Dozens of social workers have walked off the job to protest the state government's decision to axe a professional registration scheme. South Australia invested millions of dollars establishing the reform and would have been the first state to make social work a registered occupation.

00:06Striking after the axing of a registration scheme,
00:09the government says would leave social workers out of pocket.
00:13A state only model that sees a huge cost being imposed upon social workers
00:18doesn't make sense particularly at this time.
00:20But to protesters, registration would protect both their profession and the public.
00:25If you are going to see a social worker for important services
00:29like your child needs therapy,
00:30you would want to know that the person doing that
00:33is a qualified, regulated social worker who's accountable for their practice.
00:38We've got this cost of living argument which makes no sense.
00:41Yes, it's tough, but the answer to that is make it a cheaper registration scheme.
00:44The opposition launching a petition calling on Labor to reverse its decision.
00:49This gives the community the opportunity to have their voices heard
00:53and to show this government that they do not support their shock decision
00:57to walk away from this scheme.
00:58But the Minister for Child Protection shows no sign of budging,
01:02citing a different union's support for scrapping the scheme.
01:06It became very clear to me and the other members of the Cabinet
01:09that there was a strong divergence of views, particularly amongst social workers on this issue.
01:13The Health Services Union says about 80% of the state's workforce supports registration.
01:19The government disputes this.
01:21Several community organisations have backed the government,
01:24providing statements saying the scheme would cause staff retention and recruitment issues.
01:30There were workforce implications, no doubt,
01:33because there are so many people doing the role of social work when they should not be.
01:38The government says it's investing in lifting standards and professional development.
