job trying to save as many lives as possible.
03:49Of course, as days go by, we are already on the ninth day, the chances of survival are slim, but
03:54hope is the last thing that is lost, and that's why people, the rescue teams, both from Venezuela and from
04:00the international brigades,
04:01continue to work hard around the clock to be able to reach those places where there's still hope of people
04:07who are still alive, because in some cases the people were trapped in areas where they had access to food
04:13or water,
04:13so they have a chance to still be alive. So that's what the first workers are currently working on. During
04:20the day, we're going to be wandering around,
04:22we're going to be visiting some of the temporary camps to be able to learn firsthand of the experience of
04:27the victims and to be able to exchange with them and see how disease has been developing.
04:31So stay tuned for that. We go back to you now, Sophie.
04:39Thank you, Luis. Well, that was Luis Alberto Matos, our colleague from La Guayra State in Venezuela,
04:45who keeps informing us about the day-to-day progress of the search and rescue efforts currently going on in
04:51the state.
04:52Now we'll continue from the south with more information about the Middle East.
