00:33The National Redress Scheme was set up in response to the Royal Commission
00:36into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse, allowing victims to apply for financial compensation
00:41and an acknowledgement from institutions of what they suffered as children.
00:46The scheme faces a backlog of about 30,000 cases.
00:50It's processing almost 1,000 applications a month, an increase on last year,
00:54but still well short of what's required to clear the backlog before the scheme closes in 2028.
01:00I can't see any way that the scheme can actually meet the requirements for which it was set up.
01:06Green Senator David Shoebridge wants the scheme extended to ensure nobody misses out.
01:11All of those vulnerable survivors, many of them have finally worked up the courage
