00:00Bauk, in studio, you can watch our show now, it's one thing that's different from when
00:06Greg worked here, and there's proof that he's actually sitting here between Bulldog and
00:12me, I'm sure we'll get you on camera, if we haven't already done so.
00:17Is Twitch the thing that people play video games on and you watch?
00:21Switch.
00:22Twitch, the Twitch.
00:24What is this, Switch or Twitch?
00:26Twitch.
00:26Okay.
00:27I don't know what the whole Switch is.
00:28I'm not allowed on Switch.
00:30I think of it as YouTube.
00:32Yeah, we're on YouTube.
00:34There it is.
00:35Wow, look at us.
00:36Oh, okay.
00:36There you are.
00:37Oh, this is very meta.
00:38Yeah.
00:39There's a delay, though.
00:41Yeah, there is.
00:41So, I could be dead right now.
00:44Like, it could happen, but you won't know.
00:46For another seven seconds?
00:48Yeah.
00:48I'll know, because I'm going to be the one that kills you.
00:51There are so many.
00:52That's what the one-eyed woman told me.
00:54We're going to have to make sure to talk about this book.
00:56Yeah, note to self, don't swear.
01:00There are so many references that come to my mind whenever I'm around you.
01:05Like, you're saying that about you could be dead right now.
01:07It reminds me of, it's tonight the night we get a baseball game that never ends.
01:10Yes.
01:12That's not a bad segue to the book.
01:15Yes.
01:15I think that's correct.
01:17All right.
01:18So, what's going on here?
01:19I'm holding up the book.
01:20Oh, okay.
01:21Good.
01:21For the Switch.
01:23I wrote a book 12 years ago, and I just kind of rushed into it.
01:27I always wanted to write, and it just kind of consumed me, and I always wanted to do it.
01:30And my plan was to just write.
01:32I was like, hey, what's better than AM radio?
01:34I know.
01:34A pen and paper.
01:36Hey, watch it.
01:37My next move is a blacksmith.
01:40Yes.
01:40Right.
01:42Start putting shoes on horses.
01:43Right.
01:44Good plan, Greg.
01:44Hey, horses are good.
01:46New York City, the union won't let you take horses away.
01:50I have been writing a bunch of stuff, and this kind of, I wrote the first three pages
01:55of this book, Unbelievable, right there in the control room while I was supposed to be
02:00answering phones.
02:01And I just popped in my head.
02:03I wrote them down, and things just got in the way.
02:06Other stuff came up.
02:07I was always doing something stupid.
02:09Then about a year and a half, that story kind of came back itching at me.
02:13And it just flowed out of me.
02:16I sat down one day, and I was like, I remember that.
02:18I'll try that.
02:19And that's kind of how it is for me.
02:21I have pages.
02:22I have like 50 Word documents, and then I'll open something up, and if it hits me, it hits
02:26me, and this thing hits me.
02:26Do you remember how the idea, what was happening in here that led to your thinking of what started
02:34this?
02:34So, yeah.
02:35And if you will allow, I'll tell you, Unbelievable is the story.
02:39It's going to be about me.
02:40It's the story of two failed talk show hosts.
02:43Who just ruined this one man's life.
02:46No, no.
02:47Scratch that switch.
02:48Unbelievable.
02:49That's totally believable.
02:51Terrible title.
02:52But this one's unbelievable.
02:53You laughed and I made you come back once.
02:55I mean, that happened.
02:56Yes.
02:56The sequel.
02:56I didn't want that.
02:58The sequel is believable.
03:00That's right.
03:01Oh, God.
03:02When's our out?
03:0322?
03:05Okay, so.
03:05Oh, I can coast for a little.
03:06Settle in.
03:0717 minutes of this crap.
03:09Take your time.
03:10Where's match game?
03:11We've got time.
03:12Unbelievable is the story of a perfect basketball game played.
03:16There's a lot more involved in it than just that.
03:19It was played in 1972 in Moscow, Idaho during a snowstorm.
03:23So, if you're used to me being a complete idiot that just spews nonsense, that writes
03:28six-page bachelor recaps and a book about a guy who can't stop drinking, this is going
03:33to be a little bit of departure.
03:34Again, about me.
03:35This is all.
03:36I did look great at you when I said that.
03:40Tough love.
03:40A departure is so good.
03:43It's going to be a bit of a departure from that because this is just a story and there's
03:46not a single swear word in the entire book.
03:48Like, it really, like, I tried to tell a story and that took a lot of work, a lot of
03:52versions.
03:53For some reason, the three pages that I wrote are almost untouched.
03:56That just kind of stuck with me.
03:57And to answer your question, Mike, the Greg Buck character kind of plays, there's an announcer
04:01in this that makes that game come to life.
04:03It would have not been a thing if not for the announcer in the story, whose name is not
04:08Greg Buck in the book.
04:09His name is Bob Bolt, but he kind of, like, is the crux of the perfect game.
04:15There's a picture of the box score from this game on the back of the book, and it's not
04:21giving too much away.
04:22No, no.
04:22I wouldn't have put it on the cover.
04:23Resort to that.
04:24Yes, yeah.
04:25Somebody scores 100 points and doesn't miss.
04:28100 points without missing a shot.
04:29There's other stats beyond that that kind of make it, you know, quote, unquote, unbelievable.
04:34You said that word three times in the first hour.
04:36I was just listening, and, like, you're going to hate that word pretty soon because you're
04:40just going to notice.
04:40I hear that word all the time.
04:42I say it, and I was like, oh, God, I'm just always selling.
04:45Like, I can't stand it.
04:46Well, whenever I hear that word on a broadcast, however, it usually rankles me.
04:52Yeah.
04:52Because almost never is the thing actually not believable.
04:56Yes.
04:57When an announcer says, you know, somebody makes a 30-foot shot, I could believe that
05:01that was done.
05:02That's a big reason why it's called that.
05:04That box score does seem hard to believe.
05:06It's a little hard to believe.
05:08But, so...
05:09So this is a...
05:10Wait.
05:10Go ahead.
05:11This is a real game?
05:12No, no.
05:12This is all fiction.
05:13You made...
05:13Okay.
05:13So the box...
05:14Okay, I'm sorry.
05:15Okay.
05:15And the reason for...
05:16Just making sure.
05:17I thought you, like...
05:17Nope.
05:18For a second, someone in our audience, being an idiot like I am, but I thought you based
05:22all this around this actual game and made up the rest.
05:25That's going to be a big lift for me is to make people aware of the fact that this is
05:29a non-fiction...
05:30Or this is a fiction book.
05:31Yeah.
05:31It doesn't help that non-fiction means not, not true.
05:34It's just a made-up story.
05:36Kind of like we all love sports.
05:39We kicked a lot of people out of a lot of Halls of Fame.
05:41Did we ever.
05:42And I just...
05:43Part of the thing that brought this about was as a little kid, you learn about sports.
05:47You start to get into sports a little bit.
05:49So you know, like, the big names.
05:50You know, like, your Wayne Gretzky's and your Babe Ruth's.
05:51I remember learning about Babe Ruth, and he was the best baseball player of all time.
05:54Then I started playing baseball, and I figured out, oh, if you don't strike out, it's not...
05:59You know, you don't get a hit.
05:59Like, percentages came up.
06:01And then I read that Babe Ruth...
06:02Like, around the time I was, like, eight or so, I read that Babe Ruth's batting average was,
06:06like, 300.
06:06And I was like, what is this crap?
06:08Like, I thought he was the best baseball player of all time.
06:10It should have been, like, 500.
06:11Yeah.
06:12Well, I mean, like, no, 1,000.
06:13Like, I heard there was that phrase, if you knock something over, oh, you're batting 1,000
06:16there.
06:16Like, I thought batting 1,000 was possible, and that just kind of stuck in my craw.
06:21And all of these games played through all the years and all of these sports, was there
06:25ever a perfect game played?
06:26That's why I created this one with some stories around it.
06:30You have an event tomorrow where you're introducing yourself...
06:34Yes.
06:34...to your fans and readers.
06:36Yeah, tell me about, what is this event going to be like?
06:39What can people attending look forward to?
06:41The U.S. playing a soccer game against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
06:45I mean, it's at Fatty Wolitzer, 908 Niagara Falls Boulevard, in the Wolitzer building.
06:51It's near my house.
06:52It's my bar.
06:53I have a mug there.
06:54There's going to be other events.
06:55This is the kickoff event.
06:56But Teresa's my friend.
06:58She runs the place.
06:59It seemed like a great place to do it.
07:01They have sports there, so when it's only my parents, there'll be a game going on.
07:05It will not be a complete failure.
07:07That kind of deal.
07:08I am expecting some people there.
07:09You can sit outside.
07:11Yes.
07:11Yeah, there's a nice patio.
07:12It's a great location.
07:14There's platters, ice cream there.
07:15So it's got a lot going in the location.
07:18But basically, it's just a wide open space.
07:19I have a table set up.
07:21I'm going to be selling and signing books.
07:22And I can't wait to talk to people about it and stuff like that.
07:25It starts at 6 o'clock.
07:26Are you going to be reading from this book?
07:28So that might be a problem because it is just a public bar.
07:31This isn't a closed event.
07:32It's there.
07:33I would be happy to do that.
07:34I will tell you this.
07:35If you like stories but don't like reading, I have completed the audio version of it.
07:41The Greg Buck voice, there was a question to me.
07:44I'm sorry I'm manipulating your question.
07:45But there's a question to me on whether or not to use the Greg Buck voice because people that are
07:51listening to it, it's kind of jarring.
07:53Mike did it earlier.
07:54So it's like, a long fly ball.
07:56So that's the voice I use.
07:58An audio book, that would be challenging.
08:00It's there.
08:02So I did some research on this because I do not listen to books.
08:05I didn't even know how to read.
08:06Like, how do you do it?
08:07Do you just read it like a robot or whatever?
08:09There's like split down the middle on people who listen to audio books is half of them hate when you
08:14do voices, half of them like when you do voices.
08:16I just decided to do.
08:17That's really the only character.
08:19But I changed my voice and tone for different characters and stuff like that.
08:22I meant the whole book being read in your voice would be intolerable.
08:26It's my voice that you're hearing right now.
08:28I mostly wanted to know if you're going to read, like, is it going to be before I get there?
08:32Because I'd like to miss it if I could.
08:34Good.
08:34I will.
08:34So I'll just go in the bathroom with the book and read it alone.
08:38That's where I do all my reading anyway.
08:40So, yeah.
08:41So I'm back here in 2008.
08:43Yes.
08:43Greg Buck.
08:44Greg Bauk.
08:45All of it's happening.
08:46All kinds of nostalgia that I feel when it comes to you and see you here.
08:51And that character, is that the right word for it, I think?
08:55Oh, sure.
08:55Greg Buck, yeah.
08:56Greg Buck.
08:57That character still travels, I think.
09:01I mean, I don't know how much new material you do, but every once in a while in my house,
09:06we do a YouTube search for that character's name, and that is a rabbit hole.
09:14That's a couple hours.
09:15A chance to plug gregbauk.com.
09:18That's, like, where you can get the book.
09:19But, like, I have a YouTube page where I've thrown up, like, maybe 50 Greg Buck things that are there.
09:25I kind of had to set them to some kind of video, which was fun and sometimes.
09:28Do you have a favorite?
09:29I mean, like, there's a 15-minute segment of radio that I did with you guys, and it's on the
09:36site there,
09:36and I list it on there as my favorite.
09:39We are kicking people out of the Hall of Fame, and there's a moment where Hockey Hall of Fame and,
09:45boy,
09:45like, I wasn't prepared for this.
09:46A guy dies because he is in an inner tube that floats out into the water, and no one is
09:52able to get him.
09:53He just dies on the water, and they have a charity hockey game for him, and you kicked him out
09:56because only, like, 11,000 people showed up for that charity thing.
10:00Like, that was your reason.
10:00That's real.
10:01That's real.
10:02That really happened.
10:03You kicked him out.
10:03And I always, when I kicked my guy out, I always had a click.
10:08Like, so every day I'd get to the site and figure out how to kick out,
10:11but I couldn't just kick anyone out.
10:12I had to have a clip.
10:13So I kicked out Jack Darragh, who was a pacifist, who there was a big scrum on the ice
10:18where all these guys are fighting, and Jack Darragh wins the fight by refusing to eat
10:22like he, because he's a pacifist, so he wins the fight by, like, a hunger strike.
10:26And, like, that's in, like, but the whole segment is just him not being able to talk
10:31because he's mad at you and just mad at me for being so stupid.
10:35And it's, I love that segment of radio so much.
10:40Gregbauch.com, B-A-U-C-H.
10:42Yes, it's the German word for stomach.
10:44I don't know if I ever told you that.
10:47It is.
10:50My Canadian friend John Gall and I went on a road trip to go see Owen play hockey in
10:55Indiana or something.
10:57As he was wont to do.
10:59Yes.
11:00On the overnight, after the, like, the Saturday game, there was a Sunday morning game.
11:04After the Saturday night game, you know, went out for drinks and dinner and whatever,
11:08and we're trying to go to sleep.
11:09And I don't know how it came up, but I ended up at Gregbauch.com.
11:14And the two of us, John might have been 68 at the time, and I'm, whatever, 57.
11:21You know, twin beds side by side in a seedy motel room somewhere in rural Indiana.
11:27Something out of Fargo.
11:28And I started, again, I don't remember what the trigger was, but we got there,
11:32and I'm telling you, we, I had to, he was crying.
11:36He had never, I mean, I don't know that, yeah, you were, you were here when I first met him.
11:42I know John.
11:42I love John, yes.
11:45But we just, I mean, we just had the best time.
11:47Just, I'm just trying to encourage people.
11:49I was, go there, buy the book.
11:52Listen to that stuff if you've never listened to it.
11:54Or even if you have, but haven't listened to it in a long time.
11:57It's so good.
11:59I, I, I love that.
12:01I am very proud of them.
12:02Nothing has gotten me more free beer in my life than, for some reason, that's huge with bartenders,
12:07than Greg Buck.
12:08Like, you know, you're all set.
12:10I mean, it's not, it doesn't happen all the time.
12:12Once a, once a year, I'll get a free beer from Greg Buck.
12:15Name works.
12:15All of it.
12:17I claim that on my taxes.
12:19Did it start with Coco Crisp?
12:22That was a good one.
12:23That was, that was Carolyn's idea.
12:24That's right.
12:25My wife, we were Cleveland baseball fans at the time, and they had an outfielder.
12:31They're the Bisons.
12:31Yep.
12:32Yeah.
12:32And they had an outfielder named Coco Crisp that, you know, that's a crowd pleaser.
12:36Oh, yeah.
12:37And then suddenly we had a baseball game.
12:40Your creation was the Yankees.
12:42The Yankees versus the Serial All-Stars.
12:44Against the Serial All-Stars.
12:45I feel like that's the beginning.
12:46I'm not sure if it's the very first, but maybe.
12:49No.
12:50The first one is on the website, and that's me and Jeremy White making fun of how many commercials
12:53are in the world.
12:54Okay.
12:55Jeremy White is my color guy.
12:56Greg Buck, the only time, the one and only time Greg Buck has had a color guy was Jeremy
13:00White.
13:00But you're not all the way there on the voice on that.
13:02It's more of a Southern twang, I think, if I remember.
13:05And if you want to go like for the deep cut GR fans, there's actually a 13 second clip
13:11that was longer than that.
13:13It's just, it's really not the Greg Buck fan, but it's more of a Yankee.
13:16It's more of a, who's the Yankee broadcaster?
13:18I can't remember.
13:19John Sterling?
13:19No, no, no.
13:20Like early.
13:22Mel Allen?
13:23Yeah, whatever.
13:24It's like him, that style, like foul ball, hit to the first pace line.
13:28Oh, it hit a Yankee fan.
13:30Good.
13:31Like I did that in that voice.
13:33Right.
13:33Well, I can still hear that you and Jer thing.
13:38He puts a voice on too.
13:40Yes.
13:40Oh, yeah.
13:41He does like a Southern thing.
13:42Oh, that's the one that's more of the Southern.
13:44Yeah, that's right.
13:44It's Jeremy saying auto detailing 50 times.
13:47Oh, yeah.
13:47That kills me in that clip.
13:48Watching by Mary's Lemonade for a relaxing treat.
13:51You know, like it just like.
13:52Also, I mean, Art Imitating Life, that is how every game sounds for real.
13:58We didn't have the games.
13:59And like, I remember our beloved GM who is no longer with GR after today, Tim Wenger,
14:06love that bit because it was me making fun of Bills games.
14:09Yes.
14:09Because when I was just trying to listen to it and like, it was like, you know, you love
14:12Murph, but it was like everything was a commercial.
14:14It's not his fault, of course, but.
14:16But it's worse than ever.
14:17Yes.
14:17And the Bills are just one of many teams who sound, every sport.
14:21Everything is.
14:21Like the hydration breaks.
14:22Come on.
14:23Everything is sponsored.
14:24I'm hydrated.
14:26There's a new, it seems to be like a fad right now, sites and apps and games where,
14:31like, for instance, you have hockey, it's called Hockey82-0.com, where you can pick
14:38players somewhat at random and try to build a super team that can go 82-0.
14:43So recently, I wasn't sure of the exact website name and just typed in 82-0 and what comes
14:52up?
14:53Slovakia and Bulgaria.
14:54Oh, yeah.
14:5582-0.
14:56I never thought of that.
14:5782-0 was the score of this women's game.
14:59And that is another all-timer from you.
15:03Speaking of sponsor reads.
15:05Right.
15:06Reardon, Ryerson, Smithson, and Smythe.
15:08For free legal advice, call 1-800-555-LAWW or something like that.
15:12Yes.
15:13And it's like, is it 3-0 or 4-0?
15:17And I do this, I quote you in many circumstances exactly the way you said it.
15:22The goals are coming and you're in the read and then there's the horn, it's perfect.
15:29And you hear the horn again, you stop your read, you hear the horn again, and Greg goes,
15:33OK.
15:35And I just, I love that OK.
15:37I use that OK all the time.
15:39Good.
15:40Like, OK, it's going to be one of those here.
15:42Another one.
15:4382-0.
15:44Where is Bulgaria?
15:46There's a version of that call.
15:48I made three versions of that call.
15:50There's a version of that call that only played once that I don't think it's on the site and
15:53no one knows about it.
15:54The game was 82-0.
15:55And you know that at the time, listen to this, but it's, it cuts in from a commercial
15:59break.
15:59So you have Greg Buck coming in.
16:00He's like, we're back from the break here.
16:02And they're reviewing it again.
16:04And like, you know, he's taking all this time to describe.
16:06The puck might have been behind the goalie.
16:07And there it is.
16:08Yes.
16:09It's not a goal.
16:10Bulgaria stops that one.
16:12Like, so that is not a goal.
16:14Slovakia is going to, you know, like they did not score there.
16:16And then it's just like three seconds later, another 43 to nothing.
16:20So like that, like they took like five minutes to review a goal and a 43 to nothing game.
16:25Let's hope that didn't really happen.
16:26It could have.
16:27As offensive as so much replay.
16:29They did it during the hydration break.
16:33I mean, go on all day.
16:35The field goal on the moon.
16:37Oh yeah.
16:38Jets and dolphins.
16:38Yeah.
16:39Field goal on the moon.
16:40Penner.
16:41Penner.
16:42Penner.
16:43Gives it a vote.
16:44And it's blocked.
16:46It's floating.
16:47Should we just take.
16:48It's floating.
16:48Should we just bring up W or gregbauch.com and play some stuff?
16:51I'm sorry.
16:51No, I love it.
16:52That's fine.
16:53Yeah.
16:53What did you want to talk about?
16:54I have nothing to talk about.
16:54Oh, nothing's really going on, guys.
16:56I'm just hanging out here.
16:57So yes.
16:58Will you write another book?
17:00I'm already writing the next one.
17:02And like part, like I'm supposed to be playing.
17:05Did you start this one before you were born?
17:07Yes, I did.
17:07No, no.
17:08This one started after I had a good idea for one, but it's going to be hard to write.
17:11So I'm like, this book that I just wrote, like I wanted to get it right because I think
17:15the next one has a chance to be like really good.
17:18Like the idea I have is kind of science fiction-y, which is going to be incredibly hard to do.
17:23But so like, this is what I want to do.
17:24I just want to write books that no one reads and watch Pelicans and like, you know, just.
17:29Pelicans.
17:30Yes.
17:30You know, retire in Florida.
17:32The basketball team or the, oh, no, birds.
17:34You're talking about birds.
17:35I don't know.
17:35I have no idea.
17:36Is that still a team?
17:37Yeah.
17:37I think it is.
17:38Yeah.
17:38I don't know.
17:38They're in Vancouver.
17:39He'll look at Zach for confirmation.
17:41I don't know what the hell is going on.
17:42I think it's Grizzlies to New Orleans, isn't that?
17:44Memphis.
17:45Yeah.
17:45No, no.
17:46Yeah.
17:47I have the bug.
17:48I wrote a, I'm sorry.
17:50I'm plugging another book that's not this book.
17:52I wrote a book in between, before this one, it was an autobiography.
17:56It was about being the youngest of seven kids.
17:58And, you know, I'm very proud of it.
18:00It's just not ready.
18:00I tried to sell it.
18:01It needs to be done.
18:03I submitted a short section to it, to a contest and won.
18:06Like, I know there's something there for it, but I have to like polish it out.
18:10There were times, and I know Bulldog would say the very same thing, bent over in laughter
18:15because of you working here.
18:18One time at the convention center at the auto show with Nathan Gerby sitting around where
18:24a pun got started about grocery stores, dogs, dogs and grocery stores.
18:30Wagmans.
18:31Yes.
18:31And then suddenly, and you're not with us, you're here, and suddenly the screen is just
18:36bombarded with more and more and more grocery store dog ideas.
18:40And just, I have to look away.
18:44I just can't, as funny as this is, I just have to look away sometimes.
18:48All right, so the event tomorrow, again, where are we going?
18:53Thaddee's Willitzer, 908 Niagara Falls Boulevard from 6 to 8 tomorrow, which is July 1st, in
18:58case you're listening to this on The Vault.
19:00You missed it.
19:01The book is always available at gregbauch.com.
19:03It's available now.
19:04Audio version coming there soon.
19:05I'll have other events.
19:06Go to gregbauch.com.
19:08So if you've got a version and want to talk to me about it, I'd want to talk to anyone
19:11about it, but you can contact me or whatever through gregbauch.com if you have questions.
19:14I want to listen to it.
19:16Yeah.
19:16Well, I hope so.
19:17That's interesting to me.
19:18Talking to, I told you this last week, Matt Collar read his own, narrated his own book.
19:22It's super interesting.
19:23He talked about how hard it was.
19:24It is, you'll, it's really cool.
19:27I know you're up against the clock.
19:28It adds something when it's the author reading it.
19:31All poor Jim Boughton.
19:32The author reads it.
19:33It adds something.
19:34I just meant from my perspective, it's really like, you would do things differently.
19:37It's just really a crazy process.
19:39I'd love to talk about it more.
19:40Good luck, Greg.
19:41Great having you back.
19:42Thank you for having me.
19:43I appreciate it.
19:43Sorry about everything.
19:44Sorry about everything.
19:45The book is called Unbelievable, and you can meet Greg.
19:47And acquire a copy tomorrow at Fatty Beer in the Wurlitzer Building.
19:52Thank you to No Frills Publishing.
19:54No Frills Publishing.
19:55We talked to Sal earlier about other subjects.
