00:00we'll see about any of that and uh yeah that's about it it'll be steamy and hot for the week
00:05paul heat index around 100 just like the fire of your takes on the sabers good morning how are you
00:12i'm all right how are you good yeah we're gonna get in the 90s this week yeah 90s and heat
00:17it's
00:17gonna be very humid that's uh and when they say it's not the heat it's the humidity they mean
00:22this coming week it's gonna be i heard on ben i heard the dew point's gonna be 71 i don't
00:28really
00:29know i used to know what that meant i forget i don't know but that just means it's gonna be
00:32humid the dew point is 71 i saw on your uh hundred holes of golfing you uh did it in
00:38the pouring rain
00:39we did we did i could have used 90 degrees to dry out it was pretty wet but we had
00:44we had a great
00:44time and uh had a great event all right paul so the the weekend was uh was a busy one
00:49for the sabers
00:50scouting department drafting department and the latest is a report that the sabers are uh maybe
00:56on the doorstep of extending beck malenstein for a six-year contract worth three million that's
01:01elliot freeman reporting that maybe we'll start there are you surprised at all to see that beck
01:05malenstein becomes i think with a six-year deal a core piece right that's a guy that you are building
01:11with for the long term yeah i don't know why i wasn't thinking it but i wasn't thinking he was
01:17gonna get six years and then it's like well why wouldn't you think he's gonna get i mean they like
01:22him a lot and uh so if they have a a figure that they think is going to be a
01:28decent figure for him
01:29and um they certainly you know they've lost two very good penalty killers i mean alex tuck and
01:37greenway are two of the best penalty killers in the national hockey league so uh you know it's
01:43something that uh and beck malenstein is also a very good penalty killer so uh that was something
01:50that i think they they thought they needed they didn't want to get rid of he also is one of
01:56their
01:56best four checkers as far as getting in with speed getting into the corner uh getting there uh you know
02:02on time and uh you know kind of causing havoc that way also so uh it's uh you know it's
02:11uh it's an odd
02:13one it shouldn't be surprising i guess i guess the reason why you were surprised paul i was many
02:18worries even though i like i don't think it's a problem that it's for that many years i mean the
02:22cap going up you know it's to me a three million deal and that you know four years from now
02:27is going
02:28to look like chump change but it's unique because i feel like fourth liners usually just don't go for
02:32that much right like that's that's really all of it or like that long like how often when's the last
02:37time the sabre signed a guy that you knew like okay this is a core fourth liner for me and
02:42penalty
02:42killer like those guys signing for six years i think is probably pretty rare yeah and but the
02:49money isn't that far out of whack right i think i think they it was on that website it was
02:55like 2.6
02:56or something uh that they were figuring he was worth and he they signed him for three million so
03:02um you know that's i wonder if it could have been like hey he would stay and they want him
03:10and the
03:10the number was higher like wouldn't the sabers be thinking well we'll give you more term if we can
03:16keep the dollar amount down versus like if we give you a three-year deal then it's going to cost
03:20us
03:20three and a half or four i i can't imagine it would vary that much on him yeah no no
03:26but it's it's somebody
03:27that i think is is very important to the team he doesn't cost a whole lot of money and it's
03:34like you
03:34know what why not i mean i think at the end of six years he's still going to be doing
03:39being able to
03:40do the things that he does best uh for the sabers so that'll bring them to just over 10 million
03:46dollars left paul do you feel like there's enough room to sign krebs sign zell wigger who we haven't
03:55talked about with you yet and then also do something else or do you feel like those two are going
03:59to eat
03:59up a giant a big chunk of that 10 million yeah that's it's it's going to be a chunk of
04:05it and uh
04:06uh you know so they may still have to move a salary out of here um you know there's still
04:14trades to be
04:15made which once trades are made i think would move salaries out of here and uh so and if they
04:23go
04:24and get uh you know somebody big they're going to have to figure out how to do that and that's
04:30going
04:30to be moving salaries out of here so um yeah it's it's you know well it just depends what are
04:39they
04:39going to be doing you know uh you know who are are prices finally going to come down where you
04:47know
04:47they they will be able to you know do do something uh that that's big for them but if they
04:55you know if
04:56they want to do something big then uh yeah it's going to have to be uh you know probably moving
05:02some out yeah there's also paul the sheer numbers of how many players they have under contract and
05:08how many forwards they have how many defensemen they have you might think someone's going to leave just
05:11because of that but without making it this specific it kind of looks like they're one
05:17player traded away from having about a hellebuck sized hole in salary cap you know like it's it won't
05:22take much to get to that size contract and there's plenty reports the two sides are back and forth
05:28about it but of course yarmu did not pay the big big price that reportedly existed at the draft
05:34instead you know now like you said if prices come down or whatever if if maybe the fact that hellebuck
05:40who reportedly was willing to wave to come here maybe that put some pressure on the jets i i don't
05:45know i don't know how likely it is but i'm encouraged that they are out there at least pursuing this
05:50uh
05:50this potential angle yeah and look at it this way too i mean it's no longer i mean the fourth
05:57and
05:5820th pick are still in play it's just names are now associated with it it's not well here's the
06:04fourth pick you get your choice of who you want to take it's you know here's the fourth pick and
06:11it's dex and rudoff or here's the 20th pick and it's morazov you know so it's now now it's the
06:19name
06:19is associated with it but that doesn't mean the pick still isn't out there and could be traded
06:24yeah ellie friedman says this morning paul on his podcast that he thinks the two sides are still
06:29talking and it's not over yet um in terms of that idea i know you were definitely not into it
06:37for
06:37the fourth overall pick right is there a lesser price where you feel like that would be a good idea
06:43for the sabers yeah i mean if uh the return is correct what we're reading out there the sabers
06:52may have said all right we'll give you the fourth overall pick but jack quinn's going to be the player
06:56you're getting you know because you know you're thinking well it's hellebuck why you know jack quinn is
07:02a player that kind of maybe is coming on but uh you know he he you know started to get
07:10going
07:10uh last year a little bit better than he had in the past and um you know what was able
07:18to score 20
07:18goals for the first time in his career but i don't know if that's the guy that gets it done
07:24for hellebuck
07:25but the sabers might say yeah but we we are giving you the fourth overall pick which i would be
07:32totally
07:32against so you know we're not going to give you josh doan or or you know something like that it's
07:38going
07:39to have to be on the jack quinn side of things uh uh you know so you know that that
07:45might have been
07:45what the sabers were saying and uh the the jets were like no this this isn't good enough paul but
07:52the trade that they did make on friday afternoon olin zellweger what what do you have you learned
07:57about him over the last couple of days feels like he is a version of bo byram in some ways
08:04i don't
08:04think he's as completed defenseman he's smaller but he also is only 22 like he could develop into
08:09a guy that is you know thought of higher than he is right now yeah they've got some work to
08:14do
08:15from a standpoint of uh you know defensively uh they're gonna have to give him some help there
08:22he's very fast uh you know so that they've got that going for him i mean he's one of the
08:29better
08:29skaters uh he's a very good puck moving defenseman uh but uh you know it's he's also a guy that
08:38uh
08:38you know he can move the puck yes but he only had like seven goals and 15 assists in the
08:44year before
08:44seven goals and 13 assists but as you mentioned at age 22 when the season starts he'll be 23
08:49um there is an upside here still um it took four years for dalene to become dalene it took four
08:59years for power to become power um and you know and i i say four years um yarmo says 200
09:10games he's
09:11at 164 you know he doesn't have 200 nhl games yet um he has three full pro seasons he spent
09:20some
09:20times with the sand of san diego gulls the first year and then two nhl seasons so he only has
09:2644 ahl
09:27games which maybe wasn't enough but uh there's a it's i think it's a good trade because it's a good
09:34upside here you know there's there he there's a good chance he could be better than what we've seen
09:41so far out of him and he hasn't been awful by any means but there's there's an upside here which
09:48i
09:48think made the trade worthwhile now he is you know a left-handed shooting defenseman
09:55so as far as talking about putting him with power the only problem with that is is then you've
10:03you're sitting there with two righties again on your on your third pair which lindy ruff doesn't
10:11much care for it crevier did play top four minutes with chicago and by all accounts did very well with
10:19it and i remember watching him play we of course saw him play in chicago in in april and um
10:25you're
10:26you know we were in chicago in april but anyway and uh you know he handled it okay so it
10:34wouldn't
10:34shock me at all if crevier or timmins is the guy playing with power being a lefty righty and then
10:40you
10:40also then have a lefty zellweger and a righty on the third pair too and it gives him a chance
10:47to
10:47maybe grow into the type of player he can be and not putting the pressure of you know making him
10:52a
10:53top 4d right off you know it's like okay come on in you know let's let's we know you've got
10:59some
11:00potential we know you can be better than what you've been and uh you know let him feel his way
11:06through and and do it that way with that being said under contract now paul defensively they have
11:12dolly power samuelson timmins crevier and metza and then zellweger is an rfa would you consider
11:18them to be done on the blue line or think would you guess that they're done on the blue line
11:22or
11:22is there one more they've got seven i mean you know with metza and so um yeah i i think
11:30they probably
11:32are done um if if they do make another move on d then metza probably winds up in rochester again
11:41um which is fine right because he has a two-way he has a two-way contract right yeah well
11:45it doesn't
11:45matter if he does or not it's just how much he gets paid right um a two-way doesn't mean
11:50you can't
11:50send in rochester you can still send the guy with a two-way or a one-way contract it's just
11:55he gets
11:55paid nhl money uh if he goes down there that's all um but um yeah so it's and you know
12:04forwards is
12:04where they got it they've got it you know they they're okay on d now you've got three stud defensemen
12:10you've got two others that you've acquired i think yeah i think now's the time that they have to be
12:15looking at forwards or if they are going trying to improve their goaltending uh uh i mean you know
12:22that but i think as far as defense goes yeah i would i would think they are done paul are
12:29they um
12:31mean enough right now i mean i just want to point out like greenway leaves stanley's not coming back
12:36they got stanley and shen to be meaner in the playoffs and you know greenway's something
12:41there talk is size do you feel like they drafted a draft class that looks big and got plenty of
12:47meanness to it does the roster have it enough of it well what did yarmo say at last year after
12:54the
12:55winnipeg trade it's like we i felt we were getting pushed around well that if you felt you were getting
13:05pushed around then you probably are going to get pushed around here i mean they don't have josh
13:11dunn signed right now i don't know if they're planning on re-signing him or not and if they did
13:16they probably would start him in rochester anyway um so you know if if he didn't feel that
13:25you know they if he felt they were getting pushed around last year zellweger cravier he can he's a big
13:32big man yeah he's not getting pushed around he he kind of like is in the kessel ring kessel ring
13:39admitted that he didn't like to fight but he did and he was there for teammates you know in the
13:45little
13:45bit that he played um he was you know he would do it and and you know he actually wasn't
13:51too bad at
13:52it well you know watching him do it uh and cravier i i you know i'd read it's not his
13:57favorite thing to
13:58do either but he's he shows up and he's there and he will do it you know so uh you
14:04do you have
14:05gotten yourself a six eight guy who uh is not going to get pushed around so yeah you've got one
14:12guy in the blue line that you can count on for that and timmons timmons would show up if he
14:16has to
14:17but otherwise you think like of the forward group it might be something lacking currently yeah
14:21malenstein shows up he's not a fighter so to speak i feel like krebs is in that camp too where
14:26he
14:26shows up but he's not thought of it yeah but they're in the middle of it i mean the it's
14:31not
14:31like where's malenstein how come he's not there uh you know they're right in the middle of it if
14:35they have to be most of their guys that that's the one thing you know maybe they get pushed around
14:40but ever since the thompson slash samuelson incident they they basically all show up they're all there
14:48in a five-man unit they may get the tar kicked out of them but at least they're there and
14:54they show up
14:55and they're there for each other yeah that's where i was just gonna say like they didn't that
14:59that was something we talked about at the deadline but then the tampa game happened and then they got
15:04through boston i think without that really being an issue and that's not really how they lost to
15:08montreal like none of the takeaway paul i don't think after montreal was they lost that series
15:13because they got bullied no but i just think if we're looking at the way the gm operates and talks
15:17he's drafting big men he's trading for big men yep and the roster might be just a little light in
15:23that
15:23department and i want to keep that open as like an avenue he still might pursue like maybe the
15:28upgrade they they are looking for at forward or guys that go out and guys that come in like they
15:32just i want to keep it open as something that he has talked about value uh valuing and right now
15:38the
15:38roster isn't exactly you know like overflowing with it and you know what maybe that's something that
15:43they have to live with for a year yeah you know it's like uh all right we gotta we we
15:48don't have a lot
15:49of money here we gotta go out and get krebs signed we gotta go out uh you know and and
15:56that type of a
15:57zell wigger signed and it's like maybe for the 6.4 million dollars of jeff skinner this year which
16:04turns into 2.4 next year we may just have to live with it knowing that our guys do show
16:09up for each
16:10other and uh they're gonna have to maybe take care of it and then deal with it the year after
16:16krebs by the way like what what are the chances they will bring him back because they he's
16:21arbitration eligible and we know that they didn't want to do that with kesselring and also like what
16:26am i signing him for like is he going back on the top line because fourth line center i've got
16:31i've
16:32got carrick kozak and danforth all under contract like i don't really need him for that so i guess paul
16:39why would i be doing it i'd be i like him like he can play versatile all over the lineup
16:43but is he going
16:44like back on line one and that's why i'm bringing him back or is he really expendable at the moment
16:48i
16:48think lindy ruff would be kind of upset if he didn't have krebs at his disposal he really liked
16:53him it's it's like he never like was the healthy scratch he always found some place for him to play
17:01uh he's a little like benson benson you can put on any line and he's going to excel and it
17:07seemed
17:08krebs once once he got some offensive confidence which i thought he did he's the same way you can
17:16put him probably anywhere you want in the lineup and you're you're probably going to be fine so um
17:23i i i think lindy ruff probably wouldn't be a happy camper if uh you know that that turned out
17:30to be the
17:30case that uh um you know if he wasn't around so um it just depends what is he looking for
17:39is he
17:39is is he looking for a reasonable contract or is his agent you know way out of line as far
17:45as what
17:46he wants but you know he had career high in goals he had career high in assists and he had
17:5111 more
17:51points than he ever had before um and he's you know he's he's going to be in the lineup i
17:57mean
17:5780 81 games and 82 games in the last three years so he's durable um you know he had a
18:05not that plus
18:06minus is anything any great shakes but he you know was plus 13 which is the highest by far in
18:13his career
18:14and he had six points in 13 playoff games too so uh you know he's one of the guys that
18:21is in the
18:21middle of things is not afraid to drop the gloves even though sometimes maybe it doesn't work out well
18:26for him but he's not afraid to do it so i guess i would put it this way i would
18:30be surprised if he's
18:32they don't find some way maybe i don't know i don't know how if if they just live with an
18:41arbitration
18:41and take that chance or if they if he if he declares for arbitration and there's a hearing on
18:48august 2nd at one o'clock on august 2nd at 11 o'clock the contract may be signed
18:55that happens a lot like two hours before the hearing you know the the two two sides come to
19:02an agreement uh so uh you know we'll we'll see how that one goes and then like if he is
19:07awarded a
19:07number it's a take it or leave it right yeah and and it's like a one-year deal that's what
19:13they were
19:13afraid with um tessel ring that he'd get a one-year deal that was way out of whack and then
19:18you're not
19:19allowed to trade him because it's a one-year award and he signed three years four and a half right
19:24with uh san jose we just saw yeah which if he plays the way he's capable of is is actually
19:30a
19:31deal i mean that that's a very good contract for san jose if he shows up there and is michael
19:37kessel ring the the that played in utah and played with team usa he's a very good defenseman and i
19:42keep
19:43i even said that you know before he got traded here i mean if he shows up in camp next
19:47year if he's still
19:48here and he he's michael kessel ring they got a good defenseman a very good defenseman but uh you
19:55know he just wasn't of the mind that he wanted to play here um there's there's a lot of it's
20:01a hockey
20:01market he's you know not in the hockey market anymore so you know i think he's back to what he
20:07was in utah where he's not going to get much criticism good or bad uh you know so um that'll
20:14be
20:14a fit for him probably a little bit better than buffalo but that'll be a really really good
20:19contract in my opinion if he is michael kessel ring for the sharks paul hamilton his appearance
20:25brought to you by ralax on to ralax we got this thank you paul we'll be in touch uh through
20:29the
20:29week no problem take care free agency opens up on wednesday and uh you know maybe trades today
20:37tomorrow elliot friedman uh the latest from him on the sabers and the jets still talking connor
20:43hellebuyck who wants us to know that he waved it's a fun game to play that he would be willing
20:51to come here who wants us to know that the sabers want us to know that okay winnipeg doesn't
20:58hellebuyck could want hellebuyck wants people to know he would have gone maybe i'd go that
21:02hellebuyck wants us to know hellebuyck wants us to know okay because it was reported part of what
21:07elliot friedman is reporting is that the list is not as restrictive as like a dylan larkin right
21:13you know some of these guys are getting criticized because they're no move clauses and they pick three
21:18teams and there's been reporting that hellebuyck has not been as restrictive and again the who wants
21:25me to know that game and if i may play a little bit of a cynic side of the game
21:29what would i tell
21:31my agent to do even if i was only going to pick one of three teams like make sure everybody
21:34knows i'm
21:35not picking one of three teams i don't want to look bad doesn't brady kachuk don't dylan larkin
21:40don't they look bad because they're worse it looks worse yeah if you say no no i would like to
21:45go
21:46it even went so far that hellebuyck would like to make sure the jets get proper value for him
21:52that's what you say if you want to not be the villain right not to say it's not true or
21:58he's not
21:59being you know genuine but that's a hundred percent what i i'm getting traded on to make sure people
22:04here don't hate me forever let's get it out there that i want this team to get proper value for
22:09trading me away yeah that i'm not really squeezing them and putting them in a really difficult position
22:15yeah the money on him by the way like i it's not bad no 8.5 really five years the
22:22way you should
22:22look at it is you should assume lukanen is going back in the deal because sabers won't keep both of
22:27them and how much more money is it 3.75 million more i'm only i'm only increasing the amount of
22:34spend in goal flopping flipping lukanen for hellebuyck by 3.75 million dollars it's not that expensive
22:43comparative to what some of these other ideas are like if you were going to get a big name forward
22:47or something
22:47or something
