00:01The migratory seabird was found here at Bennett's Beach at Hawks Nest on the New South Wales mid-north coast.
00:07A member of the public alerted authorities when they found the bird and they thought it looked ill.
00:12The New South Wales chief vet said it's a giant patrol bird which normally doesn't make land unless it's sick.
00:19Speaking to people who've been wandering the beach this afternoon, they're a bit concerned by the news that bird flu
00:25has arrived here in New South Wales.
00:27One man was concerned about the flown effects it could have for New South Wales and the chicken industry.
00:33Another person who was visiting the area said they'd received a message from a relative warning them not to pick
00:38up any sick or dead birds while they were visiting here at Hawks Nest.
00:43Now the New South Wales government says surveillance here at Hawks Nest has increased along with other high risk areas
00:49of New South Wales.
00:50But at this stage it does believe it is an isolated incident.
00:54I reiterate that there is no detection in our poultry or agricultural systems.
00:58What I can say is that we have been preparing for the H5 bird flu incursion into Australia should it
01:04occur.
01:05We have been seeing what it has done overseas.
01:08We also have learnt from H7 outbreaks that we've had in Australia in recent years.
01:14In our preparedness we have been working with the poultry and the egg industries to do everything that we can
01:19do to mitigate against any incursions in our agricultural systems.
01:23Testing is now underway to confirm what strain of avian influenza this bird does have.
01:29Now if it comes back as the H5N1 strain it will be the sixth confirmed case in Australia.
01:35The first in New South Wales.
01:37There have already been four confirmed cases in Western Australia and one in South Australia.
01:42Do you think it will be the first confirmed case in Western Australia?
01:42After a following once you replied
01:43We are one of the big 76ers and the American citizens in South Wales.
01:43And you are the most overweight of us.
