00:00producing owens off today he's back tomorrow and uh we are off to you know the nhl free agency and
00:06all that good stuff and uh news of a beck malenstein extension being imminent
00:11a uh weekend of the draft we had a lot of you know stuff yeah a lot of stuff not
00:18that much
00:19a lot of like rumor stuff yeah i don't know where to begin but uh other than it's gonna be
00:26hot out
00:26it's gonna be hot out and i watched the canada game which was thrilling good for canada yeah in
00:31stoppage time that was that was cool good in in a home stadium too which is cool it was in
00:38vancouver
00:38the game yesterday no it was in so far they were not at home wasn't at home no because they
00:41didn't
00:42win their group they had to play on the oh right so it's in so far yes uh it's one
00:46of the things
00:46there were a lot of canada fans so it would have been easy to miss that in football it's kind
00:50of
00:50easy to identify the field because the field has names on it right soccer it's like that's probably
00:55vancouver right um no all right i know what i'll start with before we get to the hockey
00:58this is proof that asterisks in sports don't exist and never will all these teams getting their first
01:06ever knockout stage win like there's an extra round oh yeah extra round yeah oh this team has
01:12made the knockout stage for the first time yeah they let eight more in yeah and it's kind of like
01:17the team that wins their first first ever march madness game they did it in dayton ohio yeah on a
01:23tuesday in the plane yep yep so you got more teams in there and you got i'm not trying to
01:27take
01:28anything away from canada just this is proof asterisks aren't real we don't really use them
01:32who else is going to get their first ever knockout round win in forever so i get the sabers had
01:36ended
01:36the drought in the coveted year when they let 24 teams in the playoff like maybe this is different
01:42so anyway good for canada team usa plays on wednesday we're going to talk with nick mandola maybe
01:47today and wednesday and thursday i mean our segments have been great love talking to nick
01:52uh the u.s draw is going to be bosnia first and then the winner of senegal and belgium which
01:58i think
01:58will be senegal and i think yeah you do i do yeah senegal is very good they were third in
02:03a very good
02:04group belgium is old belgium does not look great and senegal could certainly beat the u.s i was listening
02:10to the good little bet for you because uh belgium is favored minus you could get you can get uh
02:15senegal plus 136 okay i don't mind that underdog i think the u.s will be an underdog to either
02:21team
02:22maybe i think they're favored against senegal slightly and i bet they're slightly underdogs
02:27against belgium i guess the athletic fc podcast i listen to been listening a lot they talk you know
02:32not just u.s but everybody referred to senegal as a team that would beat the u.s seven out
02:36of eight
02:36times wow yeah so really yeah we'll see i mean i think they're decent but okay that's some that's
02:43some praise yeah seven out of eight times seven out of eight times interesting they played and they
02:49played on a friendly it was one of the two friendlies before the world cup and the u.s beat
02:54them they scored too early and then held on to win 2-2-1 uh 3-2 3-2 yeah
02:58went from 2-0 to 2-2
03:00whatever that was that was the one time i guess it was a friendly which means that senegal will win
03:03the next seven by that logic that's bad news because they won the game before you don't like
03:07to hear that anyway in a stunning upset the nhl draft was a lot of rumors about craziness and just
03:17teams picking players which is what it is almost every year we probably should have been uh well
03:24prepared for that they're just going to pick their players and fine that's fine how much do i want to
03:30really disagree with what jerry fortin there said in the open if you don't draft well your team's
03:35going to suffer pretty soon like no they won't not if they're good vegas does not draft well vegas
03:42doesn't draft like you know um all right how much do i want to get after that not too much
03:48i mean the
03:48sabers drafting a guy fourth overall who's probably going to be awesome because guys drafted fourth are
03:53probably awesome and another guy in the 20s where that's like yuri kulik's sweet spot where he got
03:59drafted the sabers had a defenseman in the center and that's fine that's fine the number one thing
04:04i'm coming in today thinking about it's not the beck malenstein conversation six years six years you're
04:10waking up to that six year deal for beck yeah i'm not too worried about that no me neither i
04:15mean it
04:16is like kind of an eye-popping like what you give a fourth liner a six-year deal but he's
04:2028 as i tweeted
04:22out if you want to be out of that deal four years from now with a monster cap you could
04:26buy out of it
04:26and it'll look like a rounding error yeah the the best thing to do when there's a contract extension
04:30is to immediately plan the buyout that's that's usually a good thing to do but the thing i'm
04:37thinking about is this darren dreger reported on the friday sorry friday that on hellibook
04:44connor hellibook and the saver's pursuit of connor hellibook which i guess if we're gonna trust all
04:50the reporting on it we should refer to it as the saver's pursuit of hellibook right okay yes let's refer
04:54to
04:55uh darren dreger a ton of back and forth between yarmo kekalainen and kevin shovel dayoff but in
05:01the end it feels like the savers pulled back because they didn't get comfortable with the
05:05package the jets commanded and there's a report out there that they ought the ask for hellibook from
05:11the jets was the fourth pick upl a rostered player and a prospect probably like jack quinn and a prospect
05:18which is a pretty big price yes so that's why they didn't pay it okay that that makes sense
05:24the thing i'm gonna be at is i will want to put a bet on the bet board or do
05:29you want to put a
05:29day's counter how many days until the report that the jets and the savers have reopened talks oh i want
05:36to say like this week okay yeah i want to i want to believe like this week that it will
05:39happen because
05:40the one thing the hellibook pursuit does for me you know upl is reported in that offer if you're
05:47actually going back and forth and having lengthy conversations about the the possibility of trading
05:52for connor hellibook i don't want to hear anymore how they're happy with the guys they have i know
05:57they're gonna say it oh very comfortable they're very comfortable they like the guys they have they
06:01do they're they're hunting connor hellibook that's that means they'd like to upgrade is there any doubt
06:07about that no i mean if there was they have an opportunity to get arguably the best goalie in the
06:11world right and so if you like the guys you have you just don't go down that road maybe you'd
06:17say
06:17well you do it for one guy i bet they do it for three guys there are other calls they're
06:21gonna make
06:21i would think well there was a report they're they're interested in babrovsky isn't there i mean
06:26that that is not just well i i like our guys but the best one in the world is available
06:33like i'm the
06:33you know i'm the tampa bay buccaneers i really like baker mayfield but uh patrick mahomes is available
06:39like uh yeah i would do that and if you're the sabers you might look at hellibook and say
06:44that well i wouldn't really do this for any other goalie but he's the best but that doesn't explain
06:50why you would be interested in sergey babrovsky who is gonna go to free agency i see that this
06:54morning looks like babrovsky is headed to free agency and there's toronto smoke about about him
06:59yep um not the sabers weren't listed about him earlier so yeah like i think hellibook is gonna be
07:05i think a main there's gonna be a idea that continues here because where do we sit today
07:11he do we think he's still getting traded the way the end of the season press conference sounded like
07:17and they're talking about trades like he's gonna go back to winnipeg yeah so if you don't think that's
07:23happening then okay he's still getting traded and carolina pulled back because winnipeg's not
07:30interested in the defenseman that they want to trade florida has nothing to deal with because
07:35they won't trade anton lundell and who else is in it i know the sabers are we know the sabers
07:40got
07:41down that road and enough that we know that he said yes to them yes which is usually the roadblock
07:48that they've run into that's cleared he wants to come here so i think i've got to believe that it's
07:56gonna fire back up again if you think he's getting traded like i i would i would want to consider
08:01the
08:02sabers to be the most likely play he place he plays his next his next game who would beat them
08:08for it there's no other trade you could take the field and the field might be more likely but what's
08:12the other team show me the other team right now that's going to go get him because right now we
08:17know the sabers were interested we know he would come here so i think that that's going to start up
08:22again the ask for winnipeg what does that become though because that is a ton i mean did they want
08:30to trade down from four to eight maybe and that would have been more i mean they might have thought
08:35they could have got rudolph at eight so i might want to think they very well could have so maybe
08:38that's the thing they were trying to pull off there upl if you're getting hellebuck you're very
08:44open to trading him quinn is not like a a plus piece but you might not want to part with
08:51him
08:51because you just lost alex tuck and you might need a winger to jump up into the top six and
08:55then
08:56the prospect who knows what that was was that osland or was that you know a walberg level prospect
09:01because that's a huge difference you want to give some b minus level prospect that's fine
09:06so i i think now that the pick has been made would you trade rudolph upl and like one other
09:16piece
09:16like i think that might be what winnipeg's going for and are they going to have to settle because
09:21he doesn't want to play there anymore upl included in the package which there have been reports that
09:27he'd been being shopped uh is shopped just to winnipeg or is that elsewhere upl in the package
09:33understanding that he is a fine goalie maybe good maybe has a bright future to me putting him in a
09:39package to help with hellebuck means it's like there's i would say there's no value to him but
09:45that's obvious like oh you could have our guy all right i don't look at the package of four pieces
09:50and say well that's i just wipe upl out of there it's the rest of it you're bringing in hellebuck
09:55for the money he makes you're not going to keep upl on a five million dollar contract because then
09:59you'd be spending over 12 million yeah and i don't want to do that so he's he'd be gone and
10:03it
10:03would just be like you take this guy because we're taking your guy it's it's a swap one for one
10:07and
10:07then what's the price to do it so i know it's included in there but whatever like the whole
10:12the whole weekend and the whole conversation about the savers draft if you were online at all
10:17the argument seemed to be whether or not you're allowed to be disappointed
10:21to which i would say yes yes you were totally allowed to be disappointed that doesn't mean that
10:28you think that you know everything is over the offseason isn't going to have anything else to it
10:32i mean we haven't even gotten to july 1st yet but you know are you allowed to be disappointed that
10:37they just picked fourth and 20th yeah sure go for it i mean asking this team to have the kind
10:45of
10:45offseason that they've not yet had i think is totally fine if they don't bring any big fish
10:51in free agency and don't make a big trade from here i guess you could hit your wagon to the
10:56offseason
10:56was good because of the byram trade but even that is i think a little bit suspect the idea is
11:03i want to
11:03be better now are all of a sudden is olin zellweger the same player as bone byram maybe he is
11:10maybe he
11:10can step right in and be an offensive dynamo there's a lot to like about his game as we you
11:14know continue
11:15to learn about him but i think it's totally reasonable to be disappointed to this point and
11:21say i certainly want more i want to see something else happen here i want to see a good to
11:28great player
11:29brought in because what i've got is a defenseman in anaheim that's due a contract okay they'll pay him
11:35and what right could they just sit louis crevier if their offseason is they're going to sit here with
11:43their remaining 10 million dollars in cap space and they're going to use that on zellweger and
11:49krebs and that's going to be the end of their offseason then i think you are absolutely allowed
11:55to be disappointed because if you rewound to where all this began which is they got cap space some
12:03they've got assets all over the place that became even more true after they traded byram and i tell
12:12you well he lost tuck they had to trade byram and the biggest name they brought in that's going to
12:18help you right now his name is olin zellweger who i like a lot but most fans had never heard
12:24of
12:24what would that feel like it would feel like we what the what the heck happened i lost my best
12:30winger and one of my best defensemen and i didn't bring anybody in that's got any status in the league
12:38that would feel like i think a definite disappointment that is not yarmo sunglasses
12:43on on twitter that is i made some smart savvy moves but it wouldn't to me feel that different than
12:51what kevin adams had done in previous off seasons you made a trade that you did great in but you
12:58also were kind of forced into it right like that's the peterka trade like they did great in the peterka
13:02trade they wanted to sign him and yeah they wanted to sign byram yep and they did an amazing job
13:08getting
13:09value back for him but you would not have even probably called chicago or chicago called you if it
13:15was just well he wants to stay here we want him to stay let's just sign him to the extension
13:19so i think
13:21you are absolutely right to be disappointed but at the same time i think you are right to still
13:25think that it's not over that there are still big names one thing about the sabers not making a trade
13:33on draft night it would have felt different if there were bigger deals around the league than not
13:38did not include them if hellebuck had been traded somewhere else and zach wierenski had been traded
13:43somewhere else and dylan larkin had been traded somewhere else like all the big names that we
13:48thought are going to get traded this offseason none of them have been traded except brady kachuk
13:52everybody's still out there robertson is still out there boy robertson wierenski is more out there
13:56than he was hellebuck is still out there like if you want to do the big fish trade nobody else
14:01has made
14:02it so they are still sitting there and i don't know if any of those guys return to their teams
14:07is
14:08wierenski ever going to play for columbus again is larkin ever going to play for detroit again is
14:12hellebuck ever going to play for winnipeg robertson might play for dallas but all of those guys could
14:18still get dealt and you still have all the stuff you want that you had before the difference now is
14:24there's a name attached to the pick the robertson saga is kind of funny i mean i don't know he's
14:29a
14:29obviously a good to great player he did not play for team usa so he's not on that group chat
14:34maybe
14:34he'd have but that was like absurd right right 40 he's 4600 he's seen that 100 points in the league
14:40before yeah he's he's great but that the reporting on the robertson thing is all over the place it's
14:45he's going to sign an offer sheet it's make no mistake he wants to sign in dallas it's he turned
14:50down 15 it's he would take 12 and a half like i feel like the money is all over the
14:56place yes it's
14:57like all right you guys you insiders out there you can't get me to care about jason robertson this
15:01enough where i get 20 updates a day and it's all just guesses what he's going to do like okay
15:06great
15:06sure he's going to go he's going to be a uf or whatever he's going to get an offer sheet
15:10sure he
15:10is maybe that that's the other thing it's like we are how many days away from offer sheets just two
15:16days away from offer first yeah two days away so that'll be wednesday okay maybe oh no this is the
15:22year this is the time all right well let's find out let's find out anyway 8030550 the number if you
15:27want to chime in the guys they did get they got a defenseman at fourth overall in dex and rudolph
15:32which is uh fine right yeah that will be a pick that no matter who made that pick he was
15:40not you tell
15:41me joe i didn't see him on the top of defenseman boards anywhere so chase reed was the guy i
15:48saw
15:49more often at the top or the other guy was uh virhoff was there sometimes we talked to mike
15:55moriel on friday that's who he had for the sabers okay but he also wasn't up there a lot the
15:59other
16:00guy that was always up number one for the defenseman was uh carson carls that's the one thing of yes
16:06there were my read on all that was there was a tier of of a top tier of defensemen that
16:13were five guys
16:14and you could have picked any of the five but most times rudolph was fourth or fifth yeah so he
16:21was in
16:21the tier where you could say you could pick any of these guys and it's defendable but he was most
16:26commonly mocked or ranked when i saw like the fourth or fifth guy of that group so i i think
16:33it might feel like a bigger reach than it actually is because of that it's really like reed right reed
16:38is
16:38kind of the flip end chase reed was supposed to be the number one guy he most people had him
16:43as the
16:43number one and he ended up going fourth of those defensemen yep so i don't think it's a reach much
16:49at
16:49all and it sounds like he's the guy with the highest offensive ceiling that can't play in his
16:55own end so he's big and he's big so i kind of feel like the sabers might be more willing
17:01to say
17:02we'll take the guy with the highest upside offensive ceiling because we don't need him to ever be our
17:07number one defenseman right we don't need him to be our all-around 25 minute a night guy maybe the
17:12maybe chicago would have picked reed or carls because they need something more than just a guy that's
17:18going to put up 20 goals and 70 points um but if this guy hits you know all of his
17:24potential then
17:25maybe he stinks in his own end and they don't care because he's going to be their third defenseman
17:308030550 the phone number and 1-888-552-550 get ready for the uh the report i'm told this i
17:38think the
17:38sabers and the jets are kicking things back up you think today wednesday i think the better bet would
17:44be which what which insider let's draft insiders they're going to have the hellebuck scoop the next
17:49sabers hellebuck report i'll take dragger dragger yeah you get you get the next two picks i'll take
17:56like a i'll take a frank cerebelli or something all right on winnipeg and coming back on the snake who
18:00you want uh david panion okay now two to me yeah i i mean i can't believe this guy goes
18:06i'm going
18:07friedman and chris johnston it's pretty good lebron uh i mean friedman's usually only reporting it when
18:14it's like really down the road right that might be right or like really really close to happening
18:19he had robertson 15 mil the seattle was turned down um yeah leaving friedman there there isn't
18:26that is a snub there isn't a single insider that doesn't have six jason robertson reports
18:30i mean it's just it's been a relentless weekend about jason robertson this and that like
18:35i think it's probably because people are excited at the potential of somebody finally getting
18:40offer sheeted and not even like uh or just being traded or that not even like a second round
18:45offer sheet for four million like if he gets offer sheeted it will be the four million the four
18:49first round pick offer sheet at 14 plus million dollars per year i still feel like that's i feel
18:56like if you connect enough of them it sounds like he wants to stay in dallas but he wants dallas
19:01to pay
19:01him 14 million and they can't do that so that's what's going to cause him to leave he would like
19:06if
19:06dallas could match anybody else it's going to go to 14 he'd just stay but they probably can't do it
19:12which is why you could probably get them on an offer sheet i don't know i don't know what's most
19:19likely to happen for him he's the one big name i've never seen any insider connect the sabers to
19:27robertson yeah i see very little 8030550 is the number we'll get some calls in here john in
19:33pittsburgh leads us off john good morning hey good morning guys morning so you you guys were
19:38talking about reed and rudolph and everything like that and how reed was this consensus first
19:44first defense no not consensus not consensus did not say consensus but like more often than the other
19:50guys he was number one yeah so this is my take on the whole thing i i actually thought that
19:56reed was actually the worst out of the five he was drafted in the seventh round three years ago he
20:01just blossomed this year he hasn't been consistent up to this point he just kind of came out of
20:06nowhere where rudolph was a first round pick three years ago and has been this consistent force this
20:13whole time when i did my research on the guys that was the guy that i i had it was
20:19him and carols
20:20so whichever one you wanted to go with that was who i wanted but maybe i'm just wrong but no
20:27i mean
20:28that guy that guy's more the most has been the most consistent out of most of those top five guys
20:33no i saw the same thing as a defense to why you would go rudolph rudolph was the first overall
20:38pick
20:38in the whl yeah he's been a top prospect since he was like 13 years old and reed as you
20:44mentioned
20:44reed's your uh he's your xavier laguet like he just had one big year and then shot up the prospect
20:51rankings so i saw that as a defense for why they did xavier laguet is that the go-to name
20:56of a guy that
20:56had a good probably not but he was the first one that came to mind wasn't he that who's the
21:00guy
21:00that had a good year didn't he wasn't he terrible before his last year laguet you're right like he's
21:06probably not the most popular no i want to do this now who's the name does it have to be
21:10in football
21:10terms it might help people because yeah give me give me a football name who's the guy who would
21:14you know actually okay way better that isn't a bills option isn't this joe burrow didn't joe burrow
21:20just have the giant year isn't joe burrow closer to chase reed i mean he went to ohio state
21:25that's that's oh sorry that's what i'm saying yeah no he'd be your chase reed here he had one
21:30monster year that caused her to shoot up burrow is now closer to the the rudolph because again he
21:34went to ohio state he's a highly touted prospect the entire time it's not josh that josh didn't
21:39have like one big year did he that ballooned him up i'm thinking cam newton i mean burrow is it
21:44mitch is it mitch trubisky is it i'm gonna defend my burrow selection here he put in three years
21:49at lsu and ohio state before his final season his senior year he had 18 total touchdowns and less
21:56than 3 000 yards then he had 5 600 yards and 60 touchdowns who was he behind though some other
22:01dude who was awesome because he went to ohio state yeah probably like yeah somebody these are fun
22:05comparisons xavier laguette you don't like the laguette he's he's by jt barrett come on i don't
22:11mind you're gonna beat out jt barrett well they probably won a lot of games i'm willing to come
22:15off of laguette is the example here but yeah thanks for the phone call i don't really care
22:21i'm just kind of painting the picture of if you went out and saw a bunch of mock drafts there
22:25were
22:25just not that many to put rudolph ahead of chase reed john bouchergross did say like multiple times
22:29over the 24 hours before the draft also that if if reed is there the sabers won't trade the pick
22:35he was right he was correct he's right they didn't they didn't they did not trade the pick
22:41803 05 50 good monday morning everybody we're back with you taking you through what uh will be
22:46a steamy monday we can talk about the beck malenstein extension as well a uh looks like six
22:51year deal for three million per year and uh they have too many forwards they have too many forwards
