Territorians have celebrated 48 years of self-government in style, with hundreds of tonnes of fireworks let off around the NT. Thousands gathered at Darwin's iconic Mindil Beach for the main display, while others marked the occasion with personal explosives. Firefighters and paramedics reported a quieter than usual cracker night, but it wasn't without incident.

00:02It's the only place and the only night in Australia where it's legal to let off fireworks
00:08without a permit.
00:09And Territorians and visitors alike made the most of the opportunity.
00:13It's been an experience, that's for sure.
00:16First time at Territory Day, yep.
00:18So, the best thing ever.
00:20This is incredible.
00:22With public displays across the NT, including at Darwin's Mindal Beach, families made the
00:27most of the day.
00:28It's kind of cool that everyone is celebrating the Territory Day and everyone is being together.
00:34With plenty of chaos as well.
00:40Unpredictable.
00:41You don't know what's going to happen.
00:42But Territory Day isn't time for everyone to celebrate.
00:45Firefighters say the days after the fireworks are some of the busiest of their year.
00:50We're probably going to be responding to a few fires that will still carry on from these
00:53fireworks tonight for the next couple of days, especially with the school holidays on as
00:57well.
00:58So hopefully kids won't play with the fireworks while mum and dad are at work.
01:01After a bit of unseasonal rain in the top end in the evening, bushfire's NT say despite
01:06a few small fires, they weren't as flat out as they often are on the night itself.
01:10But that could change in the coming days.
01:13We'll see a cooler, drier front coming in.
01:16That will increase that risk profile of bushfire.
01:19Territory Day often keeps the NT's paramedics busy, but they say no one was badly injured
01:25at this year's celebrations.
01:26We had a relatively easy night with the events that we had to respond to.
01:30There was only six overall in the Territory.
01:32We had one in Alice Springs, which was a child, four years of age, minor facial injuries.
01:38Despite the relatively low injury toll, there were plenty of near misses.
01:42Cullen Bay resident Patricia Brooks says it was lucky no one was hurt when a cracker hit
01:48a car filled with explosives.
01:50We did see the dad open one of the passenger doors.
01:52He grabbed the esky and then everyone stepped away from it and off it went.
01:56It burned very brightly.
01:58We heard a number of explosions.
01:59I think that would have been the fuel tank going up.
02:02Unfortunately, a burnt out car wasn't the only thing left to clean up this morning.
02:06But with the government not planning to change Territory Day's relaxed firework rules, celebrations
02:11are set to look similar for the years to come.
02:14Loving each other, being there for each other and just being one.
02:20That's what Territory is all about for me.
02:22A message of Territory pride to cap off a unique Territory night.
