One of Western Australia's last surviving World War Two veterans has celebrated his 104th birthday in the state's southwest. Brian Walley’s life story is one of perseverance surviving a plane crash into the north sea and being held as a prisoner of war in Germany.

00:11Two of them got washed away, never saw them again. Three of us got back into the dinghy.
00:19One died that night, the next one died the next afternoon.
00:24Rescued by German soldiers, he was held as a prisoner of war for more than three years.

00:55After that, dying's never worried me. I've just lived a day at a time.
01:02Some days are good, and other days are not for good.
01:06But every day is a bonus. And I'm still going.
01:11He's not the only family member to pass 100.
01:13His sister passed away when she was 104. His other sister is 97.
01:20Yeah.
01:21So, yeah, we're hoping we've got the same genes.
